The Industrial Revolution was a period in history where factory work was beginning to claim dominance over the workforce, beginning in England and eventually spreading over the pond into America.
But lacking in regulation, oversight and, in some cases, basic knowledge of disease and how it’s spread, the lower class citizens and factory workers of this time lived in literal squalor.

Urbanisation hadn’t really yet begun so it was mainly agricultural land and peasants who worked on said lands owned by merchants and the rich. They tended to inherit their lands through different land systems (depending on the country) and often were powerful because many couldn’t vote without land. Urbanisation begun around the 1800s but didn’t really take off until 1850s onwards in Europe so the factories although unsafe didn’t have as high mortality rates as mechanisation hadn’t really happened which led to the deadly conditions. It was mainly farms, mills, etc in the US and UK before the 1800. Hope this helped I studied this time period lol!

Turns out midwives and doulas used to assist in childbirth and the mortality rate was I believe 1.5%. And then male doctors decided childbirth should be done in hospitals, and midwives were banned from the practice. That’s when the mortality rate shot up and purple fever became more common from poor hygiene. I wonder if it was similar in Britain at the time.

@@jasonblalock4429 I trace my Dad's family through London for hundreds of years. Mostly in the lower classes. London's population grew due to a constant influx of immigration but the death rate was higher than the birth rate. Most of the people arriving didn't live a year. My family didn't just survive that first year, they survived centuries. Although, I noted that a lot of them lost spouses. Especially Irish and Norwegian immigrant husbands and wives died young from the usual suspects.

Dr. Snow, as cited in the video, is the main protagonist in the book "Ghost Map", which I highly recommend. In the book it goes on to show/prove that (funny enough) employees at the local beer brewery and were given daily rations of beer did not get sick. (To make beer, you have to boil the ingredients, which included water; but the heating process killed off the germs).

Bradford is incredibly multicultural but I don’t have an issue with that in the slightest! It’s just become a very poor city, slum like conditions in some areas with slum landlords. The council spend money unwisely, very little opportunities for young people, a lot of issues with drugs and organised crime. Organised people trafficking (my partner is a detention officer and deals with them daily). Go back to the 1970’s and it was a thriving city, it’s really sad!
