What Happens to Your Luggage at the Airport (and other stuff on the ramp)?

What happens between the time you drop off your bag at the ticket counter and when you pick it up at baggage claim?
In this video, we’ll go behind the scenes to understand what happens below your feet as you prepare for a flight. We’ll look at the baggage system, the loading process, as well as visit the ramp tower.
We’ll get to know what it takes to be a great ramp agent and take a few minutes to recognize just how critical ramp agents and ramp tower controllers are to running a successful airline.
The scale of this operation is overwhelming:
As many as 80,000 to 100,000 bags flow through the baggage system at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport each day. Ramp Agents can load as many as 50,000 pounds of sand on flights in a given day. The airport averages 2,700 daily arrivals and departures.
Check out this video to see how the ramp supports this volume of effort.

As a Delta employee for about 7 1/2 years now, 3 of those years were on the ramp in DTW and CVG. Thank you for covering this, and showing what we do. We are out there in all elements and people don’t understand that we have to get off the ramp when lightning strikes close to the airfield for safety reasons. It’s also so amazing to be in front of a 747 with its engines on taxi power and dispatching it (which is standing in front of it until the tow bar is released and to alert the flight deck by salute that they are good to go). It truly is an unforgettable experience that I will remember all of my Delta career.

As a ramp agent for a Delta contractor, I’ll say this... it never gets old :) seeing our planes up close and working inside, around, under (and above when de-icing) these planes more than makes up for the occasional chaos and unpredictability of airports

The strangest thing I have seen wheeled through a terminal by a baggage agent was the kitchen sink. To this day, I do not know if it was a joke or if someone actually packed everything including the kitchen sink.

I once flew to stay at a family friend's second house for 2 weeks before they went there for the winter. I took my second checked back full of stuff she wanted taken there, including her sewing machine. I was laughing thinking how many sewing machines could Delta have possibly flown cross country. On the flight back a woman asked a flight attendant to help her lift her bag into the overhead bin. It was heavy...because it had her sewing machine in it!

Prior to 9/11 I worked at DFW airport for one of the airlines there. I loved being able to drive around the ramp and see the aircraft from that perspective. I even took my daughter to work with me one time and there was a Korean Air 747 that was there in between flights. She wanted to see it so we got out and walked around it. I then asked if we could go inside and look around since she had never seen an aircraft like the 747. We were lucky that they allowed us to do so. My daughter just recently reminded me of that day and she recounts it as one of her favorite memories. Sadly we lived in a much different world back then, but I am so grateful that I was able to do that for my daughter.

I've ben a Ramp agent for 2 years now, started with United Express with Swissport, to then do International flights and then work United Airlines mainline at Washington- Dulles, then got laid off in January of 2020 and now I work for Delta in Tulsa. So far, these are the best 2 years of my life, working as a ramp agent. The views are incredible, the work is amazing, just interacting with our aircrafts, passengers, cargo/baggage, and the entire operation make me happy, and it makes everything else enjoyable. This video pretty much covers what we do as ramp agent, and I wanna thank you so much for making this video, showing what we do and what goes on every single day! We do more than people think around the operation, and this videos covers all of it. Keep up the great footage. I love to marshal, pushback, load and unload all kinds of aircrafts, just cause it gives me that pride and sense of working in the airport!

as a former delta ground agent thanks for the walk down memory lane. It was a very fun and physically challenging job. Seriously people how many of you have to pack 50 lbs of stuff into those bags?? lol I worked at BNA and primarily worked on the MD88, 757, and the smaller regional jets in the early 2000's. A note of caution for travelers, please make extra effort to pack breakable items in cushioned packing preferably inflatable packing. the ground agents cant see in your bag and we had anywhere from 30-45 minutes to offload 75-200 bags from these flights then load a similar number. Your bags get packed in tight, sometimes they get accidentally dropped, slid across the baggage compartment floor, or not so gently maneuvered onto and off of the conveyor belt in and out of the plane. ramp agents are good people who do a tough job handling 1000's of bags a day at times. take extra precautions for yourself and ensure your valuables are protected.

Westjet had a program for employees (my mother was DDC and based out of CYYC) and their children which allowed them on the ramp and get to do hand signals, see how baggage was loaded and many other things I cannot remember. Sadly the program was shut down a couple years ago to what I believe was safety concerns. Also, thanks mom for jumpstarting my interest in aviation and getting me to start flight school. I've worked as a ramp agent out of Nashville for about half a year or so; some of the odder things I've seen loaded are surfboards (so large they don't fit in a single netted off 'zone' in the cargo bay), an entire hockey teams worth of sticks (~50 or so sticks with their equipment as well) and, on a flight to Minneapolis, a whole ass toilet. Pro tip from a baggage handler: if you want your bags to not get busted, get a roller bag with 4 wheels. In the cargo bay, the ceilings are real short so bags almost definitely have to get thrown to reach the door. If we get a bag with 4 wheels on it, we can roll it to the door instead of tossing it.

Great report! My cousin was a contractor on the building of the Terminal T (Bradley) at LAX and I got to ride along with him on the tarmac. It was a fun and exciting experience waiting for jumbo jets to pass. Security was not as stringent back then.

Ramp Agent for SWA based out of LAX. It’s amazing to see the complexity of the ramp operations for DL in ATL. And appreciate the behind the scenes look into ramp operations and showing all the average joes what it takes to get there planes in the air.

I enjoyed seeing the airport from a different angle. That reminded me of the transport to an aircraft stand for a stair loading at Guangzhou China a few years ago

Well that was a fast 10 minutes! Great video. I recently had the opportunity to visit the tower at DFW airport, and it was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. Seeing the airport from that perspective was something I’ll never forget, but this is on another level!

Looks cool but it can be a dangerous place to work. My pilot friend was being pushed back on a 767. A bump was felt. An agent had gone under the front wheels. He did not survive. The flight was cancelled. But glad you had a great time. A safe time. I salute those workers.

I love these backstages videos! You should do more of them! Not the usual plane video. A real differentiator Jeb, keep it coming.

Fantastic video.......brings loads of memories back to me, when I was in the RAF, and driving around RAF Wittering, the home of the Harrier. Nothing like being up and close to aircraft.

I had a ground level view at IAD back in the early 1990's when I was taking my PPL flight lessons. Impressive!
