What To Look For At The Thrift Store that can make you Money....but more importantly, choosing items that will make your home beautiful and lift your spirit. I thrifted a lot this week and I want to show you what I got for my new home. I spent my week shopping at Goodwill, Salvation Army and Flowerland for treasures. I found so many wonderful special things that had so much meaning to me. I go through each item I bought and tell you why I bought it, how much it is worth and how I displayed it in my home. I also talk about a new neighbor I have gotten to know...her name is Vivian and I discuss my chance encounter with her.
Thank you so much for the love and support you all have shown me this year. So many times I was feeling down and your comments and messages brought me to such a better place of hope and happiness. Thank you for your kind words about the new place here...I am slowly adjusting to everything new!

I live in a small rural community with a take it or leave it room at our local dump. I scored one day with 3 boxes of Villeroy and Boch Acapulco China made in Luxembourge . Perfect condition place settings for 11, and serving pieces to boot. It is from 1967, year I was married and was the China I loved but I chose a safe pattern per advice from elders. 52 years later the Universe gifted me this for being patient. SCORE

Hi Susan it is Annie it is nice you got those great bargains at the thrift store those pictures are greatm have seen that Paris one myself aroung the stores here in Australia, I think you are very drawn to Paris because you may have had a "past life" there at some stage. I have felt that way about San Fransisco had many dreams and past life recalls from life back there. Also some hypnotherapy pointed to a past life there too so I am a believer in past lives. Sometimes at the thrift shops I see things and buy them that remind me of a past life ....as if I had seen those objects before they could be statues pictures pottery or dinner sets dishes etc it is really amazing that feeling I get from some of these things I see and buy at thrift shops, Bit like the past coming back to say hello! Today I got nine small porcelain vintage dolls about 7-8inches in height all dresses in Victorian era dresses so beautiful all of them in different outfits, there were just those 9 dolls and they were a dollar each, a good bargain. I am not sure what message is in that for me but maybe I have to work on my feminine side? It is such a joy going to these thrift stores and it is really my main outing for the week too.

Hi Susan, your new home looks beautiful.This week I have been reflecting back over forty years. In 1980 I was in a very serious relationship.I was 17.How on earth could it have been so? It's very simple.It was with the love of my life.Heres where it becomes shocking for me.If he came to my door right now,I wouldn't ask him in.I said to my son earlier today.No matter how much you love somebody they really don't deserve you.If you have self respect, empathy and self love the only person that deserves you is you.Being single at my age,57,is the happiest I can be.I look at so many couples around my age miserable together.I don't know a happily married couple in my age group.Even couples I thought were happy,I find out they are not.I look and feel I look better than I have in 40 years.Its coming from within. Hi Jane, I agree with you, I was watching Susan's video and I look around my house at all my things I have collected over 40 years and I am so pleased, and comfortable and content, and so are my dog and cat. For so long, I looked for someone to make me happy. I was married (not happily) and after my marriage broke up, I decided to live alone and love myself. It has been 12 years, and I am still so very happy on my own. I am 66 years old, and I feel this is the best time of my life. I love thrifting and fixing up my house! Really, what could be more fun? @@reesepeacock Hi AS,when I was at home I grew up with just a brother.We each had a bedroom to ourselves.When I went to college I had the single room at the top of the student house,on my own.Then I got married at 19. I really wasn't ready to share a room,never mind a bed.When I was married for 37 years I was married to a man who was abusive.He loved giving the silent treatment.He stayed out late.Sometimes I wouldn't see him for days.So all said I have always been on my own in a odd way.So it's no wonder I don't find it strange.My son is at university.I love when he comes home but I am fine when he isn't.I too am having some of the best years.We are strong women.We love ourselves and we deserve to be happy.Goodnight and god bless from a peaceful,autumn night in Ireland.☘️

I have been married for 48 years going on 49 next month, God has blessed me with the most wonderful husband in the world, we are happily in love he is the love of my life I know i’am his. As a single mother of 3 boys I had to thrift to clothe and furnish my home and I always thought how lucky people were that could just walk into a store and buy new. But I can truly say my boys were the best dressed and my home always looked beautiful. Now that I’m older I still continue to thrift because I’ve grown to love it. To find that special treasure that makes you smile. When I bring something home and look it up and see it goes for so much more my husband always says you should sell for the money. I say oh no I purchased it because I love it.

