I found the documentary to be somewhat infuriating. Never did the perpetrator apologise or really own their behaviour, they merely played the victim. I don’t care what personal battles you may be overcoming, it does not give anyone the right to impact the lives of others. The events single-handedly ruined what could of been a HOF career. Didn’t even have the guts to apologise on camera. Makes me sick. The only thing Manti is guilty of being gullible. The media, and society as a whole let this young man down in a big way also. Glad to hear that Manti is doing well, happily married and seems to be at peace with his life.

He probably spent most of his young life training with the devotion of an ascetic. I'd say it's feasible that he missed out on opportunities to develop certain social skills and self-awareness... totally understandable how someone in his position could fall prey to something like this. If he comes through, it's a testament to his strength.

I remember that entire situation as it was happening, and the media definitely kept trying to put Manti in a negative light. Kid seems to be doing well today, so I'm glad he was able to overcome all of the adversity he faced. Good for him.

I just hated how the Netflix documentary tried to paint the scammer as also a victim because of gender identity. The only victim in all of this was Manti.

Fuck I just watched it on Netflix and what bothers me so much is how non-remorseful that cat fishing dude is and how they allowed him to be. It turned into “yeah, I fucked his whole life up, made him a living meme, took millions from him in draft stock, but Yey LGBTQ I get to be myself! Go me! Go pride! I’m free!!!” And no one held him/her accountable wtf 🤬 this was a horror documentary

Just watched the doc last night. We reallllly failed this kid as a society. The media above all, but we swallowed it & didn’t ask any questions. Wish I could give dude a hug & tell him I’m sorry for not having his back. Dude got finessed so hard. Those voicemails- bro, I woulda fallen for it too! Only reason it wouldn’t have gotten so crazy is cuz I wasn’t a superstar linebacker away at Notre Dame prepping for a heisman, national championship & the NFL draft.

I loved watching Dr Phil have to eat a little crow when the scammer went on his show and Phil tried to call out the scammer saying he could not throw his voice good enough to pass as a girl. Dude went behind that screen and Dr Phil's bottom jaw hit the floor. LOL. This is one of the craziest stories I've ever heard of. I keep thinking about how Tao going from a first round pick to 2nd cost him around $15,000,000, most of it being in the signing bonus. I would sue the scammer for all "they" have.

Couldn't agree more. I have learned over the past couple of years how the media is just scum. I was still in college when all this went down and remember how they tried to paint Manti as someone who did something wrong when he was just a victim to a very disturbed person who created an elaborate scheme. Even now, the documentary is still trying to portray the scammer as also a victim because of trans/gender identity. The only real victim in all of this was Manti.

I just got done watching the documentary and we owe him a huge apology for treating him the way that he was treated. And no wonder he had difficulty after that anybody would and the fact that he was brave enough to come out and talk about it now I applaud him and it would be nice if all of those people who belittled him made fun of him joked about him would apologize to him because he's owed an apology. It was not one of our proudest moments at all, but I have to say I'm not surprised that he was treated like that people love a good scandal and they don't even care if it's true they don't even care if it hurts anybody they just don't care as long as it gets them ratings they're good

As a linebacker the most important trait is subconscious play recognition and trusting yourself and what you see to not second guess something and end up in a bad position to make a play. Imagine going through all of that, and then having to try and trust what *you* see the offense is doing. Damn Manti. I remember when his ND catfishing scandal broke and I felt bad for him, but more than that for some reason we kind of lost respect for him even though that was 100% undeserving. Looking back now, watching this video I found myself rooting for him and wanting him to win. He got the short end of the stick but was obviously incredibly talented and we will wonder what could’ve been in the NFL had some breaks gone his way. Good luck brotha I wish you the best.

I resonate with Manti. I too was naive and was catfished in high school. For those who have never experienced something like this, it is hard to grasp and understand the true horror of it all. Similar to Manti, the catfisher eventually decided to "terminate" the relationship by faking a terminal illness, in my case, she had stage IV glioblastoma multiforme. She too pretended to take her last breathe over the phone as I yelled and asked "God why?" I hope Manti finds peace, happiness, and love in his new relationship with his wife.

For myself, I'm the opposite of Manti. I'm naturally suspicious and untrusting. Call it street smarts or whatever else. But I'm one who ASSUMES the worst in people, and I wait for them to PROVE to me that they can be trusted. Why am I like this? It's because I KNOW that all people, without exception, has a dark side. Even the most feeble, old lady has a dark side. It's just a matter if a person unleashes it or not.

