a friend of mine in basic had a zippo given to him by his grandfather. it was over 50 years old. when he got his stuff back after basic, it was missing. 2 weeks later, he found a drill sgt who had it and called him a thief. the DSgt lied and said it was always his. the MPs showed up and not only found his GF's initials in it, but arrested the Dsgt for theft.
My daughter is in the Navy. When she arrived at boot camp, I got a 30 second phone call at 345am saying she had arrived and was safe. Everything she took with her, including her phone was shipped home to me in "the box". Once she finally graduated, she went to the temporary holding unit where all sailors go if they have not gotten the orders to "A school". She called me from the pay phones to tell me she was allowed to have her phone back in that unit. So I had to overnight her cell phone to her.
So they don't let you keep anything stored there? I'm just tryna make sure my fiance didn't get robbed I got the box and her diamond engagement ring wasn't in her stuff but I can't ask her cuz she can't makes or get calls yet so I'm shittn my pants 3500$ ring Possibly stolen by whoever ships the stuff out I noticed the ring and a outfit she had on a meps missing but her cloths n shoes she made it to boot camp in came
I rember at reception they asked us if anyone had any porn magazines, this kid brought 10 porn magazines with him to basic at FT.Benning. He had to dump them in a garbage bin the Drill Sergents had a confused look on their faces when he dumped them in the garbage.
When I, at first, was looking to join the Air Force, I was watching your videos, but AF didn't work out. Instead, I joined the Army and felt well prepared. In fact, you were the talk of our barracks because, apparently, you prepared us all and everything happened exactly as you said it would. I wanted to thank you for that. It took the excess anxiety out of everything. I wanted to ask you if you can talk about what we can do as far as the correspondence classes, etc., tips on getting promoted, the timeline. I apologize if you already have a video on this
@@joshmullins1087 Not difficult at all. I was gonna join the Airforce. Took the ASVAB and made an 85. Airforce said they didn't do Loan Repayment so I joined the Army.
The only thing I took with me to Basic Training was the paperwork I was told to bring. That's it. Everything else I would need I was told would be issued to me. But that was in 1974.
DoNot Need in the navy they said bring a wallet with 20$ everything else will be sent home or donated so I just took my clothes and donated them so it's still the same in the navy
My boyfriend left for the hotel on Sunday to be at boot camp on Monday and they said to bring nothing but an ID, SS and the clothes you have on your back.
whiskeytangofoxtrot98 not at Benning. You lose your phone at 30th AG reception the first night. Goes into a plastic bag and put into bins located in your DS office in the barracks.
@Juancarlos Cruz You'll probably stay at 30th AG for 2 weeks, try not to get too down, your ruck marches are a little longer than they say, so just keep pushing. It's pretty easy though. Just be at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform, doing the right thing. Dont fall asleep during fireguard! I had to guard a coffee mug for the rest of the night.
My husband is at Fort Benning, currently in the middle of white phase. I just watch these videos to help me understand what hes going through, it actually helps a lot. Thanks man.
@@sanane6739 he got 4 calls everytime he ended a phase! The first few days they arrive they might let him call and is only able to say he made it, then he has to hangup, theres no talking. I wrote letters and sent them everyday, he would get a lot all at once during mail call. Your boyfriend wont be able to write to you very much but dont let that discourage you! Hes working his ass off in training and has no downtime pretty much.
@@alyssademuth4568 thank you so much But the problem is that I'm in Germany and he is now in Fort Benning I don't know how I can write and send him a letter It's his second day today I don't know how long I have to wait for his first letter so that I know how or where exactly I can write and send him a letter He didn't call at his arrival It will take a long time when I send him a letter and the other way too 😔 Sorry for my English
Yesterday (Aug 13) was my ship off day but I didn’t sleep at all the last night (Aug 12) because I was too excited and boy was I regretting it. I was told to go to Dallas and THEN be sent to Oklahoma and didn’t reach Dallas til (Aug 13 at 6 p.m) and by this time I was dreading because I KNOW FOR A FACT that fort sill’s reception is a guaranteed 48 hr no sleepy time. But holy behold the flight got cancelled due to weather and I’m currently in a hotel that they placed me in and those 13 hours that i slept was only a sign from the army gods giving me a hand. -- By the way thank you Matt ward for the advice you’ve given me ever since I found you 4 months ago.
You'll be fine Luizy. I remember so well, seems like a lifetime ago, when I was waiting to go in the Army. I was under the DEP which means Delayed Entry Program. I joined the Army in 84, June of that year to be exact. As Sept 17 started to get closer and closer, I was really nervous like you. But believe me hon, everyone else feels the same way. You'll do great, take care and God Speed.
When I went to Fort Benning in the 80"s we didn't have cell phones. We used the pay phones. Our cilivian stuff was stored in a locked closet until the day before graduation.