I love going thrifting, it’s like a treasure hunt. You just never know what you might find. My aunt was an antique collector and had a really cute little shop in Missouri. When she came out to visit us one summer, I showed her a vase that I had picked up at a garage sale and she told me it was a vintage piece worth over $500.....I about died. I think I paid $3 for it and just thought it was cute for my bedroom. I kept it and it is still in my bedroom and every time I look at it, it makes me smile. I love your new apartment and how you have decorated it with the things you love and make you happy. How cute Dezi teaching you to fetch. He’s quite a smart little guy! Just about everything in my apartment has been thrifted so to pick one thing would be impossible. Like your new friend, I thrift for the same reasons to be with people and to connect to their energy. I live alone and have for most of my adult life which fits for me but I do miss people sometimes. It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, where the province (I live in) has put down new restrictions for gathering and really I'm feeling for the folks that are not accustom to being alone on holidays. I go thrifting with my daughter-in-law on occasion.... She wasn't looking for it but ended up finding a gown that she wore to her daughters wedding. It was a miracle find because it fit her perfectly, it was very well made, and it was only 4 dollars. I kid you not. She is a beautiful woman anyway and she looked exquisite in that dress. We couldn't believe the price. We looked it over and over to make sure there was nothing wrong with it. Thriting is a blast and I love it❤️

My grandmother had a Satsuma lamp that I always loved. When she passed away, I got the lamp and had it in my place. I was walking past an outdoor flea market in Manhattan years and years ago, and I spotted a similar Satsuma lamp. I got it for a few dollars and cleaned it up. I have the two of them, a coordinated pair that look as if they were meant to go together, with beautiful gold leaf lampshades (so hard to find) on two art deco coffee tables in my family room. That was the best find I have ever had, as I was able to complete something that my grandmother might have wanted to do. For all I know, perhaps she had two at one time and one broke (they are hand painted ceramic from the 1920s, so 100 years old). I saw one like it on Poshmark for $1600. So, the pair could be worth about $3200. Imagine that! 💖👩🏻

I grew up thrifting and yard sale shopping with my mom! I love to go to the stores around me, but I am a little nervous with Covid right now. I was reselling some of the deals I had found on Marketplace. That has slowed down a bit, but was fun! My best find was a 1950 Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine in excellent condition! These small machines were some of the first portables, albeit heavy! I am a quilter and many quilters use them to piece quilts! I was thrilled when I found her inside of her original case! I dropped off a donation at my local Goodwill and something told me to go in and look around! She looked like an old typewriter in a case, but I knew as soon as I saw her, what she was! I could hardly breathe as I grabbed her up and put her in my cart! I paid $18 for her! I believe most featherweights sell for $200-300 and up in good condition! She sews and pieces like a dream! I named her Adele! After all, she is a Singer! Lol! Loved your video! See you next week!

This video has totally inspired me. There are so many lonely people in this world and you never know what a kind word or act will do. Best thing I ever thrifted? A vintage boiled wool coat from the 50’s with the tags STILL on IT from a local department store. I wore that thing out!! Every time I wore it I imagined myself as a local Seattle celebrity in her retirement years that lived in an apartment near the sound, smoking a cigarette and listening to Frank Sinatra.

I noticed that wreaths are very expensive at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, even with a coupon. One day my husband said, "you can make that." So we went to the artificial flower section, I picked up the same flowers and wire form. At the check out we were shocked, the store made price was $59.99, the price of everything to DIY was $92.00 before tax. So I learned a valuable lesson, not everything is cheaper to make. LOL

Once I thrifted a cigar box full of makings for fishing flys. I held onto it and gave it to my grandson when he had really gotten into making fly fishing flys. The look on his face made it worth every minute I waited to give it him. He’s a wonderful boy.

