This is ABSOLUTELY a Met Gala dress, and you look stunning in it. It captures so many nuances of American history and the history of American fashion. ~chefs kiss~
Opera Rap Queen. Yes. Nailed it. I really like the ragged trim. It emphasises the denim look, without taking any glamour away. I would not have thought this would work, but it does.
The gold in your cuffs with your matching shoes! You had the perfect met gala dress! So unique yet timeless! I’m glad you made your dream denim dress into a reality! You have a fabulous team and I can’t believe this video isn’t trending!
@@jdbutler6609 You are right - it's chambray or "work shirt fabric" which is dyed denim color. It's quite appropriate because it's also working peoples' fabric as denim is.
OMG I COULD LOOK AT THIS FOR HOURS!!! You look absolutely stunning, Cheyney, and I'd take you over a random celeb who didn't read the assignment any day 😍😍😍 Also, for anyone interested in Haiti and its history, the podcast Revolutions does an awesome job of dissecting the history of the revolution and some of the many influences at play.
you look so beautiful in this gown!! it’s so shiny with so much history and intention behind it 🥺💕 Thank you for creating so many videos for us to learn valuable things from. And YES I would love to see more from Dress Address! I love it!!
Jana did an incredible job bringing your vision to life. The dress is exquisite and you wear it so well Cheney. Truly breathtaking. The Met Gala would be lucky to have you walk the carpet.
I've had a design idea floating around my head for days, but was art-blocked, and this video just unblocked me. Thank you so much for your work, and for the rush of inspiration. Also, yes, your gown was a perfect fit for the Met Gala, and honestly did it better than most gowns there.
I think the dress is fantastic, and yes, you would have fit right in at the Met Gala (and would have outshone quite a few of the attendees). This dress fits the design brief of the gala a lot more than some of the ones we saw on the red carpet. What makes this dress brilliant is that it blends _perfectly_ the silhouette and drape of an 18th Century gown, and the textiles and seam finishes of the Denim Age we are in now. ❤ The frayed edges and the topstitching are just chef's kiss. You could have gone overboard with this pretty easily, adding kitschy jeans pockets and other overt references to modern denim, or made it look like an ordinary sacque-back gown in a pretty blue fabric. This dress threads the needle beautifully. Which dress should you do next? 🤔 Yes. 😁
I LOVE the dress, it totally belongs both at the met gala and in a rap opera. You're beautiful and the dress is beautiful and this is such a cool concept and execution
Wow!!! You and your dressmaker are a great pair!!!! I really enjoy your channel, I love to learn about history while I watch RU-vid!!! Thankyou for all that you create!!!!
The dress was AMAZING. The trim work was especially gorgeous. (And when you wore it with your hair and makeup all “gussied up” it was just breathtaking! You definitely stood out in a good way!)
This dress is EVERYTHING!!!!!!! And it definitely belongs at the Met Gala. As a black woman who spent way too many hours watching period shows, movies and read the romance novels. *cough* lowkey still do *cough*. Seeing you in that dress brings me so much joy. I wish your channel was around when I was a teen.
I saw the dress in pictures of the dinner. Never would have guessed that it was denim! It is stunning. Even more so now because of the denim. It definitely should have been at the Gala. Yes, please continue with the series. It would definitely be interesting.
Woah, Mama! You look amazing! That denim - and the sleeve details - just gorgeous. You need to marry your tailor; if you don't I will. She's irreplaceable. I used to live in Key West where the Haitian girls would walk to church looking fierce, and that's what this dress reminded me of (although they weren't quite as formal). It was really the only time you could ever see anyone dressed up there. You really captured the flavor of it. Thanks for your awesome uploads and all the blood, sweat and tears that back them up. I hope you know how much we all appreciate you.
STUNNING!!!!!! 🤎💖🤎💙🤎💛🤎💜🤎🙌🏿 You look like a QUEEN! I love the details--the different treatment of denim, the gold lining of the sleeves, everything. It's beautiful, and so are you.
I absolutely loved this dress before, but learning it’s denim is so much better! Definitely fits the met gala more than most outfits that attended! You’re always such an inspiration and I really admire you and your team
Wow!! That dress is amazing and the fabric is just exactly what you described. Watching folks like yourself taking classic and historic styles and making them your own just tickles me so much. That dress ABSOLUTELY belongs at a Met Gala or any other Gala out there. I love your style and look forward to seeing what else you have in store! You were absolutely stunning, and you just glowed when wearing it - so obviously happy and so very beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
Stunning dress, beautiful and strong model! There is a black and white "mudcloth" (?) dress I'd love to see and learn more about. Also looking forward to your take on what is mudcloth and where is it from.
I love the flashes of yellow and gold against the denim! I would never have thought that it would work, but it pulls everything together and makes you look twice. Fabulous!
I came here from Bernadette's channel. What a statement dress!! So much meaning and history. I love that your seamstress supports your creativity so whole-heartedly!! I look forward to watching through your videos. I know that I will be better for it. ♥
Such a stunning piece. A good dress designer is a magical friend to have! The fluidity of the back is amazing!!!! You looked perfect and the Met Gala would be lucky to have you!