I'm so exited by the end of February I'm going to basic training, I pray I make it till the end and keep moving forward, this is my passion my dream, adapt and overcome guys.
They didn’t take our phones until after reception at ft Jackson, and even then depending on your company, sometimes you’d get it once a week or for an hour every few days, it all depends on your DS. Some guys hid theirs in their camels, with the bag that came from the MRE’s for your koolaid and wrapped their charger tips with something soft and put it in another drink bag. It was pretty ingenious, but the DS’s got keen on it after a few cycles. Don’t get caught with anything you shouldn’t have, get rid of everything tobacco related at the shakedown portion, listen, pay attention and learn. Don’t be the one causing the platoon to get smoked, and especially don’t be the one that gets labeled as a blue falcon.
A friend of mine is an E-9 Master Sgt, and he often talks about his 'drill sgt.' days, years ago in his career. He's expressed many times that he loved being a Drill Sgt., making men out of boys, and he had to be tough on them to earn their respect and mold them into soldiers. Off base and in the real world, he's one of the nicest people you would ever meet, but put a uniform on him and he becomes All-Army, and he doesn't put up with too much of anything from the troops. Oh, and he's been in for 28 years, and he still doesn't want to retire, though he could.
I just wanna take a minute and say thank you. I felt very prepared leading up to signing my contract as well as arriving at Fort Sill. I’ve now graduated and I have to give credit where credit is due.
Fort Jackson the drill sergs will have u put your phone and charger in a bag with your rank and name and last 4 of social on a name tag then they will put it in their office and your bag into a closet and no civ shoes.
Gannon Stephenson thanks for the info. My daughter is on her 2nd day of basic training in Ft. Jackson. I'm just waiting when she start sending letters.
@@jonathansantiagocordova1234 reception u can keep your phone for the first week then right when u get to your boot camp battalion u have to give them your phone
For the Navy it goes like this: You arrive at night, make your initial phone call with your cell phone telling your parents you arrived. After that you go into the ditty issue room. Pack everything you brought with you besides an address book and maybe other things into a box. Write your info and the box is stored until the day you leave
I like how everyone gets packing lists for Basic but then all the recruiters just tell you not to bring anything but ID and a bank card lol Looking forward to shoving what little stuff I own now into storage with my folks and leaving it all in the past.
Interesting, so in Germany we just get to keep all of our stuff for basic, you just have to make sure that what ever civilian clothes you bring are hung neatly in the designated part of your locker or in a duffle bag under your bed.
I went to basic training at Ft. Sill in 2009. I was told not to bring my cell phone at all. Once I arrived I was told if I wanted it I should have it mailed to be. Once that happened. The DI had me remove the battery, place the battery, charger and phone in a Ziploc bag. I only had access to my phone for maybe two hours on Sundays after "Blue" phase. In AIT, we could store our phones in lockers, but only were supposed use them between evening chow and lights out.
Awesome video man. It would be cool to see a video of you showing us how to pack a back for basic instead of explaining it. Like showing us the minimum amount needed to pack or something: just a idea
So this depends on the Branch. In the AF we wore civilian clothes for the first two days. Our bags were brought with us to our actual dorm and locked in a closet, including our cellphones.
I will save you time. At 30th AG Reception at Fort Benning, you get your phone and personal clothing locked up in your personal bag until you are given the chance to call someone stating you are about to leave for Basic Training. When you leave to go to basic training, you will be given a chance to call, stating you have arrived. They then give you an envelope with a plastic bag and your roster number in it. You will put it in the bag and turn it in to the Drill Sergeants. Depending on your company, you may or may not get chances to make phone calls to home.
Hey Matt, your videos have been super helpful for me, a parent of an Army recruit at Fort Benning. My question is , when will they learn what battalion they are assigned etc. I ask because my wife and I have downloaded Sandbox which is a Military app to write letters to our soldier. In order to get the letters sent though, we need his battalion and unit number. When he left, he didn’t have this info
Graduated from fort Jackson last Thursday. When I got to reception they had us do a crap ton of paperwork and then got us PT clothes. After a few more hours they sent us up to the bays and we changed into our PT clothes. I was there for 5 days and we never had to turn anything in and got to keep our phones. We put them in bags with our roster number and they were in crates like you said. We turned in our phones and our civilians and all the stuff considered “contraband”
Hey there! Thank you for your service! I’m being shipped out in 2 weeks. In terms of phone usage, I’ve been hearing, he get to use our phones every Sunday? Is that true? What about foot wear? Did you bring 1 pair of shoes and 1 pair of running shoes? Lastly, underwear, is it true that is has to be white clothing? (Boxers having to be white, socks?..etc)
Got two phone calls (collect) home in Marine Bootcamp back in 1992. First for platoon highest score in USMC history and customs, and second for getting one of the top 5 scores in the company on the rifle range. Nobody was home either time.