Your new apartment is wonderful. Even tho it is larger than your previous apartment, you have made it cozy and homey. We have similar tastes, and I can almost feel what it feels like to be sitting in your living room. I can't believe you have settled in so quickly, and I bet you absolutely love that you have the extra room for your editing, etc. I adore thrifting and try to go often. I made my guest room into a "French bedroom" and almost every accessory has been thrifted. I love the thrill of the hunt! I feel like your friend sometimes too, and knowing that other people feel that way also helps me cope. I think you have made a special friend and so soon after just moving in. Good sign. Your story about Vivian was touching..I'm married, have been 53 years, but I know that one day, if I outlive my husband I will be alone...and that is my biggest fear. I have two children and other family so I'm not really alone, but one can be lonely in a crowded room. I'm so happy for you, and for Vivian too, that you have started a friendship. It's great to have good neighbors and know their name and know that they are so close by. It feels less lonely I'd guess. And it feels good to be 'connected".

The best thing I ever thrifted is several Glass Christmas trees for my dining room table. I put them out every year. And add crystal deer with them. It looks magical

Your story about your neighbor really hit home. Sometimes I just wonder if anyone remembers I'm alive. Being older (71) without family is a daunting existence. There are many thrift stores where I live so maybe that would help just to go look at what's new. Thank you for your encouragement and wonderful spirit!

Susan, I found you in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. I honestly feel (nobody but a poet will understand this probably) like I made a new friend even though I feel as though we will never meet in person or even communicate in private. I am 70 and so many things you spoke of resonated with me in so many ways (divorced, now widowed, started my life over, yada yada) I just couldn’t believe it, still can’t, but I feel as though God had our paths cross “electronically” if you know what I mean. Hi Susan, One of my favourite things to do, is Thrifting, I never ever think rubbish, I think that amongst all the not so desirable bits, could be a real Gem. I love that....I'm rather boring when it comes to paintings. Im always drawn to the impressionist, I have done since a child. I have quite a few prints, but now I have my husbands artwork everywhere. Including a beautiful one in my filming room, of Paris. You would love Paris Sue. I loved this twist on your thifting! My favorite thing I thrifted would be odd to most but it was the metal tines of an old pitchfork. My husband's father had been a blacksmith/welder and we live in his house and have many things to remind us of his vocation around the house. My grandparents were farmers. Putting that pitchfork up made me feel like I have a place in this home. Blessings to you and Desi from Midas and me!

The very favorite item I thrifted was a crystal vase I got at a Salvation Army years ago! The transparent cut of the crystal and its rainbow of colors create a kaleidoscope of patterns when exposed to the natural sunlight.... it fascinates me when it castes images of things on my wall, like magic! Ur video was exquisite, I hung unto every drop of honey 🍯 that spilled from ur mouth and heart ❤️!!!!

I used to thrift because I had to. Now, I don’t have to, but I still do because I love it so much and who doesn’t like to find a bargain? I find it sad to see photos like the gentleman in the military uniform at the thrift store. It’s like nothing is sacred anymore. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I once found an entire box of some old grandma’s recipes written out by hand. It made me cry. Now, I repurpose those into art pages and mixed media art pieces so they live on. I’m glad you invited the lady next door thrifting with you. It means everything just to know you have something small to look forward to to get you through the next week. You have a beautiful heart. - Thank you for sharing your finds with me. Hi Susan. Yes please teach us some more about thrifting. My daughter just had a baby and wants to a work at home job. The baby has several allergies to different foods and she is scared to death about leaving him with anybody to go to work. And nevermind daycares. Also I would love to be a pen pal with anybody interested.Or we can talk on Facebook Messenger. That way we can share pictures from our families, Memes ect. My mom passed away from Alzheimer's and pneumonia but I think the isolation is what did her in. She stopped working too early. The brain is muscle you gotta use it or you loose it. Kisses to Dezi

I so adore Fall.....I can sit for hours and watch the trees shed their leaves, they dance, twirl, race each other to the ground, and soon the trees will be bare, showing us their naked strength under all that glorious fluff......yes, I'm a tree person.....enjoy!!

