I think alphebetizing and organizing books would be my favorite part of working in a bookstore. Idk why but whenever I get bored or sad I just reorganize my shelves. I love looking through all of them. Great video! ❤
I worked in a bookstore last month too. The buyers really think we read all the books there. Sure. And once someone said, I don't know the author or the title of the. book, but can you help me? And I was like: You're kiddig right?
Hi Daisy! I'm laughing out loud - I worked in a grocery store, and people setting stuff down randomly as opposed to giving it to you is definitely a relateable struggle! Also, I love your ladder for your bookshelf, such beauty and the beast vibes 😄
As someone who works as an extra in a bookstore, all of this is so relatable. The best thing is when someone gives me a super vague description of a book but I manage to figure out what they're talking about anyway. I feel like some sort of witch hahaha
Gold stars for all! I have been guilty in assuming that people in book stores are walking encyclopedias That's until I worked at BT Games and people use to get angry with me because I don't know the story line of some game that was released ten years ago.
Girl, you are on fleek with everything you say. I too used to work at a bookstore, and more often than not I would have every 5th customer asked me where the bathroom was. If I had a quarter for every time I heard that I wouldn't work at a bookstore anymore!
Lol. Exactly! I worked in a bookstore and they got so upset that I couldn't place that one book they heard of or loved. Lol. I loved working in a bookstore though. You nailed it. Finding or suggesting a book to someone is an amazing feeling.
Laugh out loud, im being serious and all this time i thought that a book clerk was well versed in all types of literature. Well that's a relief that you guys are not, now I can walk into a book store with out felling so damn alone. Best wishes from los angeles, cali.
I used to own a smallish bookshop... oh, the stories. Like the woman who wanted to return a book but she hadn't bought it at my store. I knew she hadn't because it had never been in my computer system, but she was insistent that she had. Some people can't be helped...
Oh my God yes... I worked at Chapter for 3 years and it was crazy some of the questions I was asked. "could you please help find the book with a girl on the cover?" what?! "I'm looking for a red book with a man and a women on the cover, and it is a romance"... So almost every romance book ever? I know the struggle. I miss that job.
My favourite description given while working in a bookshop: "I'm looking for a book for my grandson. It's about a train... at one point there was something blocking the tracks and everyone got worried..." Thomas The Tank Engine?? No. It turned out to be The Railway Children!
Relatable 😂😂👏🏻 I worked 5 years at a bookstore at the airport. My store was placed vis-a-vis a kiosk, selling food, drinks, magazines and whatnot. I sold books. BUT STILL I got people in to my TINY TINY STORE with only shelves and a small counter asking “Do you have hot dogs?” .......”sorry I’m ALL OUT OF THOSE” 😐
Another thing I would add is, when you want a recommendation for someone else, find out what they read! One of the worst things is when someone comes up to me and is like: "I need a book for my grandmother, what do you recommend" and they don't know what genre she reads or what books she read lately that she enjoyed. They think that "I need a book for a 60-year-old lady" is specific enough. I don't know your grandmother, people! Also, saying that she reads "pretty much everything" is not helpful either. First of all, very few people read everything. Based on that, I could recommend The Three-Body Problem, A Game of Thrones or The Mediator series for your grandma. Oh and this car manual is really compelling. Are you positive she reads everything? I actually really want to recommend something that you or your grandmother or anothe family member or a friend will enjoy. I care to the point that if you don't give me the required information, I will make you choose at least a genre to go for, so I could tell myself that if your grandmother won't like the book, it's your fault for choosing the wrong genre. It's not like I will ever know if your grandma enjoyed the book, but I'm weird like that. I'm also paranoid that your grandma will hunt me down and yell at me for recommending a wrong book for her :). No, seriously, if you want a book for someone else, find out at least what genre they read, ideally one or two books they've read lately and enjoyed. Are you seriously telling me there's no way for you to start talking about books with them? Then maybe buy them a sweater. Oh, wait. You would have to figure out their size they wear, wouldn't you.
Dear DaisyZanel... this is a hilarious video; I can relate! But mostly I want you to know that I have been singing your title music to myself all day and driving my dog mad.
When I worked at a bookstore, my friend got a customer who held onto a book for 2 years and never read it and wanted to return it. I give her credit that she had the receipt but the return policy is 2 weeks. My friend calmly explained that to her and got yelled at. She calmly said, I'm really sorry but I'm just doing my job. It's company policy and I can't go against that. The woman threw the book at my friend's face and stormed out. She could've just sold it online if she really didn't want it. The customer isn't always right and is too self entitled if you ask me.
nicely done... I am from customer service and have worked in the retail industry (although not in a bookstore, my bad luck {being serious}). I agree with all the points you mentioned in the VLOG. Especially the mythical mindreader thingy!
hello so interesting. There is a word that I don"t understand "obviously ...... is not the best part of the job (2.35) can you write me down the word missing ?
