I have a Worksharp but its too easy to wreck a blade in my opinion. Sticking to my Sharpmaker and Lansky rods.

I like the self control of the guided $50 work sharp and the touch up of the lansky turn box.

Invest in a good set of Japanese water stones. nothing will get a knife sharper! Also you should say how high a grit you sharpen edges. Razor edge is very vague

I have the Worksharp belt sharpener Ken Onion edition, a bit pricey but one of the best purchases I have done. I have already sharpened +30 knives with it

The added benefit to the WorkSharp with grinding attachment is that you can put as much or as little (of a much stronger) "convex" edge as you desire. Once you get good at it, there isn't a sharpener out there that can beat it. But it does take practice to get good at it. All the rest of the sharpeners are going to be putting a hallow grind (wheel sharpeners) or a V-Grind (stones). The downside to putting a convex grind using the belts is when you want to field sharpen, you are then re-profiling your convex edge to a V-edge, unless you go with a wider angle and create a secondary bevel.
@bc81
@bc81 5 лет назад
There is very much a difference to a V grind compared to a scandi. Stones are perfect for that. Plus with practice you can put the best convex using stones. What grit dose the Worksharp belts go upto. I've been free hand sharpening for about 30 years now. Nothing gets a better working edge on both scandi and convex than a 6000 grit Japanese water stone

I went to Bass Pro and bought a Workshop field sharpener last night. I am impressed. I've used t to repair two blades that my Sharp Maker couldn't fix. Good stuff.

I have the regular work sharp knife and tool sharpener and I love it. Yes it would convex the edge but the convenience is what I want now that I'm older. 2 mins and I can sharpen my PM2 and all my kitchen knives.

The work sharp guided field sharpener is my go to for 99% of my sharpening. I have a very very fine arkansas stone if I need to go any keener. I bought the GFS on your recommendation too, hasn't ever let me down. Last summer I chipped out my fiskars hatchet on some nails that were embedded in the wood I split up for the camp fire. I took the chips out and got it hair shaving sharp again in less than 15 minutes on the GFS. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great do it all option, and for $30 it can't be beat.

Thanks Aaron! I actually have the Work sharp field sharpeners(As per your reviews) in my Keep one in my day /hike pack, GHB, And in my multi-day systems. And the Electric Work Sharp in my gear room for my bigger blades.

Once again, you agree with me. Similar experiences tend to produce similar solutions. I don't have the worksharp guided tool, still use a four sided diamond brick I bought ~20 years ago and just lock on to the workbench. Seldom use that these days, I have a Worksharp Ken Onion now. :) The place where the KO belt sharpener really shines is that you always get a convex edge. Even on cheaper knives, these edges are sharper and last longer. Pocket knife has to be really small for me to do things manually now - except for the knives I see that only really need a bit of touch up and the owner doesn't understand that.

I have the Worksharp Field Sharpener that I bought a couple of years ago, and I take that everywhere with me hiking, camping and EDC if I take my pack. It's great. Other than that I kick it pretty old school. I have a large, 10" long, 1" diameter monster ceramic rod that I love, and a very large leather strop that is about 6" wide and 24" long. I also have several wetstones of different grits. Not so great for beginners but it great especially if you have larger blades that you need to sharpen and know how to hold an angle...

Cool video, I like the variety of systems mentioned and the fact you touched on some that you had moved past. Your comment about "most of us don't even have a collection worth $400" made me laugh...I remember when I used to think like that haha!

I got the WS guided sharpener after your review and I love it, I do return to my lansky set's often when I'm frustrated with the edge off the WS, (still practicing using a non guided angle like the lansky), I returned the Ken Onion because it's not as good for just your EDC blades, I've used the original one (borrowed) and it's way better for pocket knives, the KO's whole worth is the grinder attachment and that's a rip-off, I wish WS would make a powered grinder stand alone that's what everyone mainly likes about the KO'S (prepared mind101😜) thanks for the review of what you use, these kind of videos are a big help to those of us who are loyal followers and really want to know what our favorite Host is using to keep the tools you review and keep in good condition, like PM101 says "don't let your knife get that dull to begin with!" 😁

Hiking i have used the Lansky Quick Fix Pocket Sharpener and now use the Outdoor Edge SharpX. Have the WS field sharpener in my car camping kit and use the Ken Onion WS at home and i am still trying to learn how to use that well.

The WSKOKGA is a pretty amazing system. I've been without a 2x72 grinder for a while, and WorkSharp got me everything I missed. Great belt abrasives, speed control, convex grinding, nothing to get in the way when sharpening around weird shapes or finger guards or whatever. It' not going to make knives, but it'll do everything else at less than half the price of competitive systems like the Kalamazoo or Grizzly. I do still love the Sharpmaker, though. Can't wait to see what angles are available on the new GalleyV system...

