For your consideration for your next Shirley Jackson: We Have Always Lived In The Castle is one of my favorite books EVER and I’d love to hear what you think of it!
I second this! I love that book and her short stories, but I just couldn’t get into The Haunting of Hill House. We Have Always Lived in The Castle is still a top book for me even though I read it back in high school ❤️
I watched the Haunting of hill House - TV show. And loved it and bought the kindle edition. Yet to read. Glad to know you loved the book. Now I can bravely walk into it. 😊
Merphy, your ads just gets more creative over time to the point where i'm actually waiting for it every vids. And i hate ads to the death. Btw Love uzumaki, junji ito's horror just hits different.
Thank you for these recs Merphy! I didnt know Shirley Jackson wrote actual books. I only knew about her short stories at first. I also gotta check out that Daphne du Maurier novel. Right now i wanna read Frenchman's Creek from her the most.
Earlier this month I read Gideon the Ninth, and I really want to reread it now. It put me in a skeleton/necromancy mood and I am sad to say I don't have many books on that. I ended up rereading The Bone Witch, which is a ya fantasy following someone that has the rare magic of resurrection. Partly because I really enjoyed it the first time I read it and has been a while since I did, and also because I want to continue this series but I never picked up the sequel. Honestly, I'll take anything involving the dead or the undead at the moment. Also Age of Assassins sounds amazing.
I started The Haunting of Hill House last October and was bored by it and dnf-ed it. Half way through or so. Can't remember. I am too scared to watch the Netflix show though.
I love the tv show, but I really disliked the book (not enough happened and didn't like the characters). They're both very different, except for some names and the setting, so don't be put off watching the tv show.
This month I read: breasts and eggs by meiko kawakami a brilliant book about the lives of a family of working class women from Osaka in Japan. This is not a drill which is a collection of essays on the climate put together by extinction rebellion, the climate crisis disruption group. It’s very clear on why they chose the tactics they do and very interesting too. Currently reading how to become vegan as I’m possibly prepping to try veganury soon (wish me luck) and speak no evil by uzodinma iweala which is about an American boy whose Nigerian parents find out he is gay and about what happens after that. Really wonderfully written, it’s written in very sparing prose with very little fluff and that’s a style I think only a very talented writer can pull off and still create a story that’s so real that you b watch it play like a film in your head
Oooh Age of Assassins is on my TBR... I liked the covers so much that I went wild and bought the entire trilogy. SO I'm very glad that you liked the book that much. 😂
I really enjoy your videos. Your passion and excitement talking about books is infectious. You turned me onto the Stormlight Archives and I cannot thank you enough!! I am loving it!! Thank you for taking the time to do what you do. I appreciate your videos so much that I even let all the ads play through and click on them just to help support your efforts. lol!! :-)
I read bear town this October, on your recommendation. It was mind-blowing, really amazing and I'm so glad I read it, but it was not easy to get through. It made me extremely emotional and I screamed and cried a lot. I also think the ending is one of my favourite endings I ever read. So thanks for recommending Fredrik Backman!
Oh I have this on my shelf! I really want to read it by the end of this year, but also reading Rhythm of War. I'm like 500 pages in and took a break for creepy reads in October. I plan to read Bear Town in December!
If you love The Haunting Of Hill House you should watch the 1963 adaptation called The Haunting. It’s a classic and captures the creepiness of the novel perfectly 👌🏼
I dunno, Merphy, what SORTS of weirdos post videos on RU-vid? Your ads are getting better over time - good job! After reading next to nothing for the last year, I'm finally picking up books again. Thank you for being my window into BookTube and reminder of how much I love reading!
Merphy, you will probably like Cabal by Clive Baker. 😇 it is a Supernatural Thriller novel and you would love the characters. There's a movie adaptation of it called DarkBreed and there's going to be a tv show is coming out of it. Highly recommend it.
