A lot of people talk about how soft dr strange was to christina. In the comics hes always destined to be alone as his spiritual job ill say calls for too much. This episode captured that perfectly
I think that the T.V.A. didn't intervene because that timeline was SUPPOSED to end. But still, watching Dr. Strange begging the Watcher for help was hard to watch. This was tragic....
I did not think that this show would go so far as to have a tragic horror story, and goddamn did it end tragically. I was actually scared for Stephen’s mind and soul the entire time. And when he was pleading for Oatu to save his universe only to be shown how it was all his fault, chills. That final scene of Strange just whimpering “No, no, no, I’m sorry.” has to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have seen in years.
This is my favorite episode so far. I'm so glad the "reckless" Dr Strange won in the end. I feel it HAD to end tragically. If they had made the "rational" Strange the winner I would have been disappointed. Having the hero save the day in this episode would have ruined the story. Plus, "reckless" Strange was the superior sorcerer. He put in centuries of mystical work that "rational" Strange did not.
Strange switching seats with Christine and closing his eyes before impact felt like a suicide attempt and it made me really tear up. Then his “no no no nooo” at the end… oof, this one got me guys.
That feeling of absolute panic as he reaches into Chaos Magic to form a 'barrier universe' as Wanda did... but knowing that there's not enough of reality left, it collapses down to the bare 'mirror universe' bubble. You're an unsaved file on a crashing computer...
Dark, sad ending stories are necessary to help us feel the weight of the situations. We often hear “the fate of the universe lies in the balance etc. Blah blah blah” in super hero movies but we never see it actually end. We only see successful endings. Which makes us desensitized and un-impressed with the stories. This was an incredible episode. Loved it.
7:15 O-Bengh - "is she worth the pain?" Hector - "it's Rachel Mcadams bro, ofcourse!" Adam - "you-dono-notin" Agustin - "HAVE YOU SEEN MEAN GIRLS " dead.
This episode of What If is, by far, the saddest episode to date. Holy shit, this was dark and depressing AF. Plus, I love the fact that 4 out of the 5 main actors from the first Doctor Strange movie came back for this episode. The horror elements throughout this episode has me super pumped and more curious as to what the Multiverse of Madness has to offer. I really, really hope that Doctor Strange Supreme can appear in live-action in future projects, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Each Episode Uatu keeps saying he can’t interfere but it sounds more and more like he’s trying to convince and remind himself he can’t even tho he may want to. Eventually I think he will and at that point, either we get led into Spiderman 3, Multiverse of Madness, or The Living Tribunal gets involved since it’s his job to get involved and his jurisdiction
In the comics he eventually does. If anything we will get his story before he interferes. That way we feel it more when he does reach out to help the heroes. Then we will be saying “NO NO NOOOOO 🙊 !”
Adam's right. I didn't think of Oatu as a character in the show, and didn't consider his narration to be breaking the 4th wall. But if he's engaging with the characters in the stories, then he's a character, too. Pretty cool!
And for people asking about absolute point in times and the time stone, the time stone works by reversing time, not actual time travel, it cannot reverse a point in time that would cause a paradox on itself. It might be able to if you had the reality stone at the same time, changing reality to allow it to happen.
At the end there Strange pretty much converted the Time stone into Reality stone too but the lacked of Time stone led to what The Ancient One told Banner in Endgame.
Agustin mentioned this was the first time we've seen the Watcher's features but if you look at the very beginning of the episode, you can see his lips moving in the shadows while he's towering over the city narrating. This is interesting because at the beginning of ep2 his face is in shadow but we could see part of his cheek and chin, but neither are moving even though he's narrating at the time. The number of scenes he's been in has slowly increased, not counting the intro, he's in 1 scene in ep1, 3 in ep2, 3 in ep3, and 4 in ep4 and he's becoming increasingly more detailed. I think these are hints building towards him eventually interfering.
This my fav episode yet, emotional, so deep, so much happens and it was all about losing the heart. This could have been Dr strange 2 honestly, a complete story
I'm so glad that we're at a point where Marvel is making things like this. I have so much hope for the insanity that Dr. Strange 2 could be with Sam Raimi.
