Despite only getting involved in the war in 1917, the United States was one of the most influential nations during the first world war thanks to their sheer economic weight. Who American supported, traded with, loaned money to and generally supported had the massive advantage of the strongest world economy on their side. In our timeline, this side was the Entente, who even before 1917 enjoyed massive trade relations with the US keeping the economies afloat, and American loans keeping their budgets tight.
