What if California Was An Island?

Back in the 17th century the Spanish believed California was a large island simply because they didn't explore it. So what if in an alternate timeline, they were right and California was an island. How would this change history?

If California was an island, I doubt the 2 mile cliffs would extend to the coast. There isn't much of a precedent on Earth for such stuff to happen. Plus, you have to factor in erosion.
@alex_zetsu
@alex_zetsu 3 года назад
In the past when continents split, it is believed they had really steep cliffs, comparable to the 2 mile cliffs. But let's say we ignore anything before the Jurassic Period on the account maybe the geologists didn't get their calculations right and focus on the primate era. We still have the Cliffs of Dover. You might argue that that's not as high, but it's basically enough to bar crossing the Strait of Cortez for a pre-industrial society. And even after humans get excavation tools, who's going to remove those cliffs to get a port when Sonora works just fine? So in then end, not much changes with the smaller cliffs unless there are footpaths through them at reasonable inclines for humans to walk.
@2DMax00
@2DMax00 2 года назад
@@alex_zetsu Well, going aroubd the horn of africa worked "just fine" too, but we still built the suez canal. connecting the island of california to the mainland physically, via bridges or anything else, would drastically improve on the amount of fuel being spent in oceanic transportation.
@alex_zetsu
@alex_zetsu 2 года назад
@@2DMax00 Oceanic travel is actually cheaper than truck if you're not in a hurry, but ship is slow I guess saving time is something humans like to do. But at least early on in the video, the things he suggested would still largely play out since until such a project is done, the cliffs are an effective barrier.
@shingbarackabe8035
@shingbarackabe8035 2 года назад
Who says that California would even have the exact same geography as real life, considering this video is literally about the opposite? If this video is based off of how the Spanish portrayed the Island of California, it's much more likely they would have portrayed the strait in between California and the mainland just as how it appears Between Baja California and Sonora, for example.
@xgcsurreal2608
@xgcsurreal2608 2 года назад
Yes but that isn’t what that areas geography is. That area where the strait is, is mountains and hills with high elevation so they would be cliffs. Plus the environment wouldn’t really change it would still be desert-ish because the mountains on California island would still block cool sea air from reaching the area thus stopping erosion from taking place with rain

I can see a bridge being proposed between the isle and the mainland, but could you imagine what kind of undertaking that would be? (Edit: Oh boy. While this has resulted in the discussion I was looking for, it seems y'all have missed what I was pointing out. Which was "How ridiculous would it be if someone suggest to build a bridge, and what kind of undertaking would unfold if they even tried to?". That's why I used the word "proposed". I was simply pointing out a humorous thought. But I am glad to see a general discussion on how it wouldn't work, and suggestions that work around the problem. Interesting concept.)

It would me the longest bridge in the world by a long shot but with the added problem of it being 2 whole miles above sea level to start with. The supports would be 3 or 4 miles tall and near impossible to create or transport until maybe the late 1900s to early 2000s. If there was to be a bridge connecting the island it wouldnt be made yet, at best it would currently be under construction

Making California an island would require more than just taking a swipe at the map with a blue magic marker and saying that area's ocean, with everything else the same. It would require major geographic and geological changes. In short, those 13,000-foot cliffs almost certainly wouldn't be there. What would? I've no idea. It could be anything from lesser (but still precipitous) cliffs to forests and beaches. My point is not that this video is bad. Given the strait and the cliffs, Cody does a good job of explaining how things would be different. But declaring California an island requires so many assumptions in regards to geography that it's impossible to say, "That's how it would be." You can't even say that's how it would likely be. I could just as easily declare that there are those gentle beaches there, or that the strait is only a mile wide, or whatever I like. As I said, given the assumptions he chooses to make, this is a good video. But they are assumptions, and Cody did choose to make them. If he'd chosen something else, it would have been very different. Say, maybe that happened in an alternate history!
@byzantinemapper6145
@byzantinemapper6145 5 лет назад
In my opinion, 13K foot cliffs are utterly impossible. Why? Because of erosion. The massive cliffs would erode over time, to a flat coast. Same thing for the now West Coast. The geography of California would be like Japan, with mountains in the middle. They could've been independent for real because the natives could've kept an interest on it because of its strategic location between the Pacific and North America.

