What happens when you use 10x the voltage on a Raspberry Pi?

Less dramatic than I expected. Links for barrel to usb c adapter below
If the red light on your Raspberry Pi is blinking, this indicates that the power source it is connected to is not providing enough power (check this article to avoid this issue). This occurs when supplied voltage is below 4.63 Volts. The Pi will not be able to turn on without the proper amount of power.
I was expecting something more like in this video by ElectroBOOM

Having the wrong power supply can damage sensitive electronics in the following ways (in order of likeliness): 1. Wrong polarity 2. Too high voltage 3. Too low voltage 4. Power supply providing AC instead of DC 5. Too high ripple on voltage 6. Too high ripple on current 7. Lastly, if the device draws more then the power supply can provide, the power supply will overheat and stop working. However, this should not damage the device (if the power supply is constructed properly). USB-C PD is supposed to solve/prevent all of these.

How does to low voltage damage it? Im actually in need of help with this one as i bought a rasberry pi battery board for the pi 3b+ and it gives me the undervolt warning but it still works fine. Will it break? Please answer

Ahoy, Thanks for your interesting video. I've been using this type adapter for about a year. I bought them originally for a FriendlyArm Nano M4. I use a 5V 4A supply that came with my Atomic Pi. I also use an adapter on my RPi400 and OPi 800. I since bought a whole kit of adapters to use barrel connectors on about 30 different power inputs. I've never blown anything. I've found using a higher amp/watt rating helps keep the power supply itself running cooler. Under powering means either it won't work or the PS gets hot and can fail. Thanks again, daveyb

This video shoould be titled 'how to brick your Pi' some of those pwer supplies are unregulated. i.e. it may say 5 volts at 2 amps, but unplugged its more like 9 volts with no load (device) plugged in. Just buy the proper power supply for the Pi

I tested RPi4 up to 6V and there was no smoke and RPi4 works correctly. I usually have around 5.2-5.5V on RPi4 5V pin and all is ok. Btw I have not seen any RPi4 consuming anything above 2.2A with SSD connected - even during stress test (all cores 100% and dd test on SSD at the same time). The 53V for router is probably because this router has PoE there and PoE is high voltage. Also mistake (I think) in your conclusion here @3:00 - USB PD does NOT drop to 5V - nominal IS 5V. Anything above 5V is ONLY if the load communicated to power supply: "I would like to use 12V/19V" - not opposite. That is why, even old loads would easily work with USB PD - if the loads have no chip to "tell" PD how many volts it wants USB PD will only deliver 5V. With regards to power: what you read on power supply is MAXIMUM power that can be delivered if load requires it - NOT the power that will be delivered unconditionally. It is a load that determines how much power it needs - power on power supply only shows what power supply can do. But I might be wrong ;-)

In my experience, it doesn't matter how many watts a power supply delivers. It is important that the USB specification is still complied with under full load. I loaded the Raspberry PI original power supply with 3A and I still got 4.74V of voltage delivered. Conclusion this power supply is unbeatable.
@zyghom
@zyghom Год назад
no, you conclusion is wrong - corrcect conclusion: you cables are TOO THIN/or too long so the voltage is dropped on the cables and connectors - there is no way RPi4 takes 3A without external devices i.e. usb hdd

What a stupid idea to put non-USB output on a USB plug. A USB-C power supply that NEGOTIATES a voltage within in the standard is one thing, a manufacturer just using a USB-C plug on a non USB compliant power supply is just a disaster waiting to happen.

leeps, would a AOHI Magcube 140W USB C Charger PD3.1 3-Port GaN+ Laptop Wall Charger sufficiently power a pi 5? i dont want to add an amazon link to it but you can easily search for and find it as it's yellow. my thoughts were not, but the build i'm working on doesn't have room for the canakit 27w @ 5.1V 5A bulky white cable. I have a nice USB type C cable that has a an LED display which i wanted to use.
@leepspvideo
@leepspvideo 4 месяца назад
It will work but not recommended as an ideal fit for Raspberry Pi 5 as it’s 5V 3A which is the norm for usb C. Look for 5V 5A in the specifications iaohi.com/products/aohi-140w-gan-usb-c-wall-charger Is listed as 5V 3A

So, the issue that I have with using power supplies isn't so much the voltage but the amps. When I want to power multiple sbc's with one psu. I can find a psu that gives the 3v, 5v and 12v is needed, but the amps are a mystery. How do I ensure that I get the 3A needed out of the psu?

the importance isn't necessarily on the voltage but the supplied current. this is partly because of voltage regulators. if you supplied it with 10x the amperage i would like to see what would happen.
@riccardosacchetti

@ same v (5v), amps should be no problem. If >v watts become critical. On board regulator ~25 w starts heating. I'm going to use a ATX 400w power supply to power my dual 4 bank pi's cluster (4 rp,2 op5+,1 rkpi5, and rpi4b) using 5v on pin header, extending to handle all my fans. Each pi has ssd and/or 2 usb Satas. Satas using EXTERNAL power from ATX...otherwise you'll overload the draw on the rpi's. Rpi sensitive to overload v. 3588 less so. AVR hardly.🥰,jpk I still want a Peltier cooler on the rack using 12v and mosfet on PWM. I'm not concerned about power yet. Mostly lab stuff. Only 1 battery app and it's independent and 3.3v.

Interesting that the 50v adapter did not do some major damage. I accidentally use 12v on a raspberry pi 3b and it burned up several components on the board and there are several components in the power section that get really hot. I doubt it is worth repairing though if 12v got onto the 5v rail.
