A Good amount of information from an older rider. To be honest, I didn't know if I would make it through your video but by golly, it was to the bone honest. This is what I think we all need to hear. I myself just recently retired at 67 and so close to 68. Had a small bout with that flu thing last winter that was just enough to put me back on track with my concerns for personal health. A fairly avid cyclist, now becoming a daily walker and sights set on rucking and trail running. So many avenues to choose from yet one thing is for sure, if one is not enjoying the outdoors on their own terms then one is not truly living. Just recently purchased a gravel bike as my old roadie was getting tired and thought, I'd like to do some off road riding more so than dealing with any amount of vehicles on the roads. This is leading down a rabbit hole, I hope, to have a greater respect for myself and the outdoors, once again. Born and raised in SE Alaska, always outside. I have been an athlete all my life, at least thought I was until now. It seems as we age all of those yesterday/years ambitions come full circle and we are left with what our bodies are actually capable of......Found truth as though looking into a mirror. Finding courage, foresight and fortitude will be the challenge. Growth through these endeavors while meeting and enjoying all of the folks along the way I will say would be the icing on the cake. It's not the challenge, it is of the journey. ....Thank you for taking the time to put things in one man's perspective that I am sure will give us all some food for thought. Much appreciated sir.
I agree completely with your point about enjoying the outdoors on your own terms. I enjoy hiking, cycling and would love to try trail running at some point. I hope the gravel bike works out for you. I imagine Alaska has some pretty impressive trails to explore. Maybe one day I'll visit. In fact, I will definitely see Alaska at some point. I think michaellane that we have to be attuned to what our bodies are actually capable of at any age. The difference, at our age (I'm also 67 ) is that it gets harder, i think, to distinguish between what are the actual physical limitations of our ageing bodies and the psychological limits we (and others) impose on bodies of our antiquity. I recently rode 3000 plus KMs to Alice Springs from South East Australia. More than 2000km of this was on very gnarly gravel, sandy or stony arid zone tracks. The key to completing this excursion (for me at least) was recognising when i needed to take a day or two(or three) out of the saddle to rest this aging body. And although i spent 46 nights in a tent, being able to rest my fossilising bones on a an ultralight air mat and sitting around my campfire on an ultralight chair made all the difference.
I love this comment for many reasons, mainly as it's reassuring to know that with the right mindset, and being aware of our limitations we can keep going and stay active. At 50 I'm reassured that I'm young and have plenty of time left. 👍 thanks.
Hey Mat, Re "Timing". The racers start the second week of June. I live in the mountain west, and feel June is early for a few reasons. Remaining snowpack in the high country; melting snowpack makes trails muddy; deeper creeks and runoff; plus the Forest Service and locals haven't had time to clear fallen trees from winter. Mid-July is a good time to start the Divide because you're farther north in Canada, temps are ok at night, plus you start off at altitude right away. Thanks again for your personal observations and humor. I rode half of the Divide, and went too lightweight for the areas south of Breckinridge, CO. Next attempt: small panniers and front/rear racks, full rigid drop-bar mountain bike, ability to carry more water and food. Happy trails!
I can't imagine how hard it is to race this route, especially so early in the year. I was very lucky with the weather even though I set off a little earlier than you recommend. I've added a front rack and bought some small front panniers so aside from the drop bars I'll be similar to your planned set up. I hope you get back out there soon. Mat, this is a very truthful honest video, I'm glad I had the time to watched. the best part is when you mention " is a privilege to do what you love to do" and you are 100% absolutely correct, for years I try to do something like that, unfortunate my line of work and were i work, time is a huge issue. I'm 65 now I wont give up my dream to do something like that, Ill will start AZ loop which is about 130+- miles. I thank you for your video it was very good, and I had no idea about the expenses, but like you said something's we can make changes and adjust, research and take the time to get it down pack. but the most important part is to enjoy while you can and healthy enough to do it. Life is short. we all know that. Thank you. PS: soon to retire... and is lot on bucket list! LOL

Questions for live stream: how difficult to get a campground spot? where was paved road traffic the worst? did you or when to lock your bike? any suggestions for gloves; my hands get cold easily? how big of a tarp would be sufficient to keep out of the rain? did your hands ever go numb? what kind of shoes did you wear? ever a problem getting chased by dogs?

