What I Don't Miss About Vinyl 

Started buying CD's 30 years ago. It's digital quality, got artwork, and it's compact. What's not to love? Still love this format.

I was born in the mid 60's. I disliked vinyl because , the added noise (snap , crackle and pop) hampered my sonic enjoyment/experience. The occasional skips sucked hard! I would buy the record , clean it , and then record it to a high quality chrome tape cassette. Cassettes were portable and better yet , easier for us guitar players to rewind parts over and over to learn. Yes , we had to learn music by ear back then. I was so happy when CDs came out around '83. No more distracting noises and better at constant rewind spots. Back then the CD cost $20 and the album was $12. Concert tickets in the mid 80's , for all major bands , cost $12 to $15. I'm just an older guy reminiscing.

For me, I collect vinyl for albums that I happen to love the most. I have the "Sacred 75" list. 75 records that I'm getting on vinyl as a means of showing my adoration for them. But I'd buy most every other album I like on CD.

I’ve always preferred cds. They’re cheaper and more convenient.

Beautifully said. I think we all love the idea of vinyl but they’re just not as practical as CD’s. I down sized my vinyl collection several years ago and I still don’t regret it. Just like you, I kept all of my favorites and got rid of the ones I almost never listened to. I also primarily focus on expanding my CD collection and every once and a while I may come across a vinyl record I really want but for the most part it’s just CD’s now. Same thing happened with me, I got tired of maintaining vinyl and putting up with the current inconsistency with price. CDs feel easier to look after, are easier to put on and play, are easier to keep in decent condition and I prefer the flexibility of how unique you can make a cd case look and how detailed the layout and art can be. I also love looking through the booklets while I listen.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. One of the first things people usually ask me when they find out if I'm a metalhead is "Do you collect Vinyl?" I just tell everyone that I prefer CD's because they are smaller, take up less space and are usually a third of the price. My wife and I just moved to our new house last week and I was able to condense my 300+ CD collection into just 3 small boxes; not that hard to move. I'm definitely a quality over quantity guy so I try to keep everything I collect whether its metal, movies, comics or video games down to favorites or just stuff I really enjoy. Basically, I'm believe in the phrase "All killer, no filler." Most of my "filler" has been traded off to McKay's whenever I get down there (I'm in VA). If I ever randomly see you there, I will try to say hi.

I haven't listened to a vinyl record in such a long time, although I do have a small collection. CD is my go-to format and always has been. Lately I've been transferring my CD collection to my computer via FLAC. That comes in handy with my new car which has USB components. My entire CD collection, plus what I've bought from places like Bandcamp, fits on something smaller than my phone. All of the points you made in this video I fully agree with. For me, less is best. The stress with owning and caring for records is absolutely horrible. However, I did buy one deathrock record the other day but only because the music isn't available anywhere else. Anyway, great video as always. The slight comedic bits are hilarious.

Yay!!! Finally someone being honest about all the problems with vinyl. Like yourself , I agree sometimes the sound quality is far superior, by is it worth all the other problems that come with it? For me, no. I still collect a small amount of vinyl for my favorite artists but as someone who owns over a thousand CDs , there's no way I could afford or find space for a similar amount of vinyl.

Many good points. I did the same thing 20 yrs ago, only realizing i like the sound of vinyl too much, and my and preference switched back. I still have a hefty CD collection but at one time it was closer to 1000, due to so many trades with other bands etc...eventually realizing i had too many cds i barely listen to, so i sold a bunch, cutting it closer to in half. My LP collection swelled in non metal areas more since then. Of course now theyve gone up in price so much i can rarely afford the ones id like most. Represses help but smtmes theyre expensive too. My last buy was a RP of Ride The Lightning, and Number of the Beast, that i realized after was a remaster. Now i gotta listen to the latter to see if i want to keep it, as i too am leery of remasters. The 2021 Iron Maiden s/t press sounds really good. The 2014 press. maybe not as much. I see you pay attn to these things too, so im always open to hearing your thoughts on remasters. I thought the Deicide-Deicide one sounded surprisingly good. The Entombed Clandestine remaster i hated...made me clutch my old original copies tighter lol.