Omg YES! I'm currently working at a bookstore, and have been for almost 2 years, and I can relate to ALL these things! Like that one blue book they read in 1994 was a little to accurate! Seriously, I have had multiple people ask me literally "I don't know what it was called or who the author was, but it sounded really good! I think it was [insert random colour here] on the cover" haha
oh yes, everything. I've worked more than 4 years in few bookshops and these things are on daily basis everywhere :D now I work in two-storey bookshop (? I think, ground floor and 1st floor) and thank you, dear customers, to be mad at me if I can't find there the LAST copy of random book when you often put books randomly everywhere. and no, I have no idea what book you saw 6 months ago at this table. :D but yes, it is the best to recommend someone a book and they love it ♥
OMG so relatable... I worked in a bookstore until recently and you name almost everything that annoyed me about customers :D But I agree with your last point also... it outhweights everything bad.
Yeah I think this might help actually! I am 16 years old, and I have been going to Barnes and noble for a while now, and I am thinking about working there! I really enjoy the books, and what is simple is that I am able to look for the books I really need some times! I really never had a job before in my life, and I was hoping if you have any advice for me before I get my very first job!
I work as a librarian and I agree with everything you said. As it seem to be, the jobs are pretty much the same, we just loan the books and you sell. :D
Why is it me being a slow reader I can only read 12 books a month as far as I know I just started reading again last yr and from time to time all I can do is buy 20 books a month I’m going to have to blind fold myself every time I go buy books I’m shops lol, I mean I can’t stop freaking buying books I’m addicted to thick books how the hell am I going to manage to get throught all my book I mean I’m 40 yr old, I don’t collect books I buy them and read them.
Good show. I can see your point. I have been buying books for over 60 years. I have dealt with many book sellers in many towns and cities. I have found that the older booksellers knew most of the books they sold. And they could recommend some good books if you mentioned the genre. The smaller the bookshop, the better the owner knew his books. Even today, in the used bookshops, the owner often knows the books we mention and he can just pick it up! In the larger shops , the paid employees are generally not knowledgeable about the books they sell. Most of them appear to be indifferent probably because they do not intend to be selling books life long. I would say people working in bookshops should love books in the first place, live books and dream books. They should specialise in some genres, and know some great books and famous characters. That Anna Anna somebody could have been Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. How could anyone in any bookstore in the US say she did not know Atticus Finch, even if she did not know Harper Lee? Some characters are more famous than the authors! ( This of course is not likely, as To Kill A Mocking Bird is required reading in high schools). There are of course too many books and too many characters nowadays, who have a short life. But the characters in the old classics still live. Who can forget a Tess or Micawber or Pip or Giles Winterborne or Mr.Gradgrind and Sissy Jupe or Michael Henchard? Such old characters do not die. When one works in a bookshop, and is given charge of fiction/classics, she should learn a few of these things. Can we think of a doctor who cannot remember his medicines? But I understand. You only worked for a year! Every occupation has its hazards, as also its hilarious side! This is a nice video.
I second a lot of these things, as I worked at and then managed a book store for a number of years... working retail in general is quite taxing and interesting/entertaining, lolololololol....
I'm working in a bookstore and I can so relate 😂 "I'm looking for a blue book it also has a black piano key on it" "Do you copy things?" "Have you read all these books?" But it is the best job even if some people are really weird 😂
Yeah, man, everyone expects you to have read every single book in the store if you work there, as if you have nothing better to do with your life. One lady got so angry with me that I hadn't read a book she wanted information on that she just shouted "You guys WORK here! It's your JOB to read these books so if customers have questions about them, you can answer them!" To which I replied "You know where you can get reviews on every book in the world? GOOGLE!"
How to prove you dont read BOOKS or know who to Navigate a bookstore but MIGHT POSSIBLY fall on a book you MAY like, but make you feel uncomfortable...
Not by a long-shot. But thank you for your reply. I'll be attentive to your your RU-vid videos which are great thank you and by the way have you ever given any thought about modeling professionally.
there are only two things I hate in life 1 Beauty gurus having life hacks with a destroy a good book for a silly DIY 2 people who read books don't read the classics now these are mostly pet peeves but like if you agree I'm currently reading Treasure Island it's a great classic what's your favorite classic
+Marie ah yessss haven't read Anne of green gables.. but little women and pollyanna are both amazing.. 😍 I actually performed a scene from little women the other day!