@Mat I really enjoyed your trip video. It was brilliant, mate. I loved your effusive sense of gratitude and appreciation first and foremost. Your self-awareness and self-criticism about your tendency to rush and push too hard was an enlightening share, and tbh I have found myself thinking about that specific trip as needing 100 mile days because I saw others doing that. But your trip looked FAR more enjoyable! I also loved that you made friends along the way and included the merry band of nutters in your video! Now you've shared the costs and I really want to do it.

@matryderadventures I hope so. But...since I am married and I am the only income I can't take time off. I work as a contactor and don't get time off. So probably the closest I will ever get is to watch others do it. I'm 58 y.o. now and so time is running our for me.

I saw your other video of your epic ride in the Great Divide on two parts. I wanted to appreciate the video, so I saw most of the first hour at night and the remaining part of it the next morning and afternoon. This inspires me to do likewise but I’ve been interested in bike packing thought the U.K. and stay in a castle or a few. I love some of the geography and topography in the U.K.

I never include what you call resupply in to the cost of any trip I do. Whether I am sitting at home watching too much RU-vid or travelling I still will be eating enough food to at least keep me alive. Definitely do not eat out as much as you did but it sure is a sweet treat every now and then. Best burritos I had on the route were in Helena.
I've never thought of it that way. You're right though. You have to eat anyway. I definitely won't be eating out that much in future. I spent way too much. I can't remember where I ate in Helena. last year I rode the GDMBR but started in Deadhorse Alaska, used 80 days $31 avarage (did around 30% wildcamp 50% cheap campground and 20% expensive campground with showers/washing machines for some comfort and cleaning. 95% I cooked myself what reduces the cost a lot and because I had to be able to take 7 days of food because of Alaska I was able to buy cheap supplys ad the large suppermarkets. but then it made my bike bit heavy Next summer gona do from Vancover to baja divide and mexico divide on my way down south :) HF from the netherlands
That's the kind of daily figure I need to aim for. I've added more capacity so I can carry more food. Your trip for next summer sounds incredible. Cheers 👍
Thanx for your reflections on your tour and for offering a q&a livestream!🎉 In case I can’t attended: What was your worst/best decision on the tour? What item did you bring and never used (I don’t mean the spare belt, that we all hoped you would not use; I mean something you could use daily but just didn’t)? What item did you loose on the way? Longest (biggest) day on the bike? Most distance, riding time and elevation gain? Did you have cellular service? Costs on that? What are plans for the winter? Next summer? In ten years? Did you just send the raw videos? Or did you give Ross instructions?

In 2005 I bike-toured in the US for 50 days solo and another 25 with someone else. We spent a little over 10$ each per day on camping, food and miscellaneous. With modern prices that would still be less than 20$. But as you said, we had four panniers each and I only had to resuply once at a gas station. We were also young and camped out every night and had more free sites than paid ones. I also seemed to be broke so people sent a lot of trail magic, probably worth a couple of hundred dollars. I remember going through Utah, where I had to resuply at a gas station, buying the bare minimum to get me through to the next supermarket two days down the road. On the way to my designated camp spot a car stopped, handed me drinks and fruits and told me that they managed to get the last available campsite and invited me to stay with them and to eat with them, so I was able to add a well needed rest day without buying food, which would have been impossible anyway or paying for camping. When I will one day do the GDMBR and hopefully connecting to the Baya Divide I would probably be spending 50$ or more per day. Insurance, bikes, flights all add up to those costs.
I definitely spent too much. I like the $50 per day target. I think that is achievable for me in future too. It's amazing how kind people are on these trails. Your Utah story says it all, those experiences are the ones which stay with you. I hope you make it onto the GDMBR. The Baja Divide is definitely on my list too. Cheers 👍

I live in the Teton Valley and I can totally relate to your respect for grizzlies! We carry bear spray everywhere! Never underestimate how ornery a moose can be either! Great video! I would have chosen a 4" front suspension fork with a lock out. Your commentary on the cost is much appreciated! The Gates Pinion drive is a no brainer. Great job on your Great Divide Mtn biking trip.

