Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but currently call Vietnam home. I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. @@titiritofo Agriculture is destroying the planet. It is very frustrating how much miss information there is on this topic. Grazing can actually sequester far more carbon than forests at a much, much faster rate. If we grazed animals on a large enough scale, we could actually mitigate all human emissions. Growing plants can not do this. Plant agriculture uses massive amounts of fossil fuels and unlike grazing cattle, it doesn't mitigate its own emissions. The soil microbiome is killed with chemicals and that dead soil is lost rapidly, causing complete land infertility and desertification. Grazing animals is the fastest way to replenish these lands, bring the microbes back, give nutrients back, rehydrate, break up impaction, and build soil faster than any other process. I have heart failure, and there were periods of time when I can't exercise due to hospitalizations. I was eating bad and not watching my portions and ballooned up to 320 lbs. A year and half ago, I used a lot of things Sonny mentioned in the video, from getting a food scale to paying close attention to my caloric intake. I found healthy foods that I enjoyed, cut my portions, and now, I am 240 pounds just from diet alone. Still got more weight to lose, but the advice in this video is useful. Lol Also, oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast is great. So filling. I also do lettuce wraps with either deli turkey or grilled chicken breasts. Started subbing out white rice for cauliflower rice to drastically reduce calories as well.

I lost over 18kg and everything you said in this is everything I did. I was always asked ‘how did you do it!’, and I would tell them and crickets. Most people don’t realise how little we know about the food we eat. It took me a long time to re-educate myself and once I did it was fun and easier to lose weight. It ain’t rocket science, but it does take motivation and consistency.

I was trying for years to lose fat. It was really hard. Intermittent fasting was one of the hardest things I tried to do in my life. You need so much mental strength to go through day while fasting. I am currently experimenting with diet from site Next Level Diet and it has been working perfectly so far.

Wow. Total opposite of my experience. Couldn't be easier so far. I did a week of 18/6 and now do 22/2 (more or less). Not even the slightest bit of struggle. I wonder what your carb and sugar intake was prior to starting IF. About 2 weeks before starting IF, I removed soda from my diet and started eating vegetables and salad consistently for the first time in 30ish years. Whatever works for you is the right diet though, so I'm not criticizing...I'm just shocked that our experiences contrast so sharply.

@@j.joseph5353 Same here, but I noticed that Mark said fasting was difficult mentally, which can be true. I guess because I am used to it, I don't have any physical problems fasting (never longer than 48 hours), but sometimes constant food ads on TV and social media make me want to eat. I normally eat about noon, doing omad several days per week. If I decide to fast on a particular day, I am usually okay once I have made it a few hours past noon. Sometimes, I do a 5:2 style dirty fast during which I will allow myself up to a 500-calorie meal on a fast day. OMAD or a small eating window is actually easier for me, because it is much easier for me to control my eating when I am not eating all day.

I’ve lost 95 lbs in 3 months span by doing “intermittent fasting”. Sadly, with a neck injury, nerve damages, I can’t exercise anymore. So It works for me, & I just eat once a day (whatever I want; just healthy portions), while replenishing my electrolytes fluids & water thru the day. No sugared items during that time. No need counting calories, no need to watch what I eat unless my Dr’s monthly blood check ups show otherwise if I need something more for my body. 🤗
@Tes7000
@Tes7000 Год назад
Wow, just wow! And here I am hoping to lose 95 pounds by the end of the year. I do omad quite often, but I still have to count my calories, because I like all the fattening stuff and can easily eat to maintenance in a short eating window. I recently came back to the 5:2 plan, which allows men up to 600 calories on a fast day. Sometimes I do a total fast, but if not, I might allow myself a light snack of a few hundred calories. 4-7-23

@@Tes7000 -it’s whatever works great for your DNA/Biology. Just remember, Fasting (& intermittent fasting), eats away your muscles & muscle tone and not your fat on your body. It always eats your muscle first as your fat layer is there for emergencies on the body and to bring protection Incase of blunt traumas on the body; naturally. But this only happens if you do not drink any fluids during both fasting and intermittent fasting. It is why I lost so much weight so quickly. How ever, my metabolism isn’t dead yet being age 47, it’s soon getting there fast lol…. Good Luck 👍 🤗🤗🤗

When I was 16 I was 300 pounds. I'm Vietnamese always been on the heavy side. I was so sad and depressed. What I did to go from 300 to 150 pounds with a rip 8 pack was the same as you. I counted every calorie I ate. I would always eat salads and in between eat fruits and begals sometimes. Everyday my intake calories was below 2000. But it's not just intake. For example let's say that day I took in exactly 2000 calories by the end of my 4 mile run and 400 sit ups I would use an app that calculate how many calories I lost. So sometimes that 2000 calories intake at the end of the day I was at like 100 or 200 or even at a negative. So I would watch what I eat and the calories intake and how much I lost with cardio work outs. I went from 300 pounds at 16 to 150 pounds at 17. I did it in less then 1 year. I'm about 5'9 for an Asian it's ok lol. But yeh I was so much happier when I was in shape. Now with a family and 3 kids I care for I don't have time for prepping my meals or workouts. So busy with life and family. That I'm now back to 180 so I'm still at a healthy weight. Just waiting for my kids to be less dependent on me then I can go back on my calorie count and workouts. I want my 8 pack back lol. So proud of you. Been watching for awhile now. You do what works best for you. Calories counting works.

