Rick Steves' travel philosophy encourages people to explore less-touristy areas of destinations and to become immersed in the local people's way of life. Rick has literally “written the book” on traveling to Europe with his series of guidebooks on European travel. I often cite Rick Steves as one of my inspirations for starting Yellow Productions. In this video I’ll share 20 things that I’ve learned from Rick Steves to form my own travel philosophy. I’ll also share some of the areas that Rick and I disagree on when it comes to how to travel.

Rick Steves has helped introduce me to travel & history in an interesting way. Traveling, to me, is a wonderful way to open up to the differences of the world. Stepping out from my small world & into a huge world of wonderful things. Being mindful about one’s surroundings for safety no matter if I’m in my own city or elsewhere.

My first trip to Europe, 30 years ago, was based off of Rick Steves suggestions. His office is near by and they hold great classes. My neighbor works as one of his Europe guides. My in-laws have done several of his tours. He's a HUGE travel influence in my life. 👍

wow, your section about people who travel for work but never leave the hotel really struck a cord with me. i work an annual international conference and most of the team just stays in the hotel or their room after long work days. not me!! i am out the door as soon as i can to explore. if possible, i’ll tack a day or two of personal days onto the trip to really get to know the area. i honestly just don’t get the whole “remain in the bubble” philosophy.

Hi Chris. Thank you for the great live stream. I When I travel. I also like to explore and learn about the culture I'm visiting. I try to see more of the local places than the tourist sites. Isn't that why you travel to a certain place. You benefit so much more when you interact with the locals and the memories you get are priceless. Take care.

Love from Ontario, Canada! My wife and I have been watching your videos on our TV's youtube feature for about 2-3 months now. Because of watching on TV, we were unable to subscribe to the channel. We watched this vlog just a few minutes after the streaming, but could not leave a comment. This was an educating vlog! You may be surprised to know that I came to know about Rick Steves through his less known younger sister Jan Steves. Jan is a musher, who was, till a few years ago, a regular participant in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Racing. She and her team of sled dogs were sponsored by Rick Steves. Again, your vlogs are the best. I have been watching your London vlogs recently, especially the scams and the free attractions, as I am about to travel to that city plus hike in two southern national parks in England (New Forest and South Downs). I always carry my camera bag with me and had goosebumps listening to your story. It seemed so different from Canada, where we would leave our jackets hanging on a chair in a restaurant and go to the washroom or leave our cell phone on the table and go to ordering the menu.

In Paris, we stayed at a hotel we found in the Rick Steves guidebook. It has a great location, a few minutes from the Eiffel tower. Besides the location, it was terrible. Old, small, furniture and bedding from the 80's, rundown bathroom and no air conditioning. His books are great, but I'd skip the accommodation section.

I’m glad you made the point about the best acts being free and Las Vegas. I get it, it’s not what it used to be. But I still love being there. I don’t gamble. But just going up and down the Strip and walking through each hotel/resort, they each have their own novelty/gimmick that really doesn’t cost you anything. Live flamingos, waterfalls, fountains, indoor canals, incredible architecture… and that’s before venturing off-Strip, which I keep telling people to do. Valley of Fire, Res Rock, Hoover Dam. Sure you need a car, but aesthetically, you wouldn’t believe those places exist just a stone’s throw from Las Vegas.

You mentioned maps Chris. The one thing that really irritates me is the lack of current maps online of the Vegas Strip or Downtown. You know for instance that if a map still has Hooters listed, it's not current. Or a map shows the casino as SLS instead of the return to the name Sahara. I know buildings are going up fast in Vegas, but you'd think they could fix their damn map faster than it takes to build a multi-million -dollar property! I just saw a map online that still shows the Dunes on there! OMG

Why would i need Rick Steevs when I've got Yellow Productions and Wolter's World? Lol. Seriously though, when preparing for a new destination I binge watch any relevant content on those two channels, then I look for any local youtubers from that destination. Often local tour guides will have their own channels. To one of your points it's true that many of them are advertising certain things to make an income, but I find that they usually will discuss that fine tuned local knowledge that is useful, similar to your Marcae example.

I know you talk a lot about big cities. I don't like them much (mostly) due to being on the autism spectrum and finding them more confusing and chaotic. It's not that "I don't know about them" or something. I do take a lot of road trips and I tend to avoid huge cities and go to smaller towns (there are horrible small towns though. Let's not kid ourselves. :D Flagstaff or Moab are great, Clovis NM not so much. And yes, I have been out of the country--Europe, the UK, and even the Soviet Union (back when it was the USSR).

I know this is an old post but I actually kind of disagree with him saying this. Don't think he does. What he does is if there is a touristy place, he tries to tell you the best way to see it. So like if is some museum with a famous work of art, to see it by booking a ticket ahead of time. Or going somewhere early or late. I'm not sure of any touristy place he says to avoid entirely. But perhaps I misunderstand what you meant by touristy--old post here though.

I bought Rick Steve's complete European DVD set twice as Christmas presents for my parents and late aunt. I enjoyed his Travels In Europe PBS show for many years. However, I saw him at the Travel and Adventure Show in Rosemont, IL (pre-Covid) and in the middle of his speech, he basically went on an anti-Trump rant and became very political and angry without saying specific names or groups. A few people in the audience stood up and left. My views on him changed after that. Very unprofessional.
@lgempet2869

Doesn’t surprise me & something I concluded long ago w/Rick Steve’s….similar to many celebrities, when one’s political message overshadows the primary focus (in this case, Rick’s expertise in travel), he’s defeated the entire purpose & undermined his travel-centered content….it’s SAD. I’m glad Chris doesn’t engage in that.

When I was in Spain, a French person asked me why they never met anyone American who voted for George Bush…..I told him generally people who vote republican don’t travel as much, and usually in a more isolated way, like on cruises.
