What I learned from crashing on big jumps at Whistler Bike Park

In another video, we talked about how mountain biking can relieve stress. This is only true when you're using mountain biking as an escape-not when it's the actual CAUSE of the stress.
This week’s video takes place at Whistler Bike Park, and is a story about how your mental state can get you hurt on a mountain bike. In my case, feeling relaxed and happy makes me ride great. Feeling pressured and preoccupied to ride certain things almost always leads to injury. This is why so many people crash on their “last lap”. The park patrol medic even called it “the Witching hour”.
In this video, delays on getting footage led to preoccupation, and then to poor riding. Sound familiar?
There’s also a lesson about practice. I haven’t ridden big jumps since last summer, yet I jumped into a bigger trail than I had ever ridden after just a few days at Whistler. As someone with a history of riding poorly under pressure, this was not a smart idea.

Dude I totally feel you the line “I felt like a passenger on my own bike.” Stuck with me. I know this is a bike channel and I am a mountain biker but last February I was skiing and crashed at 36 mph of a jump being careless and racing a friend. I couldn’t ride my skis the same for the rest of the season out of fear and the loss of skill after my month recovery, anyway this was just my long dumb story about how that line meant something to me
@staticalphabetsoup637
@staticalphabetsoup637 5 лет назад
Mister Beaver it was one bad crash due to stupidity and lack of education that ruined by progression. My quick release kit on my front wheel let go when I hit a jump, landed and my front tire had left the groove, ate dirt really hard and had a massive bruise on my chest from where my handle bars smashed into me. I ended up winding myself on my handle bars when my front wheel slipped out and getting launched, bike landed on and I just layed there sounding like a wheezing sea lion, good times

I've only put 2 days of practice in at the local cycling park jump tracks. I'm still on the intermediate track but jumping and landing better than before even on these speed bumps. I'm dedicating one week to each track before moving up to the next. I very much appreciate your hop and jump videos. This one is a good capstone.

It’s interesting how psychological riding can be…case a jump and it freaks you out for the next several attempts… Then you clear it… And then you smash it like it’s not even there! Great riding, fellas! Keep it up and stay safe!

When you say “last run” it always seems to end up in injury, it’s happened to me, on bmx, and my friend countless times on downhill. I’m not a very superstitious guy, but it usually seems to end bad. So me and my friends just say bonus run

Wow. This video is incredible. I don't often audibly react, hold my breath, or cover my mouth in awe or fear when watching RU-vid. But I gotta say, I was guilty of all of there and more. Absolutely incredibly paced, stellar use of music and the fluctuation in your voice. Even the damn pauses were all perfectly placed to build tension. I nerd out a little bit when it comes to filming stuff, and watching someone who rides bikes for a living, it doesn't always occur to me that you do so much more behind the scenes. I really appreciate your storytelling and the anxiety and happiness I felt while watching this, I even got really stoked about stuff I wasn't even taking part in, you don't find that all wrapped up in a video too much anymore. One more thing I don't often do is leave comments. At all. But this video was the perfect exception to write to my hearts content and I'm glad I did. I hope this finds you and at least makes you smile to know you're making other people smile. Cheers Seth, please keep up the great content. I'll take quality over quantity any day 🤙

"Skill is for rent" -- this line struck me hard. It's so very true. Thanks for this video. I had this level of difficulty with the lower half of A-Line when I was out at Whistler. It's a comfort to see a rider of your skill working through dead sailor jumps and nosedives too.

Seth, I think you could make a really cool series if you take a short trip to Northern California. You could fly into Reno and go to Northstar in Tahoe which is a great lift access downhill park. However, I think your viewers would really enjoy if you went from Tahoe to Marin county (About a 3 hour drive) to visit the birthplace of mountain biking. You can ride some of the trails that started the sport, and talk to some of the pioneers of mountain biking. Your fan, Will S
