What I Watched In June by Karsten Runquist. I appreciate the filmmaking and it's cultural impact, but it really wasn't for me. A little too many racial slurs for my taste 🤷♂️. 5/5

I really think Barry deserves a larger spotlight, it's such a well done series down to every point, the cinematography, the editing, its humor, its darkness, the acting, tension, the writing, the pacing. It's all so perfect and it's crazy how engaging it remains from start to finish while accomplishing so much good every episode in just 30 minutes.
It keeps pulling off tonal shifts that shouldn’t work, but somehow always do through the writing, performances, timing, and shot composition. It also has just the right amount of surrealism while being grounded in real consequences for the characters
@@zacharywoloszynski4258 It’s cool that you don’t have to watch the first one to enjoy it. Of course it’s better when you’ve seen the first one but still
Honestly I didn’t really think it was good, still didn’t seem very different from all the mainstream modern movies people complain about. Just a basic story with basic stereotypes as characters. There was definitely some material there, some of the action scenes were well shot and definitely felt powerful. This may be very niche, but I’m angry that not a single person died in this movie, like half a dozen times a character was predictably saved “out of nowhere”. Made me root for the bad guys, they were better at flying the jets and should have won. Basically I don’t know why everyone thinks this movie isn’t just propaganda and Memorial Day bait.
tgm is the anti-jurassic world dominion; both were unnecessary sequels, but tgm was a great movie made with a ton of passion while jwd sucked and was a soulless cash grab
on another note i think it could honestly work if barry ended with a feature length film as it’s finale. a fourth season is already happening, but it sort of feels like a fifth one won’t be fully necessary. that might change with whatever they’re doing for season four, but a movie to finish out the series could honestly be kinda epic. to quote noho hank “i’m just riffing”
I agree that the action was phenomenal, but I was taken out of it because of the lacklustre story and some use of characters. To be fair, the final act was grinning for me all the way as well.
The thing I've found about Cronenberg films is that they're not really "about" any one thing. It's a lot of ideas and vibes. A nightmarescape even moreso than Lynch sometimes.
11:35 on that note that certain scene in the finale (which i’m not gonna say what but if you’ve watched you obviously know what i’m talking about) was genuinely more scary than most horror films i’ve seen recently, he definitely should make a horror/thriller

Uptown girls is such a cult classic, like growing up with this has influenced a lot of girls , like dealing with mommy issues , having troubles with food , Diarrhea, (im not joking ), coming of age, trying to please everyone, the choices of living your your life carrying free or obey the rules and be perfectionist. The chemistry between them , the performance.
Barry S3 proved that some TV series get better and better the more they go. If S4 is the final season by all means I’d be ok with it. End while you’re still good is how I see it. Also Bill Hader and Alec Berg are amazing TV directors.
I watched: the darjleen limited 9 The life aquatic with Steve zissou 7 Our father 7 Pride 10 Ransom 7 Hustle 7 Argo 9 The craft legacy 5 Little boxes 4
What I watched in June for the first time (not so much really, been a busy and rough month): A Scanner Darkly (2006) 3/5 Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) 5/5 Trafic (1971) 3.5/5 Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special (RIP) Windfall (2022) 1/5 The 400 Blows (1959) 5/5 Series that i finished: Barry (what a season finale, holy shit) How to with John Wilson (great and underrated tv show too) Currently watching: Six Feet Under (s02) Veep (s06) Futurama (s05) What we do in the Shadows (s03)
Couple of new watches this month: The Bob's Burgers Movie: Loved it. While not perfect it succeeded in keeping the comedic style and heartwarming nature of the show, which is exactly what I wanted. Also the animation is gorgeous. The Kings Man: Been meaning to watch it for ages. It was a pretty draining watch. Had one moment in it I was surprised with, everything else fairly mediocre. I did enjoy Rhys Iffans hamming it up as Rasputin though.
I saw JW Dominion (2 times because I've grown up with the franchise and it means a lot to me), top gun maverick, and the black phone. Top Gun is an absolute must-see and is genuinely better than the original and is one of my favorite movies that I've ever seen in a theater. I went into the Black Phone knowing absolutely nothing and loved it, I'm usually not even a big horror fan. Dominion was a really fun movie but was definitely a little disappointing considering it's the finale of such a huge franchise and the pacing was way off.
My favorite thing about Top Gun is the recruitment booths set up outside the theaters! Tom Cruise is also super awesome and totally not a psychopath, I swear!
yeah im shocked that the severity of the propaganda in that film went right over karsten's head. either that or it didn't bother him enough to knock points off.