I love Shirley Jackson. The Lottery was my favorite short story for a long time but you should 100 percent read We Have Always Lived in The Castle! It is my favorite of her books. I wish more book stores carried her works!
The Haunting of Hill House .. what you were saying about liking the slow/gets-in-your-head type stuff-there's a specific genre for that! It's _'Psychological Horror'_ (as opposed to just straight-up Horror or such) ! ^--^ That's my kinda horror as well; since I'm actually not ordinarily into horror, mostly, unless it crosses-over with something I *am* into = like psychological shtufff, or werewolves. Lol 🤭🤭💜
Best Halloween book of all time is Dead Beat. Second best Halloween book is Cold Days. I just want to hear your opinions on the Dresden Files, so badly. Best character named Murphy! (granted, spelled differently)
This month I read: It by Stephen King (good in the beginning, and then I did not want to read it anymore) Dracula by Bram Stoker (I hated it) Buddy read Mistborn with my boyfriend and oh my god!!!! I know i’m super late but oh my god Dune (it was really cool, awesome plot the writing style to me was hard to read, i felt like I was reading the bible for some reason. I’ve never read the bible but I feel like that’s what the writing style is) Looks like your month was better haha
Merphy, the board game "Betrayal at House on the Hill" is partially based on the Haunting of Hill House (among many other things). So many creepy tropes and a lot of fun. You might like a look. It's better if everyone roleplays.
Have been reading 'The savage tales of Solomon Kane' by Robert E. Howard this October. It's a bundle of different kinds of short stories, but man is it good. The author's writing style is so interesting, that it keeps you sucked into the book.
I haven't read The Haunting of Hill House, but I have watched the show (which I've been told departs quite a bit from the novel). It's terrific and I highly recommend it, and if it's even half as good as the original novel, then I'm really looking forward to reading it!
Here's what I read in October Wisdom of crowds Needful things Supernatural unusual sacrifices Well met Memory is souls The jasmine throne The great alone The dating dare by Jayci lee Don't wake up by liz Lawler Dead man's walk prequel to lonesome dove Soul of cinder We free the stars The dragon of jin-sayeng Good luck girls
Funnily enough I've also read Uzumaki this month! Loved it as well, and the Lovecraft influence is also notorious. It's great that you're reading One Piece!
For Shirley Jackson I suggest reading We Have Always Lived In The Castle next. I loved it. As for The Woman in Black I would NOT suggest reading the sequel (written by someone else based on a movie) because it wasn't very good and did read like a hollywood movie but as a book. Did you read Turn of the Screw yet?
I had Haunting of Hill House on my shelf for 2 years. I finally read it and loved it! Also listening to The Woman in Black on audio book and almost done I Am Legend. I had no idea the edition I was reading was only 170 pages of the actual story and the rest was other shirt stories, I guess? I also continued on with ROW. I'm only like 500 pages in, but took a break for some creepy reads!
My main October reads...well, finished ones anyway....the two Warhammer Adventures finales. Both were exciting finales but, to my surprise, it was the fantasy book I preferred. Not that its counterpart was bad, it wasn't, but the fantasy one had some *genuine* surprises in its finale, including an epic battle, some returning characters and making a villain death more tragic than I remotely expected from the story. The other was Folk and Fairytales of Azeroth, which was an interesting book to read because it was part fun WoW lore references but actually had a surprising quantity of life lessons that feel like they could be applied to real life. Also way more queer rep than I expected going into that book lol
What I've read this month. The beginning after the end (a web novel. There is also a webcomic that I have read) It's by an author who goes by TurtleMe. It's his first story and has been on going since 2015 if I remember right. At times you can tell it's an beginner author but the story is still amazing. It's an reincarnation story of a king who lived in a futuristic sosiety but got killed and was born again in a medieval world that has magic. You follow his journey as a kid and through to his teen year while he learns more about the world he has born into. Highly suggest anyone who is into that kinda stuff to read it. The webcomic has amazing art but it does every now and then skip some things or chance some things that happened in the novel. Also Been reading One piece as it comes out.
