One tip, not sure if you mentioned it, fill the trench half way, then lay caution or danger tape down, then fill the rest of the way. So in the future if your digging and snag some tape, you'll know something is down there. Love the videos!

As an electrician, I see nothing wrong with using sched. 40 pvc conduit, I just prefer running the conduit first the snake in the wires. Doing it this way, I also run an additional drag line for future use if needed, use schedule 80 when the driveway has a lot of heavy equipment use, but for your tractors and cars not an issue.
@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869
@gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 4 года назад
Trey Hart you may want a magnetic tape laid over the conduit about 8-10 inches above, but this is usually for high voltage or gas lines. A non magnetic tape can be used yellow tape marked electric is also used in the trades where it would be common area for future digging.

As a seasoned excavator operator on natural gas and oil pipelines, there are many ways to dig the ditch for the lines, but with the piece of equipment that he had, he did a pretty good job of minimizing damage to the ground, I just hope when he backfilled he left a jump in the dirt prior to relaying the gravel as the ditch will settle and you find that you have a small “divet” or “hole” in your drive way as cars pass over it, and then you’ll find you’ll be adding gravel every month until it fully settles. All in all he did a great job for an at home DIY job.

Don't use gravel to level out and first fill hoses. You are creating an underground channel. You want to use sand for this. Spending my whole live working in a gravel plant plus 15 years of experience from running a landscaping business make me suggest this. Getting water under control is about 60% of the labour of a landscaping business.

I bought a yanmar mini excavator this year for light excavation and residential landcpaing. It is very strong and digs great for its size. Only 4000 pounds and shrinks down to 37 inches to fit through gates and small areas. Can a fellow electrician from across the pond explain to me the system this pump runs on? I see 4 wires. I'm presuming black is L1 red is L2 and green is neutral, and yellow is ground? Or is it 3 mains and neutral and ground combined? I'm a bit confused because when we run high voltage (regular would be your 230V and high is 380V) we use L1 L2 L3 and then N and PE(ground). Also cody if you're reading this i'm not trying to be a smartass but a little pro tip; always leave your grounding wire a bit longer than the others so if something yanks on the cable you dont run the risk of not noticing that the thing is no longer grounded. Also a couple of wheelbarrows worth of gravel for $500 WHAT!? Better do it the o'l timey way and just dig it from a river bank or something.

Some possible variations are: Adding a spare conduit or install one larger than required in case I want to add another circuit. In the spare conduit one can leave a pull cord like a scrap piece of rope or wire. Shallow below the soil in the trench one can add several crushed aluminum cans every 10 ft to relocate the conduit in the future with a metal detector. Also having some photos of the trench with respect to the buildings and trees helps relocate the trench later. Adding a board on top of the conduit adds some robustness if later it has to be dug up. If the trench is not straight one can add a pull box at the bend/corner. Even in a commercial building I seem to install larger conduits that required then find a decade later have some idea to add another circuit thus like the future proofing.
@thorzyan
@thorzyan 4 года назад
3beltwesty those are some great ideas. Especially the cans + metal detector. I've always been a fan of taking digital photos, print and laminate (so they never fade, and you can use dry erase markers to plan) and then photos plus notes go into a labeled binder all centrally located. I've made so many "how-to" guides for myself, family, co-workers. Priceless. Nothing worse than one guy having all the knowledge; you're a head bump away from turning an easy project into a pain. Also great for emergency procedures, vehicle maintenance, vehicle operation (or pool, water system, hybrid system, etc). Literally Microsoft word, ms paint, a printer, camera, and laminator... perfect work for Jack. 👍

In the old house here we shot Kodachrome slides (film) before homes concrete slab was poured in 1971. Now after Katrina/2005 I cannot find the slides. The purpose was to record where the water and sewer pipes are in the slab. Looking back I wish the slides were in a safety deposit box! Katrina's flooding scrambled the homes contents and ruined much. If I found the old box of slides and they were ruined at least it would be closure that they are gone.

Witching sticks welding rod coat hangers I'm sure you've seen them work very well. You know you've been to a couple right angles we can hang onto it with your hands and then hold and parallel. They will find water lines that are PVC any power lines phone lines very well sewer lines even though they're plastic it will find them. You have to do a Criss-Cross pattern because if you have a water line going the same direction as your ditch and it kind of can come in your ditch and out if you're walking straight across the direction you're going you won't detect it. I keep them in my backhoe all the time escavator whatever depends on who's running them but they got to be 95% or better accuracy. Work very well to find culverts. Always dig parallel two lines that you're trying to find like a culvert never dig acrost parallel and next to.

