What I use to make analogue video and glitch art (studio tour and rig rundown)

Over the past few weeks I've been working hard to put together a more fixed space for my analogue video gear, and make it as quick and easy as possible to make stuff. As part of that I've been exploring different configurations, switches, patch bays and the like, and I thought that this explanation might be useful to other folks who are interested in the world of analogue video or glitch art. Here's a tour of my video rig. I post all of the music I make, including WAV stems; sample packs; Dirtywave M8 song bundles; collections of video textures; early access to videos; and a whole pile of other stuff on Patreon. I know I know, I hate doing this as well, but if you like what I do and want to get more of it, while also helping me offset some of my ludicrous gear purchases, this is the best place to do it:
www.patreon.com/allmyfriendsaresynths
If you just want to hang out and chat with me or other (nice) folks, drop by the Discord: discord.gg/7Q68pUKHAq
If you just want individual sample packs or downloads of video footage to use in your own projects, get them on Gumroad here: gumroad.com/allmyfriends
If you're in the market for new gear, my favourite place to find new and interesting synthesizers and other electronic music gear is Signal Sounds. They are based in Glasgow, but ship all over the place and often have stuff nobody else does. Find them at www.signalsounds.com/
If you're in the US and shop at Perfect Circuit, you can click through to see what they have in stock just now through my custom link. I get a small commission for any purchases made, which keeps me stocked up with whisky and beard oil. link.perfectcircuit.com/t/v1/8-12626-263232-9759?website=371439
and a whole pile of other stuff...

The first half of the video is actually the most relevant for me even though you said it might be kind of boring. I'm at that initial purchasing stage and I'm trying to stay away from expensive stuff first off. The reverse camera is definitely something I'm going to go through and get a bunch of because it looks dead useful for being able to do feedbacks really easy. Or just dedicated camera with enough quality. Thanks for really fantastic video I really appreciate it

Thanks to you I decided to get into analog video for visuals for my electronic music. Where I live the garage company does bulk pickup days where they take almost anything. My neighbors were tossing out a Magnavox CRT TV. It's a 20 inch from 2005. On the back it has an F connector and on the front composit video, 1 analog audio, and headphones out. The buttons on the front aren't working right. But I works great with my universe remote. My blu-ray player has composit video and analog audio out. So I tried it a Ghostbusters DVD for something suitably old school. The video and audio both work. I like old school audio and video formats. I have a laser disc player. I have been meaning to get a VHS VCR. I keep seeing them at thrift (charity) shops. I should get one while they are still available. I live in Las Vegas. So I want to get an old video camera to record lofi video of all the lights at the casinos. Running that through a circuit bent video processor would be really nice. If there are bulk trash days in your area; go take a look at what people are tossing out. You might get a nice score like I did.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Sorry for the delay in replying. I've had a bunch of life happening and just catching up now. I am glad and pleased that my ramblings inspired you to try things out in the analogue visual world. It's full of delight and wonders. Unfortunately we don't have too many bulk trash situations around here, and the weather is so awful that any time I've seen a CRT out on the street it's already been trashed. I've managed to pick up some good deals though... just a matter of convincing my pals to give me a lift to strange places ha.

Ive had one laying around from my vjing days, which stopped for me around 2013, but during the last year ive been exploring methods to record video feedback/glitch and had ignored a useful tool there. Also, glad you mentioned the colour corrector, thts the missing piece in my current setup, everytine i watch one on ebay ive let it go being unsire of id use it... they keep going up in price too 😂. Also thanks for discussing the digital timebase corrector, ive had similar problems which ive solved by adding /rearranging the kit, but hadnt stopped to consider the actual issue. Thanks so much for this video. I’ve just ordered an Erogenous Tones Structure, Syntonie CVD 001, and Edirol V4-EX, looking forward to exploring glitchy video art, to complement my modular and experimental guitar/drone music. I have a question - I’m dreaming up an installation where I have at least four different video outputs. Ideally, I would have it distributed from my MacBook via Resolume, through independent signal processing pathways (I have watched Yovozol’s video on Resolume, though he has just one layered output). Just trying to figure how to have four or more different videos playing, with some degree of central control. Any suggestions short of running four different USB sticks, through some sort of downscaler and into my different units? Pardon any confusion, I’m new to this analogue video bizness!