Loved the series. In your last episode, "What I learned completing The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR)" you talked about the fear of Grizzly bears influencing your camping decisions. Beginning in Banff, were there other riders around that you rode or camped with so that you could ride with a group, at least temporarily? I would have loved to have your riding mates play a bigger role in your episodes. It wasn't until the end that we learned that John was from Ottawa and Bill from West Virginia (and I think Paolo was Italian). How much of an impact did they have on your enjoyment of your ride? Did you have some negative experiences with other riders that you kept your distance from on the GDMBR? Did your metal water bottles have a thermal liner to keep them cold? What brand were they or what brand to you recommend? Water seemed like a big thing from Wyoming south. What was the maximum amount of water you carried on any section? Thanks again, I'm hoping to do the GDMBR in 2025.

Thoroughly enjoyed all episodes of your GDMBR adventure Mat & appreciate your terrrific sense of humor & adventurous spirit! Kudo's on the awesome & entertaining job you've done through-out! So glad you met the other fellows along the way and enjoyed the wonderful camaraderie, friendships, & all the terrific memories as well. My biggest concern would be being on my own for 2,700 miles! I'm a retired 65 year old cyclist from Cary, NC who's been battling some hip ailments the past few years. May be getting a hip replacement in the not too distant future & hope that gets me back to the 10k miles I rode in 2019! I typically cycle about 5k - 6k miles a year but some home renovation projects have kept me quite a bit busier than I prefer this year. Thank you for this helpful video covering the trip costs and the analysis of what gear changes you're considering moving forward. I suspected you might benefit from a couple front panniers or fork packs as well so I was right about that part. That sporty black & white print shirt seemed to hold up quite well for you as well. Hey, being a chick magnet is never a bad thing at any age! Great job & keep on keeping on my friend!

Hi Matt, yes the expences for the tour was a little high, the airline tikets are high when not booked in advance. But overall the experience and comradary with friends is a lifetime memory and the good feelings you had from the trip and the scenery is the highest enjoyment isn't it? I am sure in future trips you have a good idea how to make it more affordable and still have a great experience. One definite good point is time, when you have the time to do all of this is a win win situation. We all live once and why not enjoying life to the fullest? The airline ticket for the return journey was very high. I should have booked earlier. I will next time. You're right, you can't put a price on experiences like these. I've really enjoyed watching all your videos on the GDMBR. I originally found you when searching for info in the Sonder Broken Road, and then I got hooked on your videos of the wider trip. That says alot! The verb "spend" is applicable to mainly two things, money and time. The dollar cost of the GDMBR is fairly trivial, whereas the cost in time borders on astronomical. For those of us who aren't retired, can't take a paid sabbatical, or aren't unemployed drifters, time is the most costly issue. And the problem to solve is how to find the time. For myself, with work, kids, pets, and the like, the time requirement is beyond my budget. So, I'm working on riding sections, something which can be done in 10 days or so, which is the most time I can afford. If you ever make it out to Japan, look me up. There's some pretty good riding here, the food and beer are excellent.
Very true. Time off work definitely needs to be factored in. I've kept my life as simple as possible (no house, no kids etc.). It's the only way I could manage trips like this. I'll probably pay the price one day but that's fine. I'll definitely be in touch if I make it to Japan. Cheers.
Matt, - thank you so, so much for sharing your inspiring story. You brought an "experiential nuance" to your videos that I have seldom seen in this type of video. You were just being honest about what you were feeling and thinking instead of putting on some sort of false front. You approached the project with gratitude and a beginners mind, and I appreciate that. Am I reading too much into your story from my experiences in the long remote trips that I have done, or was that your intent? Sometimes travel is boring, tedious and unnerving, but that is balanced with unexpected pleasures and surprises if you can pause and experience them. I am now thinking the GDMBR will be in my future. From a long list of questions, I have selected just a few. Were there any times that you were concerned for your safety? (Other than camping in grizzly bears back yards.) Rural 'merica IS the land of ever bigger pickup trucks and motor homes after all, sometimes driven by folks who are "annoyed" seeing cyclists. My experience is mostly in wilderness areas of north America (CDT, PCT) and way off the beaten path in Nepal, so motor traffic does concern me. And what was or were the most unexpected thing(s) that you experienced?