Good video as always mate 😁 i always freehand on water stones usually a shapton glass 220 then naniwa professional 400-1000-3000-5000. In the field either a dc4 or the double stone from spyderco or if coarser work needed i have a eze lap diamond file set that works very good and weighs next too nothing

What a coincidence. My birthday is in 2 days... pretty sure that my adult children have either a Ken Onion Work Sharp or a KME system coming my way. They were the only things I left in my wishlist all year. A friend of mine put a small scandivex edge on my Jakaripuko for me with his Ken Onion . Made all the difference... that factory scandi was rolling badly. Used it several times since... no rolling at all. The Ken Onion will be a great addition to the other Worksharp sharpeners I use (same as you have shown... Guided System and Field Sharpener).

I'm a knife maker and I agree that the Ken Onion WorkSharp with the Blade Grinding attachment is the best out there for a powered sharpener. The cost for the unit is around $130 and the attachment is around $70 but well worth the investment. I do much of my sharpening with my 2X72 grinder but finish sharpening is done on the Ken Onion. Also when I do knife shows I always take it with me to sharpen other knives for customers and other knife makers.

By no means are these for the people who want a pretty, a pretty, too sharp kind of edge. Work sharp has made several incredible products for EVERYBODY. If you just want a good, pretty sharp knife, worksharp has something for you. All the options, I am very proud of worksharp for what they have done in the past 2 or 3 years.

Got both the field sharpener and guided work sharp based off your reviews and already had the Smiths prior to you reviewing it. I agree with pretty much everything you said, haha. When i have my own house, rather than an apartment, i definitely will look into powered grinders, probably a Work Sharp. @gideonstactical Would love to see a video where you talk about sharpeneing hatchets and axes. I feel much more confident with knives than with hatchets at this point.

Your reviews right on point. After wasting tons of money and ruining good knives the worksharp field sharpener is best hands down. Eventually I’ll drop the $ on the Ken Onion but for $30 the field sharpener is great buy

Thanks for the video. I bought the Work Sharp guided system based your review a few years ago. It’s great for beginners. I learned to get better. I wanted to get their powered sharper but I heard it puts a convex grind on everything and it may dull the tip if you not careful. Any opinions on that?

I've been using the field sharpener for a few years. I use a couple of Rat 2's for work and it seems like I kind of screw up the tips. How do you get a tip consistent with the rest of the edge?

I like diamond stones with water first ,next ceramics with oil. Finish with strop , and yes , I use three different stropping from fine to xxx fine to finish. Be careful with work sharp. Ditch all the guides. Especially with 420hc. Couple of my buddies went to town with work sharp and totally changed profiles😬. Love the channel 🇺🇸🔪

Kind of an off topic question but googling hasn't yielded any results so figured I'd try here and see if someone knows the answer. The other day I was mindlessly flipping my Rat 2 open and closed when, after quite a few times, I noticed the blade wasn't deploying all the way to lock up. So I closed it and tried to open it again and it was very stiff. I could get it all the way to lock up but, again, it felt very stiff. So a few days later I grab it and give the thumbstud a flick and it flies open. My closest guess is the friction from repeated opening caused the pivot system to heat up and fail? Anyone else have this problem or a solution? Maybe I just need to lube it up?
@I0nlyRunFactory
@I0nlyRunFactory 5 лет назад
The rat2 comes apart and goes back together real easy. Take it apart, clean it out, oil the pivot and washers, put it back together and she'll give you nice action for a nice long time before you gotta do it again.
@Dhayes94
@Dhayes94 5 лет назад
@@I0nlyRunFactory ok I'll do that! What type of oil do you use? I honestly haven't done much knife maintenance to my folders since they only receive light use and I've never put oil on them before.
@I0nlyRunFactory
@I0nlyRunFactory 5 лет назад
@@Dhayes94 I just use regular Mineral Oil (USP) that you would find at your grocery store or pharmacy. Usually marketed as a lubricant/laxative >> www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Mineral-Oil-Intestinal-Lubricant-16-Oz/44807472 for example. It isn't the "best" oil to use but its not toxic and works well enough. There are smoother lubricants out there like KPL (knifepivotlube.com/ ) but you can get the mineral oil for like $2 and in a bottle 10x the size. Also things like KPL aren't certified Food Safe (which I think is relevant for a pocket knife because I cut food with mine sometimes) but on their site they claim they use no toxic ingredients so its up to you. TLDR; Mineral Oil for cheap suckers (me) Knive Pivot Lube for the real enthusiasts (Nick Shabazz)

Why do you need all that to sharpen a knife?! That motorized thing looks more for making knives, not sharpening them😂 A $2.99 stone from Harbor Freight and any old piece of leather or even a piece of sandpaper will put a razor edge on a knife. Yay for American junk consumerism!