@Vitalis94
@Vitalis94 6 лет назад
+You'reThatMantis 30 years war is too late. Even with Catholic victory, it would be impossible to hold all these states together. Few notes: - California wouldn't be COMPLETELY irrelevant - the central farm lands would still be vital to the nation's economy, but it would take a few more days to ship it around to the ports. (More profit for them, though.) - Senora, being so deeply south and vital to international trade... Would its prosperity leak into Mexico? Would we see a more robust Mexican economy as a result, and different relations with the States as a result of that? - Less important: Tourism would be much improved by the cliffs. You've got beaches west, redwoods north, mountains east, and cliffs hemming them in... Easily the most naturally-fascinating region. Probably would help the western desert regions by selling short puddle-jumps into California, because all the transportation and commerce splits around them north/south once you leave the plains.
@Salsuero
@Salsuero 5 лет назад
Except those cliffs wouldn't exist. The only reason they "could" is due to uplift by forcing the land California sits on eastward into the greater continent. An island wouldn't have been driven upward like that by the ocean. And natural processes called erosion would've carved those cliffs back and downward over time. They just wouldn't be there. Unless some human (or extraterrestrial) force literally carved the giant channel out of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it wouldn't be the way it's toyed with as an idea in this video. And it's Sonora... with two O's.

Depends on how the island was made. If it happened then it would most likely be caused by the fault lines, and if we look at the best example of a a rift fault, the East African Rift, it’s characterized by deep, flat valleys and walls, as if you removed some blocks out from the middle. Of course, it wouldn’t have those massive mountains there in the first part. In fact, there wouldn’t be mountains at all.

I don't mean to be a party-pooper, but i just wanna say those California cliffs wouldn't existed. Even taking out the plate tectonics argument: millions of years of rainfall would have weathered it down to the shape of the modern day california coast - if not lower in elevation. Maybe in the southwest there would have been huge huge cliffs, but because the area to the north would've already inhabited it. If anything it could have become its own seperate ancient empire, and then who knows.

With California being an island, it would have very interesting implications on the local wildlife. While it would still have a good chunk of the wildlife on the mainland North America, it's relative isolation would make the wildlife more unique. And with you mentioning this here 2:04 it struck a kind of brain cord on me: IF the extinction of overkill on ice age megafauna was true (though I kinda doubt it to be so completely, but that's for another topic), then it would be possible if the ice age megafauna got there and the island's isolation made the tribes get there sooner, it could be possible for the megafauna to survive a bit longer than in our timeline. But it could also mean that other types of ancient animals or animal lineages could've survived there as well and what kind of animals they are could affect it's imagery or even how people view the island (think like how kangaroos define Australia or how lemurs made Madagascar even exist in the American minds and get a movie XD). *sees the cliffs part* Whoah, with that the biology of the island would definitely be EXTREMELY different than the mainland in that case!

Now, how about "If Scandinavia made an arms pact during WW2". Here is some things I feel could change how that would go: 1. Norway Sweden and Denmark work together to improve their military, fearing someone might try to annex them for strategic purposes. Be it Germany or England. 2. With Sweden's steel production, and with information about England and Germany's new tank production, Scandinavia quickly gains a reasonably big armoured presence. 3. With an increase in oil demands, Norway starts searching for oil much earlier, making this "union of arms" more self reliant. 4. With Denmark bordering Germany, they're able to gain some information, such as the plans to invade Norway and Denmark. This means they would be prepared. The rest is up to you. Would love to hear how this change would alter how history goes. Maybe the war would end even earlier? Maybe Scandinavia would rise to be a global military power? Who knows? But it would be fun to hear.
@KevinShihKevinFresh
@KevinShihKevinFresh 6 лет назад
That would greatly affect how WW2 happened. First, the Tirpitz would've never been stationed in the fjords of Norway, and that it would have helped protect British supply ships in the lend-lease program. It could have also been a staging point for D-Day, as it is bordering Germany.