This has a great summary and really helpful. I couldn't afford the cost or the time to do the GDMBR, but I could do some of the UK rides like Rebellion Way and Harridan's wall, etc. This was really inspiring! Cheers, Paul
One of the reasons to do it in July/August is that at altitude, there can still be snow before then. After then, a lot of seasonal support evaporates. The Sierra Nevada is more susceptible than the GDMBR, but lots of bus services there shut down after Labor Day.
Thanks for the added insight. If I may -You are too modest and certainly underestimate this fantastic achievement (most achievers seem to have a tendency to do this.) I don't think I'd be alone considering anyone who's completed the GDMBR to be a few notches above "novice bikepacker!" That's one third of the triple crown for sh*t's sake!
I'm running a Marin 4Corners myself. When I take off next spring I'm going four panniers mostly so I can have more room for food and also want to bring my tent AND my hammock setup, both are ultralight, so weights not an issue and being able to use my hammock when possible, will be great. I think having my hammock tarp for when its pouring to setup a tent in will be nice too. I have a $3600/month budget, I'm going to try to keep it under $2000/month to save up some money with the lower the better. I'll say it again, I really enjoyed your series on the trip, was such great footage and as I learned from another comment, Ross did a great editing job on it. I can't wait to see what your next adventure entails. (hope some of the youtube monies helped pay for a bit of the trip)
It sounds like you're planning to do it in almost exactly the same way that I would if I did it again. I've fitted a front rack and ordered 2 X 5 litre panniers for the front. I will definitely be taking a tarp from now on but am not sure about the hammock. I think $2K per month is definitely achievable. Thanks for the support. Ross does a great job. Awesome bike. John loved his. He had the 29" wheels. I like the 27.5" ones because of the huge amount of clearance you get, essential in the mud. You'll love it. I also liked the method for tensioning the belt. It was definitely easier to do than on my bike. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat I haven’t commented much but I’ve loved your adventure, eagerly anticipating the next instalment. I wasn’t expecting this breakdown video of costs and whatnot, but it’s really helpful. Your videos have given me waves of nostalgia about my past bike-packing trips, and you have inspired me to ride this route next summer. That is, of course, dependant on getting in better shape!! As we’re in the same part of the country, I’d love to buy you lunch at some point and have a good old chat about the ride, and past, and future adventures. Not sure where the discrepancies are (haven't done a break down on my costs), but my total cost was $4,300. I was traveling with a friend the first half, so there was some shared lodging costs. That also doesn't include the air fare. Coming from Colorado, my flight to Calgary was only $250. My sister picked me up in New Mexico, so only gas etc. there. I finished the ride in 60 days. As for the comment on tires, some people do finish on one set of tires, I think that is pushing it. I replaced tires about half way through. The front tire completely failed in the Basin, forming a large bubble, because the internal fibers had failed. Other than that, I replaced brake pads and brake rotors once. I replaced the chain twice. That was in part from getting a not very compatible chain at a shop in Butte, MT.
$4300 is very good. I think I could have reduced mine to 5K but without flights. Flights and transfers all add up. I agree with you about the tyres. I should have made it clear that tyres can and do fail. I saw a few. A failure in the basin is bad luck. I heard a lot of Maxxis tyres have this delaminating problem. I replaced mine a bit prematurely but wanted to make sure I was in good shape for New Mexico. Cheers 👍