@@ryguythesci-figuy81 it's so easy for us to look back at old wartime films like that and laugh at how obvious the propaganda was, and then watch every major blockbuster out right now and ignore how they are all just blatantly glorified recruitment ads. hell, most of the marvel movies i've seen in theaters the past 6-7 years had actual recruitment ads before the previews. once you notice it, you never stop noticing it. i'm just surprised at how karsten's probably seen 10x the amount of films i have in my lifetime and hasn't picked up on it.
A LIST OF THE MOVIES AND TV SHOWS I WATCHED THIS MONTH: Better call saul season 6:5/5 I mean that mid season Finale and the build up to was executed amazingly.bravo Peter and Vince for making one hell of a journey. And I can't wait to see it's conclusion. It felt like all it got rid off it's innocence in a snake of a finger. Eyes wide shut:5/5 it's so rewatchelable.I've seen it for 5th time now I'm still asking questions and I was also still finding new stuff in the Film. Mindhunter: 4/5 this show really needs to get renewed. The writing and directing was great.Fincher has a way of making the viewers feel like they're in the scene by him doing that every Interegation scenes made me feel disturbed and anxious. The meyorowitz Story New and selected:4.5/5 this Film feels Real to me because of it's dialouge Noah Baumbach dialouge really did a good job capturing how people speak, act and react.
(stars beside my faves!) The Bad Guys🌟 Everything Everywhere All At Once The Grand Budapest Hotel🌟 Big Fish Bottle Rocket Jurassic World Dominion (yeah this was trash) Memoirs of a Geisha Spiderhead Lightyear When Harry Met Sally🌟 10 Things I Hate About You Moonrise Kingdom The Black Phone Toy Story 4 The Fallout
The film that really changed me I would say is into the wild, it makes me cry every time, be more aware of the things around you and your family. there is more I could say but I don’t want a super long comment
I highly recommend the book that movie is based on as well. It's different, but it's probably one of the better books I've read in the last 20 years or so.
Huh.... I hadn't heard Miles Teller was hard to work with. Is that common knowledge and I just missed it? We talking like Brando style ego problems or more Norton style "artistic vision" problems?
I actually watched every Jurassic Park movie for the first time. The first one is a 5/5 classic and I even Jurassic World, warts and all. The other four though… oof that was rough. Especially Fallen Kingdom.
This month I watched Top Gun: Maverick - 4/5 Good Time - 3.5/5 Apocalypse Now - 4/5 Do the Right Thing - 5/5 Boogie Nights - 4/5 The Godfather: Part II - 4/5 Steve Jobs - 3.5/5 Elvis - 3.5/5 Phantom Thread - 4/5 Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story - 4/5 mid90s - 4/5
what i watched this month: the northman (2022): 4/5 blue velvet (1986): 4/5 shoplifters (2018): 3.5/5 fire island (2022): 2.5/5 carol (2015): 4.5/5 good time (2017): 4/5 in the mood for love (2000): 4.5/5 crimes of the future (2022): 4/5 crash (1996): 4.5/5 cha cha real smooth (2022): 4.5/5 shithouse (2020): 2.5/5
I think most of my films watched this June just consists of Coen Brother movies in release order (for story structure analysis) (I'm currently on Inside Llewyn Davis). But then there's also Lightyear, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Turning Red (again), and The World's End (again).
