UreaSmith It is, but it probably has the same wear as a well maintained engine with 500K miles. Even after this, the engine's days are numbered. Not changing the oil has done a lot of extra wear.
I can't believe the mechanic would attempt this cleanup, most places would would say no way, get yourself a new engine. Hat's off to the mechanic though for attempting it, hope it works out.
bryan prindle Yeah man, thats an indy shop for you. We wouldn't touch that shit at the dealer, since its not an approved repair. If it were a car I worked on outside of work, i'd at least give this an attempt too. You can save the engine if the cylinders aren't scored and you can unclog oil passages.
Well, at least the owner knows the oil needs to be changed EVENTUALLY. I had a neighbor who never got her car checked for oil or radiator water or anything else when getting serviced at the gas station. All she did was fill up the tank with fuel and that was it. Needless to say her car didn't last very long and she had to buy another one because hers was beyond repairs.
I am utterly surprised that the engine last this long with only 2 oil changes. So either the oil or the engine or the combination of both were that reliable.
From the looks of the cover for the exhaust headers, it looks to be an Asian vehicle. Looks like a Nissan or Toyota, maybe even a honda. Either way those are some very reliable cars.
Toyota made twin camshafts called (DOHC) with timing differential onto the timing chain. But I may be wrong since allot of Japanese car manufacturers used tear techniques.
my dad said when i was a kid he needed to get a new caddy in the 70's every year? because it didn't run right. lol. never changed the oil.??? wow. blew me away..
From one Technician to another, I felt for you during this video. I know how it is to recommend an engine replacement in a situation like this and to be told you'll do some obnoxious other work that is a band-aid and doesn't address all or even most of the problem. I felt your pain and admired your determination to do the work on cleaning off the head to the absolute best of your abilities even though it was ridiculous that the work was even being done.
135k miles on a 3 year vehicle??? Holy smokes!!! Somebody's been travelin'... That's about 45k miles a year. That's about 15 trips from coast to coast (in the US) per year.
My friends 94 civic (aka the red turd) looked like this when we were changing the head gasket, since the head was off we bathed that B in brake cleaner and gas, made it look like new. After the job we put some engine flush right after and then used maxlife high mileage oil for every OCI. 2 years, 8 OCI's later his car don't tick anymore and it don't smoke at all. Not bad for a $600 car
+Oscar Cruz Well, that shows how ignorant the owner is. He can't do even the most basic maintenance. Even all the girls at my job know you have to change the oil every 4-5,000 miles. One told me her father forced her to learn all the basics before she could ask him for a car for her 16th birthday.
+Oscar Cruz You're fucking nuts dude, the Labor and the cost of an engine would be Ridiculous to do on an engine that runs fine just needs to be cleaned.
No it wouldn't have, at least not if taken to a mechanic not looking to completely screw them. Yes it takes some hours to clean an engine this bad, but throwing out an entire motor for this is just wasteful and not looking out for the customer in the least.
Im suprised you guys did this repair...most shops wouldn't touch this unless the customer would choose to replace the engine...you guys have some serious techs working for you and the guy that did this repair deserves a pay raise lol
OMG! It's a miracle that engine didn't just give up or blew a hole. I couldn't believe it if someone just told me about this. The customer should never ever be allowed to buy another vehicle again. WOW!
I have a 2001 Honda civic ex coupe that I love and pamper more than I do myself. I just replaced the front windshield, new tires, windshield wiper blades, new seatbelt sensors, new canister valve , new battery, new hubcaps and schedule my oil changes every 2-3 months.. It currently has 168188 k and when I bought it used October 17, 2014 it had 150k miles. If I had mad money I would have the entire body done just to make it look newer. All in all, I have a very deep attachment to my little baby and I treat it with love and care. Thumbs up to all drivers who love and care for their vehicles!
Should have just sandblasted it. Everything. The whole fucking car. Then given it back all dusty and said, "sorry, there's nothing we could do for her."
you know what would be good? a quick snapshot of a car that has their oil changed regularly for comparison, visual differences are great for clueless pips like me XD
basically, it's clean, and oil drips from it instead of forming some sort of sticky sludge that you have to scrape of, even a 20yr old car will look like that if the oil is changed regularly, there might be some small amounts of sludge in the oil pan thou, but that's easy to get rid of and is usually only done when the pan seal is replaced
Kia recommends oil changes at 7,500 mile intervals for dino oil. At $27 per change, he'd have spent $486 to have his oil changed on time. From the looks of it, just the labor for this clean out was twice that, and the bearings and rings are likely looser than a $2 hooker and the engine probably needs a full rebuild.
