If Lincoln won the 1860 election, it’s possible that the south would’ve succeeded from the Union earlier, in 1861. Many southerners would be outraged at that outcome. Given the large industrial capabilities of the Union, it’s likely that Lincoln could’ve defeated the south in 1864. Lincoln would win the 1864 election and go on to be president until 1869. Salmon Chase would win the 1868 election and call for a reconstruction of the south.

How the southern economy would respond to a delayed civil was my first thought during the video. Especially for states that were led by fire eaters this would give them significantly more prep time as they geared up for revolt. I don't think either side would realize the importance of pivotal resources but if one or both sides could stockpile more rations and ammo or worse gather support from a foreign nations this could make it a worse battle.

@@abrahamlincoln937 On May 15th 1898 beloved former governor and Rough Rider commander Theodore Roosevelt was shot and killed by a Spanish soldier in Cuba. His death outraged New Yorkers and the Rough Riders leading to some of the worst atrocities in the war yet. After Vice President Garret Hobart died in 1899, President William McKinley appointed Charles Fairbanks of New York to serve as vice president. McKinley was assassinated in 1900, so Fairbanks assumed the presidency. He mostly continued his policies, strong commitment to the gold standard, military interventionism, high tariffs but added a harsh crackdown on anarchism due to them assassinating McKinley. Fairbanks was re elected in 1904 in a close match up against fellow New Yorker, Alton B Parker who ran on a similarly progressive platform as Bryan had the last two elections but was more moderate on tariffs and was a gold democrat, and controversially was re elected again in 1908 against the populist orator William Jennings Bryan back for a third attempt at the presidency. Fairbanks also faced a strong challenge from senator Robert LaFollete who echoed much of Bryan's platform through a republican view. Fairbanks left office in 1912 to republican strongman, Joseph Canon the powerful speaker of the house, Canon would oversee a crackdown on socialism (Debs would gain 8% of the popular vote due to an actual endorsement from LaFollete) meanwhile Canon faced a strong challenge from senator William Taft from Ohio who called for anti trust regulations, tariff reform and limited anti monopoly measures. Canon successfully triumphed due to support of these trusts and monopolies. Canon would enter the US into the Great War in 1915 following the sinking of the Lusitania and would activate a draft and signed the Espionage and Sedition Acts. Following this Victor Berger, Eugene Debs and several other socialists were arrested. To the rage of progressives like LaFollette, Wilson and Bryan. In 1916 Robert LaFollette, William Borah and Gerald Nye among others created the progressive party which would appeal to farmers and unions in order to challenge the conservative dominance and alleged tyranny in president Canon. Following and endorsement from several socialist leaders the party was renamed to the Farmer-Labor Party with elitist progressives in the east, industrial socialists in the midwest and small farmers in the west. Meanwhile William Bryan once again won the democratic nomination known as the champion of farmers he was polling alarmingly poorly in his core constituency due to support for the Farmer-Labor Party. In order to prevent splitting the anti republican vote they formed an electoral alliance where LaFollette took his name off of most farm states while Bryan took his off the midwest. Bryan focused most of his campaign on ending the war which had become increasingly unpopular. While LaFollette and Bryan were both polling very highly for the better part of the campaign, Canon would see a major comeback due to high support in the farm belt thanks to the high demand for American food due to the war and several military victories of the coast of Jutland, the Somme and Verdun. This led to Canon taking a slight victory but the democrats gained a majority in the house with LaFollete taking several representatives as well. Fortunately for Cannon the conservative coalition of democrats and republicans was able to hold firm and simply prevented Cannon from implementing anti lynching bills due to nationwide race riots. Strikes were beginning to break out all over the US and due to socialist revolutions in France, Germany and Russia the Red scare intensified as did the fanaticism of the socialists and unionists. Cannon nationalized the national guard and brutally crushed and gunned down rioters as American troops began to return home following the end of the Great War and the European continent erupting into flames. In 1920 America is a violent and dangerous place, with the end of the Great War and the socialist revolutions across the continent America is terrified of socialism despite the power of Standard Oil and other monopolies and trusts have over the American government. Cannon orders US troops to militarily assist the governments of France and Germany against their revolutions, while sending substantial amounts of aid to the white army in Russia. Meanwhile Robert LaFollete and his Farmer-Labor party, despite a strong showing in the 1918 midterms due to their populist appeal to small businesses, workers and farmers