This is what I've watched this month: I've never actually watched Game of Thrones in my life, but due to how famous it got, I was tempted to watch it. So far I am halfway through season 1 and I gotta say - yeah, people weren't joking. Holy shit this show is good. I'd say the only thing I dislike is the pilot, I think it's a boring slog where nothing really happens of any note and may be the worst opening for any series I've ever seen besides, I dunno, maybe Torchwood? Like that is a BAD opener to a fucking great series. First half of GoTs1 = 9/10 Before GoT, I watched Westworld's first season. It's also fantastic, and EXTREMELY thorough, dark sci-fi at its best. Sometimes it felt like it was going nowhere but wow the finale made me think twice about that. I won't spoil anything but let's just say there was a twist in the finale that may be the most shocked I've ever been to a twist... ever? The execution was impeccable. Also, Westworld reminded me how phenomenal of an actor Anthony Hopkins truly is. Westworld s1 = 9/10 Then I watched Lightyear. I know people really don't like this movie, but I had such a good time. It was emotional, fun, the animation was fucking beautiful, I loved how they humanized Zurg into a fantastic villain (which blew my expectations for the villain - I thought they were going to go ahead and just have him be a Darth Vader rip-off, but wow I was impressed on what they did). Michael Giacchino is a fucking mastermind as always, and Chris Evans makes a surprisingly solid Buzz Lightyear. An easy 8/10. Not Pixar at its best but loveable Pixar nevertheless. Then, because Lightyear made me in the mood for animation, I rewatched my fav animated movie: Rise of the Guardians. Seriously, what a perfect movie. The fact that people slept on this blows my mind. The villain might be my favorite villain ever, the story is unique and wonderful, I love it so much. 10/10, a film I will rewatch any day. And to top it all off I watched Doctor Who Series 4 again. First half (as I remember) kinda sucks, but the second half may be the best final half to any sci-fi show ever. It serves as one long barrage of insanely unique ideas and I will never forget the first time I watched those episodes. Because each episode is in effect their own movie, I'll quickly go and rate each of the 13: First half: Partners in Crime: Fun yet brainless, kinda obnoxious but in a good way. 6/10 The Fires of Pompeii: Hideously boring with an ending that makes it all slightly worth it. Still nothing I would ever rewatch. 4/10 Planet of the Ood: Weird, nonsensical, an overrated and dumb episode. 3/10 The Sontaran Stratagem: My lids were closing. Not how you do a Part 1. 3/10 The Poison Sky: Very fun, Sontarans stand out, a memorably funny ending with an incoherent and disappointing conclusion. 6/10 The Doctor's Daughter: Obnoxious in the not-so-fun way. 3/10 The Unicorn and the Wasp: Stylish and fun, hurts to watch becuz of who it's written by. Still can't deny it's fun, though. 7/10 Second half (where shit gets good): Silence in the Library: Intense, poetic horror at its finest. One of the most solid 45 minutes I have ever witnessed on a television screen. 10/10 Forest of the Dead: A little hokier yet just as intense. A crazy finale that keeps going and going. Magical but... it's hard to beat that first part. 9/10 Midnight: INTENSE. Whoa! So intense it's actually kind of hard to watch. The better version of The Monsters on Maple Street (Twilight Zone). 10/10 Turn Left: Poetic and strange, a little hokey, sweet and sad and unnerving in all the right ways. Powerhouse acting from Catherine Tate. 8/10 The Stolen Earth: A powerhouse episode for Who. It doesn't stop moving from the first minute onwards; Avengers level but WAY better than those movies anyway. 10/10 Journey's End: A little slower, WAY weirder (honestly might be the strangest episode of any TV show I've ever watched, and I've watched Twin Peaks!) but still awesome. 9/10 And that's what I watched this month. I'll update you next month! (I know you probably won't read this, but hey it's a good writing exercise)
I watched The Conjuring (rewatch) The Conjuring 2 (rewatch) The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It The Wicker Man (1973) - best of the bunch Mean Streets The Addams Family Corpse Bride And today I plan on watching Spider Man: No Way Home. Thanks for the videos, love your voice :D
a few of my favorites that i've seen this month: 30 minutes or less, the darjeeling unlimited, and of course, top gun: maverick (probably my fav film of 2022 so far)!!! also i've been really enjoying ms. marvel, unlike many other recent mcu projects it has so much style and personality.
I was actually an extra in 30 Minutes or Less! I appeared in the classroom scene (I was ten years old and as a result wasn’t allowed to see in for a few years lol)
@@Kaaaman i did watch it, during the first few episodes i was not invested in the journey at all but after the 4th episode i really started to dig it. and i agree i think it is one of the better mcu shows on disney plus.
My June list Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (10/10) Shrek 2 (9/10) Top gun Maverick (8/10) Man of Steel (5/10) The Animatrix (10/10) Batman v Superman UE (6/10) Wonder Woman (8/10) Shazam (7/10) Morbius (3/10) Song of the Sea (8/10) Fantastic Mr Fox (9/10) The edge of seventeen (5/10) Batman: Under the Red Hood (9/10) Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (7/10) Knight and day (8/10) El olvido que seremos (9/10)

Guys, a bit of a newbee question, so sorry for that. Where can I find some kind of definitive list of genres and movies worth watching? Preferably listed chronologically. I'd like to get into cinema myself, I have watched some classics and know how production works, but now I'd like to systemize the knowledge and expand my movie "vocabulary", I guess. Appreciate all the answers in advance. Stay safe and stay hydrated!
I'm actually very excited to hear more about what you think of Ozu since my film class last semester focused pretty heavily on his work. Hoping for a longer video on some of his stuff! His humor really hits my buttons, and I love his pacing.
