Every Pakistani should stop talking about cultural similarities with India. There are none now. Indian culture is progressive and aspirational whereas Pakistan has a regressive culture and a closed society.

It's the grapevine here and there making headlines because if the location we all share and some low tier resources just take those highlights and spread them with no sense of responsibility. Sir , Pakistan is operating correctly as per design, barring ups & downs. Intent was always to be laser-focused on subduing Hindus. Structure of choice was feudal-militaristic. Economic plan of choice was to extract funds from rich Western & Arab countries based on strategic location. India-Pakistan relations are, in fact, in their normal, natural state. I expect they will become even more honest as time goes by. Pakistan attitude has been very clear from day one . Here it is not a surprise to see women driving trucks, public transport or work on forklifts, earthmovers and it isn't even a news. Our community has a major leadership problem and parts of the religion are very outdated and cannot be applied in the 21st century. Muslims need to realize that the glory days of Islamic Empires are over. Everything that happened in the past was a product of its time. I think the community needs more people to realize this bitter truth and to embrace change. My only advice to the crazy section of Hindus (all Hindus I've met are very nice people) is to at least not spook moderate, reasonable Muslims into that batch and to encourage them to speak out. Great summary and a travel blog! I however disagree with some points you raise, my conclusion after meeting many Pakistanis in Singapore US and UK 1. Elitism: The people i have met are all from extremely privileged background, mostly kids of Army officers, Bureaucrats or defence contractors, Indian diaspora is all about merit. Pakistani people simply disown the poverty in their own country 2 Education: Pakistani are brainwashed by their education system, i have seen lack of critical thinking and a narrative of falsehood even in the foreign educated people 3. Gender bias this is very deep routed 4. Religious rigidity; Pakistani are very stiff and rigid about religion and discussions around it, this is in complete contrast in India where such discussions are common in educated people

To be honest, I understand what you are saying, I also wish to visit Sindh someday as my maternal ancestors were from there, they left Sindh 500 yrs ago due to religious persecution. But it's definitely not going to happen soon. Pakistan itni jaldi sudharne nahi waala. Two nation theory hawwa me nahi bani thi. There will be no talks until Pakistan stops funding and nurturing terrorists. Can't compromise our brothers in Army for mere tourism. Nuclear tests might not have happened in our time, but we have witnessed the Mumbai, Uri, and Pathankot attacks. Not just witnessed we have lost our family members and friends in those attacks. We know how many anti-India activities are funded by ISI within India. India's economic growth shows what we want as a nation, our actions and results show where we have put in our efforts and same goes with Pakistan. It's been in last 8 yrs that we didn't face any major bomb blast. We know how hard our agencies are working to protect the citizen. And quite the opposite is happening on the other side of the border. There is no comparison btw India and Pakistan. And I am saying all this to convey that no it's not mere politics which is keeping the issues alive. Your school books are enough to show what you people have been teaching your kids about other communities, specifically Hindus. The problem runs deep.

I have been waiting for this much promised episode on your Indian tour and am delighted to hear your thoughtful analysis. Your observations as an outsider gave a different perspective to many things. I never thought of the new infrastructures being built in the terms of maximum benefit for the maximum number of people simply because it didn't strike me that there was any other way of doing it! The elite centric infrastructure development in Pakistan was a surprising piece of information. I think in India we are now witnessing a greater democratization among the population with the result that utilities like airports which were more exclusive just a decade earlier, are being used by a larger cross section of the society. The Bangalore airport, for eg, is widely used by migrant labourers travelling to and fro to Guwahati. They say it makes more sense to spend more on flight tickets than to lose a couple of days of extra wages which a train journey would entail. On top of that is the feeling of pride in the journey as well as the admiration from their native village. I would have thought that women participation in construction activity would be low because what we see in most cities is construction work being carried out by migrant workers. In the Southern States, migrant workers are generally male and leave their families behind in their native villages. When they do migrate with families, the women seem to take up work as domestic helps. Women from the lower economic strata of the richer southern States, generally prefer not to take up domestic help jobs and instead prefer to work in factories or in the housekeeping departments (the surprising fact is that domestic help wages might actually be higher if you are doing multiple households but that job is considered low dignity). You are right about education. Over the years you are seeing a rapid decrease in the number of school age kids roaming around during school hours. It used to be distressing to see the sheer number of migrant labourers' children not receiving an education in the Delhi NCR region in the early 2000s. The free education, free school meals, free books and uniforms which most States provide acts as an added incentive to keep the children in school. You are right about the infrastructure development that is taking place. Most of our cities are now dug up with new metro and road constructions coming up. Most of the cities are right now unlivable but once the metros are up and running and the roads are functional, the quality of life would definitely go up. Sadly the pace of construction is not anywhere close to what we would like since all too often the work would be brought to a halt because of stay orders and disputes. Democracy always takes more time than autocracy!

Hard to get thinkers in Pakistan. Really great and informative podcast regarding India. A healthy discussion is always soothing for people across borders. Though I dont believe in any friendship with Pakistan due to the bitter experiences but I do advocate that our neighbours should also progress to make this SE Asia prosper.

We also wants peace. But it's not possible due to the mindset of the Pakistani army establishment. They are the main culprits. Because their existence is due to India enemity.
