Please don't hate me... But this is my first time hearing about Burial... and BOI is Archangel special. I normally don't gravitate towards the dance/dubstep scene but this beat... It's different. Maybe it's the way the vocals are pitched/morphed... But Will mate, you did a crazy job at recreating it - Plus the way you went a step further to show us the importance of this piece of music, you were made for this. You need to check out more Burial. Don't like to use the term often but he's a genius. Made one of the most influential albums in electronic music of all time on rudimentary software. There's been a lot of copycats and nobody has came close to matching the emotion and uniqueness of Burial. Try 'come down to us' it's beautiful.

As much as I adore Burial, I don't believe this Soundforge myth. There's way too much sound design involved and sound processing, and the EQ is way too good to be achieved with just Soundforge. There's presence of bass synths too (and pad synths in his later EPs such as Street Halo), something which cannot be done with just Soundforge, unless you heavily low pass a track. Also, even if the drums are swingy, the tempo is constant and it doesn't vary. Maybe the idea was initially made in Soundforge and then transported to Ableton (with or without the help of Kode9 / Hyperdub). The whole point of this is that it takes a lot more audio engineering mastery to make stuff like this in Soundforge, rather than just using a DAW.
i used to think the same (and it doesn’t matter at all), but i don't anymore. the bass synths are likely samples (like everything else) and he reused sounds with slightly different processing (like EQ, which was definitely in SF) over and over again. the tracks have a constant BPM because the drum loops were built first as loops and then copy/pasted for the duration of the tunes (also why the drums are mostly static or with one or two extra elements added for the second half of a track). as for the professional sound, the album was professionally mastered by people who know what they're doing (and even so it's still pretty low fi). but if you listen to untrue with soundforge in mind, it actually makes more sense.... the biggest tells imo are: the arrangements (arcangel is built around a 12 bar phrase instead of the more DAW intuitive 16, shit like that), there are discontinuity clicks everywhere (especially in the places where you'd be copy/pasting waveforms, eg between drum loops), and the places where he does break outside of grid (the gaps in homeless that are slightly too long would be way easier to come up with in SF than in a DAW automating the master tempo track or whatever) and you can hear such a big change in sound from the releases after when he’d switched over, like all of the shit im talking about switched up almost immediately after this era
