Being a Gen 2 Vmax owner. The only thing I think the gen 2 could do better is the self cancelling turn signals and get a computer to start the engine on the first or second crank. That is just the worst when you have a super long crank to start. The computer system on this bike is made by denso (Toyota). Other then that the bike is near perfect. Have no regrets on riding my gen 1 or gen 2 Vmax!
@Winkkin
@Winkkin 3 года назад
You pose a good point! As the owner of a Gen 1, I think the Gen 2 is a significantly different bike. You almost need to own both versions!!
@littleshopofelectrons4014
@littleshopofelectrons4014 3 года назад
Two other points. I would like to have cruise control to give my right hand an occasional rest. Yamaha could have included cruise control at practically no cost. The wheel speed sensors are already there because of the ABS brakes. The throttle-by-wire is already there. The computer is already there. The only thing lacking is a couple of buttons on the handlebars and software. I'm not sure Yamaha could have put a bigger fuel tank down there and meet government crash standards. I've seen some of the after-market tank installations. They expand the tank into every nook and cranny, into the side covers, and even right up against the rear fender.
@KareemHadee
@KareemHadee 3 года назад
I installed a 21+ liter tank in every vmax I have owned. Both first gen & my 2nd gen bikes and it really changed how I rode the bikes. I also added forward pegs on my 09 max and a custom seat along with ISO grips. I swapped out the exhaust and had a "nash flash" done to remap the ecu to new exhaust system. Adding a custom exhaust system easily removes 60lbs of weight making the bike lighter and improving handling. A lot of the design changes on the new Vmax don't make a whole lot of sense. In a lot of ways they just keep up with the looks of the first gen bike. I wish the system status was enabled by default when you start the bike. I also wish you could customize the startup message to be something more personal other than "Time to ride this V-max".

The 1700 VMAX is a fabulous bike in many respects. From sheer build quality, uniqueness, presence, cache .... the list could go on. If I could change anything major though it would be to lose a good 50kg (100 pounds) in weight and put in a larger fuel tank befitting that amazing 1700cc gas guzzling engine. Minor things would be sensibly positioned pillion footpegs and incorporate the gear indicator into the speedometer. I supposed you could say it’s brilliantly flawed, but it’s still brilliant!
@JeffMarcum

I agree with what you said about the rear foot pegs: they are not comfortable at all. I'm glad I don't ride back there. 😂

@@JeffMarcum My rule of thumb on the MAX,,NO RIDERS allowed,,except I did take my daughter for a ride,,once. :)
@Jay_Hall
@Jay_Hall 3 года назад
Nice honest video Jeff. I appreciate that. I was one of the people that YAMA came to visit to inquire about what we wanted in the Gen 2,,and I was somewhat shocked when I saw the unveiling, and I just did not want to pull the trigger to buy one. The 05 is the greatest cycle I have ever owned or ridden, and I really wanted and expected a rework of that legend, and I have written several times of what I wanted to see. Today Yama has two machines I like,, the FJR and the MT10, and if they ever bring the MT10 SP to the USA I might have to buy it. The MT10 with the Moore Mafia Flash and a pipe, for a $660 investment, give's 158 HP RW and 79 Torque RW in a mid 400 + pound machine, close to perfection in the SP model. Both rocking the R1 motor in a naked upright machine. :)
@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 года назад
Thanks Jay. I also like the FJR and am considering it as a third bike in a couple of years. However, it is currently behind the 2021 BMW R1250 RT in both looks and technology as far as I'm concerned. Yamaha hasn't upgraded the FJR in a while and that display looks like it came from 1991. 🤣 If Yamaha adds some color choices and a TFT display, I'll give it another look.
@Jay_Hall
@Jay_Hall 3 года назад
@@JeffMarcum Yes Jeff, Yama is very slow to make upgrades, and at times one must wonder what is wrong with their marketing, etc. For instance the MT10 SP is not even offered in the USA, at present, but I am told it may be in 2022. I also think the FJR days are numbered but that 1300 engine could be put to use in another platform, juiced way up and be the new MAX, but I think emission regulations will kill all performance bikes in the very near future. I will take a closer look at the BMW, problem is there are no dealers within 150 miles of me. :)
@Jay_Hall
@Jay_Hall 3 года назад
@@JeffMarcum Jeff, I checked out the BMW and the Base Gold Wing,,the Base Wing is so bad AZZ I would consider no other if I wanted a touring machine!! :) However, if I did not want a machine so heavy and so expensive I would still go FJR, even if the display is not a TFT. But I am not interested in touring, that is why I have the 5x8, and I would most likely go MT10 SP for my next machine. :) BTW, the FJR still has the center stand :)
@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 года назад
@@Jay_Hall Hey Jay, The VMAX is the ultimate one-up short distance bike, while the Gold Wing Tour is the ultimate two-up long distance bike. After getting the Gold Wing, I will have both extremes covered. However, I want a sport tourer as something in between as a one-up medium/long distance bike. As for the BMW R1250 RT, I am a bit intrigued by its boxer and would like to give it a try. Each bike will offer a different riding experience, so I shouldn't get bored. 😎 The Beamer also has a center stand, is lighter than the FJR, and sits almost two inches lower than the FJR. Therefore, it's just a better fit for me...considering my size. Oddly enough, both the Beamer and the Gold Wing sit lower than the VMAX.
@Jay_Hall
@Jay_Hall 3 года назад
@@JeffMarcum Jeff, I believe the engine design on the Wing and BMW account for the lower seat height. I guess the real truth will come when you ride them both and do a comparison,I would love to see your response to those test rides. :) In Europe YAMA offers a lower seat for the MAX.