not to mention the unpopularity of the Great War, were faced with a barrage of attacks from democrats and republicans alike in the 1920 election labelling them as socialist demagogues, Marxists and Bolsheviks. The republicans, who had been in power for 24 years straight seemed on track to win another term, they nominated republican political boss, Henry Cabot Lodge who ran on a platform of getting out of Europe, keeping tariffs high and fighting both Klan and communist influence and violence. Meanwhile the democrats refused to give Bryan a fourth chance and nominated southern conservative, John Davis, Davis ran on a platform of anti communist internationalism, free trade and states' rights while condemning the Klan. LaFollette regains the farmer-labor nomination calling to break up monopolies, bust every trust, implement an income tax, separate tariffs from special interests with a tariff commission, banning child labor and a pension system. LaFollette was called a communist but the endorsement of William Jennings Bryan so LaFollette win nearly every single state in the west (with an exception to the west coast) and he made significant inroads to the industrial midwest. Davis ran a fairly weak campaign that had limited appeal out of the South, and lost fairly handily. Lodge would become the next president. Continued. Henry Cabot Lodge had an unfortunate first term, with the post war demand crash recking farmers, protests broke out across the farm belt as millions were plunged into poverty and were denied relief. Charles McNary, a republican, did try to secure farm relief but Lodge's machinations saw his bill defeated and McNary would quit the party and join the Farmer-Labor party. Meanwhile strikes continued to persist and worsen due to falling wages which were violently crushed often by nationalized national guardsmen. And with the success of many socialist revolutions abroad Lodge looked weak internationally and inept domestically as strikes persisted and the economic downturn continued. In 1924 Lodge ran for re election against New York governor Al Smith, Smith ran on a popular and moderately progressive platform of lower tariffs, a income tax (one that met the guidelines of the Fuller court) and government funding for internal improvements such as schools and infrastructure as he had done in New York. Smith's policies were popular among agrarian socialists, reactionary landowners, small businesses and labor unions alike. However Smith's Catholic faith caused him to lose the election as republicans slandered him and accused him of being a secret agent for the pope in Rome. LaFollette once again won big in the west and this time made significant progress into the unionized, isolationist Midwest. Smith was mostly confined to the south (which was threatened due to his Catholic faith and dislike for the Klan). Lodge was re elected, under his second term the economy began to improve due to cheap loans offered by many banks which helped businesses get back on their feet after 6 years of recession. Lodge left office in 1928 as a popular president who had ended the violence, stabilised the economy and restored faith in the American system. In 1928 Republican Charles Curtin, majority leader of the senate and first native American to hold that position, was nominated to continue the republican issues. Meanwhile LaFollete had passed away a few years prior so popular Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge gained the nomination, Coolidge ran on a more moderate platform simply calling for more anti trust legislation and more dynamic tariffs, restrictions on immigration and child labor as well as more limited anti monopoly policies and protections of civil liberties. The democrats nominated firebrand segregationist, James Reed in a close battle, he made Georgian senator Walter George is running mate which ensured that his campaign was confined to the south and defeat was all but insured. Coolidge had a very popular policy however the strong republican economy carried Curtin to victory. But in 1929 disaster struck! The economy collapsed and Wall street was in chaos, the banks failed, millions lost their savings and jobs alike. The republicans were dealt a great blow in the 1930 midterms and by 1932 Curtin's defeat seemed inevitable. In 1932 the populist governor of Lousinia who had masterfully avoided the worst of the depression, Huey Long gained the Farmer-Labor nomination while New York governor Al Smith was nominated again by the democrats. Long managed to eek out a victory due to huge wins out west and in the industrial midwest while Smith ate up the south and much of the east coast leaving the republicans only with Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Long passed an income tax amendment, nationalized holding companies, energy providers and dozens of banks in the most radical government yet. I think this is close enough (more dramatic though, McKinley not dying would just push TR back a little, which would have interesting effects with WW1 but this is way more interesting personally)

Mr. Beat is overly simplistic. First off, failed candidates rarely get a second chance so it’s hard to say if Lincoln would return. Secondly I feel the democratic trifecta would’ve done more to preserve the balance of power like partitioning california into a free and slave state of admitting more slave states in Arizona territory.