Got to love the guy who's car you're repairing. Too tight to give it a service, even if it was once every 2 years and now has this great idea that just cleaning the engine is cheaper than getting another one after treating it like crap. Only just started watching, but i hope you get to the very end and say "yup, its not repairable", followed by giving him a huge bill.
Wait, if the check engine light is on you can't pass emissions? I'm glad I don't live in a fucked up state like that. My dash looks like a fucking Christmas tree.
The cheapest and best way to fix that would be to replace the engine with a low mile used unit. The current engine would have to be completely torn down and hot tanked to clean all the internal oil passages. The cleaning shown here is only half of the picture.
i have seen this type before..i was dodge tech before.. i have seen 5 cars less than 35k and wont run with no oil change since brand new car.. first car i replace motor.. 2rd-5th cars, manager asked me to attempt to use the engine flush machine. it cost 150 dollars to do single flush. so i asked manager to do twice and manager approved and told customer to do this.. after two flushes and the motor ran and no noises.. havent heard from them since..
My sister-in-law's car is like this - which is why I looked this up. She asked me what to do about it, I said it was too much work for me to do for her and she'd need to take it to a garage. All for want of $30 for an oil and filter every 6 months - talk about false economy. Thanks for the great video.
Had to comment again on this.....I find it hard to believe the customer did not have to add any oil periodically. What kind of person that doesn't ever change the oil, adds oil to keep it full? Holy Cow
+Colin Donovan The owner of the shop who maintains my car (yes, I follow the brand's schedule for oil changes, thank you!) sometimes has idle talk with me on very slow days. He said the worst day on the job was a guy who brought in a nice-looking car. The engine condition was very similar to this. His mechanics were reeling in shock and asked why he never changed it. He said "Oh, but doesn't it say here: every 100,000 miles." How the freak can the car even be running? Wouldn't it be seized up a loooong time ago? They had to do the same thing: completely take the main block apart and clean it out. Took all day and through the next morning, of course.
I've got a 33 year old Mercedes diesel with a tad over 200k on it. under the valve cover looks like new. changing oil regularly and a dash of seafoam or trans fluid about 100 miles before changing oil keeps it all nice and sparkly clean inside
MRsjovealek You're right MRsjovealek, it is a really satisfying feeling driving with clean oil. Especially when you pull the dip stick and the oil is this clean www.dropbox.com/s/p91ik4oc1wc2er6/2016-06-11%2009.55.07.jpg?dl=0 Just perfection.
Awesome Job Cleaning that engine! I've done that plenty of times. It's amazing the amount of crap that can build up inside an engine in such a short time period. People who don't change their oil should not be allowed the priviledge to drive a car!
Congrats on that. I'm the same. My daily is a '98 Sunfire and just hit 102K. My other is a '99 Eclipse RS still at 87K. Garaged '65 Barracuda has 78K. When people sell vehicles claiming to have "low" mileage there's 140K-200K. Bullroar. Since when is 135K for this 3 (now 7 or so) year old car considered "low" by today's "standards"?
More on the old ladies car. My friend did five oil changes using half trans fluid and half engine oil before the oil came out clean. He got the idea of trans oil because an old timer he knew used trans fluid to clean his parts. Since it has to be oily, he figured it could clean and lubricate. It worked, he drove that old Rambler for many years to the Chrysler assembly plant of all places.
I won't say that is recommended to torture people on public for unknowledge about technical stuff. But if a person owns a car it should even know the basics about the technical functions and needs for maintenance -.-''. But this is actually a 'todays phenomena' that many people are using machines without any knowledge and/or without any hint about the technical background. Don't get me wrong, nobody has to become an engineer because own a car, but knowing the general basics isn't just only a cheaper thing, it is also a thing of responsability!
Don't see how this could be much cheaper than a rebuilt engine from AA or whatever. Plus, it's probably got excessive wear on it anyway. At least you suggested to the customer that he get another engine. That' all you can do. What a job!
