My grandparents old home used to have acetylene lights by using a calcium carbide in a gas generator which would drip water on chunks of CaC2. My grandfather final rewired the house in '47 using the gas lines as conduits and the old gas fixtures fitted with light sockets for the bulbs. My dad complained that electric lights weren't as good a light as the acetylene gas lamps to read by.

Well that was a little fun to watch, when i put those orbeez in a bowl, and then heated that bowl from below, a very weird sound started to come, i left it for 2min, the surface which was touching the bowl got stuck there, it was really very hot, so then i took a stick to take it off, and when it was not stuck there, i moved the bowl such that if there was a marble then it should come in a circular motion with respt to the bowl, then what, the orbeez while performing a circular motion made a very wierd sound, that sound was like a machine gun firing with some bombs blasting in between, they dont want to be in circular motion, if u move the bowl slowly then those orbeez will be stuck where they are, for this spinning experiment i took only 3-4 orbeez, and also while spinning those orbeez will tend to jump outside the bowl while u are moving the bowl...

Here is a trick, I wanted to see what happens if the sodium exploded underwater. I used a metal puncture repair kit which already has small holes in it. I put in a pellet of sodium and clamped it with a G clamp and dropped it into a 4 gallon drum of water. There were a few bubbles and then the drum of water jumped into the air - silently. The water was pushed upwards and the drum followed it. The metal canister was exploded over the ends of the G clamp. There was no bang, the drum jumped up about a metre and then fell down. Four gallons of water would have weighed forty pounds.

Wow dude you have some courage to use that much calcium carbide. In the '90 calcium carbide was used in welding machines because of acetylene calcium carbide prodused when mixed with water. And one of the most interesting and dangerous things for kids were hand made bombs. Those welding machines were widespread in construction places, so incautious workers sometimes left containers with calcium carbide in places which kids could easily reach and take calcium carbide. To make that sort of bomb you need a bottle with cap and a piece of calcium carbide. You put calcium carbide in bottle, spit on it and close the bottle. As the pressure rises, bottle suddenly explodes with a lot of glass shrapnel. And because of this nor you can't buy calcium carbide in large packs you also cannot buy that kind of welding machines.

Sodium hydroxide is a salt, as is most drugs ( xxx HCl) Salt - any chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base, with all or part of the hydrogen of the acid replaced by a metal or other cation.

@The Action Lab This reminds me of a mystery that has yet to be solved. Why does *molten salt (sodium chloride)* explode when it hits water? I think you should do a video on that, but *please be very careful!* Backyard scientist showed that it's significantly more explosive than sodium metal on water!! I have theorized that it has something to do with the leidenfrost effect breaking down, since the surface of the liquid salt dissolves/reacts in water. I don't think that's the whole story though.

Are you not giving thunderf00t a shoutout for his work on sodium water interaction? He helped with that paper.

Minor correction: Sodium explodes because it loses its valence electron in water, and when enough atoms do it,they repel each other at high speeds

I’m willing to bet the main reason why it took so long for the sodium to react with such little water content is the oxide layer

It will react with the water in your saliva and produce sodium hydroxide and probably dissolve your tongue and throat or at least damage it severely.

So I get that bowl of orbeez at the end is dangerous because it is so basic, but what kind of damage could it do if you stuck something in it or poured the bowl onto/into something? Weaponized orbeez seems kinda fun if you ask me
