I really enjoy your videos. I’m retiring in January; can’t wait!

I have been watching all of your videos as soon as your channel popped up on my feed. I will have 32 and a half years in elementary education after this year. 20 years in second grade, 5 in first, and finishing 7 as a dyslexia teacher. Since I hit my magic number at year 29 I've been going back and forth about retiring. My husband retired after covid and it's been hard going to work every day while he does not. My son graduated from A&M in December and is now employed and doing wonderful. My daughter is at Tarleton in Stephenville, Tx starting her third year. After watching your videos along with a few others, I've decided I'm going to retire in May. I've made an appointment to talk to our retirement people this month to make sure I have calculated everything correctly. I do think that I will sub at least the minimum amount our school district requires until my daughter no longer needs help with college expenses. I want to thank you for your videos. They have been a positive encouragement for me and have made me feel less anxious or scared about leaving my permanent job. I do know that I'll probably start out subbing in high school or at our Career Center. I need a change from the littles. '

This is such great feedback! I feel the same way, not from education field but from healthcare, so I feel like kindred spirits through the pandemic stressors! Happy last year full time! :)

@@annyoung9313 You guys are awesome and I’m so happy for you. I miscalculated taxes so be sure you have that right. I ended up looking at my paystub over the years and got the correct amount taxes taken out🤦🏼‍♀️ Subbing has been great because I understand what they need. I did like 5 projects yesterday at a school just to be helpful. It’s about $250 total for two days a week. I need to do a substitute teaching video
@annyoung9313

@@MelindaMillerYes, please do a substitute video. I’ve watched a few, but I would like to see what your thoughts are. I could “wing it” with elementary students, but what do I do with high school kids if there are no sub plans. Also, cell phones are “locked in a pouch” while they are at school. What do you carry in your “teacher bag”?

@@annyoung9313 I just made a list for a substitute video😂😂😂 I haven’t run into not having sub plans yet😬 I am thinking of getting coloring books and colors even for HS kids🤷🏼‍♀️😆

I just love these videos, Melinda. You're so authentic, relatable, and you can laugh at yourself because you know yourself so well. I just feel like I'm spending time with a friend.

Great reflections Melinda. Love them all. You cracked me up with the "done zero projects" because they were so ambitious. Deck redo? kitchen cabinets repainting? Those take time to plan well and do them when you have time. Staying active and exercising, though, should stay a priority when in retirement, IMO. I am 3 years away 😅 myself. Thanks for your candid videos

@@jimi94u Yes, I need to do better about exercising! I have been walking every day and love that. Projects are overrated in retirement😂😆

I love your videos, I'm excited to work toward retiring earlier than originally expected... instead of 62yo, I'm now moving toward a more "moderate investment/savings" strategy and looking at ETA 4/30/2033...so

One of the lessons that really spoke to me was the one about giving yourself whatever time you need to complete projects. I have taken on a hobby (that I won't bother to try to describe) that has become more complicated as I learn how to improve upon things like my photo-editing skills. While this means I will get much better final results, it also means the entire project will take much longer. This created a challenge for me as I retired from a world in April where I usually had very tight deadlines. I had to get comfortable with the idea that there is no rush and I can take as long as I like to get everything right. 👍 Meanwhile, I can also see that some projects will probably be addressed somewhere down the road rather than in the immediate future. 😃

@@robsavage3217 I am so glad I feel like I was given permission to slow down on projects after watching one video. I’m frustrated with myself when these things seem so obvious but I miss them. I have to remind myself that I have nothing else to do so take all the time I need.

You seem very conflicted about retirement and doing so at a young age. Why did you retire?
@MelindaMiller
@MelindaMiller 5 часов назад
@@elizabethalvarado813 Most teachers/principals etc that can make it to 30 years retire. My pension is plenty to live on but most also retire and then do something else and make two “salaries.” Most also have a plan or spouse I’ve realized now that I am here. I knew had to quit or retire. So technically I’m retired but maybe I just quit???
