Check out my latest video from the "Alternative History" playlist: "What if Biafra Had Become Independent? [1967-1970]", in which we look at the Igbo people and the history of Biafra, the secessionist region of Nigeria which split away from 1967-1970 during the terrible "Nigerian/Biafran conflict".

This is a brilliant analysis until near the end. With respect, the Free Biafra movement under Mazi Nnnamdi Kanu and others of the Indigenous People of Biafra group today is strong among millions of Igbo people. I await the day of the establishment of an independent and prosperous Republic of Biafra. Thanks very much for posting this informative and intelligent overview of the historic situation of Biafra.

Thanks for that, much appreciated! Yeah its true, tbh I focused so much on the history but I confess that I don't know nearly enough about current Nigerian politics, and given the headache which has been my Irish videos I thought it best to not embroil myself in another contentious foreign issue (I have Igbo ancestry but no family links, so its something I need to do more research on that couldn't have been done within the time frame I'd set myself for this video, unfortunately!

If separation of the Eastern Nigeria occured, then the Western Nigeria could have followed suit. That idea did not sit well with the head of state at the time. It was an existential level threat for the rulers, that's why they took it seriously.

Thanks so much for that, I didn't want to mention it whilst filming, but upon reflection I thought I'd include some family history. Didn't want to make the audience think I have a bias, as I confess I don't know enough about Nigerian politics today to comment on whether Biafra should become independent nowadays.