Nice, I wish I had gotten a film class like that. Ozu is so good at making stories that are really emotionally impactful because they're very real and grounded. Like Tokyo Story is about something that happens to most parents, your children grow up and become less and less a part of your life and suddenly they have no time for you anymore. He really knew how to draw drama out of ordinary pieces of people's lives
I personally thought Top Gun was really well done and was able to enjoy it a lot. BUT. I recognize that movies like this can influence the more impressionable among us to think that global conflicts are black and white and that the US military will always be the clear hero (and somehow underdog?). And that's not awesome. I think it's ok to be a fan of the movie and take issue with the very real propaganda at the same time
breaking bad seasons 1-3 a silent voice- 5/5 kimi- 2/5 the suicide squad (rewatch)- 4/5 black mirror: shut up and dance- 4.5/5 everything everywhere all at once- 5/5 black mirror: the entire history of you- 2.5/5 fight club (rewatch)- 5/5 fallen angels- 4.5/5 top gun: maverick- 4/5 a midsummer nights dream- 2/5 inside outtakes- 3.5/5 black mirror: hang the dj- 3.5/5 django unchained- 5/5 black mirror: men against fire- 1.5/5 8 mile- 2.5/5
I watched crimes of the future it felt unfinished to me, a lot of scenes were just characters talking with nothing going on and no importance to the setting. But the gold moments of the movie I just couldn’t get enough of, I’ve never seen any film like it.
Here's a list of what i watched this month. - Bo Burnham Inside Outakes: more songs to add to my favourite songs playlist. For some reason I didn't like Chicken as much as everyone else haha. - Topgun Maverick: I almost cried in the theater at how good the film was. My heart was full of joy and happiness and excitement. - Fire Island: I think the film's ok but quite forgettable for me - Kiss of The Rabbit God (a short available on youtube): I love the style and theme. Quite impressive. - Em and Trinh (a biopic about a late respectful songwriter in my country Vietnam, everyone here was going to theater for this film): I don't think I watched the same film as everyone else really. Everyone on the internet was bashing it, but I think it's very good. I love everything about it and don't think it's as poorly written as everyone thinks. - EEAAO: My country was late to the game lol, theaters here have just bought it recently. Tbh, it didn't live up to the hype to me. An extremely fascinating film tho.
What I watched in June: Tokyo Godfathers Airplane Ed Wood (again) Captain America Civil War Doctor Strange Shaun of the dead (again) Lightyear Top Gun Maverick Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Point Break (1990) The Tale of the Princess Kaguya Dumbo (1941) Spider-man Homecoming Hot Fuzz (again) Incredibles 2 (again) Yellow Submarine
tokyo godfathers is my favorite kon movie and my favorite christmastime movie. i watch it every year with my sister. makes me wish he got to do more comedies in his time. a man gone way too soon 💔
New reviews and rewatches: Bo Burnham Inside Outtakes 4.5/5 - As a whole, I'd say it deserves a 4. But the way I felt, sitting with it, knowing how important Inside is and was to me, this only made me love it more. Top Gun: Maverick 4/5 - I'm not the biggest fan of movies like this one, but I was absolutely into it the whole time. Only reason it isn't a 4.5 is that there was no scientology. The Amazing Spider-Man 3/5 - I used to adore this movie as a little kid. With that in mind, it's really fucking boring. Scre4m 3.5/5 - Still don't know why I watched this movie, but it was free, and it was pretty good. Horror's not really my thing either, but it was a fun time. RRR 5/5 - One of the only reasons I still want Netflix. Shit, it's good. Favorite movie of the year so far. Why can't big budget Hollywood ever make a masterpiece that completely enthralls me the whole 3 hours? The Simpsons Movie 4/5 - They killed Green Day in this movie. Lightyear 3/5 - Possibly the most pointless animated movie made this year. Wait, no, Buck Wild. Thor: Ragnarok 4/5 - I only watched this movie because I was fully convinced the new Thor was coming out on June 24th for some reason. That being said, still good. The Mist 4/5 - Again, horror, not my thing. You know what is? Fucked up endings. Barry S3 5/5 - Yeah, seriously. It's that good. Stranger Things 4/5 - Definitely a return to form for the show, and I'm genuinely excited for the next two episodes literally tomorrow. However, there are so many ways these two episodes could destroy what we've got going here, so I can't help but be worried.
Thank you for mentioning Mad God. I saw it at a horror film festival in 2021 and haven’t been able to shake it since. Not many films have had this effect on me.
