As if finding the best electric rate and plan wasn’t hard enough, now some electric companies are trying to keep brokers from helping consumers get the lowest rates. KPRC 2 investigative reporter Amy Davis is looking into this battle between an electric provider and an energy broker that has customers caught in the middle.

Electricity prices are getting out of hand.

Mine are still the same as 2 years ago. May have gone up half a cent or so but that's about it. I live in Hunt County. We only have Farmers Electric in our area but it keeps its prices down.

It's the dang delivery fees you have to watch out for. It's insane.

10-4 on that! When I do the math on my TDU charges it doesnt always match the stated rate(even taking into account the winter/summer rate differential). Also with the 'explosion' of companies now offering 'bill credit" plans(since I signed with 4change energy last year), the ONLY way to get a sub . 14 rate(TNMP) or sub . 12rate(Centerpoint) is to LOCK IN to one of these long term. (The caveat is you HAVE to watch your usage!).Otherwise flatrate plans will put you at 17cents+(essentially 50percent+ more on your bill). And with the derecho storm bills coming, don't think aren't headed even HIGHER.

Same in California. Delivery rate is almost twice the generation rate. Then when we reduce usage they raise rates or add fixed fees to ensure their investors make lots of money. So keep your eyes open down the road.

This is a shame! Meanwhile Reliant says they don’t have a better plan to offer me. Free nights is the biggest rip off ever!!!! Unless leave your home at 6 am and don’t return until 8pm 7 days a week! My contract is ending in 3 weeks and so is my relationship with Reliant

@@houstonmuslimah I left reliant to go to Green mountain energy about 7 years ago. Green mountain energy was charging me $0.05 less per kilowatt damn reliant was. I found out six months later that I was paying $0.05 less and wattage but I had to pay an extra $40 fee if I did not use reliant. When the woman show me how I was paying extra for not using reliant, I went back to reliant and don't even think about leaving them. I just signed a 5-year term for $0.16 a kilowatt. That is the cheapest across the board right now. I paid 10.5 cent a kilowatt for 3 years prior to. Everything is going up because only a few companies on everything in an industry so they don't have to compete with lowering prices. No president can stop this unless they try to do what Obama did and Obama tried to stop all of these mergers but the rich people own this country.

The shenanigan pricing needs to be outlawed... "Get a 50% credit and some free light bulbs when you use over 54 KWh during nights of a full moon or days that start with F... unless the full moon is on a day that starts with F then its double the normal rate."

Yeah but I have one of those plans and it works great for us - we get a $100 credit once we use 1,000kwh so I monitor our usage weekly and I make sure we always go right over the 1,000kwh. Do not take away my plan that works for me just because you do not like it existing

I checked Rhythm. They offered 16.1 cents for 12 months,14.5 cents for 6 months, and 16.3 cents for 36 months. I pay 15.6 cents with Champion.

I usually use powertochoose. I'm currently at 12.6 cents through Direct Energy through February. Around that time I was going to look into Energy Ogre which is like Rhythm. My daughter's boyfriend and parents are using it and it is saving them a bunch of money. Needless to say I will be keeping an eye on this situation.

You will be f'd over any which one you choose as they will side with the companies over you and leave you to pick up the tab for their failures and repairs. Grid repair in Texas was something Abbot initially was going to have the energy company cover. Instead, he ended up taking a 50k donation and swapping his stance, and now we Texans are all on the hook for the repairs for their failure.

texas sucks when it comes to power. when we lived in corpus we had to pay double power because we had to pay for asp since they owned the lines but we couldn't have them as power co so we had to pay 100 to asp then pay green mountain so our power ran 250 to over 400.

Just use Reliant because you have to pay a fee on top of the wattage with the other companies.

I was told companies were people, and money is speech. So it's company on company crime.

Using solar panels to trim your usage closer to 1000kwh will ONLY benefit you in summer For any usage less than 1000, you will get penalized with HIGHER rates, meanwhile their solar farms allow them to harvest FREE energy which they sell to you at ever increasing rates.

I can see a class action lawsuit coming to this electric company! What they’re doing is illegal. A customer has the right to choose a broker to find the best deals they can to save money

A lot of HOA's have solar bans, mine included. Good luck fighting that.