Dear Gods it's so nice to see Historical CosTubers working together and getting along and you're just showing me more people I need to follow. Fantastic work, Ms. Cheyney -- and Tara(?) your seamstress-parter. That dress is GORGEOUS!
I loved the small gold accents with the thread, the shoes, and the inner cuff on your sleeves. Just STUNNING! When I first saw it in Abby's vlog, my jaw just dropped. 100% Met Gala worthy. 100% long live the queen! ❤
Stunning! So amazing! You and your mantua maker are seriously talented. It suited you so well and you looked perfect at the Met. Thank you and all your collaborators for bring this to me.
You are a queen!!! That dress is stunning on you! I love all the detailing and the way the back billowed was perfect. Can't wait for the next video in this series!
What an incredible dress. Much cooler than a lot of the things that people wore to the Met Gala! I'd love to see your take on one of Mary Todd Lincoln's dresses.
It looks wonderful! I think it belongs in the met gala! I'm so glad you got to wear such a beautiful dress. Your team did an excellent job of making you look gala-fantastic!
That dress is incredible! When I first saw pictures from the dinner, my eye was drawn to your dress immediately. Would love to see you attend the MET Gala.
I came here from Bernadette's channel and I must say this is amazing. The dress is beautiful, you are so beautiful, so excited to explore your channel more!
Your dress is so much more on topic than so many of the "big names" who appeared. Like many others, I love the jeans styling in the stitching. Way to bring worlds together! Definitely want to see more!!
Wow you look INCREDIBLE in that dress, I was in awe when I saw the first clip of it, and when you said it was denim I was speechless! Such a cool concept and I love the creativity and unique spin on such a beautiful garment.
Cheney, my god, beautiful is an understatement her. You looked absolutely stunning in this dress! It was so well thought out and crafted. I love everything about it. I second your friends' opinion that your dress belonged at the 2021 MET Gala, I'm actually gonna take it a step further and say that had you been in attendance, you would've been the only one who really understood last year's assignment. The theme was "In America," and I don't feel that any of the outfits I saw captured that theme. Yours was perfect in so many ways, brilliant!
This is Black Luxury. I adore this. Beautiful collaboration by all. Also, the fabric of your top in the talking portions is also lovely. So bright and elegant 😊
This dress is so regal and artistic! I am in love with it! You look absolutely stunning and every single aspect of your look is just *chef's kiss* perfect!
The dress was so perfect for you! Yes, it definitely belonged at the Met! More than a lot of the dresses that were actually at the Met this year! Yours fit with the theme pretty well! Jill
You always serve up the best in costume and history and sensitivity! You are schooling me in the best possible way and I am so grateful for the courage you show in every video. Any time you want to do another dress, I would love to see it.
Just wow. You looked amazing, and that dress is quite an accomplishment. I love the materials, and the details. especially the ruched edgings with their threads.
This absolutely belongs at the Met! I'm so glad to have found your channel because I love Bernadette Banner and after watching your collab video I got excited because I didn't know if a channel like this existed before but now I do! I'm so happy to have found this awesome channel and I'm excited to support it if I can!!
The dress is stunning! Amazing design that took denim (one of my favorite fabrics) to a new level altogether. Definitely Met-worthy. You wore it to perfection!!!
Yes! Met Gala-heck YES! You look gorgeous. Thank you for posting this video as I’d seen you in some other videos of the dinner and was desperately trying to stop frame to check your beautiful dress out. I’m so happy you felt beautiful as you certainly looked beautiful. 🤗❤️
Such Elegance; Such Historical Knowledge; Such Artistry & Creativity; & Such Passion! 😌Ms.Cheney-You have gained my interest & my subscription! 🙋🏾♀️ This dress DEFINITELY deserved to be at the Met Gala. Why? Because, (and even when thinking of ideas myself, I had never thought of this), but THIS-fit the 2021 theme, PERFECTLY! 🙌; not to mention, the Denim material.
Such an original, beautiful and elegant dress! I love how much the denim draped, it reminds me of some indigo tencel I've been sewing with lately. While I understand that your channel and role as an educator is to focus on the history of people who rarely if ever wore anything besides work clothes, it's wonderful that you can play with fashion to make something more formal with a nod towards history with your choice in fabric. It's healing to allow yourself to look fancy too.
Absolutely belonged... and looks far, far better than most of what appeared there. Love the "jean seams" and the hit of yellow harkening back to the original dress. Love how sack back dresses flow.
omg, dear one--you are not only brilliant and gorgeous, but you are soooo creative!! your sacque back gown is more inventive than anything they actually wore to the met gala. it looks amazing on you. it is a work of art that belongs at the met for creativity.
This is my first time on your channel. FABULOUS!! :) I am Indigenous and REALLY LOVE to see other People of Colour f'n nerding out over taking back our place in history. Loving the vision you are sharing and loving how you shout out the peeps that have helped you on the way- whether you know their names or not. REAL TREAT. Liked, commented & subscribed!!! :) Yaaaaaay!!!!
Found you through #safiyanygaard and I’m so grateful! Your gown is a piece of living art and history! You followed the assignment! 💙 Love you x your channel. Thank you!
