Hello from 2024! As a bass beginner, I feel so encouraged by learning how pro bassist like you practice everyday. p.s. didn't know you have this channel until I heard you mentioned it to talkingbass... Have been following BassBuzz for a while since I started the bass journey. Digging in here as I'm curious to know more intermediate and advanced stuff (guess I'm a "fast learner" too). Going to sign up for your beginner bass course!! Thank you for not leaving us in the dust and helping beginners get started!!

Thank you very much for this video. Trying to figure out how to practice has been a big problem for me lately. It never feels like what I'm doing is really practice. But this gave me a good sense of how personalized "Practice" can really be and I don't feel so bad anymore. Also I'm gonna start a training journal, that feels like a neat idea.

This was a great video, Josh. There are a lot of revealing, very human qualities that come through when you bring up things that you struggle with. For me, it's just as inspirational to hear that someone so good, didn't just arrive there on day #1.

thank you Im still a newbie to bass Ive been playing for 4 months now, Im in school and i have a lot of time to practice i practice like 2 hours a day every day and seeing how you schedule your practice routine motivated me to have one to all Ive been practicing is black sabbath songs and some stuff you put on the bass buzz channel so thank you

I personally loved this video Josh, please do more. It's very helpful to know someone who has been playing as long as you still gets in the dumps about not being able to play certain lines but keeps working until you get it. It's very easy to try something a few times and then give up, but to see that someone like you can struggle still, makes it easier to keep plugging away. If that makes sense. Love the course by the way!

I started learning bass about 6 months ago, started murdering jazz standards about a month ago, and started keeping a journal about 10 days ago. Therefore, this video was perfectly timed!!! Thank you so much for your honesty and openness about the some of the difficulties you have faced in maintaining a practice routine. I'm sure some people will give a thumbs down, or have negative things to say because this is, after all, THE HATEFUL HATEFUL INTERNET. Let them try to find happiness in their misery. This is so interesting! Your approach can be applied to other types of practice. While I have my own rehearsal routine for memorizing and creating Hawaiian chant voicings, I can see the benefit of adopting aspects of your approach. Thank you for sharing! Do more of these please.

I thought your practice video was very interesting and a nice counter point to the typical instructional vid. It gave me with some ideas about how I could approach my own practicing regimen. Years ago I bought a guitar and a 'how to play' book and spend weeks trying to hammer out Mull of Kyntyre 🙈 I quickly gave up, it was such a shit way of learning. I am a massive Jamiroquai fan and recently feel called to start playing bass. Coming across your vids is so exciting to me as this is a fun, efficient way of learning. My bass is arriving next week and I'm beyond excited. Ive already used my old guitar to practise the fingering/fretting, 12 bar and the funk box and I cant wait to translate that to my new bass. Josh that ramble was truly inspirational for me to re focus myself on B2B, yep that song came along! and I fell flat on my face. I followed your instruction to move forward but the Ska number didn't help, lol. This video is so important because it shows you have the same hurdles at your level. I've gone from being well beyond my goal to being months behind. This vid has taught me we learn different things at different speeds and so has answered a huge question why can I do this but not that!. Oh yeah I've done everything from going back on myself to trying challenging stuff just to improve my speed, dexterity and consistency . I know my plucking technique is irregular, part ability, part not wanting to upset my neighbour sh1t she bangs on the wall when my alarm goes off in the morning so I tend to pluck gentle rather than consistently . So yeah this video has a lot to offer; beyond B2B which is outstanding within its self . So thanks for this its given me a boost

For continuous slapping, try doing them with an open hand. Uncurling your fingers will balance out the weight distribution of your hand more. I can slap all day this way.

Thank you for that. It is encouraging when you see that young professional musicians have the same issues as us middle aged bassists trying to get from beginner stage to intermediate. The journey is a huge part of the fun, even though it does not always seem like it.

Hey Josh... thank you very much for this video. I feel it's really great and it helps me a lot. I've been looking for quite some time now for exactly that kind of content... Structuring my practice rountine is something that I feel is important to improve on the instrument, at least this is what I feel now after approx. 2 years of learning to play the bass... And it would be somewhat akward for me if you were playing or teaching how to play bass notes or rhythm when it's actually all about theoretical information... so, naturally, there has to be a lot of talking - imho. If someone blames you for talking too much maybe it's not the right content he or she is looking for. Please do keep up the great work and lots of greetings from Berlin, Germany. If you ever plan to come over here, i. e., to do a show, etc. I'd highly appreciate it if you let me know.

Thanks, - that was actually helpful. I have been keeping a practice journal for another "practice" that I do, and it has been inspiring to see what kind of accountability I get from writing the contents of each session down... But I haven't been doing it for my music/bass practice, and I'm sorry to admit that I often go three or four days a week without practicing, (and I'm a beginner)… Yikes! I'm going to bust out another notebook for practicing bass, -- and start writing stuff down, and keep on track. I'm currently working on Bouree by Jethro Tull, and there is a tricky position shift down the neck, as well as some string crossing that is a little awkward for me. AND! I'm going to isolate the intervals in that tune, and drill myself on them, so I don't come off as such a dumb ass in my weekly Zoom lesson, ('cause my teacher quizzes me on the intervals). So I think my first entry should look something like... Bouree: 1. Isolate position shift 2. Isolate string crossing bits 3. Play through first 66 measures at 60% tempo 4. Drill intervals - (Minor 7 up and down the neck) I've got the time, - there is no excuse. Thanks Again!

And secondly because seeing bass players like you, who struggles with the same things I do. It encourages me to keep playing, even when there are some days I think I suck . I found this really interesting! I have been learning to play bass for 10 days😂. But I’ve watched a lot of your videos before taking the plunge and buying a bass. I keep looking at bassbuzz and wondering when to take the plunge. I’m using Fender play which is free for 3 months to get the basics right (I have many bad habits from playing guitar badly). I like the idea of using drum beats with missing beats to get timing right but what’s the best way to set that up? Thanks for the videos!

Thanks for this!! I am fascinated to hear practice regimens. For me, my practice can become so fluid that I forget what I started on. A few years of classical guitar actually helped with some of the discipline portion. I journaled every day then. It's huge! This was not rambley(?) at all. So I've got an acoustic bass I've been playing since Christmas. I'm noticing a helluva lot of string noise. Have you ever played an acoustic/electric bass and if so do you have any tips with differences you've noticed when playing?

I know you've had that bass for years but I think it's time for a clean! It's looking almost as bad as my '82 Ibanez :)

How do you spent your tile when you practice ? I mean are you doing things like 20min rythm then 20min technical exercice then 20 min other things like scales etc etc. Thanks for you awesome works. Best regards