The action scenes were so cool, the dark story was refreshing for MCU and honestly, the 5 main characters in this is just brilliant. Benedict Cumberbatch's voice acting is probably one of my favourites, ever.
With all those beings he absorbed I don't think is impossible to escape. He literally create a pocket dimension, the real question is ¿What he will do?
The last words "Sorry, I'm so so sorry" i thought i have done some major mistake in my life which is now irreversible. Those words would be said to that person from the deepest corner of my heart. Best animated episode/story saw in recent times.
3:15 - in 2012 the Ancient One tells Professor Hulk "You're about... five years too early", so Strange takes over the New York Sanctum around 2017, but he does train in Kamar-Taj for at least a year, so if in this alt-verse it's been 2 years since the accident, it would be 2018, Infinity War-ish times.
I have been waiting for this reaction from you guys. This was my favorite Episode by far. I love dark and depressing endings cause life ain't always happy but dang I was not expecting Marvel to do this. And to see the Watcher actually talking to Strange ... Oooohhhhh. And to see Strange crying I'm sorry as it faded to black tore my heart out man. Phew. Loved it man. Loved it. What if... Is just getting better and better.
Ahhh, the chills I felt with Strange sensing the Watcher. The heartache and tragedy and yes, the music! I'm all about Doctor Strange and this was amazing. I've watched it 3 more times and probably half a dozen reactions today and it all just builds the excitement of what the hell we're going to see in No Way Home. There's a lot of questions and theories about the Doctor Strange we see in the trailer and where it leaves us with Multiverse of Madness. For me, now I'm wondering what exactly the Scarlett Witch is bringing to the Sam Rami horror party. My mind has gone into overdrive and it's only 2021; I'm going to be a basket case before the movie even premiers! Already counting the days before a new episode of What If... drops!!
From the previews for future episodes, we know (1) that Dr. Strange Supreme makes a return as one of the Multiverse Avengers, and (2) that Uatu does ultimately intervene in one of the conflicts
It was really cool to see another use for the Time Stone in this episode. I know the live action MCU is moving away from the Infinity Stones in Phase 4, but they were so interesting tbh - I'd love to see the Stones explored more in future What If...? episodes (even if just one Stone at a time).
11:00 "These guys are fighting each other and they have no idea Thanos is coming." lol Also, when Christine said "Stephen, what did you do?" then faded away, it reminded me of "Tony, there was no other way", except way, way, WAY more bleaker
Read the title and was like oh Strange is like Iron Man his heart. When I saw Christine on screen I knew immediately I was wrong. Poor Stephen to be put thru that. I think this Dr Strange is in Spider-Man Far From Home.
Having to live the rest of your life in a dark void where a whole universe once existed, just to float around for eternity and wish you could take it all back. That's rough.
Doctor Strange is set February 2016 to February 2017 he gets surgery/physiotherapy on his body and hands for about six months the goes to Karma Taj to train for a further six months So this episode is set Feb 2018
I have seen all the shows out so far, and a lot of speculating videos, but not any comics or anything, but what if this strange is mephisto, and he whispers from his prison to our Dr. Strange
I don't know if anyone noticed, but the last time he tries to save her, Dr. Strange gives her the car keys in hopes that if they changed seats she would survive but he would die.
In the No Way Home trailer when Strange separates peter while reminiscent of the Ancient one separating Strange and Hulk from their bodies, I wonder if its more of what the Ancient one does to Strange in this episode, splitting two versions of Peter in the same reality. I’m sure it’s probably more the former but it would be really cool if it was the latter. Also this episode was truly heartbreaking. I love how dark What If… is and shows the MCU can go there and still tell fantastic stories.
I remember after the first episode, people were saying how Marvel played it safe and weren't being true to the spirit of What if...? Betting those people have shut the hell up now.