This has been incredibly inspiring. I've struggled with weight since young and eventually, like my dad, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and just wanted to end everything at the ripe ol' age of 14-15 and to this day it's still a struggle but less positive attitude about it. (i.e a decade later, I'm a miserable fat adult who doesn't have the mental and emotional strength to do anything and would rather let nature run it's course). I found by working out I could use all that bottled rage as a means to slap myself upside the head and get into a gear one baby step at a time and as many times as I want to say NO to gym because I'm always tired, once I get there I feel extremely accomplished. I'm a little under 100lbs with plenty health conditions to boot, I won't get rid of them all entirely but I can beat them into submission one healthier pulse at a time. It's never too late to start treating yourself better so please, whenever you ever feel like stuffing your face (which is fine SOMETIMES) _use that fuel_ and start sweating, keep active. It doesn't have to be a lot and no one should be asking, it's your body. People like Sonny are a prime example of success! :)

Interesting. I had severe annorexia & bulimia when younger & stopped weighing myself years ago (I'm talking 12+ years - I go on how my clothes fit). Best decision I ever made. I love walking (around 8 - 10km per day, just for the love of it & anxiety management) & healthy eating but I eat a huge amount of veggies & fish. I love the odd bit of meat & a good cheat meal/day each week. I never binge though. Ever since I started viewing food as health & fuel, my life got better. Plus, I just love being active! In my 20s, I played 6 sports and was way OTT with my training, so walking & weights really suits me now, in my 40s. I hope you have a good balance in your life. I am one of few who has actually recovered from an eating disorder. Sometimes I eat a lot, the next day I eat less....but I just listen to my body and enjoy staying active. It does not rule my life anymore though & that is a great freedom. If I started counting calories & weighing food, I think I might be in danger of re-activating one of my eating disorders but as you said, it is just what works for you. Keep it up, as you look great & love how much you enjoy the food you eat.

Eggs cooked with lard or tallow even olive or avocado oil won’t harm you in fact it’s much better ingest mono saturated fats so you stay full longer and fast for more hours throughout the day. That’s when a person loose weight by fasting and no eating so frequently, doing the opposite is setting yourself up for insulina resistant and that’s a problem.

The issue that people end up having is sustainable. Eating oats, blueberries, and eggs are healthy, but long term, people will get sick of it and turn to old habits. Nutrition is about change and creating sustainable healthy eating habits. I like bread, so here is a go-to that keeps me full and still fulfills yummy food. I make my own whole wheat bread, so I control what goes in it. I microwave one egg with two pieces of roast beef on top for two minutes. I use my own honey mustard recipe on my bread, load up on veggie toppings, and have a quick, tasty sandwich. This is just one example of something sustainable for some people for 600 calories.

Meat doesn't put on weight. Carbohydrates in excess put on weight. Breads, pasta, sugars, etc., put on weight. You'll burn the protein in meat. You can eat all the meat you want if you don't eat carbs.

@@SeedOilFitnessOfficial most meats are class 1 and 2 carcinogens, its very very very hard to find any meat that is good for you. Most, even lean meats, are still chock-full of cholesterol and saturated and transfats. They may be 'lean' but are still ~ 40-60% fat. Same with the eggs, 1 egg pretty much puts you over your cholesterol limit for the day, 1 slice of turkey deli pretty much does the same but for transfats. not to mention if anyone thinks calories in calories out is real then they are eating all the bad foods. You can consume 3k-4k of the right foods and lose weight without exercise if you do the research. It's good that Sonny lost all that weight, it definitely helps his health, but those foods are artery-clogging/cancer-causing.

@@Ceramics_Coffee_Geckos Meat isn't carcinogenic. That's a disingenuous statement based off a flawed rabbit study. Almost every meat raised on it's natural diet is good for you, and contains a complete protein/amino acid/mineral profile. Every cell in your body is made from cholesterol and saturated animal fat. Trans fat are almost exclusively a man made product from vegetable oil. We must have a different definition of "lean". If you eat real food you shouldn't have any problems.