@@merphynapier42 🤭Oh my! I wasn’t expecting you to respond.Though I’m elated you did.😍I was worried that you might stop making them since no one ever seems to talk about it in the comments, so I’m really glad to hear that you enjoy making them as well.I think most people just don’t realize that there’s something to see. It also took me several squarspace ads to notice that the jokes were there. The page just looks so unassuming and normal unless you pause the video.Anyway, it was really talking to you and this made my day since you’re the only content creator that I watch every video of regardless of topic.I hope you have a great day and that you enjoy making these videos as much as I enjoy watching them 😊🥰
If you havent, would be cool if you read “The Naming, The Riddle, The Crow, The Singing,” “The Pellinor Series” by Alison Crogan. You would love it. Its not horror, though XD just leaving a suggestion here. (:
Omg! I got seen!!! XD - this series is my absolute favorite of ALL TIME, novels. I am 100% certain you will love them, based on the genres and stories in your other reviews. Fantasy, a down to earth subjective narrative, following the Leading character, a young woman who never had anything, tucked away as a slave, hidden behind mountains. Saved, and discovers her true value to the entire system of reality in this universe. She made me realize my own worth, and I would Literally Kill, to see you do a review. anyway, dunno if ya’ll have seen my One Piece comments, but i REALLY appreciate how articulate and wonder-filled your journey has been. Those reviews remind me of how i felt about all those arcs! Ive called it on nearly every reaction to certain moments i knew you would have, which is why im so certain you will love The Pellinor Series; See you in Wano!!!
I was telling my sister about your review of Uzumaki because I thought it sounded so interesting. She responded by asking me what the hell I've been watching and why would I enjoy something so terrifying?
Hello! Once again I followed Merphy's recommendation for reading and I read Jamaica Inn. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of horror, time period and nature (I love Poldark), but I wasn't really sold on Mary Yellan character. How different are other du Maurier books from this one character-wise?
Just noticed you've got The Ember Blade. I haven't seen anyone else who's read it. Have you read any other Chris Wooding stuff? I really recommend The Tales of the Ketty Jay
Merphy, I love your channel. Two things... One, what do you think about audio books? I have a lot of time alone at work and listen to audiobooks for about six hours every night. I have mixed feelings as I would prefer to read paper books but I don't have the time. Two, you might want to talk about Wheel of Time again. With the Amazon series coming, it might be something that people are picking back up so a spoiler-free summary might be appropriate. I've read most of it in the past but could never finish it so I'm listening to the whole series on audiobook over the next few months.
She's mentioned a few times that she loves putting on audiobooks to help her read when she can't get into a book (or might be in a slump, or even just to read along witj)/doesn't have time to physically read books!
Here's the books that I had read: Black Clover - I love that manga (I am really upset that I got banned on th reddit) 😓 The Ember Blade - I thought it's pretty good. The Thousand Orcs by R.A. Salvatore - it's my first Drizzt book. It is part of a series about a dark elf outcast that's doing good deeds and going on adventures. I thought it is really good. Cabal by Clive Baker- there's a movie adaptation of it called DarkBreed. It tells a story about a guy that having nightmares about this place where monsters and accused for serial murders that he didn't admitted, but he have to find the place from his nightmares and it has turned out to be real. And his girlfriend went looking for him. Lessons Never learned - It's the sequel to Belongs Razor's Edge, I DNF'ed that one and I don't like the direction where it's going to. I am reading Skullsinger right now. It is about the farmer has chosen by Hades and he has kill five people in order to bring down the apocalypse.
@@sircheese288last week I made a theory based on a leaks before the chapter came out. I feels like completely idiot when I tweeted about it on tweeted about it after I replied to the messages. I am being careful with leaks on Twitter right now. I don't known they will forgive me on BlackClover subreddit. 😓