Growing up in the 90s CDs was the format for me and still is having 1000s of em now and loving my collection they are just ssuperior too vinyls in every way for me smaller cheaper beter sound more music and so on =)

These points are pretty true. I love records! But I’m only getting records where I love the music. I don’t want over 100 because it seems like to much. Records just make me so happy and proud to own them, and I love my collection so far. I love to listen to them when doing school work, especially during quarantine and for different emotions. But ya the costs can be annoying and mailed ones can be pretty annoying too. CDs are pretty cool too, I basically grew up with them. I even have a pink CD player lol from when I was 7 years old.

I play my vinyls pretty frequently, but as my collection got bigger I started to limit purchases to absolute favorite albums. I listen to many genres from metal to IDM, so my hope is that I have a relatively broad selection for each, for whatever mood or scenario. As a guy who collected comic books his whole life, I've found that vinyl is a more sound investment in terms of resale later on.

At this point in my life I’m fine with just listening to music by streaming. My main source of jamming music is still my I-POD video from 2005. Have like 5,000 songs I ripped from CDs. Sold off most of my CDs. Have probably 50 left. Along with 50 records and a few tapes. Loved the Stormcrow 7” inch split! That band is so sick. I have their split with Sanctum!

Good points presented, that's why I try to mostly buy records that I really love and plan to listen to tons. Unless I find a super good deal for a record out in the wild.

Your points are pretty much spot on! I love vinyl ever since I was a kid, and still love the ceremony of listening to them, but yeah, some of the new releases are pretty underwhelming in both sound and pressing quality, and most of them don't even have an insert, let alone a proper booklet, which I miss. Yes, the main artwork is larger than in a CD, but a CD booklet is sometimes more interesting than a simple gatefold LP, especially the mediabook editions.

Missed you, Tony The artwork on Helloween's new lp ( Helloween ) is Amazing ! I've had the heat problem as well Lps were a headache...but 78s were a pain in the ass ! A stack of 78s is f***in' heavy! Because they were made of shellack, they were susceptible to chipping and breakage when they weren't stored properly ( replaced in the cardboard sleeves after being played)

I defense of vinyl 1. Remastered recordings on vinyl usually sound much better than remastered CD's 2. Original used non-remastered CD's can be as much as vinyl 3. Dynamic range is better, which can make a huge difference 4. It's a more intimate listening experience 5. The experience of holding a record in your hands, spinning it, and looking at the artwork is sometimes worth the $ especially if it's your favorite album. 6. Used vinyl can be as much as a used CD, sometimes even cheaper. I agree with the negatives of collecting vinyl, which is why I do both.

i usually only buy about 2 or 3 vinyls on any given day unless i find some used ones for $5 at a flea market and thrift stores when I'm in the neighborhood, of course i usually have a consultant (usually a friend who has enough vinyls to accredit it) and i always do premature checking if possible when i come across used vinyl, i also collected CDs when i was younger and getting back into it was troubling at first but i always make sure i keep them in usable condition with zero skipping and zero damage. of course all the points you discussed were very spot on and i honestly feel like i have neglected some of those storage space points because i used to lay the vinyls down horizontally in a drawer due to the size. thanks for this video and all the info you have given me.

As a younger collector, just like you, I love collecting vinyl. I started out with CDs in 2012 and switched to vinyl in 2016, right now I have over 540 records. Some things you list as downsides, I actually like. Those little things add to the experience, and are no inconviences to me. Though, when you said "moving" I had to laugh, that is a process I am not looking forward to in the future, haha. But hey, everyone his own right? I like that you do your own thing and enjoy it, so cheers to that. I like hunting for rarities and special items, some only ever released on vinyl! I have a metal collection channel of my own, if you ever wanna visit. Fan greetings from The Netherlands man. 🤘

Very good points. I love vinyl because of the jumbo sized album art and for the feeling of possessing something material in this increasingly digital world. But I am not rich so it is a pain.

I pretty much gave up on vinyl. I was a kid and a teen in the age of CDs so my cd collection was already pretty big before starting with vinyl. Some records you try to be extra careful with and it can be a pain putting the record in and taking it out of the sleeve, the cleaning, the space it takes up. The artwork is cool and I, just like you, found myself just looking at the vinyl but only playing the cd version. I’ve gotten a number of brand new albums that were warped or the sleeve was split.

