Why not play the game, I thought the whole concept of the video was to play the Saturn?

You know what will happen if you play a Sega Saturn in 2017 it will take you back in time 23 years, to the year 1994 when I was 13 man where has the time gone.

The "original buzz sound" is because the use of cheap AV cables, where the video signal interferes with the sound signal :P Even back in the day I used proper shielded RGB Cables and there was no "buzz" at all.

Shows just how good the Saturn was compared to the PS1. Way ahead of its time & still holds up today as does the Dreamcast. Both had amazing games. Lets look forward to the release of "Retro-Bits" Mini Megadrive, Saturn & Dreamcast. SEGA FOREVER. 👍

I think it's kind of cool to watch this guy try a Saturn for the first time. Reminds me a little of when I first got the system in 1997... learning how it works and exploring the sleek user interface. Really takes me back.

You were able to do that with a ps1 also...it would play the game tracks on a CD player some games had hidden tracks

In the menu, the "adjust vocals" function can be used as a "key change" function when you are using a music CD in the Saturn...

What happens is you put in a timeless classic like Dragon Force or Panzer Dragoon Saga and then experience retro awesomeness on an epic scale. Assuming you have the bank to do so, of course. Shit is expensive.

You need to replace the internal clock battery in the back of the console.

Lucky it booted...sometimes they dont boot if the battery has gone flat. Were playing silvergun on boxing day this year.. we all still love Saturn.

CD+G was a disc format that allowed some graphics to go along with the music. Lots of karaoke discs used it, and the Sega CD supported the format too. The channels are just different streams. Most kids likely never used the CD+G features. While you can't play DVDs, in Japan there was an MPEG decoder card that could play Video CDs as well as a few special versions of games like Lunar that used it for better cutscenes.

@Jacob R - the Set CD+G button was for what ch. (3 or 4 for US) The CD with Graphics mode would display on TV.

CD+G is the format kareoke machines used in the 90's. Basically it is a CD with graphics and lyrics that pop up when you put it into a compatible kareoke machine. Both the Sega CD and Saturn had kareoke compatibility.

I had this when I was growing up. I loved it! It can't play DVD discs, (those didn't exist then), but it can play VCD (a cd version of dvd), but only if your saturn was like ours and had a extra card in the back. In america and japan I think, you could even get this awesome thing called the netlink adapter, which lets you play video games ONLINE with other people arround the world, or browse the internet!!! Shame that we never got that here in europe. :(

What happens when you play a Saturn in 2017? You realise it has aged better than the PS1. ;) The CD+G setting was a way of separating music channels - isolating the vocals for example. Could be used with karaoke machine CDs as far as I know. It plays CDs - DVD playback was PS2 era.

Nice! Hope you liked your first experience with a Saturn. Just FYI: The CD+G channel has to do with Karaoke CD's, which were supported by the console. You could control which parts of the music you wanted to play, so that you could follow along with the song and sing it yourself.

I plugged my Saturn in about a month ago and the first thing i played was Daytona USA.

Saturn does not play DVD's but if you insert a card in the back of the system it can play Video CD's.

Of course I could play this, I played this in 2016 to complete Hang-On GP for all I know. The Saturn was an awesome console, and I still play mine even today.

I'm not surprised that the dude is getting roasted in the comments section, but think of it this way; if you've never personally seen or touched a Saturn it's going to be completely foriegn to you. A lot of us oldschoolers and retro collectors forget that there are people who have no experience with older hardware and games. Every experience has a first time, so in that regard the video is relevant. He probably could've titled it better if anything. I picked up a Saturn when they originally released, and I can remember having some of the same thoughts when I powered it on for the first time.

6:50 That's very strange because my PAL Model 2 doesn't automatically boot games if I want to play them if I reset the console. It takes me to the main screen for CDs before in a minute the start application button appears, and I'm forced to wait longer.

The. Reset button should be in the newer consoles too cuz some times the game just crashes and then the game is frozen. Then you have to power off the console and power it back on. And that takes time and it doesn't load the game back on when that happens.

After the dreamcast came out it could play video cds (VCD) but i never seen a Sega Saturn play video discs, although some sega cd games had video like night trap

CD + G was a karaoke standard. Also, when the system said "22 tracks" It was reading the Compact Disc audio tracks from the game. If you put that copy of Daytona into your cars' CD player, I'll bet you it would play. Try it. ^^

Well, I bought my Saturn in January of 1997 and I played that same Saturn last night (Christmas NiGHTs) so I'd say it's a pretty durable machine. You may want to open up the access door and replace the CR2032 battery if that hasn't already been replaced; that retains the saves into internal memory and the battery usually dies after around five years. Unlike the Dreamcast the battery is very easy to replace. CD+G is designed for karaoke discs that have embedded graphics (like lyrics). Most Sega Saturn games use Redbook audio, so they can be played in a standard cd player or through the Saturn's cd function. The space motif and ship that occasionally flies by is the screen saver, and can play with the cd music. DVDs weren't available to the general public when the Saturn was introduced in Japan in late 1994, so putting a DVD in the Saturn would just make the Saturn look at you funny. The clock function on the Saturn can be used with the aforementioned Christmas NiGHTs demo disc. It's a disc that was sent out in the US with a magazine called Next Generation (which is where I got it back in late 1996). Normally it's the Spring Valley level of NiGHTs into Dreams (a game developed by Yuji Naka and Sonic Team of Sonic the Hedgehog fame), but the game utilizes the Saturn's clock function to, in November and January, give you a winter motif. Just before and on Christmas, everything has a Christmas motif with a new intro and ending, as well as a matching puzzle game that you win chances to play. One particular "present", when unlocked, gives you the ability to play as Sonic during the level. The Sega Saturn was considered a flop in the US, though it did much better in Japan. If you get a 5-in-1 cart that can be put into the slot behind the cd access door, you gain the ability to play Japanese games, and that is where some of the best Saturn games are from. Though if you can find someone to do it, have it modded with a chip that gives you that ability with just a switch function (which is what I had done to mine in the late 90s). IMO the Sega Saturn is still one of my favorite consoles, simply because of the titles that only appeared on the system, and the superior 2D fighters provided by Capcom.

