its like this in Turkish too we say "abi" for older boys and "abla" for older girls "teyze" for old women and "dayı/amca" for old men and the old ones reply to us as "abicim" if we call them abi and this is the case with all the other words ITS SO CUTE I WAS SO AWED WHEN I FIRST MOVED TO TURKEY

mhm! we address anyone older to us that way as a sign of respect. we also will call the elderly has grandpa and grandma as well. It's respectful but also is like showing that we're all kind of like family in a sense :)
All the way in the other side of Asia, here in turkey it still keeps on! Sister,Brother are used very commonly. Sister for example you say to any female older than you as respect. No matter where in Asia you go Respect is very important and i loove it!

This is a nice mix between American-style interactions, where we would immediately be afraid for an unaccompanied child this small, and Japan-style parenting, where they will send kids that small to the store on their own. I’m not criticizing either culture. It’s just interesting to see other perspectives
