On Jan 18, 2024 the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, gave a speech at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos. He spoke about the benefits of capitalism and the dangers facing those that champion liberty.
To be clear, I'm not saying President Milei's policies are great, I'm saying economic experiments are beneficial. He was democratically elected by the people of Argentina and they will be the ones that benefit or lose from their decision. The rest of us will benefit either way from this experiment.
What do you think? Will President Milei's ideas and policies help Argentinians?

@@JacobAClifford Pretty callous viewpoint considering the growing protests over the fact that Javier has a reckless stance on the argentinian welfare state. I for one agree that less obstacles for entreprenurship and trade is a huge net positive and Argentine is in need of huge structural changes. But as of now basically everyone in Argentine are covered by public insurance and healthcare while around 17% of its workforce works in the public sector. The argentine model is evidently flawed and unecessarily convuluted like its soy bean taxes and what not but its a model that has been in effect for some 70 years. So this libertarian fever dream to just deconstruct it in a manner like Milei is set on doing with little regard for actual people, leaves a pretty poor taste in my mouth. Love your channel, it has helped me pass exams. But this video which presents this in a so blatantly uncritical/biased way is just bleh

@@Isupahfly I appreciate your comment. The point of this video was to argue that economic experiments are beneficial. President Milei was democratically elected by the people of Argentina and they will be the ones that benefit or lose from their decision. Outsiders, like you and I, may disagree with him, but in the end it was the voters decision. Yes, that is callous, but it's how democracy works. Do you agree?

There is something important to point out about the speech . You notice that Milei said in English that INDIVIDUALS are the heroes, not businesses or government . There is a difference . He used the individual deliberately.

I think the president of Argentina is confused with free market and government’s role in free market. One cannot deny the government role in free markets. By the way, the problem of Argentina economy for decades is corruption(people not paying taxes), and other political corruption.

Milei will slash multiple government departments: culture; environment & sustainable development; women, gender & diversity; public works; science, technology & innovation; labor, employment & social security; education; transportation; health; social development. Argentina is going to have even more starving artists, pollution, inequality & stagnation, while children, the elderly & minorities will suffer. When you cut government, only corporations and the filthy rich prosper. It won't even take a year to see how much worse all of these aspects become without regulation.

Assigning and protecting human rights is a legitimate use of government. Other than that, government is too problematic. Where externalities are an exception to how a market works, externalities are the norm for government interventions. Policies by their nature negatively impact people. If a policy did not negatively impact anyone, no policy would be required as people would already behave as the would be law prescribes willingly.

Let me predict what will happen in Argentina, in the short term real GDP will grow faster, people will make more money and have a higher living standard in average. In the long term wealth gap will grow bigger, problems of crony capitalism will become more and more obvious, people who used to play important roles in the previous government will run big companies and gain monopolistic market power. This is what happened in Russia and China. If your country tended to have a lot of corruptions and centralized power in the history, in my opinion it’s very important to establish checks and balances to avoid too much centralized power, this is equally important as free market capitalism.

@JacobAClifford
@JacobAClifford 8 месяцев назад
I didn't go into that because I tried to to keep the video short. Some of his ideas I disagree with are 1. The idea that there are no market failures. I think that is wrong. Externalities definitely exist and free markets don't always get it right. 2. When he argues that all government regulations are bad and attacked neoclassical economics. I think every government policy should be analyzed on it's own merits and outcome. Saying they are all bad is wrong.

As a capitalist, I'd say absolutely yes you know a socialist system does not give the result people want. Let's compare the U.S with their economic systems from past years. U.S while having a small assent of government in necessities is rationally capitalist in nature while India is of a nature of mixed economy too but a greater regulatory authority. Capitalism is what if was implemented in such innovative country from the start, it would shined everywhere. Also yea I don't know why we compare countries based on their gdp when they should be compared on their GNP.

@ashutoshganguly6717
@ashutoshganguly6717 8 месяцев назад
Capitalism is a good thing for a less populated country but for a country which carries over 500 million + people it's not a good idea because jobs will be less and more people will engage themselves in small scale self employment as everyone is not rich and people will opt for loans but if the economy is not socialistic then acquiring loans will be more difficult for the max number of masses and due to capitalism corruption will increase and illegal activities like tax evasion through paper companies in tax havens will go unnoticed and the govt will simply act as a puppet + the most important thing is resources and transportation of resources, location of the countries, geopolitical relationships between the countries, the number of against your vision and their location, it's easy for USA to use capitalism because their location is suitable to reach every part of the world, they're not face to face against China, they don't have anyone to oppose them in their continent + they are directly not involved with any country when it comes to border conflicts, maybe except Russia but it's not a big deal for USA to control their military in the north western front against Russia. The degree of capitalism is way more in American for the above reasons + they have quality policy makers, other countries also have these same kind of policy makers but the level of challenge is different, it's not easy for American govt to handle the internal issues but they also get involved in other issues instead of handling their own issues, they like to get something out of each conflict going around the world. Uncertainties, population pressure,pvt organizations, the general public, trends , resources, govt, demand , employment, jobs etc. , there are so many factors involved in shaping a economy.
