CORRECTION: Do not use petroleum jelly as a lubricant. Here is the correct lubricant to use: amzn.to/2tX0U9v

you need to get silicon lubricant instead of petroleum jelly. this will solve your issue with replacing the ring so often.

I'm Jim the pool guy, yes only use recommend silicone base lube, second you need to get the two pvc notched gaskets for the the lid , one goes under the cap one on top before hold down nut. They have notch to fit only one way center bolt screws in till it stops!! Do not tighten center bolt!! This allows the o ring center to move up and down sloppy, install lid and turn it till it clicks in the notch on the side. Perfect install. Should last 5 year if lubed every month. Thanks for video.

Want to agree with many others that petroleum based lubricant is a no-no with rubber/synthetic rubber o-rings, etc. . ONLY use silicone lube. Hayward has a warning on the use of petroleum based lubricants. I appreciate the video was trying to be helpful, but having the camera much closer when disassembling/re-assembling the lid and cover for the o-ring replacement would be useful for those who have never done it before or mechanically inclined. Have never had any issues filling units completely and have been to many Hayward technical schools and never heard an instruction or suggestion to only fill halfway. Eventually, the o-ring is going to stretch, so I recommended when you get a replacement lid o-ring _ get 2 and keep one on hand for that time when the old one will not sit properly and you can't get the top to seal. 40+ yrs in pool/spa service business.

#1 use leslies pool and spa lube. #2 di not fill the chlorine canister all the way full. #3 half full is what most hayward service technicians suggest. #4 shut off chlorinator when you are shocking the pool

Thank you! What number should I set the dial to? And if I only fill it half way how often should I be refilling it? Thanks so much!!!!

After years of fighting to get the cover off, thus year I started using Pam cooking spray. I spray it on the inside cover threads as well as exterior threads. I still have to use a rubber mallet to take off and put on but nothing in comparison to before. Also, as a side benefit, I installed new o ring at start up and 2 months later the same o-ring is in place and working. I’ve probably jinxed myself now on that one.Give pam Spray a try. Made my Work a lot easier.

Just get yourself a tube of 100% silicone lube. Clean your o-ring and relive every few weeks. I never need a mallet or a tool to get the lid off; all by hand. My unit is 3 years old.

You appear to have swapped out the old, failing Buna-N/nitrile rubber o-ring for one made from Viton polymer. Viton is much more chemically resistant. You did get your $18 worth from Leslie after all.

Thanks but use Jack’s multilube instead of Vaseline. The gaskets will still need to be changed, but they last longer with Jack’s.

The same neighbor who installed the check valve on the incorrect port also overtightened the screw cover and damaged the O-rings. Both common mistakes detailed in the owners manual.

Replace the gasket and use Jack’s Multilube. Not petroleum jelly.

If the CL220 is left outdoors in freezing weather with just a little water left inside, that is where it usually cracks. Cracked units can be repaired by burying the crack around the disk with premium black epoxy (UV tolerant).

Do not use petroleum jelly. It will break the O-ring down. Use silicone grease instead.

$18.79 for a single non-OEM O-ring is actual highway robbery. I just bought a set of 8 on Amazon for $9.99.

Pro tip: If your o-ring is stretched (causing leaking and inability to screw lid on) and you're in a pinch, cut 1/8-1/4" off the o-ring and glue it back together with super glue

Ok. Big mistake. Petroleum based lubricants for orings not intended to be used in non petroleum based setting. Get the manufacturer specs.

I had a customer that used petroleum jelly and when he went to fill his chlorinator, he couldn't get it open. it had created a seal and could not get it open. Never use petroleum jelly. I am always tell people not to. But some just never listen.

Do i need a Chlorinator? Or can i just dump tablets in the skimmer?
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 6 лет назад
You can put a tablet in the skimmer, that’s fine. But it will dissolve quickly in the rushing water. A chlorinator is easier to regulate.
@ChrisBadman
@ChrisBadman 6 лет назад
I've been told by many a pool "expert", that it's only fine if you run the pump 24/7. Otherwise the chlorine tablets will cause the water to become very acidic as they sit. That water will them damage/wear anything it contacts including the skimmer basket itself, and the pump. I believe them, because I used to do it, and it did in fact wear the skimmer basket down. Chlorinator is the way to go 100%.
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 6 лет назад
True. Before I had a chlorinator, I would only put in one tablet at a time and it would dissolve in a couple of days.
@jimdavis9836
@jimdavis9836 6 лет назад
You can, in some cases, put chlorine tabs/sticks directly in the skimmer basket but as noted in other replies there are important considerations to consider. 1st - Only put tabs in the skimmer basket if skimmer body and basket are plastic (some older pools still have metal skimmers and/or baskets and the low pH environment the tabs create in the skimmer will erode the metal), as well as the suction piping running from the skimmer to the pump should only be rigid Schedule 40 PVC pipe, as metal at any point in the pipe will have the same chemical erosion due to the constant low Ph in the water at that point and if flex pvc is used, the tri-chloro causes a breakdown of the inner wall and it swells inwards significantly narrowing the inner diameter of the suction line (much like a narrowed artery) and can actually collapse due to the vacuum being pulled on it being a suction line. 2nd - If you use a timer, divide your pump run time into segments so that the off time with the tablets just sitting in the skimmer and creating an extreme micro chemical enviroment is shortened thereby reducing the levels. For example, instead of running the pump for 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off, make it 3 hrs on, 3 hrs off, 3 hrs on, etc. . You will also have a little cleaner pool due to the skimmer action being spread over a longer period of time and debris having less time to sink. 3rd - as mentioned you will get MUCH better control over the disolve rate of the chlorine allowing you to not waste chlorine and save money. (Also be sure to check your chlorine stabilizer level especially at the start of the season). You also don't have to deal with trying to pick the chlorine out of the basket every time you need to empty the skimmer basket or again possibly throwing some of it out and again costing money. My company provided pool service contracts for residential customers and when starting a contract with a new client, if their pool did not have a chlorinator on it, we provided and installed one as part of our service wherever possible for the reasons mentioned above. Me - 40 plus years in the pool service business

Oh Hayward chlorinators are such garbage. Their instructions are shit. I carefully analyzed the instructions and still managed to install the valves backwards. Damn thing leaks out of the top every other year. The hose just broke in half. My pool still gets too high chlorine even with chlorinator off... total shit.

There are other wearable parts on your chlorinator also. The ball check ouput valve should be replace every year or so. Also their are 2 small o-rings on the stem of the flow control valve. DIY's always have trouble with sophisticated equipment regarding there pools. There are decent books and courses available on line that'll prevent 90% of these types of problems. Hey,...while you're screwing around the kids are bummed out. Help your kids, hire a true professional. You'd be out on your boat instead of training to be a pool engineer! I heard several errors in this video alone!

Go easy on Dad, will ya?. He must've seen the sign at Leslie's hiring pool guys **free 3 week training ** and no experience necessary. Week 1) we don't fix anything. We only install new. 2) week 2 .Tell client Everything's broken. You need a new pump. New filter. New heater, New chlorinator etc 3) week 3: install all new equipment and walk away $$$ collect paycheck. Learn as you go on the client's time money and equipment. I don't blame this Dad. He doesn't have $10 000 to give to con artist pool guys.