Typo Kaz Nah I made this comment before I went to army basic training. For me, after reception, they took our phones and stored them and let us use them periodically
New upload while I'm waiting to leave for the airport, great timing! Thanks for all the informative videos, I know I wouldn't be as prepared as I feel without your channel!
Matt you always drop the videos i need at the right time love the videos keep up the great work you’re a big inspiration to start my channel once I’m done AIT
Matt Ward I want to go into the USNA after I graduate high school (I’m a sophomore) but I am trans and there is a ban on transgender people going into the military/USNA I was just wondering if you have any advice i could use to try and serve and still be out as trans)
I was at fort sill in 08 for basic. We kept all of our personal items during reception but once we got to BCT, they took everything and locked it up. Got everything back on family day I believe
I’ve always heard. Now granted I didn’t serve in the military, as much as I would have loved too, but anyway had friends who served and I was told when you go for basic. They told me just bring yourself. That’s it. That and the clothes you have on. But. This was 35 years ago. Not sure how it is today
My brother just got his coin and graduated in the Air Force it was in San Antonio Texas it was so nice and fun seeing him and hanging out with him after 2 months we got a couple of phone calls tho on thanksgiving to 🖤 I love my brother and while we was there he got me a bear that say someone loves my in the Air Force 🥰😊
That’s interesting in the Marines they don’t even allow that they make you ship it all home. I think this idea is better for all branches to store it in a room.
Pretty informative video. I wouldn’t count on using your cellphone more than 3 times total while at OSUT at Ft. Benning. Used my phone once when I arrived at 30th AG letting family know where I’m at, used at the end of Red phase and on the day of family day. After that it wasn’t seen till I graduated . Best advice for anyone about to hit reception is , it’s the Army . It’s not summer camp, remember why your there and don’t go to sick call! Dress right dress, don’t ever call your drill Sgt. anything but drill Sgt. clean your hands, wipe your ass wipe and stay away from the Females...that goes for BCT & big army.
Hey! So I know this is a little short notice, but seeing as I ship out soon and go to MEPS on Monday, Ft Benning on Tuesday. Can you maybe make a video on Ruck Marches. Like how often they happen? And what goes on. I mean I know, you're marching. But is there more to it than that?
Bored in the hotel, shipping out tomorrow @ Ft. Leonardwood why not watch some more of Ward's videos? Lol. Seriously though, I've been watching the hell out of your videos and I've learned a ton and I gotta thank you for keeping it real with all the tips and information.
Oh damn I went through basic in 2007 and our phones got locked away with our personal stuff the whole time. We had to use calling cards and wait in line at pay phones. I feel old now. Cool to see they have changed those ancient ways!
If you’re going to Sill, they’ll take your phone at reception. The rest of your personal stuff will be kept in your personal bag and locked up at basic
SoftTurkey Ya it all depends on the battery you go to. I was at Bravo 1-40th, they were pretty damn hardcore compared to what I’ve heard. My brother was E 1-79 and they were way more relaxed. However, from what I’ve heard, Fort Sill is nicknamed Fort Chill for a reason. It’s not bad. You really dont need to worry about anything
I’ll save you 5 minutes. It gets locked in your duffle back in a closet until you graduate. Your phone will stay with the DS untill it’s time for your phone calls.
Shipping to ft lenarwood April, 3rd 12b pretty excited honestly feel pretty prepared but the best advice I've gotten yet is dont stand out, and most of all to embrace the suck
They told us they were fine with us using our own running shoes 10 years ago at Ft. Benning. We turned our phones in but another company were allowed their phones on Sunday. Drill Sergeants told us they were experimenting if it would get in the way and we just wrote letters to talk to our families. They took away snacks and stuff unless "you got sent enough for the whole bct platoon. My buddy shipped to Ft. Leonard Wood so I'm curious how they do things now. Super jealous of the new pink and greens and OCPs now, the blues look like ass imo. And ACUs and velcro made anyone look amateur next to a Marine in their cammies since ACUs fit like a paper bag.
I went to Jackson. You keep your stuff and cell phones through reception, but once you ship to your training battalion they lock your civis, cell phones, and other electronics into a contraband room. You're allowed one phone call at the end of each phase or if there's an emergency. We had our phones like 6 times because of hurricanes
When I got to Basic at Ft Dix, NJ in July 1966, I had a small bag with a change of clothes in it. We had no phones. I had to go to the phone center to make a call to Germany where my Dad was stationed. Then I started writing letters.
Back in 07 when I enlisted in the Marine Corps. We weren't allowed to have anything. And whatever you brought with you was either thrown away or stored somewhere that you would get back on graduation. Even in SOI/MCT you weren't allowed to have phones or anything. When you made it to your MOS school is when you were finally allowed to have it with you.