I like using Poly-drop tubing opposed to PVC because its a little more supple and less likely to crack if there is heaving or we finally get that big shaker that the PNW has been waiting for. At least you're bedding the pipe correctly but a flexible coupler right at that 90 would have been a nice addition. I got a 300 foot roll of the poly drop and it was enough to put in the submersible pump and run to my well house. It was much much cheaper than using the SCH80 drop pipe

It looked like you were laying gravel on top of the pipe. When my house was built I did all the trenching and installed all the pipe and wire. I made sure to put a good 4 inches of sand above anything I put in the ground so that if I ever had to dig where the trenches were I would hit the sand first and this would let me know that pipes or wires or conduit were close. This has served me very well over the years. South Whidbey Island is all glacial till so you find all sorts of different soil types. But never plain grey colored sand. When our house was finished all the reputable septic installers were at least a 6 month wait so I bought a 1970 something Case 580CK backhoe, even though I had never even sat on one, and installed my own septic. It was a good learning experience and I still have the machine. But given my inexperience with a backhoe, even though I have a few hundred hours easy on the machine, it is a good thing I left markers underground to tell me when to stop digging. That Case I bought 15 years ago was the best 5 grand I ever spent. Loads of fun too.

I didn't read through all the posts below but, could the "jerkiness" of tha backhoe attachment be trapped air bubbles in the hydraulic lines? If there are quick connects there could be air bubbles getting in there during connection. Just a thought. Why do Americans use a shovel without a handle? It's so uncomfortable and unergonomic.

I'd suggest getting a pocket reamer for future plumbing adventures. cheap sometimes free tool that makes a world of difference in quality of work and longevity of your projects.

Those 2.5 inch Irwin PVC racheting pipe cutters at Lowe's are life changing for 30 bucks. It's a must have for any type of pipe work.

We have a remote home too, and have found ourselves in need of gravel that's prohibitively expensive to have delivered. Consider what we did: Look into a dump trailer. A four yard capacity trailer that you can pull behind a pickup truck will pay for itself in short order.

A C-condulet is not a box. I doubt the code norms are different where you are, mainly because the manufacture has not designed it for that use. I realise that may not be clear for non tradesmen. The C-condulet is used as a pull box, not to make unions/joints.

What ever happened to the free chain sharpener? I haven't seen anything from your channel, unless I just missed it. I hope you at least let us know if it happened. You don't have to give names of winners but, at the very least let us know if it was carried through.

Hey Cody, I know you don't read these comments anyway, but I believe you can either move a valve control lever underneath, sometimes in the cab, or change two hoses to convert your controls to CAT Controls. FYI

When a friend had their house built I took pictures of all pipes and service lines before they were buried so if anything is questioned as to where to or not to dig that can be helpful.

I had to chuckle at your frost line at only 2 feet down from the surface. You West Coast guys have it easy. Here in New England...double that to four feet. I wish I had it as easy as you. ; ) Keep up the good work.

You can't change the Deere to Cat controls? Have you thought about building some raised flower beds around the house to put flowers right at the window height? That they double as bullet catches is a side effect to putting fresh flowers/herbs right outside the windows.

Interesting. I put gas line in for a living and the gas company requires us to use sand under and over the pipe. If we put gravel under and over it would almost certainly crush the pipe. Sand forms a perfect layer around the pipe like a mold and once compacted is hard as a rock but still very easy on the pipe so it’s as protected as possible. That being said you have said you have tons of construction experience so I’m sure there’s a very good reason in this case why you used gravel

PVC is cheap. I would suggest that you set in a couple of more runs in the trench for future use, or to replace a defective run. You may never need them if you have them, but probably will if you don't.

Just an idea, but maybe you could explain to people about frost lines and the effects of compaction. Meaning that frost will be deeper in high traffic areas and where the ground is cleared off, such as a driveway.

Just so you know, if that glue your using is christys red hot, it will not bond correctly with the primer. That glue is made for electrical conduit non water tight. You water pipe joints are weakened
@kenwalker4583

OMG You never put wire in conduit until the pipe is ran. The PVC cement can ruin your wires and also adhere them to the PVC making them impossible to remove.

Cody, you should of put a wedge block in the corners for added strength and stability of the pipe from random pressure spikes. Check out practical engineering here on you tube.

Nice video. Back in the day i did the same thing and my boss had to walk it out with the bucket. I was young around 16 long long time ago and it was my first time on a backhoe. I thought he was going to fire me for screwing up but instead showed me how to walk it out.

Do u guys have poly pipe in rolls?, Here we roll out whatever length then tie a fishing line to a ball of cotton then use a air compressor to blow to drag line to other end. We then drag cable thru. Poly is less brittle than p.v.c conduit.www.rxplastics.co.nz/products/pe-pipe

You're luck in regards to your frost line. In central Canada its 4 feet and that said, a couple of years ago we had a lengthy cold spell and a few older houses had frozen pipes because their lines weren't deep enough.

Man if you decide to move one day the people who get that house will be very lucky. To have all that care taken place for the pipes and everything goes miles and makes em very lucky to have these precautions taking place.
