What Happens to the Famous Wildwood Tramcars in the Off-Season?
This is one question we get quite frequently.
During the off-season, the Wildwood Tramcar undergoes a comprehensive maintenance regimen to ensure its reliability and safety for the upcoming season.
Skilled technicians meticulously inspect each tramcar, addressing any wear and tear accumulated over months of continuous operation.
This maintenance includes everything from mechanical checks to cosmetic touch-ups, guaranteeing that the tramcars emerge rejuvenated and ready to traverse the boardwalk once again.
Since these are electrically powered, its batteries have to be charged a bit so that they don’t completely die.
With the decrease in demand for tramcar services, the fleet finds temporary refuge in designated storage facilities on the boardwalk.
These facilities provide protection from the elements, shielding the tramcars from the harsh winter weather that occasionally sweeps through the Jersey Shore.
But have you ever seen where they are stored? Now you can,
With permission, the Wildwood Video Archive was given permission to visit the sleepy tramcars to show you what they look like in the off-season.

You should have interviewed my husband, he's the head mechanic who keeps the trams rolling along.

Very interesting thank you! Keep on educating us about Wildwood, I came here each summer from the age of 6 to 16, then came back as a young father, and last summer with 2 of my 3 daughters…the oldest one is 32!

Does anyone remember in the 80’s and 90’s they used to make the voice say wa-wa-wa-watch the tram car please? The people operating them must have thought it was so cool back then.

Yes the tram cars were cheeper in years past. But unlike most public transit this systems this is not subsidized by any government money. So the fares have to cover the two person crews, maintenance, and cost to charge the batteries. Hopefully the owner also makes a decent profit from running the trams. If not the day will come when “ Watch the Tram Car Please” will be a thing of the past.

Great video as always. The trams are the one thing I had always a special connection with. The actual trams and the employees that work there. One quick question I hope you could answer. Why is there no number on the primo hoagies tramcar, and why did they switch it to that in the first place?

I miss the rifle light-gun shooting gallery. Used to be on one of the piers- forget which one, was too young at the time. But it was basically a Wild West themed gallery, with animatronics you could interact with by shooting a nearby bullseye. Imagine if rainforest cafe had pistols to set the animals off manually. And also, a saloon piano.

Warehouses have been running fork trucks 24/5 for last 75 years. After 8 hours or so they spend 5 minutes to change out battery with a charged battery.

Great Video Joey! I’m looking forward to another season working for the famous Wildwood Tramcars. I got to drive some of the tramcars to the garage to change their batteries. It is cool seeing the trams in the shed during the off season. It is tight but the maintenance crew knows where each tram set is placed. May 11th will be here soon.

The batteries themselves can still be bought. We usually buy one new one per year. We’re having trouble finding the other parts though. The electronic control modules for the throttle, for instance. We’ve searched far and wide for new ones or someone to repair the old ones. Many other parts are few and far between now as well.

Awesome video Joey! I remember when they used to store them off the boardwalk in North Wildwood and they would run them 1 block up the street and up the ramp onto the boardwalk in the morning. Also, I noticed it looks like 2 of the trams (2 & 3?) in the back corner look to be being stripped of parts possibly? I have not seen 2 run in several years

I knew they're stored at Hunts Pier. I really wish it could come back with retro rides. A smaller wooden coaster like the Flyer, the Scrambler, even some from Marine Pier. The Whip, Paratroopers, Caterpillar. $5, that's inflation! We always buy a book of 25. Even they went up $10

My wife likes the Tramcar, she takes it at the other end of the Boardwalk up to the 19th ave in N.W.. I always do a race with her, I just walk at my normal pace (a good speed), and I always win.

Can remember paying for a 5 year membership at dinosaur Beach for my son. Of course the second year it closed up. 76 er millionaire president & part owner Pat Croce was either by the owner or part owner & nogoodnic said that people with the 5 year membership can get into his $10 million St Augustine Florida Pirate & Treasure Museum for free. Rather he stepped his rich butt up and offered refunds.

Sounds like they use trickle chargers and Optima batteries not lead acid. They have to test each one so that they take and retain a charge. Also fascinating re the tires and also the maintenance. Didn't know about the St Patrick Day use. They need more advertisers!!

It’s not the batteries that are hard to find. It’s the electrical system that connects those batteries to the 60 year old fork lift parts that move the tram cars. And the 60 year old forklift parts themselves.

Very interesting. Only thing is, I thought there were nine tram cars? Engines one through eight which I think were the older ones and then the newer one they got a few years ago that looked a little different and was number E1? If anybody has any information about this and can tell me what I’m missing that would be great.

Those batteries look a lot like the ones used in electric forklifts. There are Li battery options for those forklifts. Could they be adapted? Yeah. You'd have to get new chargers.
@DanielRosenello

They are forklift batteries. The rest of the electrical system is what is outdated. And trying to change that to a more modern system has been an ongoing and very frustrating search.

Dinosaur Beach was how Hunt’s pier rebranded trying to ride the Dino craze that got kicked off by Jurassic Park in the ‘90s. I wasn’t the biggest fan because they added dinosaurs to the abandoned mine cart ride, and I thought that thing was perfect just as it was.

@@chuckm6592ok, Hunts Pier. Yeah, I remember an old white, wooden roller coaster called the Flyer I think. Then a another small train ride that used to weave all under the supports of that roller coaster. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but that was back in the 70's.

$5 for Tram car over priced . Can remember only paying 25¢ for a tram car ride back in the 1960's. The cost if living went up 907% in last 50 years but cry baby Wildwood extremely bumpy tram car fare has increased 2,000% since then. Sure the cars & drive vehicles paid off 45 years ago. Thus small fleet should not require more then one maintenance person 7 or 8 months a year. We had 25 electric fork trucks & over 30 electric pallet jacks that ran 10/6 and one mechanic performed all the maintenance & repairs that only took up 20 hours a week. Modern OC MD tram cars earned $60,000 last year on vidio adds on Tram cars.