My head-canon: Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo isn't in this episode, or even possibly this universe, because he was the anchor that helped keep Strange from going too far. I mean, he still did dabble a little bit on the wild side, but not eating demons bad. "The bill always comes due" - literally this episode. The Ancient One didn't really admonish this Strange that much for messing with Time earlier (probably because she smells her own hypocrisy) so he just becomes even more emboldened. But Mordo from the start of our MCU universe condemns Strange for doing something that dangerous. Add to that a personal loss greater than just his hands, and voila. For me, it's not Strange's sorry that's heartbreaking, it's Christine's final words. Because now he has to live with it, possibly forever (we don't know the extent the demon swallowing amped up his powers).
I think we will slowly find the characters we know and love and have been with up to Endgame are all slowly drifting apart into different timelines based on their actions and the characters they interact with though seemingly known to us are in fact an alternate version of themselves created by those timelines. If so, I would hope it eventually leads to Dr. Doom and the Celestials going to war. Also, I personally feel that the end of Loki literally allows every character we know to be the worst versions of themselves vs their forced best self that persevered the timelines, allowing for our characters to well and truly fuck things up.
Can someone please explain the whole “what it is…what it isn’t, idk what it is” bit? (Starts at 0:05 and continues during the video) Because I don’t even know the context and that had me cracking the fuck up throughout the entire video 😂😂
I feel like and this episode showed they could, that they could introduce Mephisto by going the variant route. He could be a variant of Dr. Strange who did lose Christine and could be what happened after he lost her and destroyed his universe. At this point he’s all powerful due to all the beings he absorbed he could’ve created his own separate reality.
Think about, though, that this is the first truly dark thing Marvel has done. Yeah, Iron Man had some moments as did Guardians, but this was DARK. And it will likely be one of the most talked about What If... episodes/stories of the year. It then allows for Dr Strange 2 to be a much darker film and fewer people are surprised by it.
This episode reminds me of The Time Machine (2002) with Guy Pearce and Samantha Mumba. SPOILERS for that movie ahead: In the beginning of the movie, Dr. Alexander Hartdegen's fiancée, Emma, is killed by a mugger. He then devotes himself to creating a time machine in order to go back to save her. He successfully creates it four years later, goes back, prevents the mugging only to have her die again when a horseless carriage frightens the horses of a horse-drawn vehicle, running her over. He keeps doing this over and over again: going back in time and preventing her previous death only to have her die again in a different way that same night. Similar to this episode, her death is an absolute point: the reason he creates the time machine to go back to save her. Dr. Hartdegen building the time machine is what he is meant to do; his path/destiny, same as Dr. Strange is meant to be the Sorcerer Supreme to defeat Dormammu. In the movie, they call it a temporal paradox.
Question, who was driving the car that struck Strange’s car and what happened to that driver and where did that car go after the impact 🤔. I would love to see who was driving that car, the truck, the gun man, who set the fire, are they all the same person? Was her heart attack a natural occurrence? Is someone creating fixed points in time, someone we’ve seen…or a variant of someone we’ve seen
What I don't understand is... he already did the time apple thing. Which means he also did the thing with the missing pages. So why did he go all the way to the forbidden library just to read the same book he already read..
So this episode establishes that multiple timelines can exist in 1 universe. So when Sylvie broke the Sacred Timeline, she didn't really open up the Multiverse? So No Way Home is actually the linchpin that broke open the Multiverse? But He Who Remains maintains that his Scared Timeline is what keeps the Multiverses apart... which what I took from it meaning that each universe is bound to their individual timeline, with diversions, interruptions or even cross connections between them being pruned by the TVA. The fact that the Ancient One could split that timeline, without drawing attention from the TVA, perhaps the TVA is bound to one universe (clearly not this one) and only maintains the timelines of that universe?... or this episode could be post Sylvie killing He Who Remains. Then it ties into Loki's season finale where Timekeeper Kang tells the TVA to not do anything about the branching timelines. To be fair to Marvel this concept (which is essentially the Many Worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics) is difficult to explain even amongst physicist. So props to them for even attempting a layman's explanation of it.
I think Evil Strange will be back... Maybe the Spiderman version is not the same as in What If, but he looks like an evil or at least anti-hero version. But I'm wondering why her death was an immutable point in time in this reality and not in others
i just think in finale see song sad version of you are my sunshine and end see reveal tommy and billy in trolberg as do get set up hilda movie hilda and the mountain king