@@night6724 Lincoln in 1860 was a failed candidate, he lost to Stephen Douglas in a senate race in Illinois. Also who else did the republicans have? The radical republicans, without a civil war, would've not been that powerful to ignore the moderate factions. I think Lincoln makes perfect sense, though Nathanial Blake would also have been a good choice.

@@jacobite2353 In 1860 there was a bill to split california between the broth and south since the south was pro slavery. I said the arizona territory. Basically Douglas/Johnson would carve out new slave states in the south west to maintain power

@@jacobite2353 And presidential races are harder to gain support once you’ve lost. It is plausible but unlikely for Lincoln to run again. And it is hard to really call politics even looking backwards. Plus, it’s also possible the republicans begin to moderate their stance on slavery and promote a free trade republican since the concern with Lincoln was him being pro tariffs Also this video ignores the Corwin amendment which would’ve been signed by Douglas since Lincoln had planned on signing it before the civil war which would have essentially killed the issue of slavery

As such "Anglo-American" refers to English speaking people of America and "Anglo-American history" refers to their history. This may ignore the broad and diverse backgrounds of America, but it is not like we can say much against it considering we do the same thing, lol. We also arbitrarily call all people from their region(s), despite their diverse backgrounds that are as different as ours (Spanish, Lebanese, French, Indigenous, etc), "Latin Americans". It parallels with Anglo-American as a definition derived from language, and their history is often referred to as "Latin American history" more broadly.

Out of curiosity is it common to refer to USA residents as "Anglo-American" where you live in South America? Plenty of US residents have little to no English heritage, such as myself, I have some Austrian, some Polish, some Bohemian, and maybe some others but not English so far as I am aware. And plenty of US territory was never held by England or Britain. That said, I'm not offended or angry, just curious. Also, if you don't mind saying, I'm curious where in South America do you reside? Finally in conclusion I'd like to express my gratitude to you for pursuing the Teaching profession. The world can always use more teachers.

"What if Stonewall Jackson Survived and Became Governor or Virginia" sounds like the sort of video to act as a sequel to a video discussing a possible late Civil War; who knows what Jackson would have been up to had he not died during the war

Well here's two more interesting things. One is Gatling guns, which just came into use right at the end of the civil war in our timeline. With a later Civil war, they would be in use right from the start. Try not to think of Pickett's charge (shiver). The other interesting thing is that the Prussian army sent officers to observe the Civil War. In TTL the civil war would clash with the Austro-Prussian war, so they would either not go, or else learn different lessons if they did go.

it was not inevitable. Only 4 states seceded by extremely narrow margins and I feel Douglas/Johnson would do more to secure slave state powers

@@iammrbeat Basically, in early 1861, only 4 states seceded with 2 more joining later on. The majority of these conventions were fairly divisive even having razor thin votes to secede. After the attack on Fort Sumter and union mobilization of the army lead to the last 4 states to secede. Several of these states including Virginia and i think Missouri even had unionist senators. On top of that, Douglas and Johnson could have promoted more slave states or to sign the corwin amendment which had already past congress by 1861. Congress also passed a bill to create a new state by splitting California into 2 near the end of 1860 that passed both chambers of congress On top of that, the south was more industrialized than people believe and the outer south had begun to industrialize faster and part of the problem for the CSA was the fact the border states were the primary source for coal and iron.

@@iammrbeatThroughout the 1840s and 1850s with the exception of the Spanish/Portuguese most European countries banned slavery in their colonies. Moreover, Britain concluded numerous bilateral treaties with South American states banning slavery. Most of these schemes involved manumission in exchange for compensation of former owners. In fact, manumission societies were common in the Carolinas and the Highland South. Any number of small changes in state laws that regulated manumission, British policies pressuring the United States in the same way other countries were treated, or even if the Quakers had not migrated out of North Carolina to the Midwest could have resulted in an alternate abolition not involving a violent uprising by slave owners. If you play out the No Polk scenario that AHH did, this is a likely outcome.
