the mentality has to be changed too. I saw so many locals throwing their trash, whereas they could have burn it. Or even in ferries, they throw in the sea, whereas some trash cans were available
I agree. I feel the same about people who come to America and never try to learn English. I would learn the language of the country I moved to. I would want to. I don't understand people who don't.
@@Moorefamily4510 its their choice bro lol. Plus you don’t know the difficulties they may have experienced trying. That’s a really strange american perspective to have. Kind of entitled/arrogant.
I lived in Bali for six years and had to leave because of the tourists and how fake it is, everyone reinventing themselves as some new age guru or breathing specialist...
I am a scientiest who do research about plastics. actually, most plastics in bali is from surrounding islands and countries... even you will get plastics from vietnam brought by currents
I swear, I so love this channel! Luke, you are amazing at what you do. This is when you know you are doing what you love and are destined for. Wishing you an abundance of blessings!!
Only those 3 things bother you in Bali, that's Nothing. Still think it's an amazing place and can't wait to go back. Thanks again for the content. Realistic and honest. Fantastic.
Hello bro, Im from Indonesia and I am surely 100% agree with you. You such a nice and humble guy. Wish you have a good life and hope can come back here again.
I lived in Bali for 31/2 months and was surprised at how few bugs I saw. I saw 2 cockroaches and got stung by mosquitoes twice. I did live in ubud for a little over a month. Mostly I lived in sanur. I loved and miss it so much. I will say that there was just as many ants as the U.S. Garbage is a problem! But, I would love, love, love to live there. It is my goal, for at least 3 months a year.
Bali has an element of tourists who disrespect Balinese people and treat them as peasants. The Balinese are not rich and selling to tourists is how they make a living. I don’t like over negotiating a $2 item. I really enjoyed Koh Samui in Thailand better but the best true island experience was Koh Lipe.
@@gusdewan2109 Hi Gus, I changed my wording. In America, any average person can buy a new car right out of high school, even working at Starbucks. I spent time on the north shore with my friends and believe me, they did not have even a bed. So I would say they are not rich instead. Thank you
@@gusdewan2109 you commentating to a dude that literally not from Indonesia , you know that every country has their own rich criteria. And just let you know went to another country doesn't meet rich criteria in such place as US , they actually does that almost every weeks or day
Pak/Mbak Lucu Balinese, don't forget the bule prices (not tourist) like bule is an ATM. Also that no respect towards foreigners, always laugh at them and they cheat them. However there are also many silly bule who goes there for Eat Love and Pray. Lol. 😁 have no clue about anything. I can't stand those bule. One more: the no problem mentality. If anything happens in traffic or anywhere else, bule is the reason. Bule is to blame, regardless of who is right.
@@krajchek How rude. like in any other part of the tourist places in the world, it’s possible to meet unpleasant people but not all Balinese like that. Not to mention not only Balinese live in the island, same like not only Californian live in Los Angeles. We usually respect foreigners not because look at them as ATM like you said but we live from tourism in ages, we welcome them and eager to learn their culture/language as well from them in return we expect tourists who visit the island respect our culture as well. Try to be positive with your attitude so you only get positive outcome. Like this video show how polite he is.
@@topofthetreev6263 Not rude, just reality. Everywhere there are great people. This video was about why we DO NOT like to live in Bali. And this maybe an eye opener for you. How your fellows are. You are nice, and I have many great Balinese friends :) we love Bali in general but we see the reality also. Not only the mainstream nonsense that it is so perfect. We must always be careful and tricky not to be targeted to the above things I said. True that also other Indonesian people from outside makes it worst. Sadly. These must be mentioned! Regardless. So video should also. Bottom line still remains, we love Bali and for the people like you!
@@topofthetreev6263 what are you talking about? Im half Indonesian, been to Bali many times. I dont speak bahasa very well, but enough to know what is being said. Do you know how often i caught them asking me prices that were almost 10 times what they asked locals? See a waterfall, and they try to get you to pay 200k. When it's free!!! Or taxi drivers, those are the biggest scammers. They will say the meter wont work, blabla, and ask you crazy prices. Im not stupid so i just use go-jek or grab, but i see what they do with tourists. And usually i tell the tourists to use the app aswell, and the taxi drivers will become angry. But i think they are their own enemy, if you would ask me a normal price i wont care. Also, thinking you can scam tourists because they block the go-jek and grab drivers to enter the airfield or train station is just a joke, like i cant walk 5 minutes to get to a go-jek or grab driver. Saying people dont see tourists as an ATM is just a lie. And i lived in Bali and Java for a long time, so i know what i am talking about. Especially because i usually start out in English, because i know most drivers love to practice their English. And when they are on the phone or whatever i can hear how they speak about me and i will tell them they are being "kasar" and i can see the shock on their face and they apologize. Same thing when renting a motor, when i start in English the price will be 5 times the normal price. So please, stop with protecting people who dont deserve it.
