Graduating from college can be daunting. After graduation, you have a whole world of possibilities to explore and only a slight clue as to how to adult and get things done. Plus, how do you find a job after graduation? Manage your budget? Pay bills? Was that thing I just finished really supposed to be the best time of my life? As a Harvard graduate who had a typically stressful ivy league experience - my answer is no. Being an independent adult is incredibly liberating, especially if you don’t dwell too much on the lives your fellow alumni are leading. You will find your way.
This video really encapsulates that jumping off a cliff/ into the Amazon post-grad feeling: • A Year Uncharted | Ahs...

Adulting has definitely had its struggles, but post grad years > college years - by far.

Girl, I just graduated less than a month ago, and I really needed this. Everyone keeps asking me what I am doing next and expects me to have a clear answer which is starting to get annoying after a while. I just want to take my time and see what opportunities and enjoy being out of school. I am just realizing that just because everyone else has something that their doing that I don't have to rush to find anything.

THANKS I NEEDED THIS! I am finishing my last semester at the moment and it has been a JOURNEY. Something I wish I had figured out earlier is that if you have to freedom to drop a unit or delay a unit if the workload is really affecting your mental health, then do it. Graduating later than all of your friends isn't necessarily a bad thing if it keeps you sane and healthy.

"When I say the struggle was real ... as the entire set of rational and irrational numbers...it was *real*." THANK YOU for this!! This is amazing and needs to be heard -- like I wish someone was there to tell me this in undergrad. You're inspiring, girl. thank you!

I graduated from nursing school in 2016 and I'm feeling you on the 5-year plan that everyone tries to make you map out. For what? I need to work a little bit in my field to actually know what my strengths/weaknesses and likes/dislikes are. Let me breathe!

I love this video. I also graduated from college in 2015 and my first job was definitely of the "ringworm" variety. I've done a bunch of learning and growing since graduation and I also wish I had known how much more there would be, even so soon after.

I graduated on May 20 and moved home for (most of) the summer, and I definitely feel like a failure. I'm going back to the summer job I've had since I graduated from high school, which definitely feels like a step backward instead of forward. I applied for internships in my field, and was rejected on all sides, so I can't help the disappointment. Simultaneously, I'll have a new position so I'm even more scared of what comes next than I already was as a post-grad. I do have a job lined up for post-grad (I'm volunteering with Americorps), but it's nothing like I imagined it would be and it has nothing to do with what I want to do. It gets me out of my house, which has its pros and cons and fears, but it still makes me feel like a failure. Like the only things I can be seen as good at are things I don't want to do. I know this is a time of exploration and trying new things, so I'm trying to stay positive, but it's really hard to conquer the feeling that I'm SUPPOSED to be off doing amazing things that will have a clear connection to my future career, and I'm SUPPOSED to be moving on and forward, not returning to the same place for a summer job, and I'm SUPPOSED to be traveling the world when instead I'm at home watching a lot of Netflix. I wish I had some epic travel plan or even the feeling of excitement for what comes next, but I'm just scared and disappointed and tired.

Sounds like good advice! :D What I wish I had known when I graduated from high school was basically Hank Green's video on life advice. You don't need to find your 'dream job' that you're a genius at. A job that you can do that will fill your fridge is totally fine. Also that it's totally ok to not go to uni/academia and 'just' do vocational training. (But I guess that also depends on how the educational system works in your country.)

I just graduated two days ago with my bachelors and it feels like there should be a giant shift from a fumbling student to an organized adult but I haven't reached that yet. I still feel like a child so as someone who is trying to get a teaching job, I don't feel old enough to adult lol

Graduated 3 years ago and while I've always wanted to know what I wanted to do. It's a damn struggle getting there. Things got worse for me afterwards. I'm 27 living with my mother who is threatening to kick me out the house if I can't find a job next month. Been trying to finish my own projects, but it's harder for me to concentrate now and in my desperation I've been doing too much stuff at once. I think I really need to focus on getting some people to help me design a video game so I can have something done and if the game is good I can sell it and get some money in my pocket.

OMG, all of the stuff you said is SO TRUE. I feel like my post-college experience was similar, but also really intense. The day of graduation, even after the ceremony was over and I had gone home, I was still like, "Wait, did that actually happen?" And the next day I was like, "OMG, IT DID. WHAT EVEN. But that's okay, because I'm going to do this year-long volunteer program in Nashville, TN, and it's gonna be great and give me time to figure shit out." The time leading up to me leaving was AWFUL because my parents expected me to be busy all the time and have a job, and meanwhile I was like, "WTF, I just graduated college and am feeling super existential and depressive about everything, can you chill please?" Things were WAY better once I left, and my year was awesome and so much stuff happened, and then I came back. Readjustment wasn't easy, but I made it through. But everything was not roses and unicorns, and still isn't. I found an internship soon after I got back that I did for two months and hated (didn't feel appreciated at all and had to do all the grunt work, whereas the other intern got to do whatever she wanted ARGH), and then I got a second internship with a local nonprofit that I'm still at and don't like (the complete unorganization is one of them, among other things), and I work part-time at a grocery store. I've been out of college for two years now, and I'm still living with my parents, and I'm losing my patience. I want to write grants for nonprofits, so I've been applying for jobs, but at this point I don't even feel productive doing that. It just feels like I'm sending my applications into the void. I thought I would be so much farther along at this point, and it's super frustrating. My parents are not helpful at all. They just make me more stressed out. WAH, this is super long. I had a feeling that was going to happen. Can someone please tell me I'm not alone in this and that everything's gonna be okay? Also a hug would be great.

I graduated last year, and now I'm itching to get back into school for my masters and maybe PhD. It wasn't until I was done with my undergrad, that I know exactly what I want to do possibly in the future because I had no idea during college, which made it hard for me to find work and rely on temp work for a while. I've been told by a lot of peers to apply to Harvard for grad school and I might just try since it's in my hometown 🙂
@AhsanteB
@AhsanteB 7 лет назад
Never hurts to apply! Yeah I think that taking a minute to examine what you really want after undergrad can be really helpful. I'm taking that time right now and I'm glad for the perspective, and glad I didn't rush into a masters program right after.

I graduated nearly two years ago (we go by calendar year) and I wish I knew that it's ok to try and strive and be nervous, but it's not ok to feel guilty for having a job. Being grateful and feeling guilty should not be linked emotions. Yes it is tough out there, but I shouldn't have let my insecurities about not being 'special' prevent me from enjoying my first few months of professional life.

I'm just gonna not have any expectations for when I graduate other than the expectation that I'll look back and be happy that I joined the communities I did. Other than that I've got not freakin clue what my future holds and I'm not gonna let that ambiguity get the best of me!

I don't know why I'm here since I'm only in high school but whatever you say sounds so right. I moved to America last year and had a pretty good school year. I'll be going to my junior year and I'll have no AP classes😫😫 (all honors). I feel like I'm so left behind.