To keep from losing Desi's toys off your lovely balcony, how about getting a piece of plexiglass cut to fit your railing area? You'll still be able to see through it, it won't break in winter and it will save you the trips downstairs through the snow and rain to retrieve his toys. 💗💗

Such a lovely day, i should be outside. This week at Nu2u, I found a Roman iron daybed for 20$. Perfect for my downsizing at 69 , only a frame but, it makes me feel "lighter". And I could bolt it together all by myself.

I think what I love most about your apartment has how you hang your art work. It's not like 2 pictures over a sofa, perfectly matched. It's like a gallery where you really have to peruse so you don't miss something special. I bought a small oil painting when thrifting. Only 4 x 6. A path through brightly colored trees. But the frame is ornate and gold. Because it's small, it shines like a jewel!!

I love the art pottery, I am originally from Zanesville Ohio which is the art pottery capital of the world and home to Weller pottery and Roseville pottery is about I don’t know 10 miles from Zanesville. They used to have a yearly pottery festival were pottery collectors displayed their works. I have several pieces of Weller, Roseville, and Gonder pottery. 💕

I've been thrift store shopping for years. Some of the best wardrobe comments I hear are when I'm wearing an outfit I found in a thrift store, designer labels at pennies on the dollar. I recently found a pair of small diamond earrings. They were displayed alongside costume jewelry and were encrusted in dirt looking like something to throw away, but I took a chance, invested $1.00 + tax, and showed them to my sister. She was convinced they were real and took them to a jeweler to be cleaned and appraised. The diamond are real and sparkle brilliantly, and now they're my favorite pair of earrings. Thrift store shopping truly is treasure hunting!

Susan, another lovely video. I noticed the Roseville vase in your tour last week. I love Weller too. The nice thing about thrifted knock offs is you can paint and embellish them if you want to make them look more like an original. I feel the same way you and Vivian feel. There are a lot of us. But you know a true friend when you share the joy of thrifting. I lost mine 3 years ago to cancer. I called her house on Diamond the "Doll House". Her decor was amazing and her home had so much character. It was her first home she bought on own on her own and she was 50 when bought it. Thank you for reminding me of the time we spent together. I’ve been thrifting since I love as old enough to drive. When I divorced my first husband I had to start over and I bought most of my clothing from second hand. Dishes, furniture, linens, you name it. I really enjoyed it and still have many of those things still in my present home. Thank you for sharing yourself and your kindness and wisdom with us. ❤️❤️🤗🤗

Beautiful, as always. Try putting up some fine wire across the bottom of the balcony - something like chicken wire. It cannot be seen from below and would keep toys upstairs where they belong. That little punkin' Desi - he is soooo adorable.

I thrifted a Goebel, called the Good Shepherd today for $15.!!! I also got a jade braclet (I have to have my jeweler check it) for $2. I find treasures all the time, most of my things in my home are thrifted. The first set of leaves, wall hanging was beautiful I will be on the look-out for them. I had the second set you showed Home Interior the leaves are somewhat bendable, and the one with the tiny leaves I saw a bunch of them for 80 cents each at the thrift store today. Love the thrill of the hunt!

Loved this video on thrifting. Once thing that stands out is that even though you live alone, with Desi you go out of your way to make it a home, you decorate always and its cozy, inviting and its a really good example of self care. I was so happy to hear that you and Vivian will duet together when you can. Think if we only knew how many lonely people are out there we could find one another and make a difference in someones life. This video is a reminder that even if we are living on a shoe string budget there are lovely finds at the Thrift store. My mom used to go to thrift stores all the time, I miss the wonderful finds she would get for me and my kids esp after the divorce when it was such a financially strapped time for us. She had a way like you of finding the treasures! Keep up being wonderful you!