I like this guy. I try to understand him from the perspective of embodied cognition. The key point is: Sonny was chubby from very early on in life, reached 136 kg at his heaviest and has been struggling to maintain weight ever since; according to him, the food that best represents him is grilled cheese sandwich, which is also reviewed in the first episode ever of his show. These are clear indicators of a man who is naturally prone to high calorie food. Because he is maintaining his weight, he is not having as much calories as his body naturally desires. The missing calories must be killing him. That probably also drives him to do food reviews, to live where he travels and to travel where he eats. Many of the dishes in his show are not special to me, but somehow look more appealing than how I had remembered them. It is thanks to Sonny’s radiating joy in every one of the dishes. For example, oatmeal is the most boring thing you can eat; but for Sonny, it seems like something that can light up his day. It is not fair to criticize him for trying to be funny. Because, first, the entertainment show needs to be funny. Second, to a large extent Sonny does not try to be funny. Unlike other food reviews shows, Sonny lets people feel his strong passion. Rather than putting on the acting skills to just engage the viewers, he is finding his missing calories and doing a job along the way. In this case, being funny is less a technique than a playful sharing of his exuberance. Even for professional actors, good acting can only last for a few minutes at a time. I couldn’t pretend to enjoy the foods at a dinner party more than I actually enjoy them, even under the pressure that a compliment for the cook is expected. My body would be off at some point and then the fake enjoyment would be more or less unconvincing. Moreover, Sonny’s food reviews have good aesthetics. One should not forget the contributions from his editors and cameraman. But if my comments above are correct, the good aesthetics might as well be a result of his constant yearning for calories, a motivation to dig out the aesthetic value in foods which is easily overlooked by others.

Keto helped me A LOT (with exercise). Down 40lbs from 280lb in 37 days so far. Its not something you should stay on forever but when you cut sugars out specifically it helped me not be hungry as much. Too much sugars can cause Leptin resistance which Leptin is a chemical released to tell your brain that you are full basically. You'd be surprised how much sugar is in so many everyday foods unfortunately. So not only eating normal portions throught out the day with no hunger issues but also eating healthier. The beauty of Keto is it also educates you on what is high in calories and what isn't. Can't wait to start having fruits again in a few months.

I'll admit that I could not do this, but one thing that resonated with me was to eat what you like. This is something that I have not been able to do in a very, very long time as the kind of food that I love to eat is not available where I live. I grew up eating Caribbean, Spanish and Italian American food. While I embrace other cultures foods and enjoy it, the closest thing to loving it is Asian food as I'm part Asian. As a result, I started to eat sweets to compensate for what was lacking within. I thoroughly enjoy fruits and vegetables, so the issue is not there. And my family taught me to eat sensibly, e.g. no soda, little fast food, oil and vinegar dressings, and home cooked foods. They were also athletes, but the sports that I enjoy the most are all ocean based, which I have no access to. So I mainly stick to brisk walks, meditation, and light stretches, a far cry from swimming and playing ball in the ocean. Sometimes I feel like an indoor cat 🐈‍⬛.

rule 1 don't overeat. don't consume empty calories aka candy, bread, soda. vegetables fill the most, not right away but after a week of eating a lot of vegetables and cutting back on carbs i swear a handful of vegetables will fill you up rather quickly. fibers help make you stay full so a table spoon of psyllium husk daily works wonders. fibers expand in your body and give a false sense of fullness. you don't have to do Keto just eat vegetables and don't consume bleached flour, sugars, even fruit isn't that good tbh but don't worry about that one an apple or orange a day is fine. don't eat beans thinking those things are vegetables either. beans fall under the same super food category as potato's. not saying you can't eat potato's or beans either i am saying be careful not to overeat. look up what foods are carbs and then weigh 50-100grams of carbs pastas pototo's etc but don't go over 100grams daily. everything else is fair game. balance is key.

One suggestion on the mango smoothie/“nice cream” (ice cream but all fruit): make it with half fresh mango and half frozen mango and it’s much sweeter and you actually don’t need to add any sweeteners because all the sweetness comes from the double the amount of mangos plus you don’t need ice or even water. It’s just st 100% fruit, nothing else needed, no artificial stuff like xantham gum, artificial sweeteners. It’s way healthier, tastes great, is all natural 👍🏼and delicious. 😋 you can also do the same with 1/2 fresh berries and 1/2 frozen bananas, or the reverse, half fresh bananas and 1/ frozen. Pineapple is great, papaya, whatever fruit you like. I even made a peach smoothie/nice cream and it was delicious. I just use whatever fruit is in season and freeze it when I have too much ripe at once and it’s in the freezer in smaller containers ready to be used for a smoothie (nice cream they’re called, a more natural, healthier alternative to ice cream).