I collect cds just for the convenience. They take up less storage space and cds are cheaper. Yes, vinyl sounds better but I can't keep a record player or records downstairs with me so it would be a pain in the ass to have to go upstairs to listen to them. Plus I don't have ac or a heat source in the winter there.

I like collecting vinyl since I like the skips and fuzz noises of old vinyl, sometimes finding different colored vinyl gives me a bit of excitement oddly (like my Scream Bloody Gore by Death splatter color vinyl). It's an expensive but oddly rewarding hobby for me when I finally get 'that one record' im looking for. Makes the ages it took to save up and find it worth it.

I love compact discs. I couldn't wait to get the hell out of fragile ass vinyl.

As someone who listens to vinyl, I do agree that it can be annoying having to clean a record almost every time before you play it. It's also kind of a pain getting a record in/out of the jacket, or just carrying it in general, considering how bulky and sensitive it is.

I still want vinyl for the art work!

I think the same as Killbot about vinyl. I keep a few special editions and Box Sets. I get tired of overpriced items, damage on jackets, space storage, clean them everytime I played them, the quality control issues. Ugghhh annoying as hell, like taking care of cassettes or babies!!!. I sold 100 records to get a big load of original and limited edition CD pressings at very good prices. Also I sold the crates I used to storage the vinyls and get more money to buy more CD's and other stuff, don't worry about space. I'm happy with my desision? Yes.

Good point. I only buy physical audio media on vinyl. Over the last few years I've amassed around 100 albums. Storage is a real problem. I have a display cabinet full. A stack up right that leans against the turn table display and two heavy duty fabric shipping bags full. I haven't had any delivery horror stories yet because I get them delivered to my mother in law, who is home 90% of the time. However one of my biggest gripes is bad paper sleeves. I've returned multiple albums because of noise artifacts and the like I can't get out without spending more to get the album cleaned by a professional. Especially here in Australia were a single LP album can run you $60 or more. If I'm paying premium prices I expect premium packaging from the manufacturer. Safe to say I always have vinyl and album sleeves ready

i hear ya on the moving with records part I have moved dozens of xs with 1-2k pieces of cherished vinyl Most cumbersome was a 4 plus day drive, in a van, from Ontario to Vancouver, once there I had to stay at a mate's place till I found my own flat. He was kind and trustworthy, not everyone will have that luxury. Then came my move from his to my new pad, then i would eventually move back to Ontario....It was physically and mentally exhausting A few years ago I suffered the final vinyl robbery i could handle(3 plus one locker flood when my e mother in law put my LPS in a locker when we made another move to Vancouver.) The last one broke my will,I don't have enough time in life left to rebuild that giant collection

I had thought about collecting CDs again, but in my opinion the only major reason to go The CD route is a financial one. To me everything else is much more interesting on vinyl. I compared one of the Sabbath CD and vinyl sets recently, and they just didn’t compare honestly. I do however usually only buy the records I’m into.

CD's have one thing over vinyl besides noise and that is, they do not lose sound quality as the stylus gets closer to the centre.

Vinyl has gotten a lot more expensive over the past 20 years with more reissues and more people buying has jacked up prices imo because I been buying off and on forever. You pointed out lots of things that annoy me for sure a damaged spine is for, I miss cassette tapes

Good points - but you forgot to mention that the coating of a cd will dissolve within three to four decades. I'm 54 now and - not all - but some of the cds I bought in the early eighties won't play anymore - although I stored them with great care. A record might get scratches over the years but you can still play it in 50 years. It also has a much higher increase in value.

I agree i stopped buying vinyl years ago. I'm focusing now on selling them off so i can use that cash to complete my collection of my favorite bands on CD. From here on i'm limiting purchases, collecting only CD's of artists i truly care for, the rest i'll enjoy online.

I grew up on vinyl, 70s and 80s. When I got my driver's license vinyl was out and I switched to tapes and eventually CDs. Really never looked back. Although I kept all the KISS records

it's a shame that over compression and no-noise filters have given cd's a bad name they do not deserve... the cd medium is the best audio medium ! sadly the mastering ( specially by the big record companies!) is not!

I started getting into collecting cassettes as well as vinyl after opening a Discogs Account. CDs since 1993!! I have more cassettes now than when I was a kid. As for vinyl I feel it's paid off. Right now I've been out of a job since November of last year so I want to get a job as soon as I can so I can continue getting more shit on physical format.

