Amazon does not seem to price match all the Criterion sale titles but it's worth checking. TIP: Some films that are out of stock on the B&N site (and local stores) are available at 50% off on Amazon.
@@ElliotCoen Yes, it seemed to take a while for the price matching on Amazon to kick in. Also titles that where out of stock on B&N have become available again.
@@ElliotCoen unless it's the final week and b&n is oos, I say wait it out. They've been really good about replenishing those titles with haste. Blue Velvet 4K was out of stock on the first day of the sale but they had more just 2 days later. I'd rather give the sale to B&N and show Criterion that their outlet of choice is worthwhile.
These are the Criterion movies I got on July 50% off sale. for $532. To Die For, Thelma & Louise, The Roaring Twenties, La haine HATE, 100 Years of Olympic Films (Includes Tokyo Olympiad), Rebecca, David Lean Direct Noel Coward (4 movies: In Which We Serve, This Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter), My Own Private Idaho, Passion of Joan of Arc, The Heiress, Woman in the Dunes, Badlands, Targets, Romeo and Juliet, After Hours. Some others I found online for free so returned those (Anatomy of a Fall, Summertime on Hulu). 8 of these were cheaper or available on Amazon when out of stock on B&N.
Rest assured that the 4K of Bound looks amazing! I too really want to upgrade Floating Weeds from my DVD. Roger Ebert's commentary is worth the price of admission alone.
As usual, these sales don't help anyone outside the US... These Amazon "sale" prices end up still being more expensive then buying regularly off of WowHD after the added import and shipping fees. This sale really doesn't extend out of the US at all as the regular prices on WowHD that are basically the same year round are still quite a bit cheaper. No UK benefit
WowHD was great when you didn’t have to pay VAT on top. You could get Criterion imports for £13 each. Haven’t used them since because their customer support has been woeful. They don’t get my recommendation but each to their own.
@@ElliotCoen that’s why you save up a couple of titles to buy at once. When you buy over £150 worth then you don’t get charged the VAT. It’s by far the best way of importing I have found for the price.
I got a handful. Not as many as usual because Kino was having their sale at the same time...and now Arrow announced their sale also. They're trying to break us all with these concurrent sales. I ended up going with Pat Garrett, La Haine, Wings of Desire, Perfect Days, Risky Business, The Roaring Twenties, Lone Star, and The Underground Railroad.
I picked up - All that Money Can Buy (also known as The Devil and Daniel Webster) - absolutely phenomenal film. It was filmed by RKO in between Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons (which was pointed out in the supplements), and it really does feel like it. What a great blind buy, and I highly recommend! - The Victim Sin - very enjoyable classic, and a great blind buy. Heavy drama, music, and a little bit of Mexican noir! - I am Cuba - I haven't seen yet - Peeping Tom - Haven't seen yet And I think I'm going to head back and pick up Orson Welles's The Trial. I passed on it last year, and I think I'm ready to pick it up now.
@@ElliotCoen I've been waiting to get this one specifically- just saw it's sold out at B&N online, and Amazon isn't price matching the title yet. Have to keep checking for it. Picked up "Breathless," "Rules of the Game," "Blue Velvet" and "The Last Picture Show."

I picked up 4ks of Farewell My Concubine, Branded to Kill, Blue Velvet, Peeping Tom, and The Rules of the Game and Blu rays of Cure, Dogfight, and Floating Weeds. I caught the new 4k restoration of Farewell My Concubine in theaters and it was beautiful. So stoked that Criterion released it!
These sales are bloody dangerous! Lol. I picked up my first order today but I suspect next pay I might put one more in because there are still a handful I really want to pick up like the Pasolini 101 set, Roaring Twenties and The Trial. I wouldn't mind Pat Garret, World Cinema V 4 and Ranown Westerns 4k as well (though I also have the Indicator set). I do use a US based forwarding service to get these to Australia so it helps with these sales and other ones where the label won't ship directly OS like Shout Factory and Kino Lorber. Anyway for my first up haul I picked up 7 in total: The Lamorisse Red Balloon set, the Freaks set, Pinocchio 4k, Thelma and Louise 4k, Malcolm X 4k, Wall-E 4k and ... The new Barry Lyndon 4k set ....ok so I might be lying about that last one, sorry Elliott 😄. Final one was La Bamba on Blu ray. Can't wait to get them !
I've already picked up The Tales of Hoffman. I was immediately drawn to the Powell, Pressburger, and Moira Shearer combo. I'm also thinking of getting Night of the Hunter, and an IG poll of mine decided I should get House 😊
Immediately grabbed The Underground Railroad & the Floating Weeds set. Almost certainly getting the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4K and have several more in my maybe list depending on funds.
I ordered Lone Star, Thief, and Farewell, My Concubine. There is very little in the collection that I don’t have and still want. I’m nothing even close to a completist. I’d say they probably only release five or six titles a year I have any interest at all in owning - enough, with the occasional backlist title thrown in, to see me buy two or three each sale and be content. 🙂
Yeah got the Pat Garett 4k, Peeping Tom 4k, Blood Simple 4k, Uncut gems 4k, the 7th seal 4k..from wes anderson life aquatic, Rushmore, and bottle rocket blur rays….and the bruce lee set.
I grabbed Peeping Tom 4K, Blue Velvet 4K, Bound 4K, Werckmeister Harmonies 4K, Anatomy of a Fall (bought the Ranowns last time - they look great). My record was over 100 movies in the July 22 sale!
You're right that there's something for everyone, even someone like me, who ignores 85% of their output. 😂 But I already caught up with everything I missed and wanted last year, so this month I only got To Die For and Girlfight. They didn't have Bound in stock. All others I wish will be coming out later, so for next sale then.
I bought Bound, The Watermelon Woman, and Tampopo. Also used the sale to pre-order All of us Strangers. Edit: Went back and ordered Floating Weeds too since you made me curious.
So far I’ve got Bound 4K, Blue Velvet 4K, Pink Flamingoes, The Life Aquatic, Cure, Muholland Dr 4K, Pat Garrett, Peeping Tom 4K and One Eyed Jack’s. It was also nice to see a few young gen z folks like me buying a few of those films when I was shopping despite majority these days are into gaming/TikTok. The best sellers over here so far in my store is Bound and Blue Velvet. All cleaned out
I bought: Werckmeister Harmonies 4K, Soy Cuba 4K, Trainspotting 4K, Peeping Tom 4K, Querelle, and Crumb. I might go back for Perfect Days. I want F is for Fake but can’t find it at any in store locations.
I'm dropping a lot of coin I've saved up for this sale. I've gotten a dozen releases in-store already and a bunch online, and I've got a few yet to pick up.