What I watched: The Darjeeling limited 3.5/5 The royal tenenbaums 4/5 Everything, everywhere, all at once 5/5 Saw (watched this six times during the month so….) 5/5 The power of the dog 4/5 Midnight cowboy 5/5 Fantastic mr fox 4.5/5 High tension 3/5 Saw 2 4/5 The conjuring 4/5 Saw 3 3/5 Saw 4 2.5/5 Saw 5 3/5 Piggy 4/5 Saw 6 3/5 Sunset boulevard 4/5 Saw 7 2.5/5 Fargo 4.5/5 Evil dead 3/5 Carrie 4/5 Black phone 4/5
Yes please! I would love to see a deeper analysis from Karsten, I know he would do a great job and RU-vid is very lacking in Barry season 3 content right now.
ive watched Django Unchained, Enemy, Dr. Stranger 1 and 2 (really enjoyed 1 but god was 2 a mess), first half of Ant-man, Top gun mav, The Batman again, Elvis, About time and JW unfortunately. also been watching The Boys, highly recommend; such a fun and dark show. oh yeah and Gilmore Girls on the side lol
I agree with the other comment, that I think The Dawn Wall was better than Free Solo, even though I really liked Free Solo. What those guys did on the Dawn Wall I thought was even more impressive, and the film is incredibly compelling. It makes a great companion piece with Free Solo.
I saw the black phone in an empty theater with my friend and we had such a great time having the theater to ourselves that we applauded by the end of it. 8/10 movie
I've really just been binge watching Babylon 5 this month. Surprised I haven't heard of it until recently. Very well written show(though dated special effects)
Karsten have you ever watched The Wire? I am about a two decades late to it but having watched it once, feel like it’s ruined a lot of shows I try to watch now
My ranking: Trash: 9 = Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom 8 = Jurassic World Dominion Good: 7 = Deadpool Great: 6 = Unbreakable 5 = Turning Red Amazing: 4 = Die Hard with a Vengeance 3 = Kingsman the Secret Service 2 = The Sixth Sense One of my favorites of all time: 1 = Top Gun Maverick (a near perfect blockbuster. Watched it twice this month in cinemas) Also watched S4 Vol.1 of ST and two seasons of breaking bad having since started watching last week. Damn was the final minutes of the S2 finale haunting and apparently it gets better
I normally type out most of what I've watched and my score for them in these comments But I watched "A Brighter Summer Day" for the first time this month. So yeah, that's all I've been thinking about. Please please please watch this film if you haven't
In my media histories course, my professor had the class watch Double Indemnity as the example film for the film noir era. Everyone was engaged and my professor said he always has fun talking about the movie afterwards.
ive watched Django Unchained, Enemy, Dr.
Don't diss Stephen Lack like that! He's the perfect audience surrogate. That season Barry though was indeed next level. Sarah Goldberg gave probably my favorite performance of the year. Just incredible stuff
I watched being john malkovich. No movie has gotten more giggles and "wtf"s out of me in recent memory. I do think that on a second watch the novelty will wear off and itll be hard to sit through because the unexpected insane plot points are one of its strongest aspects.
I watched it recently and really liked it but I felt like the first part was so much better than the second, great movie anyway, that low ceiling office is just pure genius
Hey dude where can I find your short films, I’m currently studying short film and screenplays in class and I’d like to see what you’ve come up with to hopefully apply to my own ideas just to know more about that kinda thing I’ve seen them on Letterboxd but I can’t find the actual films
Top Gun Maverick and Elvis were my favorites of this month. It's an experience I'll never get again with these two. Minor flaw on Elvis: it didn't show his positive side with being a loving parent and husband.
I watched: The Fantastic Mr. Fox 4.5/5 The Darjeeling Limited 4/5 The Royal Tenenbaums 5/5 War Machine 3/5 Seven Psychopaths 4.5/5 Rocketman 3.5/5 A Few Good Men 3/5 American Psycho 4/5 Who Framed Roger Rabbit 4.5/5 3:10 To Yuma (2007) 4/5
If you enjoyed Free Solo, other climbing docs I'd recommend are The Dawn Wall, Meru, and The Alpinist. All are special for their own reasons. Also, now that you've seen The Dark Crystal, you have to give Labyrinth a go! Definitely one of those ones it helps if you grew up with it, but you have to give it a shot!
I'm really sketched out by people saying Top Gun is great. I havent seen it & i honestly don't want to because the movie just seems like it's a jerk-off of the U.S. Military & i really hate that
I’m at 3:03. Paused. I’ve had this thing where it’s like “why hadn’t I seen films that feel different?”. Almost like all the films I see kind of feel the same and blend, yet also don’t. Yet I know there’s just more that I’ve occasionally seen. I think I might have just connected the dot that though cinemas have a aspect in this, the dynamic is also heavily played into what I watch on tv. The tv guide shows either literal repeats of films or films that now that I’ve seen and keep seeing all of them, feel like this. Huh.
