Not only should you avoid engaging the switches while moving, you should also be stopped when you DISENGAGE the switches. Some trucks may be damaged if the truck is moving when you disengage. I know first-hand, doing so will shear the teeth off of the differential on a Peterbilt 352, even at 5 mph.

I’m an off highway logger, we lock n unlocked while in motion all the time. We have to to keep up our momentum. With 70,000 kgs net aboard you have to. As long as you aren’t putting power to the wheels n just rolling you’ll be fine.

You must keep your foot off of the accelerator when you lock and unlock the interaxel differentials.

We usually just lOn my prostar I can lock teh rear diff interaxle ( RRaxle) without having to engage the PDL switch. In Canada we often rely on momentum and finesse of the steering, brakes and throttle. THat is the most important. They use chains in the mountisn, I am out east where there arent really any mountains but it can be icy so number 1 is SLOW DOWN

It's my understanding from watching this video to change any of the traction control settings you need to make sure the vehicle is at a complete stop and none of the wheels are rolling to enable or disable a traction control function. TL;DR warning; a memory flash back. I was a commercial driver; none of the vehicles I've driven have traction control. Unfortunately, I had to surrender my CDL for disability reasons. I couldn't pass the the DOT physical due to a complication of major spine surgery. I cried my eyes out when I got back to my personal vehicle after being stripped of my CDL. I kept my chin up at the DMV processing the downgrade of my license. It wasn't the DMV's fault plus I didn't want to make a scene. I did it voluntarily because why fight it? I have a medical condition that prohibits me from having a CDL. One of the worst things a human being can experience is having something you enjoy doing taken away from you. I enjoyed driving a bus and was thinking about upgrading my license from a class B to a class A so I could drive semis. I enjoy your videos on CB radios and trucking. It makes me wish I could be a truck driver. I would love to explore the USA as a trucker. You pretty much get paid to drive across the USA. Stay safe and healthy.

@@jrichtruckincbtips It is what it is. I've accepted it. At least I can still drive personal vehicles and go off roading.

You are mistaken about the rear axle not having power. It always has power going to it. When you lock it in everything just turns at the same speed. You might want to update your video.

Use your Jake to take the strain off the drives and the locks will release faster for you. Just a little rattle of the Jake to rock the weight ahead a little and the lock releases.

Yeah my fld120 only has the power divider lock but I haul gypsum in an end dump and I'm at 88k and when gypsum gets wet it's like walking in bearing grease thick and slick and my truck pulls the weight up in to the dome just fine

All applies unless you are the victim of an older tractor that does not have inter axle control. Every truck Ive ever used always had power to the rear axle, it being the main drive axle. In that case, the interlock switch just engages the forward axle, giving the tractor two drive axles instead of one. Both axles have open differentials, so it's NOT 4WD. It's just two ordinary drive axles like a car. You have ONE wheel with power on the FWD axle and ONE on the rear axle. In snow - chain up. Legally, you are supposed to chain all four duals on the tractor, and at least one on the trailer. Unless states specify otherwise, you can just chain the outside tires and one on the trailer. Chain them TIGHT - not sloppy. It's easier than chaining a car. With chains, even open diffs are like a tank.

Thank you so much J rich!! This answered everything that I was wondering about. And sorry for the long channel name 🤣 haha I should change it to something shorter. But once again much appreciated brother and keep the greasy side down!

@user-cr3oe4jd4h

That's not entirely correct. There's always power going to both axles. The power divider allows the axles to spin at different speeds unless it is locked then they will spin at the same speed.

I'm the son of a trucker and my dad has an international 9100 day cab and I realized there's something called "wheel lockout" what does it mean and do?

Hey @J Rich I have a quick question… is the K40 antenna just as good if I get one with the big spiral coil vs the black “fishing bobber” I think the coil looks bad ass on dump trucks but I don’t want to have a lesser quality if the coil kind isn’t good. Thank you brotha!
@jrichtruckincbtips

I haven't used any K40 antennas, but people in the chat groups say they work well and generally have no issues.

i find i have to use the inter axle switch when i have to back up minor inclines (to dump) in my end dump when loaded. otherwise the cab just shakes like crazy and im like good lord quit that. im still really new to what I'm doing so im poking around videos to make sure i dont tear up shit on accident

That sounds like there's another problem, especially being loaded. Unless the majority of the weight is on the trailer axles.