You’ve started something now! I’ve been in touch with a mate in Vancouver who builds bikes, it’s his passion and has god knows how many! How practical was it to hang a bear bag off a tree to their suggested dimensions of 12 feet up 6 feet over. From what I hear it works in theory on paper, but in real life, there's hardly a tree that fits that description.
Mat, loved the series. The footage you shot is stunning. Thanks for the effort it took to film it and ride past and then have to backtrack to get the camera! How about the European Divide? You would be one of the few if any that has done both! Just a thought!
Excellent videos of GDMBR - thank you! On your livestream, I'd be interested to know how you felt leaving your bike and gear unattended while shopping, etc. We're you concerned of theft? Did you lock up much? Did you take anything off the bike (computer, etc) when you left it outside a resupply store, etc?
It cost me more to fly home from Japan than a round trip there because I bought my ticket 3 days before I was leaving. Learned my lesson on that one. I can be terrible at sticking to it but $30 a day is plenty to budget for a bicycle tour. Wild camp and don't eat out much. In Japan I went hog wild and was spending hundreds a day on hotels and restaurants but I wanted to experience Japan, if I did the route you did I wouldn't have spent much at all. When I rode across eastern Canada I was under budget.
Sounds like a great adventure. My worry would be bears. Especially after a very close encounter with one on a hike in Canada. Not sure I’d want to repeat that….
That was a worry for me too. Thankfully I only had positive encounters with bears but I'll confess I felt a huge amount of relief once out of Grizzly country. It's still worth the risk in my opinion. Thanks for watching 👍
Another way to save money is to ride the trip in sections. I am a section rider and been riding 5 to 10 days of the GDMBR for the past 3 years. This year I rode from Colter Bay to Siliverthorne 660 miles. I estimated it cost me $1,200. Airfare from and back to Chicago $400, 4 nights in hotels $500, dinners $200 and groceries $100.
Good point. 660 miles for $1200 is good going. Especially considering flights. I seriously need to cut back for the next one. If I lived in the States I imagine I would section ride too. I may section ride the European Divide at some point. It's more road focussed so I'm going to try a short road trip in the near future. Thanks for following along 👍
I am watching the tour and noticed on the side bar you had what you spent on the Great Divide. Sounds like you can really do a budget trip or more comfort! Thanks for sharing great information. Still for this type of vacation even at your budget for the trip it is a bargain if it is personally affordable to you.

In response to your requests for Bikepacking routes in Europe, I have some suggestions for off road routes in Spain. Al Ballut in Córdoba; Montañas Vacias mostly in the province of Teruel ; La Ruta del Cid from Burgos to Valencia. Route descriptions is available on line. There are also Facebook groups and Instagram accounts providing additional information.

My question for your livestream…I have tons of riding experience, but very little in the rain. What did you wear and how effective was it? I especially find it hard to keep my feet dry …What was your experience with that? Thanks so much for sharing your adventures…. Like you, I’m very shy about doing that sort of thing!

Well well, this video slipped through the net. I was quite horrified at your eating out expenditure. Maybe it's because of how I grew up, but when I'm travelling with a tent I go into 'TightAsAFishesArse' mode, and aim to get by with minimum expenditure. There's also a long winded reason why I skimp on lavish spending whilst bike or backpacking and it has nothing to do with saving money. If I could comfortably ride the route in 60 days I'd take 70, as I like to have off route explorations or simply just spare time to lounge about. So between that theoretical $2175 and your actual $8k 😱, I'd be quite happy with $5k Great breakdown, thanks Mat 👍
I confess, I went a bit overboard on the GDMBR. I'll be looking to go TFA (as it shall henceforth be known) on the Trans Am, probably on the upcoming Europe trip too Cheers 👍.
Yes, indeed you did. TFA, I like that abbreviation, and Europe is always a place that I do my utmost to employ that mode. I always find it expensive when travelling through and usually quiz the more scruffily dressed locals as to where they buy their food from. On my next Europe trip I'll have panniers on my bike so I'll load up with bargain groceries whenever I get the chance. Trans Am sounds great, what timescale are you aiming to complete it in? Cheers 👍
@tonypaddler I'll use your technique of quizzing the scruffy locals. Panniers work better than anything in my opinion. They don't add anything to the overall width when you're actually riding. I think I'll take around two months but will possibly take a little longer depending on how I feel. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures yes, just follow the strongest body odour for the best bargains. Europe will be a road tour so panniers all the way but I've converted my road touring bike to Gravel Lite with the addition of 37 mm tyres in case I fancy any off-road tracks. Or get lost. I've just given the Trans Am a quick Google and it looks to be a great paved route. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures I enjoy biking but could never find a comfortable seat for long hauls. I tried to season myself and have tried I am sure a million seats, no success. I did a two night, three day trip years back and thought I would never walk again! haha! Now for a question: If you had to choose one, would it be belt or chain?