My first month in Indonesia, I spent every morning just picking up the trash along the road I lived on, and the next day it would be the exact same. After awhile, I just have up. I'm not contributing to the problem, but I'm certainly not helping now.
I cared about it until I realized it didn't do any good. I only worry about my house and what's inside of property. I currently live in an area that people cut through to get to a main road. Right outside my fence, trash everywhere. My neighbors look down on me cause I don't clean it up, but I just don't give a damn anymore.
@@danieljones1784 omg you so good🥺, bali its not that good to stay too but more good to travel,am so sorry if someone or smth still throw up trash not in the place:( in near your house, btw sorry for my broke eng, hope you still want visiting bali soon🥺❤️
Thing I don't like: - Corrupt police (In Indonesia in general, in Jakarta I had a bad experience with this, (fake) police trying to scam me, they just stopped the taxi I was in wtf.. in Bali it isn't that bad I think though) - Rude tourists (I feel for the Indonesian people sometimes lol, but at least they spend money :) - People that snatch bags, phones and steal items (never happened to me, just use common sense like everywhere else, it's pretty safe, just heard a lot phones stolen and snatching bags on bikes) - Places like Canggu getting TOO touristy (still a fun place for parties and maybe connecting with entrepreneurs (most are just starters though). - Mosquitos that carry Dengue (very rare lol, out of the thousand(s) people I met probably 1 person had it). I don't want to discourage anyone, the food, people and nature are very nice (except a very few). I still probably will go back there tho, I made nice Indonesian friends. Ok this was my random youtube comment for today
You are damn right about police in jakarta! I wonder what the police chief is doing? Horrible! Disgusting, sirry to say... I am Indonesian livijg in jakarta and I get so pissed off whenever Inget stooped by corrupt police on the road for no apparent reason. I always argie with them and stand my ground ubtill they give up and get nothing frok my wallet and I wim most of the time LOL
@@temastudio5275 @Hendri Soh About 5 policemen stopped my taxi to the airport at late evening (I wanted to catch my flight home and I was alone). They said my passport missed a stamp, and they wanted me to go to the ATM and pay them 200-300 dollar. I was like wtf is this shit (but I acted calmly), and I started to video record them because they didn't let me go with my passport. When I recorded them they told me to stop recording, and I acted like I stopped, and then they gave me my passport back and let me go. The taxi driver didn't say a word while the police tried to scam me, probably because he was scared? Or he was part of the scam? Not sure. It was an official taxi. Afterwards he said like 'police bad' though. I was so relieved when I finally caught my flight and my passport was actually fine. So for the tourists: just video record the police if they try to scam you. They will get scared that their career can get hurt. I actually think you can get them fired if you want to go that far? I still like to visit Indonesia though, and I have made a lot of friends there . I don't think this is a common situation, but it can happen. I never had heard of this scam before it happened to me.
Distinction - MOST police in Bali are actually from other places in INDONESIA, Java etc. They are different. Not gentle and kind like 99% of Balinese people...
My pet hates of Bali are - 1. The trash dumped randomly everywhere. 2. Cruelty to the dog / cats / monkeys and animals in general. 3. Everyone greats you with praying hands yet people are constantly trying to rip you off. 4. Taxis drivers constantly begging to take me somewhere. 5. Almost every supermarket short changers you when giving you change, this is so annoying on principle. 6. Card skimming at ATMS 7. Shocking quality of cheese / dairy products in short supply at supermarkets. 8. Bad walkways/ pavements. 9. Mosquitoes. 10 Humidity.
