But having been a manager of data analytics and now a senior business intelligence engineer in tech (FAANG), I've learned a lot and I'm excited to use my experiences to help you navigate your career path. I hope this channel gives you the clarity and motivation to get started!

Having jumped into learn data analysis to change careers I have noticed something. Learning the tools is fine. Understanding the hypothesis or problem question makes sense. Maybe you've done it already, but I haven't really seen anyone make a portfolio project showing a problem, and how their dashboards solves it. I think it's hard when practicing with kaggle data to find a problem and solve it. When learning I practiced the usual orders customers shipping type queries, but they never really explain what they would do in the office with the results. Maybe those get emailed in a report? I don't really know. I finally get that they are practicing with 20 lines to teach us the basics, when in reality it might be 100,000 rows. Thank you for your videos, honest insight, and resume template. I really appreciate your work!!!

Honestly, managing other people's unrealistic expectations and lack of direct clarity in their communication (often not even knowing what they themselves want) and presenting layered and complex patterns and hypotheticals as simple, "user-friendly" concepts is already my full-time job as an autistic person just living in society, so tbh I feel like I'm built for this. 😅

I would love to know more about how you decided to start your career as a data analyst. You mentioned work-life balance as a factor, but you didn't mention a solid reason. Speaking for myself, I got interested in data analysis because I was good at focusing on neglected details like observing ingredients or calories on food products. Fortunately, I had experience using Excel in college which helped me take my data analysis journey to the next level with pivot tables, querying data, data visualization, and so on. I suggest that you create a video on why you chose data analysis as a career.

I’ve been thinking about becoming a data analyst but I have a few concerns about what kind of data analyst and if it’s right for me. My main concerns are having enough time to pursue my hobbies. Which I don’t expect to goof around so much once I’m in the workforce, but I want to carry my hobbies into adulthood. I am also concerned that my ADHD could impact my performance, but I think training and getting experience with activities related to data analysis could solve that question. My main reasons for being interested in this job is because I think it would suit me well, and the paycheck can hopefully fund my interests and hobbies as well as every day life. It also seems to allow flexibility in lifestyle since you can work remotely. Does anyone have advice on how to find what kind of data analyst would be best?

I hope they pay you a combined salary of a DA, DE, and BIA if you have to fix a data pipeline, find the raw data, clean the data, understand the business problems they need you to solve, then reporting it in a visualization/report. Thanks for sharing.
@agathakang
@agathakang 2 месяца назад
haha you would think they would pay a BIE more than all those roles! The pay is more than a DA as yes you have to do data pipeline work but less than a DE as a DE has more technical back end work

What is the difference between IT business analyst vs business analyst?
@pixie_lilac

Hi, I enrolled in a bootcamp of data analytics. Can I work in a different country after experience? If yes, how many years of experience is considered ‘good’ to be able to work outside?
@agathakang
@agathakang 4 месяца назад
Hey! That really depends on the company. I would say having at least 2 years experience in general shows that you can do the job regardless of whether you’re in the country or not.

What were the resources you studied while transitioning into data Analytics? And were you learning while working in the business consulting firm?
@agathakang
@agathakang 4 месяца назад
Hey! I used datacamp (link in description) and linkedin learning as resources. I used basic excel and only select sql statements when I was a consultant so I had to study on my own to get to an intermediate level and prep for the data analyst interviews.

@agathakang Do you need to have a computer science degree to have a career as a data analyst? BTW I found this video very informative and insightful.

Hey! No I don’t have a computer science degree either and skills are becoming more important than the degree itself. Glad the video was helpful!

pls reply. hey Agatha, can u rate a python 1 out 10, how much is use in data analysis field.
@agathakang
@agathakang 4 месяца назад
Hey it depends on what type of data analyst/industry/tools available that you will use python. Even within my team, I have seen some team members use python for almost everything whereas others barely use it. Personally, in my role I don't use much python for data analysis and use it more for data engineering tasks like loading data.

How do YOU manage those stakeholder expectations ? I can see a lot of last minute or late nights because of their unreasonable expectations
@agathakang
@agathakang 3 месяца назад
Good question! This is something I still struggle with but I've learned that having a system for ad hoc work to be submitted and prioritized really eliminates the last minute asks because it is understood by everyone including the stakeholders that the work has to be prioritized through a proper sprint and not just done last minute.

@agathakang thank you ! Wondering if you can elaborate on this more in a video ? Maybe also discuss how you deal with stakeholders (ahem* aka egos) and if they have issues with your analysis results 🤔

Only thing I disagree with is anyone can be a data analyst. I’m a project coordinator dealing with similar situations on a smaller scale and it’s definitely not for everyone. A lot of people would have a mental breakdown when you have so many demands flying at you. Glad they pay these people well they deserve it!

Is it possible to tell them a cut-off time? like, say after 5 pm, I will no longer answer pings? So if you wanted to , you could catch up on the pings from during the day?

Yes that is setting boundaries! I didn’t do this well when I first started but definitely do that now and wait to respond to pings the next day if it’s after 5 pm 😄

I can confirm that we get asked for reports last minute and even before the information is available. So a partner wants the report about this months project spending and it's still the current month, LOL. So yeah he asked "early" but the info won't be available for days and then it's crunch time. And yes, they also call you at 5 PM and say they to price a project by the end of day so they can present it at dinner with the client... 🤣

@agathakang
@agathakang 4 месяца назад
Thanks for watching! Are you asking about data scientist vs. research scientist? A data scientist draws insights from data whereas a research scientist doesn't necessarily work with data. They focus more on experiments and studies to answer questions.
@ProfBoggs
@ProfBoggs 3 месяца назад
Your description of being a data analyst and dealing with unrealistic expectations is a lot like being the only researcher on a team of colleagues who possess limited quantitative skills. They frequently have no idea how much work it takes to produce a "simple graph" (or map). They just think you push three buttons and viola! Data analyzed. They don't understand the data collection process (e.g., running surveys using an actual random sampling procedure, or even just finding administrative data sets), limitations of the data, processing/cleaning the data and so on. Especially if you are doing something new. Thanks for the opportunity to commiserate.