Even if your first experience with the system was a bit lack luster, watching someone young go back and appreciate what some of us had (I personally couldn't afford one way back when) is a great thing. I hope you pick up a few good games and really try it out! I recommend trying "Mansion of Hidden Souls"! Thumbs up from me.

It will play VCDs if you have the MPEG encoder plugged into the back. The Panzer Dragoon series are probably the best exclusives on the console, but there are many other good titles out there if you can find them.

Hold A,B,C, and press start and it will reset from the controller do it 2 times and it will take you back to the dashboard where the space ship is.

You could adjust the vocals on any cd, at the time. Pretty cool option, but the sound terminals would always go bad. I returned mine for bad terminals.

A couple of cool features was you didn’t need a memory card to save games all you needed was a C-2032 round battery in the back.it can also play the pre-cursor to DVDs called VCDs which was movies on CD rom needed the VCD card in the back it also improved video quality in games and lastly you could expand its ram which gave it more frames of animations on games like X-men vs street fighter which put ps1 to shame.

Search on the net for more info on this console. In short: CD+G discs are those from karaoke machines (CD & Graphics), yes it will play music CD's (hence the track listing) and any gaming CD with audio tracks (PS1, Sega CD etc.), games are played using the "start application" button, video CD discs can be played on this using a special MPEG cartridge that you need to install in the battery compartment area, and NO it will not play DVD or BluRay discs.

saturn was great for cds cause it had a pitch shifter in it that let choose your level of satan or mini mouse

Thats a saturn ver. 2, it doesnt play dvds but its still a great system, btw change the battery in the back or youll have to set the clock every time u unplug it and invest in a memory card for it as it doesnt have much memory in it

I just purchase and owned SEGA Saturn last year on my birthday... good to know it’ll still works even tho I had Japan version of Saturn and ST Key cartridge that allows me to play any region games. What happens if you turn on an old game system and set a year on it oh nothing at all cause it doesnt care what year it is until you connect to the sega saturn modem which you would think would work since its only been about 20 years later from release date and internet back then really was hard to get working especially since you had to connect the modem with the phone line and hoped to god nobody had to use the phone have i also mentioned that the internet has made a grand change since 1995

Just add a watch battery in the back, set the date and time and you've got the correct date and your saves work.

I really only play Saturn as far as consoles go. Get yourself a 3+1 Action Replay, flash it with Psuedo Saturn and you can play burned discs in it. Try Guardian Heroes (that was the first game we got for it, and most people think the best.) Samurai Shodown 4 (I have a Japan console for that series alone), Elevator Action Returns, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Resident Evil, Fighter's Megamix...endless great titles. Find an old TV and get Virtua Cop 2 with the Japan Stunner (the US one was a tacky bright orange, Japan Stunner was black.)

i just discover sega still sell saturn via amazon and nintendo the gamecube the n64 and thats make me think dont matter how much money u have u can buy a console (of course more money more graphics and function but still a console with games)

Just in case nobody said it get you some CR2032 batteries they will keep your clock and save your data internally. Without them everything will always reset. It's super easy to replace them in there like five bucks for a pack of four

This looks cool. I'm glad that the Sega Saturn still works well even after two decades since Sega does know how to make good machines. The regular Playstation 1 wasn't that good in quality since its games stopped working after 10 years (even the genuine disks) since they have what looks like an expiry date . Sega still rules!

Still have my original Sega Saturn. Lucky i purchased most of my games when the console was not being manufactured anymore..alot if them were cheap. Now they want crazy big bucks for most Saturn games. Very expensive console to collect games for. SEGA!!!

That was prob my old sega saturn i had given it to my friend that i owed 40 bucks i told him he could give it to his kids or sell it online for about 120. I kinda regretted it after a while but then realized you can play all sega saturn games and dont need the physical console or game cd's i currently own the complete library of game files even the utra expensive rare titles and did not pay 1 dime for them. My fav feature of the saturn was the cd player with the lil ship buzzing around u could also manipulate the cd's sound making it low or high slow or fast or even loop a small part of the track this feature to this day i have not ever seen on another console.

This was slightly embarrassing until I realised this guy probably wasn't born when the Sega Saturn launched. I still have mine in great condition.

Yes when you put the correct date on the Saturn or Dreamcast today it will do Offline updates! to what ever game you decide to use in REAL TIME!!!

It doesn't play dvds. DVD did not come to the US until '97 and the Saturn came out in '95. So it only plays cds as far as additional media goes. but it still is a fun retro system. I have every rpg for this system, except for virtual hydlide (because its a terrible game) and panzer dragoon saga (i have it on burned reproduction discs, because i just want to be able to play it.) a lot of the best games for the Saturn are super expensive nowadays. buy in lots and you might get lucky.