I'm about to move to Bali. Once the Cov is over, I'll buy a scooter ..so excited. Maybe I'll try to help with trash disposal.. use glass jars.. composting
My daughter and her girlfriend wanted to go snorkeling, so booked it and the boys took them out and when they got there they said there's so much rubbish in the water so the girls got the boys and they cleaned up the rubbish in the water and yes they went snorkeling. When they got back I asked them did you have a lovely time, they had a great time and I could tell they felt good about their clean up haha. There's never much mentioned about Sanur but I really love it there, very relaxing but probably quiter then other areas but it's a great place to stay at, good food too, just lovely walking in the evening and have dinner, big choice right overlooking the water and lit up with lighting, just love Sanur. Handy to get a driver staying at the resorts and go sightseeing. I'd live there if I could but being Australian you have to come back to Australia every 6 weeks, just too much unfortunately. Have a great stay. It's really a Paradise.
Been there twice and love it completely. We had to invent something to complain about (to be good, North American tourists) so my husband and I agreed that in Bali the coffee cups are too small...
All spiders terrify me. I love bugs and geckoes though. When I was in Trinidad I saw a giant Katydid for the first time which was the coolest thing ever next to the bird sized moths and the millipedes which are super adorable.Mosquitoes and sand flies can fuck off though, they bite the shit out of me.
@@LukeLifeCharms Bro, next time if u are stepping out of your bike, at least bring your helmet with you, or lock it with your bike's seat because if not, people will easily steal your helmet. Trust me, I'm a local
There are good and bad things about everywhere. I really enjoy your videos. When I taught English to students in Indonesia online we'd have to cancel classes a lot because even rainstorms would take out the connection. I had plans to go to Indonesia in September, but maybe next year. Thank you for all the information!!!
The holes in the sidewalks are bad and can be quite deep. I almost stepped into one while there. If you do you could literally take the skin off your leg up to your thigh. Be sure to always look down while walking in Bali.
Jakarta's mini market now doesn't service plastic bag anymore. I, personally, do composting kitchen waste and reduce plastic waste. As indonesian, being care to the nature must be come by ourself first. Btw, Use lavender oil to avoid mosquitoes.
I loved this video! Haha so relatable. The first time I came to Bali, I was so freaked out about the bugs and geckos. Also, yes! Those holes are huge haha but regardless, Bali is still my favourite place in the world😍 I look forward to returning very soon!
I just stumbled upon your video! What a great personality you have. Your energy is fantastic! Thank you for distracting me from this pandemic! I appreciate your honesty and realness 💯
Visited Bali with the family in February just before the Covid19 outbreak and really loved Bali a lot! But I agree with you about all the garbage and plastic, specially on the beaches and in the sea, making you sad. Great to see that Bali is still open for tourism despite the pandemic. But I guess it’s less then it normally would be. Have a great time! Cheers from Sweden
Traffic is number one for me. Normally it's packed, to go 5km away can take awhile and your stuck in exhaust fumes. Don't even buy or rent a car there. He's 100% on the trash part, it bugs me what they do to the water ways.
Pretty sure the traffic depends where you live. Around where I live, I never have problems with it, only during super rainy days cause then people who are used to riding a motorbike switch to driving a car
I went on a school trip to Indonesia many years ago and we took a large bus through Bali, and onto a ship to Java. 2 weeks later when we returned to Bali, we had to take a massive long detour because we were told that a bridge we traveled on had since collapsed in the 2 weeks since our bus crossed it!! So we missed out on most of our days we were meant to spend in Bali before leaving. Java is totally different to Bali too, I stayed with a host family and they were amazing in their hospitality.
Omg I loved Poland toooooo! The people the food, the ease of transportation, cheap shopping, diversity oh man… but yeah Bali is definitely becoming my goal. I’m reluctant due to the rules about expat working
Well done my brother. Glad you are enjoying the paradise that is Bali. Being a Black Aussie I always find it interesting to hear what African Americans think of the biggest o/s holiday destination for Australians. Good on you for maintaining an open mind and having a holistic view of the place. I’m also Hindu so it’s always frustrating when you hear criticism about an Island that is more complexed than what many Australians think of Bali and particularly how they consider it to be an extension of Australia. Best wishes and keep the great videos coming.
During my 8 year stay in SE Asia (Malaysia, Thailand), I visited Bali and Lombock 4 times on my visa runs. I love Bali. I'm not so high on Lombock though because the people aren't as open there. Have your visited Lombock yet? Also, my favorite country, city-state is Singapore. I would kill to live there! It is truly modern and beautiful although it is very expensive to live. If you haven't yet, please add Singapore to your itinerary.