The Hausa and Fulani are actually very different ethnically, culturally and linguistically. The Fulani Sokoto Caliphate first conquered the Hausa and their elites adopted much of Hausa culture. So that the traditional representatives of the Hausa and Fulani are the same aristocratic class today. 1:52 Igbo migration patterns might actually screw that number up so that the share of their population currently living in the South East be less than that, also unlike the Yoruba and Hausa that large population is very concentrated in relatively small area. That death penalty and 14 years in prison is maximum sentence, most likely in the South not much will happen to you (unless you are caught by some ethnic or muslim militia, then you're in hot soup) similarly in the North, more likely you get sent to jail than killed but executions have been recorded in the North especially. 3:34 Not just Yoruba had Obas but also other people in the Ebi/Oduduwa civilization area. Like the Benin most famously. 3:48 They are mostly Abrahamic(both Christian and Muslim) but native religions retain a public presence and higher adherence. 4:25 yeah, that's bullshit alot of people had democracies to different extents from the Igbos as you mention but also Muslim Kharijites, Hui Chinese etc. 4:37 BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE Nri monarchy was the hereditary AlaEze(Earth Priest) position. However, the civilization and kingdom had alot of title societies (cults to certain gods and guilds combined) that were meritocratic, democratic and gentocratic. Now the AlaEze had very specific roles tied to his position as the Earth Priest and most powers rested in the Umunna (The council of all adult men) that did most other roles and had the most public power in society (think of it like a parliament with direct democracy). There was also an Umunne(The council of adult women) for women to gather and make their own politically binding decisions. This stuff about the King being the Earth Priest and having certain very defined role was the norm for all other later Igbo states, so much so that some of them had several "kings" each a Hereditary priest with their own clearly defined roles. 5:15 Igbo idea on the self made man is our Ikenga philosophy search "Ikenga the medicine shell" on youtube to know more. Also since you're geneologically Igbo how would you like to join an Igbo History and Culture discord server?. 13:05 I don't think you are explaining well why Northerners didn't want independence. Quite simply, they were favoured by the British who saw they as half civilized and martial while they saw the Igbos as unloyal to their Empire. That's why they gave North great autonomy to continue to be ruled by Emirs who refused western education while in the south they installed warrant chiefs(quislings) to rule over peoples and when the people rejected these traitors or any other colonial mandate, they were frequently put down in force. And at independence time this favouritism had come to bite the northerners in the ass as the Southerners had become more adapted to the British government system and ran much of the government, which is why they rather continue being ruled by the Brits than half-half with other Africans. 13:33 To other Northerners or Whites, as this video shows. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ihrJB7Lmx9I.html 21:55 The French only supported the Biafrans for a few months (like 3) until the Brits found out and the West pressured the French out of it. Joint Church Aid, American and Polish voluntaries did more for the Biafran people than the French government ever did. 22:10 Again the French aid lasted for like 3 months while the war was like 3 years. The French aid played practically nil to the Biafran war effort. If anything the 70 - 90% supply of weapons to the Nigerians by Britain shows that it was the Nigerians sucking on the teet of foreign aid. 22:26 The Nigerian state already teaches French as a secondary language, again as a secondary language. 23:01 The American people might have been somewhat sympathetic but the American state provided no support to Biafra 24:14 Israel supported both sides SELLING weapons to BOTH, China provided no real support to Biafra, of the African states only Ivory coast provided any real support in form of loans a 10th of the little the Biafrans got from France, the rest were cheer leaders. 26:46 It wasn't because people converted their money to the Biafran currency, No alot of people maintained significant savings in the Pound but to further strangle Biafra, the Nigerians switched from the pound to the Nigerian Pound so that Biafrans wouldn't have been able to buy anything through black markets. Then they siezed all Biafran assets in Banks, Nigeria and earlily captured Biafran lands. They also refused to convert Pounds to Nigerian pounds after the war. All of these were intentional to punish the Biafrans by making them completely destitute. 27:00 A peace offering would have been returning the money in bank accounts and properties in Nigeria and borderland Biafra that was siezed, that was an insult to give $20 pounds to each household and many people didn't get it. 28:04 the study is half correct. If independence is without war most Biafrans would vote for independence. The only reason most aren't pushing for independence is fear of the Nigerian army. 28:10 Nigerian Nationalism is still not really that powerful and most Biafrans still complain of government ethnic discrimination of their people, that's why they have mostly moved away from the public to the private sector. 28:22 A bit the other way around. The older generation still have the horrors of the war in their minds and while yes the younger generation has more Nigerian Nationalists it also has more serious Separatists. All that happened is that the scared centre of "let things just continue" diminished. Remember that the first pro-Biafran independence group since the war happened in 1999 call MASSOB, so happened by that younger generation and the most public one (who's founder, Nnamdi Kanu is now on a mock trial) started like 2012, again by that younger generation. Also remember that Nigeria like Austria-Hungary has many ethnic groups within it. Instead of nationalism forming an Austro-Hungarian people, it tore that state apart into smaller nations. I see no reason why rising nationalism in Nigeria won't just further assert super-ethnicities like the Edekiri(Yoruba is the largest sub-ethnic of this super ethnicity). 29:11 All that would have had to have gone differently is this. There is a Yoruba general whose name I forget but was accused of coup plotting by the Nigerians and fled to Biafra, he lead a force that nearly invaded Lagos but stopped and retreated. Rumours started to grow again that this time he wanted to overthrow Ojukwu and was executed for that. All that he would have needed to do is invade Lagos then and end the war. Or more background for this. There is a reason why the coup plotters and coup stoppers were both Igbo, because the Igbos had rose and dominated much of the army officer core and these Igbos were ejected from the Nigerian army when the war started. Both armies weren't in prime shape but the Biafran one had more and better officers. If they struck quickly and decisively, they could have one and that Yoruba general above was proof of that. And this in my opinion would be a more interesting turn out especially given the doctrine of the Ahiara declaration. "Our struggle has far-reaching significance. It is the latest recrudescence in our time of the age-old struggle of the black man for his full stature as man. We are the latest victims of a wicked collusion between the three traditional scourges of the black man - racism, Arab-Muslim expansionism and white economic imperialism. Playing a subsidiary role is Bolshevik Russia seeking for a place in the African sun. Our struggle is a total and vehement rejection of all those evils which blighted Nigeria, evils which were bound to lead to the disintegration of that ill-fated federation. Our struggle is not a mere resistance - that would be purely negative. It is a positive commitment to build a healthy, dynamic and progressive state, such as would be the pride of black men the world over... ...Since in the thinking of many white powers a good, progressive and efficient government is good only for whites, our view was considered dangerous and pernicious: a point of view which explains but does not justify the blind support which these powers have given to uphold the Nigerian ideal of a corrupt, decadent and putrefying society. To them genocide is an appropriate answer to any group of black people who have the temerity to attempt to evolve their own social system. When the Nigerians violated our basic human rights and liberties, we decided reluctantly but bravely to found our own state, to exercise our inalienable right to self-determination as our only remaining hope for survival as a people. Yet, because we are black, we are denied by the white powers the exercise of this right which they themselves have proclaimed inalienable. In our struggle we have learnt that the right of self-determination is inalienable, but only to the white man."

Thanks for the History lesson, its really in-depth and has taught me a lot, but I'll be real, there's only so much that I know from the History here and even doing this video stretched my knowledge past its prior limits. Im not on Discord but I am interested in learning more about Igbo history, although the level of depth won't be as deep as yours clearly is due to me not having as much of a connection to it as I do for England. My Grandfather was Igbo, but as no one from his family kept in contact with my family I have always been closer culturally to England and Barbados (my other 2 places of family origin)

As a fellow Igbo I would largely agree with you, however, I don't feel personally connected enough to it due to the estrangement between my Grandfather's family, and thus I do not feel qualified to speak more on the current situation today. In 1967, absolutely, but I don't know enough about present day Nigeria, in all honesty.
