Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
2. What are you studying? I'm a student in a Japanese "Masters of Business Administration Program"
3. How old are you?: tinyurl.com/y7x...
4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8...
5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop).

The middle name thing is sooooo true. I moved there for half a year for school, and had to open a bank account for my scholarship. I put my middle name down because that’s what I’m used to doing, and they were oddly confused by it?? It was also on my school documents, so at events they’d sometimes call me by my middle name, or my middle name became my last name, or any other combo of names. It was weird and confusing.

Most people who stay away from the dentist longer than 3 years end up with $3,000 or more in necessary dental treatment due to improper homecare and the American diet. When you realize 1 Crown is on average $1300 you see how easy it is to rack up a 10,000 bill when you dont care for your teeth.

Have you ever had a deep cleaning? A tooth extraction? A crown? How about a $6000 implant? Yes, one implant! Why be a neuro-surgeon & pay phenomenal liability insurance when you can be a dentist much quicker & make a killing in no time? I know there are good souls out there who do free dental work too. That isn't the majority. Dental fees are murder-1, esp. for the elderly, at least if your teeth matter to you.

@JayAntoinette
@JayAntoinette 6 лет назад
About the hair thing. Idk if you're natural or not but how about trying silicone based or dehumectant products. Caution about the silicone-based products though: they will be more likely to cause buildup, so if you have a sensitive scalp, that may or may not agree with you. But it washes out easily enough. Also, try jojoba oil in your deep conditioning routine. The key to avoiding as much frizz as possible with hair is to make sure it's as moisturized as possible so it doesn't absorb as much moisture from the elements. It won't stop frizz and poofiness completely but it will certainly help.
@kemushichan
@kemushichan 6 лет назад
JayAntoinette Thank you for the tips! :D I quietly transitioned to my true poodleform in these two years and am still figuring out which products work best. Deep conditioning every week but trying to find what actually sets in rather than just sits on top (like coconut oil does for me 😂)

Questions: What did you start with first when beginning the process of moving to Japan? What was the visa process like? What did you pack and how many suitcases did you bring? Did you get a phone, router, bank account prepared before moving? (You answered this one) What did you do for housing and transportation accommodations? Did you prepare as far as doctors in Japan and things along those lines? Any apps to suggested? How did you bring your pet with you? How long did it take you to prepare from your initial point of saving all the way to departing? Do you recommendation on a nice sum of money we should save? Also should we exchange currency before going?

For High School students. (#1) Start at a Community College, (#2) get a job with tuition reimbursement( ex. UPS you only work 3-4 hours no weekends overtime only during the holiday season) (#3) open a separate credit union account from your main account (DO NOT GET THE ATM CARD TO THAT ACCOUNT) make it so you have to physically visit to get money. If you are on your parent's insurance get your yearly exams dental is usually 2x a year and medical preventative care is usually no cost.

I really liked your point about coming as soon as you're sure you want to try living abroad. I finally got to the point where I was completing my bachelors and I put off getting one thing I want so much, cats, because of a lifelong desire to move to japan. I got the cats, and then suddenly I wanted a bigger apartment, more furniture, whatever. Fortunately, I started catching myself falling into that trap before I started to settle and am figuring out next steps.

@catlover276

You are adorable, so beautiful! But, your comment about hair. I totally understand. My hair is very curly, and a few months ago I ran out of my favorite mousse from the states, only to find out that it has been discontinued. I don't know how to do my hair without it, so I am a frizzy mess at the moment, spending too much money trying out Japanese products that aren't really strong enough to control my hair. It's so hard to figure out curly hair health and styling when there is no one else around with the same problem. One thing I found is that, there are some products geared toward curly or wavy hair, but they are incredibly light. My theory is that this is because they are for permed Japanese hair, which is probably easily weighed down because of it's thick natural straightness. They do nothing to calm frizz or define curls that are naturally on the devacurl 3-4 scale. For now, I am trying to use Himawari oil-in products to keep my hair hydrated and healthy, but I still can't find a curl defining product I like. If anyone has suggestions, I am all ears!

Root canals, crowns, and major surgeries that could have been prevented by catching the root of it soon (pun intended!). Teeth are funny because no matter how much you brush, rinse or gargle, things like crowding, stress (grinding), and family history can create tiny nooks and crannies that turn into ridiculous damage if you don't check regularly.

I'm American who has lived in Japan for many years. Nice, well-organized, fast-paced, down-to-earth video. The price of medical care in the US is crazy. On the other hand, I understand that you wanted to "take care of stuff" before you went to Japan. But I wonder what you think. When you come to Japan on a 1 year or longer visa, you have to sign up for Japanese national health insurance, which is dirt cheap. Medical care (even without insurance) is much cheaper in Japan, too. If you could go back and do it again, would you consider "taking care of stuff" here in Japan -- after you arrive -- rather than before leaving in the first place? I've never had a $10,000 dentist bill, but an annual check up with x-rays, for example, would cost something like $30 in Japan ($100 if you didn't have insurance.) I think that is probably more like $200 in the US. So you might have been able to save a lot of money if you went to doctors in Japan. What do you think?
@kemushichan
@kemushichan 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching! I hope you had a great holiday. Like you said, prices here are amazing but I still wouldn't have addressed my specific dental *project* here in Japan. For cleanings, fillings or basic extractions I don't mind doing that here, but the reason the bill was about $10K was because it included major oral surgeries. Many doctors in Japan don't use the same kind of pain killers or don't put you under, and I didn't want to be awake with basic anesthesia for a lot of these processes. That being said, dental tourism is a big thing on this side of the world so visiting a place like the Phillipines that has a similar aesthetic to the states, at MUCH cheaper prices seems more up my alley. Healthcare here in Japan is very reasonably priced and one of my favorite parts about living here, but there are some procedures/services they just don't offer here, or not with enough painkillers ;_;.
@empty-voiid

Seriously though, the bills from the dentist, doctor and all are what makes me say "I'll never move to the US" even though I wish I could. It's scary to know that health costs so much.

KemushiChan - If you needed that much dental work done you should have just stopped off in Thailand for a week or so on your way to Japan and had it all done there for a fraction of the cost. Or if you could have put it off until you got a job in Japan you could have had it done there. When I worked and lived in Tokyo in the 90’s the co-pay was very reasonable for all the dental treatments I had done there.

I’ll be doing the whole uprooting thing next March, and this video was just what I needed :) Speaking of money, did you ever figure out how to send money back to the US?

Moo Moo There’s a few services catered for foreigners living abroad/in Japan. Goremit and transferwise are the popular ones among my friends, but you can send money using JP post as well

If I go to Japan for living I will definitly bring curly hair products because, well... japanese don´t have my tipe of hair. And deodorant, because people say that the japanese one don´t work.