Even when you live in paradise, you still have to decide what to eat and when to clean your home. You have to decide when and where to do laundry. There are boring but necessary tasks in everyone's life.
That's the harsh fact... garbage they don't have waste management system on the island.!!! I stayed a wonderful month with my family but I wouldn't live there. The government should really consider development of the infrastructure and find a solution to treat the waste otherwise Bali won't be that attractive travel destination which would affect its economy.
My suggest for wifi, you could buy mobile modem. Or buy a cheap sa**s**ng phone just for use it hotspot. It seems XL provider have good strenght signal there
Ikr, and the most important thing is make a friend with natives. It will help you a lot with cheap & fast internet, how to avoid scammer, good place to visit, etc
The way I was told when in Bali, the locals weren’t used to packaging, they used banana leaves to wrap things up (and they still do, as a matter of fact) and once they unwrap items they would simply dispose the banana leaves... unfortunately, that’s what they do to plastic packaging
Bro, the 3rd reason you not liking Bali is irrelevant. Even here in United States we have mosquitoes. Common ! It's everywhere. People trash here too. You know that whether it is in a park, beach or even highways. I have been to Bali. I love the peace, unity and best of all is their humble and helpful personalities. I have no complain except for ONE. The walkways are so tiny. It is so hard to push a stroller or even a handicap person in a wheelchair to go through esp with steps . Same thing in Malaysia and Singapore. SAD !! Nothing for handicaps or tailored to help them to commute and travel.
@lukelifecharms you are living there in a great period during covid. No tourists or traffic. Both of those are number 1 on things to not like about Bali.
I like your channel very much, I'm from Poland. I travelled around all Europe and last year Thailand which i like the most of all I have seen. It is so nice to hear what you said you love Bali as much as Poland or Malta. You made my day!
So informative. Thank you for all your shares. Im looking to move there soon from the US. Not sure all the details so your guidence has been most helpful. So grateful for you
You're probably younger, so you didn't live through people throwing trash out their window on US highways. Lady Bird Johnson came along with a campaign, and the government leveled penalties. And now our highways are clean. That's all it takes. A public campaign by someone well known, and fines. (The Highway Beautification Act was informally known as "Lady Bird's Bill.")
Hahaha. If you think you can compare a 3rd world country to yours, you are dead wrong. People could care less. They live day by day, your first world country solutions have no meaning.
It’s only when you travel to other places in Indonesia like Jakarta that you’ll realize how advanced and civilized Bali. You’ll see it for yourself, there’s just too many garbage around in the cities :(
Absolutely agree with you bro, i was travel around indonesia, no one city clean like bali, there's many trash on the street and sidewalk, but in bali i think more cleanest then other city in indonesia

Love me some Ubud! The wifi is no bueno though. 🌴🐒 Indonesia will forever have my heart ♥️. My hubby and I are planning a big move from California and Bali is at the top of our list. 🥰
I agree Luke. I found the sanitation system lacking. Also, I had a problem with the stairs! They were not even, too steep (in some locations) and/or they didn't have handrails. Notwithstading, I truly love Bali. I'll return soon. Thanks for pointing these things out. Like you said there is no perfect place or human.
Congratulations on making a great video about Bali where you were able to eloquently and kindly voice your opinions about things you don't like without saying anything negative or offensive about the people and the culture! I really enjoyed this video. Truth on all fronts and a great message at the end.
I live in Bali and yes agree with what you were saying... But, i also travelled the world, which i also found all these things in Spain, France, Italy, especially when it is a touristy place. So, we - each of us who live and visit Bali or to other places in the world, clean as you go, please !
I love the way you always greet people while walking😊Couldn’t agree more about plastic issue. We should stop using wrapped plastic candies or cookies in our daily offering, only use traditional cakes without plastics.
Unfortunately the trash problem is nearly everywhere. I live in the Netherlands, and there are plenty of places you can go and be surprised to see trash... even out in nature. You can walk down the street, admittedly particularly in lower socioeconomic areas, and observe people throwing wrappers and even cans/bottles on the ground.
Great video! Garbage, poor wifi and bugs I think are pretty common issues in any developing tropical country. Garbage collection and management is a first world issue. Seems like you are pretty chill and will adapt to your new surroundings accepting that things are different in Indonesia. Enjoy!!