Would you have a center stand on a large Harley/heavy cruiser? That part was nit picking... I agree with the fuel tank. I had a Yamaha MT-01 and had the same small tank and low range; so same issue. The instrument panel is more linking it to the old V-Max more than practicality, so "heritage" more than function. Maybe there will be a company that could be able to create a TFT screen for it one day ;P. And yes, I agree, you don't want to look down the whole time to the screen, but the speedo is much better placed and you will watch that more of the time anyway. And again, yes it is a performance cruiser, not a sports bike for the suspension setup. You change it one time and will mostly keep it that way. The panel for the fuse box is also just nit picking. How many key panels will you need just to make your once in a while electrical trouble shooting "easier?" All in all I only agree with the fuel tank that may be too small. The rest is just nit picking really.

@bzen5917
@bzen5917 3 года назад
Another solution for the Center Stand is having a front tire chock. There are some good ones that accommodates the whole front tire to be flush to the ground which is better than putting the bike on rear stands as it won't give "false" reading by having rear slightly raised...but that's a $$ solution...

Self-cancelling turn signals? Yes they could have easily done that. My 2005 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe has them (also the Royal Star Ventures). Oil sight glass? Yep same on my bike. Why not at least make the marks usable when on the factory side stand? Or why not a dipstick attached to the oil filler like most others? Oh well, nothing is perfect. Although I would have loved to have seen them put the 1700 V4 from the V-Max into the new Venture TC and Eluder instead of the 1900 air-cooled.

lol.The oil doesn't register until the bike is almost vertical.Dipstick wouldn't work.Nor a redesigned eye port.Guess ya need to do it the ol fashioned way.Balance the bike at the vertical while checking the sightglass.Either that or place a wood block under the kickstand to bring it almost to vertical.If you've put the correct amount in,then it should always read that in the glass.Remember the mark it's at,and go by that I guess.It IS a cumbersome beast.4 gallon tank?Geez.No thanks.

The Vmax is the king of road. Across all categories. It's simply in a category of its own. I wouldn't even call it a cruiser. It is the Darth Vader of all bikes. I don't think any of the reasons stated in this video are serious enough not to buy this bike. And coming from one of your previous videos regarding the color theme please allow me to say that the black on black in simply epic. Not to mention very rare. So it carries additional value. The only thing that I would change on this bike is that rear tire. It affects the ergonomics and the bike simply will not turn. Not to mention impossible to maneuver around when stopped. I understand it needs the flat curve to simply hold the bike upright but its such a drawback. It is the only reason I decided to buy the Diavel 1260s over the Vmax although I was struggling for a very long time to make a decision. But the Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3 although being a 240 rear tire along with the almost excellent ergonomics of the Diavel 1260s make it so much easier to maneuver. It is very sad as I really loved to have the vmax in my garage although it is getting near impossible to find a new one anymore. Perhaps one day I can get the 2020 model second hand.

@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 года назад
I have never bought a used bike, so I don't have much to offer. However, I will say that 5800 miles is really low for a bike that age. Now that production has ceased, there is now a finite number of VMAXs available. In case the owner isn't aware of this fact, don't let him know...the price may go up. 🤐

Take care Jeff🏍

I would add an aftermarket center stand if it were available. I know what you mean about the coolant level. It is hard to see the fluid in the container...it takes the perfect amount of light. A flashlight doesn't help either. I think the reservoir needs to be clear rather than white.

Do you find that your V-Max was a better choice than other bikes such as the rocket 3, or the diavel. Do you miss items at the others offer like heated grips, USB power port, updated electronics that connect to Bluetooth. Just wondering, I've always loved the VMax and looking for a new bike and considering it. But it seems like the more I research, the more options the vmax doesn't have.
@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 года назад
I didn't consider those bikes because there were no dealers near me and I was considered about future service and maintenance issues. Now that I have a trailer that opens up more options during future bike purchases. You are correct, the VMAX has none of today's technology, but I bought it knowing I wouldn't be riding it on long distance trips. I will be getting other bikes in the future for that (Gold Wing, BMW R1250 RT).

Do you have this problem too? Thanks and I think the blacked out version is absolutely beautiful! I blacked out some of mine and was thinking about wrapping it satin black? Any suggestions?!
@JeffMarcum
@JeffMarcum 3 года назад
I know what you mean about the foot pegs. When I was shopping for bikes last year, some got in the way. However, for me, maybe because I'm short, I can put my legs down behind the VMAX foot pegs without interference. As for color, when I was considering changing the color on mine, I was going to swap the fenders and top cover with 2017 VMAX fenders and top cover (red) rather than wrap it.

You hit all my dislikes spot on. But there's one more. When you get around to changing the tires the damn back tire won't fit past the anti rotation hub for the back caliper. You have to remove that to or it won't go past it. Its about 1/4" too long. To remove it you have to use a long extension going through the wheel and the thing is on there!!
