I'm so glad to find a new posting from you this morning. I enjoy your informal chats. I am 78 and was a professional contra-bassist for 38 years, but a health setback forced my retirement. I gave my instrument to a nice young fellow in one of the orchestras with which I was associated who was playing a borrowed instrument and I have no regrets about that. Having recovered much of my strength I bought a very inexpensive 'cello about a year and a half ago, and it has been much more joyful than anything else I have ever played. I don't care at all for flash-&-dazzle technical pieces, but heart-breakingly beautiful melodies from past decades are what I'm going for. Thank you, Billy, for all you do. You are truly an inspiration. 🙂👍

Hello, I need your help , can I ask you a favor ( as a left-hander)can you play your cello on your right shoulder with your with hand in minus 1st position on the C string and tell me if it touches the pegs please. I cannot play the tradition way and want to know before I purchase. I stop violin ( traditional) at grade 6 ad want to take up cello. Thank you.

that was the biggest change for me was the sound I like in a cello. I prefer an earthy and dark sound now.

I agree about hearing yourself. I’m not sure how much it correlates with taking a break but it does make sense. Taking breaks have helped me numerous times so I know that it’s good. But, however it happens, hearing how you ACTUALLY sound WHILE you are playing is HUGE. Like, when you hear the recording, it should basically sound the same as what you heard when you were playing. It means that your active focus and evaluative powers are set on the sound you’re making, as opposed to on the techniques required to execute something. Also about starting “late” one of the best pros I know started when he was 15 playing in high school as a beginner. So… practice right, practice enough, practice healthy, get a good teacher, you can sound great and really play.

It's funny, I've recently come to the same conclusions in my journey. I went back to Suzuki book 1 with my teacher, and am working hard on quality sound, and getting my left hand to function better, with more strength on pinki/ring finger, but with less "harsh grip" on the neck. I do need to get my cello into the Luthier though to adjust the bridge to help the strings to be easier to press down.

@@sexymanicou3403You keep asking this everywhere, and everyone keeps telling you to just play it the regular way. All cellists need dexterity in both hands to play the cello. Do not use left-handedness to excuse cello playing. All left-handed people play cello the regular way. You can keep asking, and you will keep getting the same response. From everyone.

Thanks for sharing your amazing journey and tips and advice on how your mind and your thoughts changed over time in your Cello journey! I also had similar experience too recently and then taking a break was the big one haha. I also had a similar mindset that I would lose all the things I'd learned over 1 year and all the hours of practice would go to waste. But When I came back after a month's break (because I was too busy with work and other projects.) I could hear what I was playing and it's like I finally opened my ears up and heard in a brand new way!!! It's funny how sometimes we're like, yeah I'm listening. But you actually couldn't "really" hear the sound you were producing out of your cello. (But I did feel a bit that my left hand and fingers were getting rusting and lost some strength. My fingers were like noodles lol. But I regained the strength after practicing every day for 3 weeks to a month. So all good.)The key is to balance and has an open mind and be willing to experiment and not be afraid to change and try out different approaches. I can't wait to try out some new cellos too! I still have my baby with me! My cello is almost 2 years old lol. Keep up the amazing work, Billy, and don't stop motivating and inspiring us! Really love what you create and share with all of us cello lovers and cellists!

@@sexymanicou3403 Hello, Thanks for asking. I was wondering if you wanted to ask Billy or adult cello? But if you are asking me then If you were to play with the cello on the right side of your shoulder since you are (left-handed), I don't think it really matters if you are left or right-handed when it comes to the cello. It would be easier to keep it the same way where you have the cello on your left shoulder instead of the right shoulder. But not saying it's impossible! You would have to change the arrangement of each string. Since for traditional playing, the C string is there furthest from us. So in order to play with it with the cello on your right shoulder. You would need to swap and change your c string all the way to the left. So that when you're pressing down the strings. From left to right it would be C G D A. (Instead of the other way around. Traditionally it's supposed to be A D G C, From left to right.) And also you would need to learn a new pattern since you're mirroring everything to the opposite. Those are my thoughts. But feel free to research more about playing the cello on your right shoulder and see what else you can find out and learn about it. I hope this was helpful to you! Thanks again!

@@victoriayuart Thanks, I do not have a cello and I insist on going through with the idea and I have done all research that is available as I am left handed and my options are between what I mentioned and a left handed, before ordering. There is no violin/string shop where I am. Hence me asking if you place the cello on your right should to us your right hand a fingering hand and left to bow: if the right hand will touch the peg ie. in 1st or -1st position on the cello hance me asking on 'youtube,' If you can try me and tell it will be verry thankful, if you place the cello on your right should to us your right hand a fingering hand and left to bow: if the right hand will touch the peg.

@@sexymanicou3403 You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help. The answer to your question there is: Yes if the cello is leaning on your right shoulder. Then your fingering hand is your (Right hand) And your bowing hand will be your (Left hand) I hope that answered your question.

@@victoriayuart Well yes but, if you have tried it, will you right hand (note fingering hand) touch the 'peg' when playing ie in 1 position or 0 position on the C string on the neck ( eight hand)

Ive only been playing for a little over two years (already had a significant amount of musicality training) but the most important skill I need is sight reading. I play in a church orchestra (so in reality there isn't much of the music where the audience can hear my sound quality) but being able to quickly read a piece on a Wednesday (even in a key I've never played, and certainly don't practice) and being able to decide how I'm going to play that piece on real time (skipping some arpeggios and shifts and that sort 😉). My musicality for whole/half/quarters is pretty good. My string crossings and arpeggios are rough, but no one can really hear that. Totally different goals for me. I want to get better, I want to sound better, but ultimately, I want to blend with my orchestra and worship the LORD.

Yeah, playing for church definitely has its own joys and challenges. The music at my church died, so I volunteered to get something going again. Trouble is, I'm primarily a wind player, so playing everything on my harp while singing with other singers has been quite the uphill battle. Also the first time I've been running a group of musicians, and the people and music organization skills have been a crashcourse as well. We don't do perfectly, but I'm firmly of the belief that live music is really important in worshiping God, and that He values our efforts on His behalf, no matter how imperfect. And we're doing a lot better now than we were last year. I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing. Singing while sitting playing a harp is much harder to get good tone and good projection than when standing. And due to the makeup and tiny size of the group, I'm having to sing very low in my vocal range to keep it easy to sing for others. Which means I'm singing on top of the lower break in my voice too much of the time, which again makes it really hard to sing well. Playing harp at the same time is also leading to my needing to get things very close to memorized to make it work because I can't read lyrics, chords and melody and watch my fingers all at once. It takes forever to learn a new song. I have to watch my expectations, and remind myself that perfection isn't the object here, and being overly perfectionistic will make people unhappy and potentially drive them away, which doesn't serve God or the church. Not to mention burning myself out and making me miserable since I'm not satisfied with my own singing and playing. But I still want to be better. What I need is help with that. So: up next after Easter - I'm taking some voice lessons. I can work on myself, and then maybe I'll know how to better work with singers, as well as how to do the awkward vocal stuff I'm now needing to do. If I also wind up learning to sing some really pretty soprano stuff I've kind of wanted to do for years or joining a really good choir where my ability to sing high is an asset... well why not?

Good morning. Yesterday I had my first cello lesson. I am 38 years old. I have played the mandolin for ten years and I have been singing for years. I already tried the violin but it didn't work at all physically. And then the very high pitched sound didn't touch me. Yesterday the teacher I started with told me several things and I wanted to share to find out your opinion. 1. It is not impossible to acquire a very good level if I work regularly. 2. To make a vibrato i will have to work for two years before getting there. What do you think ? THANKS