I think with his leadership skills and positivity that he could be a motivational speaker/ personal life coach and talking about what he went through and how he overcame it could really help others. I would follow him on the socials or listen to him do a Ted talk.

What annoyed me the most was those 2 pieces of crap that told him they were going to publish the story and gave him limited time to comment. They didn’t realize how much it impacted Manti on a negative level. He could’ve ended his life due to the backlash he received. All to get the story out.

It amazes me that the Trans Women didn't apologize and made it like he/she was the victim. Too bad Manti couldn't sue. He was completely and shamelessly attacked by the clown who was Mr. deep dive. The memes people were making that were showed in netflix absolutely destroyed me. I wanted to cry for him, such a horrible thing to happen and people just made it worse. This could have very easily been a NFL superstar suicide story. I'm so glad he's strong enough to make it through.

The thing most people over look is how different the world was back then. Tinder wasn’t a thing, MySpace ruled, and Facebook recently got introduced into the world. The other thing people over look is Manti’s faith and composure through it all. Did he get catfished? Yes. Did he go out of his way and start shooting up the place where his catfisher lived? This documentary was truly infuriating, like on a next level. Not only does this Naya guy get to walk with no criminal or fraud or ANY type of charge for this heavily, weirdly concocted scheme that caused much suffering and nearly destroyed a life. He also gets to say he is now a woman AND gets an uncontested/no-questions-asked platform on Netflix to “tell his story”, wear makeup, wear a wig, dance like a sweaty pig, and talk about life journeys, and finding oneself, and his self pity and and all the drivel WE the audience have to put up with in order to hear the actual victim’s story. Netflix Netflix…I am actually looking forward to that crazy day when someone will come out with a story on how Adolf Hitler was a closeted trans, just so I can watch Netflix twist and metamorphose itself into “reframing Hitler’s life story” or “Hitler: villain or victim?” More and more I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone

Yo Dr.Phill had the catfisher on his show, which was a man. Dr.Phill played it well he showed a clip of catfish singing which happened to be good at. Dr.Phill then praises the guy telling him he had good "voice control" Later in the interview he ask catfish to prove he was the voice on Teo's voicemail posing as the woman thought to be his girlfriend. He said do the voice for me right now. Dude got nervous and said I can't just do the voice like that. I become someone else and I've never done it in front of someone. He then agreed to do it behind a sheet in shadow form. Dr.Phill made him empty his pockets and he did the voice Dr.Phil smiling at the camera the whole time because he knew he was helping Teo, an innocent victim that a lot of people didn't believe early on. Dude sounded like a straight up girl

Got to meet and get to know Manti a lil as we both were on a Charity board together and as great of a Player as he was, and make absolutely no mistake, prior to his foot/achilles injuries, he was Pro Bowl/All-Pro caliber, he is a better person. Having Played the game 17+ years myself, I am extremely cynical of the public personas so carefully crafted for Pro athletes by their minions. That said, Manti is the Real Deal and just a super friendly kind humble guy without being sickening or self righteously so, as some can be. Great Guy with incredible family support and foundation and we still touch base a few times a year and he is happy fulfilled and harbors zero regrets or bitterness about the catfishing fiasco, his foot injuries or the way that his NFL career played out. As we were talking one evening and I'll never forget his response, though paraphrased, "how can I be bitter. I got paid over $10M to Play a game and set my whole family up for life. I have an Amazing wife and a Beautiful daughter. I think that I'm the luckiest man on earth." He really does believe that and his daily words and actions support that. i think it is silly that an out of game statistic would have such an impact on how he was drafted. 4.81 is not exactly slow and his body of work should have been more important than a 40 time and especially for a guy who plays linebacker.

I retired from Law Enforcement. Catfishing happens a lot. Usually the victim is either blackmailed or scammed out of money. Happens more often than you think. Plus the story came out after the Title Game not before.

Watching that Netflix doc last night, really made me sad and angry at the same time. The reporters did no real research. They made assumptions then ran with it, and didn't really sit down and interview Manti before releasing the story. They admitted themselves that they wanted to get it out before the championship game. Did they have money on the game? Were they Alabama alum? Or were they a michigan alum? Maybe we should investigate there. Either way, the sports media, and Notre Dame fans failed Manti. When he needed them most, they failed him. Thank god he had strong family that stood by him no matter what. I do remember when this was happening, and by the way the theories were promoted on ESPN and other news outlets, i fell for their narrative, no wonder we still don't trust the media today.