I stopped collecting Vinyls about two years ago. I miss the sound quality but CD's are so much easier as they're cheeper, you can play them in the car and they take up much less space.

I only buy vinyl for artists I LOVE other than that, CD is my favorite format and the most I have.

I sometimes prefer vinyl because some of the later so called "digital remaster" ruins the dynamic range of the sound or have a very sharp mixing (Judas Priest's 70s output for example)

Another cool thing about CD's....I collect a lot of rare, old school metal that never got properly reissued (Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You, Necrony - Pathological Performances, Monstrosity - Imperial Doom, Afflicted - Prodigal Sun, etc.) and I'm ***terrified*** of them getting fucked up. It's damn convenient to be able to rip it, and print a CD-R copy for playing in less "controlled environments" like the car, which sounds virtually identical at least to my fuckin ears. Plus, I'm 27....CD's are what I grew up with and what I have the most nostalgia for. I do collect vinyl too, but only "in person" at a record show/store, that's my "mantra" and makes it a bit more special.

I had the hardest of time moving since I have thousands of records, those boxes were so heavy and annoying, unbelievable. Anyways there are some collectibles CDS that very expensive.

I still buy records, but online I would much rather buy CDs or a new release if the CD is cheaper

I keep a turntable because I actually like easy listening and lounge music, and that stuff is still dirt cheap used. New vinyl, though, is a sucker's game.

I collect both, but only my favorite stuff AND music I think is more suitable on LP. I think its more fun to listen to Rick James on LP than a compact disc. What I like about LPs? The cover, the disc and watching to spin. It forces me to listen to the entire album versus skipping all over the place and scanning songs for certain parts. Once I put one on I play from beginning to end. HOWEVER, LPs do not sound better than CDs. Sure you might find this release that sounds better and so on but I am hard pressed to find any really difference in sound quality of a similar pressing CD/LP. I play Metallica's Justice album from original CD and LP and they sound for the most part exactly the same. Sure LPs add noise and somehow that sort of makes music sound thicker and less clear and is sort of a sound but its not better. The biggest complaint I have about LPs are that many of the tracks on the inside grooves become very distorted. Many do not notice but it can drive me crazy if its one of my favorite songs.

Agree on price but for example Ramones and other major artist CD's you can buy all kinds of crazy discounts like 5 euro from local mal. When you go to more specific underground genres you still have to pay 14-15 euro for CD which is much nearer the price of black vinyl from same record (16-19euro)

I have a primo sound system, but vinyl is fucking magic. Still have lots of CDs, but are recorded louder. Have a tube CD player so it also sounds fine.

Well as someone who's new to vinyl, the cleaning part is always confusing. I do not own or have any finance available to get that kind of cleaning thing. So I'm not sure how I'm supposed to clean the vinyl, unless there's another way maybe with paper or something.

I'm 38, and have never not bought CDs or downloaded Mp3s when I want music. I like the idea of vinyl, but records are a massive pain in the ass to manage properly.

Did you mention the constant turning over of albums? You can basically fit the entire album on one side of a CD. I literally have some CDs where on vinyl it's 3 records...that's a lot of having to get up to turn the record over.

That interesting because i am get rid of my cds to focus on vinyl for me i frocusing on colored vinyl or save up a lot for boxsets

I do dislike having to change records. I also dislike it when they skip and how easily records can be damaged. I too am pragmatic about records. I use mp3s. Sometimes records are the only way to hear a song. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (movie version) albums are notorious for not having 'The Sword of Damocles'. I managed to find a red vinyl album that has it! Raynor Burton's vocals are amazing (I had to look up his name). Well, that is if he was not dubbed. I generally do not go chasing after rare albums, etc. The one exception is that I really wanted Bolt Thrower's Realm of Chaos with the Rogue Trader cover. Well, it is just the record in a vinyl sleeve. I refuse to pay 100$ for that. I settled for the newer edition. I am hoping there is a re-release of Dethklok's first album on vinyl. Sadly, Realm of Chaos sounds soft or muffled. It needs to be turned up to hear all those fancy sound terms (which I am unfamiliar with). The album is clear yellow or orange. I know know clear or black are the best colors for sound qualitym
