What Holds a Country Together or Tears it Apart? Crash Course Geography #36

Today we’re going to talk about the forces that affect a country’s stability. We’ll take a closer look at Costa Rica, Venezuela, Cuba, and Brazil and examine how the cohesiveness of these Latin American countries varies dramatically even though they are in a region with similar characteristics. As you’ll see, a country is like a figure skater, and maintaining peace and stability is much like a pair performing a “death spiral” balancing the forces attempting to pull a country apart and keep it together.

Would love to see a full Crash Course: Political Science someday. This is almost a pilot episode for what that could look like.

Oh, eh... you kept it pretty clean there on the "containment theory" part where you say it's basically just "negotiating alliances" when It's often directly funding and supporting state-terr0rism.

Fascinating lesson, but I must shout out that awesome shirt. It's like the fashion love child of David Bowie and Miss Frizzle, and now I'm thinking of the Magic School Bus driven by Ziggy Stardust.

This was a very, very good presentation. I even appreciated the acknowledgement of communism as a derivative of socialism that never achieved the end state of no classes and no state. My only critique is glossing over capitalism as a free market. In an ideal state, maybe. However, the US, for example is not a true free market. The state and corporations are intertwined. In a true free market, there would not be government bailouts. If a business made reckless decisions and became over extended, then the end result is collapse or acquisition by another business. The easiest way to compare and contrast socialism to capitalism is that in the former, the state controls some business and means of production whereas the later business controls some of the state and means of production.

I know the idea of the video isn't to be super deep. But wow, you guys were extra superficial in the political analysis of SA. Through my entire life my country has suffered US interference. "Containment theory" is a very neutral take on this subject, given how outspoken the videos have been in the past.

Can we get a video on red meat messaging and it's use and effects on the populace? And how to read/listen critically and discern opinion from fact? I think it's time. A video on critical listening.

I think economic growth is way more important to stability in the free world than most people realize. Democracies are based on the idea of everyone sitting around a table and giving everyone more and more each year. This happens when the overall pie is growing rapidly. When the pie is not growing, the only way to get ahead is to take it from someone else. And that's when democracies break down. That's why I think democracies are seriously at risk this decade. (Not including China and the group of unfree states they are siding with)

Interesting to repeatedly use Brazil as an example of authoritarianism rather than including some other examples such as Russia, Poland or Belarus. Also the complex example of China with an extremely stable state run in an authoritarian manner.

Nice, having the courage to call out socialism/communism for its failures, although its important to note that Norway and other Scandinavian countries are Social Democracies, not Socialist (which is probably why you said "Kinda"). Excellent video as always CrashCourse!

What is keeping us "standing still" is the atmosphere. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ljjLV-5Sa98.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_force#:~:text=Centrifugal%20force%20is%20an%20outward%20force%20apparent%20in,be%20made%20relative%20to%20some%20frame%20of%20reference.

its a bit of an oversimplification - the centrifugal force is actually a fictitious force created by non-inertial reference frames, its basically a mathematical correction term. They're technically right it doesn't "exist". You may be thinking of the centripetal force , which certainly exists !