That'll have negative effects on European colonization and Europe as a whole, a muslim Spain would possibly cut Italy, southern france, and any other mediterranean nation from exiting the mediterranean sea except for other muslim nations. This means that France, the UK, and the Netherlands would be the only European nations colonizing, and these nation's power combined wouldn't be enough to colonize as much as Europe did in our timeline did. The middle east would also be a colonization competitor, nations like Andalusia (muslim spain), Morocco, and Tunisia would start to colonize other parts of the world.

I think this California would be a mix between Alaska and Hawaii. California had *a lot* of oil back then, and in this day, there are many oil wells still operating. And of course, there was the famous gold rush in North California. In the alt timeline though, it's very possible that the discovery would occur later, much like Alaska. I could see this California as major tourist spot like Hawaii, with many beautiful beaches and mountains. But yeah, the _huge_ downside of being separated from the mainland would be the very high cost of living, because of the Jones Act, places like Hawaii and Puerto Rico cannot trade with the outside world on their own, and every product goes to Alaska, Hawaii, and this new California must arrive from the mainland. This probably wouldn't sit well to the Californians, so there would've been stronger push for independence than our timeline.

that said, I'm not sure the cliffs would be nearly like you put it. If anything, it might be more similar to Big Sur, just with less trees, and more of the Sonoran Desert feel. Quite possibly it might even resemble Gibraltar strait, with tall steep mountains on either side, and a way through them, and places to set up a port along the coast. Assuming this strait is as wide as the Gulf of California, taking away our beautiful Death Valley and Mojave Deserts, then going north on the east side of the Sierra Mountains and possibly thinning out at certain regions, but not too much (say the thinnest region is where Bishop, CA sits currently), and then turning towards the coast at Portland, it is a given that much of the mountain ranges would be drastically different. Given geological time and the rising and lowering of sea levels, there is bound to be some terraced action going on (look at the region south of Santa Cruz, there is a lot of terracing due to sea level difference throughout the millennia). then there would be interesting conversations about ocean currents.... do the cold waters of alaska split and move south along the strait? do the warm waters from Mexico move up the strait? how far? is the strait largely brackish water??? Assuming the thinnest part is where Bishop lies, is it possible to build a majestic bridge there? Kinda like the bridge in Istanbul?

Taking the Gulf of California as representative of the depth, no, except at the northern end (since the faults are rifting south-to-north). If you cut-n-paste the GoC over the Cali-Nevada/Cali-Arizona border, everything south of about Sacremento would be more than 300m deep. Of course it could be a narrow passage and then you could build a really impressive suspension or cable-stayed bridge, but then if it's a narrow passage the erosion of the cliffs has probably closed it up anyway.

I'm pretty sure that there wouldn't be enough land to make an Arizona. From what I saw of that map, and considering the mountains, your area would be too low in population. It would probably be part of New Mexico or Sonora, your other beach destination.

That country song about having oceanfront property in Arizona would suddenly mean something completely different.

@@kittykittybangbang9367, it’s a movie about one of the Big Boss clones from Metal Gear going to a separated California in order to retrieve the president’s daughter. It has been a while since I watched it last, so some of the facts might be wrong...

I think the amount of gold and silver in california would make it just as important as it is today.

But with such a sea between the mainland U.S. and California wouldn't that cause weather patterns to change and potentially allow more moisture and precipitation to the dessert and mountainous areas?

A really interesting video. I feel like there would be two scientific differences tho. 1. Cliffs that high would most certainly collapse, so I don’t think that issue of isolating cliffs would be quite as prevalent. If anything the rocky sea shore and slope of rubble into the sea from the collapsed cliffs would make the Cortez strait unwieldy to navigate. 2. You describe the new west coast as a desert (like Nevada Arizona etc) but in this case it’s connected to the ocean directly so I would think it would be more fertile. Certainly still desert in some areas, but the coasts I would think would be more inhabitable and green. Thirdly what about the gold? Certainly the Oregon trail etc would be completely different and getting to California would be harder, but the motivation of gold would still be there.