I commented to a expat from the states thiswas in the 90s but i mentoin us as surfers and for the Indonesian people allowing us to share there waves before wet season we should have a clean up week good to see that it's starting to happen for all being on our planet one day if i run into you I'll shout a bintang cheers from Tassie
I love Bali but the dog situation is horrible, I always fed and gave them water, I get so mad when people ignore the fact that these dogs are suffering and it doesn't take much to show compassion towards an animal.
As a Balinese, most locals sees the way things are as normal, while people who have lived (not travel) in other countries will probably see the abnormalities. What's interesting is that most Balinese will think they are clean in comparison to other parts of Indonesia, especially when you compare the villages. I couldn't agree more with your videos, very informative for those never been to Bali.
Hey Luke, new to the channel but after having my Bali trip postponed this summer I have really enjoyed your videos seeing how things are over there. You have a great charisma and attitude. I think in response to your own video, a cool idea would be doing a trash pick up video, you could use to ride around and show a few of your favorite spots. I think the locals and viewers would appreciate and respect it, and would be a good response to this video as “being the change we wish to see”. Anyways, cheers man!
Please make Why I Don't Like Bali Part II and include these: 1. People burn trash and the smoke goes everywhere. 2. Roads are sometimes closed all of the sudden it creates traffic 3. People who drive motor bikes break traffic all the time
I lived in Sanur for a year. In the west we are hammered about plastic pollution but most of our plastic at least ends up in landfill the plastic that floats in Bali's waters comes from the main island of Indonesia. In Sanur where the taxis sat they would throw their plastic over a stone wall in to a wooded area. But here in the west we have garbage cans and local garbage pickup by the councils in Bali they don't, maybe they don't pay the taxes we do which is probably why it's so cheap to live there.
12:58 "I can't think of another place I'd rather be right now -- except maybe Poland, or Malta..." That was hilarious to me, for some reason. Tropical paradise _or_ some other places that people don't talk about very often.
you can buy a prepaid SIM card with 4G at every corner, much better than wi-fi and it's super cheap as well. And they'll even help you install & activate it.
1. You can't just talk about trash in overpopulated weird 3rd world country. Here's some facts : there are trucks running every morning to transfer a 5000 ton garbage to landfills AND BALI doesn't have a proper machine to process all of that. 2. Can't complaint it is what it is. 3. Ok this is hilarious maybe cockroach or spiders but mosquitoes?
Hey Luke I'm not sure how long you have been in Bali - but I think it may have changed over the last year. Yes, totally agree with the amount of rubbish. Have seen entire trees washed up on the beach and teams of people hauling it away. Each day they spend hours cleaning up the beach, only to find it in exactly the same state the following morning. There use to be way too many people hassling you to buy their wares either along the beach or outside stalls on the road. Indonesian food and Bintangs are lovely, but there is huge variations in prices across Circle-K stores.
about the internet connection, especially if you plan on staying for a while, you should buy a sim card and data package. It's not expensive. My package is like 20GB a month for about 7 dollar.
That is way less trash than in my city in the US. I live in Portland, OR and it is legitimately like a dump. There’s trash everywhere. PILES and even MOUNDS of trash on the sides of roads.
Man you've nailed it on the top 3. I was there last March and the trash is crazy but Bali is beautiful I just call it island life because most Island I've been to have some sort of trash problem. That being said I would still go back the food and ppl are amazing.
I can definitely attest to the plastics/trash situation in Bali. Loved it out there when I was volunteering and I was fairly environmentally conscious. I expected some trash because I did some research (it being a big tourist destination), but was definitely surprised.
Move to Sanur there were not that many bugs, we had mosquitoes in our hallway where the maids quarters (we didn't have a maid) were. Sanur is great because you can eat on the beach and not to eat at a hotel like you would in Kuta.
From South Texas with full geckos, I really like seeing other countries geckos. In the Phillipines and Vietnam there were some bigger geckos! I also love bugs. In Korea, their are survivors, and imports off the ships, and complete hatred of insects. But, bizarrely huge mogis (mosquitos), large mantises, and a myriad of non-bothersome bathroom flys are present. Compared to Texas, there are less insects (except mosquitos) in Korea. Sorry. Just fyi cuz I look at bugs when I travel.
Absolutely I agree w/ U. My daughter n her husbnd living in Bali...when I visit Bali...I also hate 3 things U mentioned: trash, dogs every where...& public toilet as well...mostly unclean & smell...😔