This is amazing. Have been harvesting old CRT TVs all summer off freebie online groups etc, just working out how to split a single image onto them like a video wall in a loop. Am sending it from a laptop so far and have tested VLC splitting it onto digital monitors, Hoping same principle works from the laptop to the hdmi outs and then hdmi to UF/scart adaptors to get on the CRT TVs. That reversal camera looks awesome.

Nice one! Look up the Kramer distribution switch thingies. They are fairly cheap and do what you're describing in a really neat way. The wee camera I am using is just a car reversal thing I got off aliexpress for about 3GBP. There's loads of them available, and they take regular DC power - 9-24v or something ridiculous. @StephenMcLeod
@StephenMcLeod Год назад
It depends what you're wanting to do I guess. For digital display or capture you will need some kind of tbc most likely. For analogue display you won't. So if you're filming CRT TVs you'll be golden. The Edirol mixers have TBCs in them but they aren't great. You still get lots of drop outs.

@StephenMcLeod
@StephenMcLeod 2 года назад
Hey, thanks for watching! I was really interested in a modular video setup, but having gone down the modular route for music, it's not something I'm pursuing. It's too expensive, there isn't enough of a range of modules, and you can get interesting effects with other gear for far cheaper, IMHO! Camera recommendations... I don't really. I think the key with feedback is to put different devices in the chain though, so any old camera running through a mixer with some effects will start to really generate some cool stuff. You should also maybe look at the Waaave Pool video synth/processor things, as they are relatively cheap and awesome.

Hey sweet tour, super cool. I am looking to create a surveillance camera style set-up for an exhibition I am doing soon and I was thinking about getting a reversing camera to do this. My problem is the delivery time for Ali Express and that a lot of the cameras I have been looking at include the reversing sensor box (if that makes sense). Did your camera start with this box on the preview or not? Thanks
@StephenMcLeod
@StephenMcLeod Год назад
None of my cameras had the preview overlay! You should be able to find a bunch of them without if you look around. You might find a local supplier that imports them and will have stock already, but they will be more expensive - so be aware of that.

Appreciate this video and appreciate you. I get that this would be a kind of boring thing to answer in your video but for someone looking to build a rig like this - in what order might you recommend getting this type of gear? I’m guessing the basics would be a few sources, a mixer and a display or capture, with the circuit bent stuff etc coming later? I should probably go ask this on the forum you mention…
@StephenMcLeod
@StephenMcLeod Год назад
Oh hey! Sorry that I missed your comment. Honestly, I would recommend hunting out a CRT TV first. Any cheap one you can find. Folks are often giving them away if you'll drive to pick them up. You can use a cheap HDMI player from Amazon, or output your laptop via an HDMI to composite box for sources... then get some kind of effects box to stick in the signal flow. There are looads of good options, such as the Waaave Pool from Andrei Jay if you want to stay in the digital realm and make things simpler. Though I believe finding the right Raspberry Pi is tricky at the mo due to chip shortages. Have a look at Yovozol's channel on here too, as they have a whole host of good videos on the topic.

Hey thanks! I have, but the cost of the Eurorack stuff is so high once you factor in the case, power supply, and the modules themselves. Especially since LZX is one of the few manufacturers around. I'm deep in the music Euro rabbit hole and didn't want to open another can of worms haha.

Great video. Fergusons were very popular in the 80s and were owned at one stage by Thorn EMI if my memory is right? Ferguson Videostars were popular in the UK when people used to rent TV & Video from the likes of radio Rentals. I remember my parents hiring Ferguson gear. But they couldn't really compete with the Japanese (Ferguson, not my parents) and were flogged off to French company Thomson (again Ferguson, although...). I think your model is either a rebadged Thomson or Dixons Store Group machine, presumably built for transferring VHS to DVD? You do realise that valuable funds set aside for synths may well be used elsewhere.
@StephenMcLeod

Thanks for the info! I thought they looked similar to a Bush model I found. I wonder if they were used as a brand for a few different manufacturers.