Reminds me of a top-end rebuild I did on a Suzuki Reno. I had the customer's kids working on the cam floats cleaning them out while I worked on the rest of the oil galleries :D
A lot of manufacturers suggest that, newer cars are every 5 months or 5,000 miles, but the point is, they all suggest that even if you don't drive the miles you should still change the oil as it degrades.
I bought a 1990 volvo 740 with 88k miles, got an oil and filter change when I got it and noticed soon after the oil light was coming on. Turns out that the oil sump is really clogged and its starving the oil pump. Quoted at $700 to drop the oil pan and clean it. The car only costed $1200. Keep up on your oil changes people!!
My aunt had a 04 durango brand new. Never changed the oil. Engine seized at 75K. Only repair was a new engine. Cars are not something to be neglected. This job was easily over $2K, $40 every three months is much more affordable.
As much work as it was to clean that head I wonder if it wouldn't have been cheaper (less labor) to pull the head and hot tank it? I also am curious why the check engine light came on, because of the valve timing adjuster? Be interesting to know just how long it took to clean up this engine (and what the bill was!).
i know someone who had an oil change once at 15,000 miles waited 40,000 miles before getting another oil change done and the filter and the pan and everything was leaking out from every where
Tore the motor out of a 73 k10 and it wasn't even close to having the sludge in the heads like that. Was my dad's plow truck for years and he still kept up on oil changes until it finally spun a bearing
How.....how does this even happen.....how do you put off oil changes THAT long....now the freaking repair cost is multiple times what regular oil changing would have cost.
Although i only took a semester of automotive technology. This one thing that's not taught, seeing how much sludge builds up in an engine from a lack of oil changes. At least this can be a wake up call for those who want to be auto technicians.
how much was the cost in labor and parts vs. a new or used motor for the car? Dude might as well buy a whole new car if he thinks they're disposable enough not to take care of them.
The owner was smart in not changing oil...much money saved and time spent making money..all you need to do is get a mechanic to clean it up just like in this vid. No big deal..very fun job and way more economically vs. doing oil changes every 3000 miles...my hats off to the owner and a good deal for the mechanic because a mechanic is like a Dentist...you don't want people to take care of teeth. no $
Getting an oil change at regular intervals (3000 to 5000 miles) is one of the best things you can do to prolong the life of your car. If you destroy your engine, it will cost you.
before taking it apart steam clean with the oil pan off then flush the bearings rings and oil passeges with solvent blow thru with air and repeat loosen main and rod caps and let the hard stuff pass thru if nothings to worn or spun oil press should b ok then spank owner
I drive a Hyundai Elantra with this same engine ( Beta II G4GC) and 171K miles and it stills runs likes new. Never had any problems with the car but that's because I'm a responsible driver who's always up to date with the servicing. Whoever is the owner of this car, he/she is lucky enough that the engine still starts.
I wonder at what point the owner decided to bring the car in at. Did he wait until he could no longer run the car anymore? Jeez, I can't imagine how that car ran before he decided to clean the engine.
You can tell a lot from a person on how they maintain their car and keep their car clean inside and Out. They Said this car was only 3 years old and the owner neglected it to that point already, How Lazy are you to take it in for an oil change every couple of months... Maybe this person should be taking the bus, that way they wont worry about dealing with oil changes
Thanks for the video. It really scared me into not letting my oil go unchanged. Especially leaving it unchanged for 5 years. That is scary. I see that oil changing is essential and an engine can become destroyed and useless if you don't change your oil often.
Only costs me $70 to change my oil twice a year. I use synthetic and i never go past the recommended mileage. It's horrible how some people treat their cars. Things do fall apart on cars but the engine is what powers the car. You will run into all sorts of problems not checking fluids and changing them out when needed.
Your customer destroyed his own car, I hope you charged him a fortune to fix it, I have a 26 year old ford crown victoria, 101k miles, I have had the oil changed every 2500 miles since I purchased it, the car uses no oil and my Ford Dealer keep the car in like new condition, with all the time we spend on the internet, on cell phones, doing useless things, it amazes me how people can't find the time to do things that really matter.
+Phillp Vavricka Changing oil evey 2500 miles is a bit overdone so it seems. I follow the instruction manual. That is more than enough to keep your engine in good condition.
