What If Conferences Were By Location in CFB?

For the past decade, conference realignment has been the talk of college football. Conferences decide rivalries, futures, money, and championships. But what if what we know as college football has been different from the beginning? What if we did all conferences by location instead of the way they organically came about? That's what I talk about in this video. Let me know in the comments what you think!

What conferences were your favorites? And are there any other ways to make conferences other than by location for a future video?

College Football Chronicle I liked the AAC power 6 conference. Also, maybe do conference realignment with academics being the main factor. Finally, this idea might be a little less exciting but you could do conferences based on alphabetical order. For example, Alabama, Akron, Arkansas, and all the schools that r in the next few letters could be in one conference. You could do a power 5 and a group of five for that

Ninja Danny the biggest problem is that no matter how the cake is cut, there’s gonna be some conferences and teams that’ll be better then their neighbors and fellow conference members.But overall, I think the power 6 is the best idea and has the power schools the most evenly distributed.

the power 6/group 6 is honestly the best option out of a massive CFB relignment. And it can still lead to some very fun and interesting games. As well as a fun and exciting 24 team playoff, where the top 3 from each conference make it. Imagine a 12 game season, then another 48 of the most exciting and important games to end the season. I'm down for it. Sign me up for the realignment committee.

Thank you! I went to WVU when it was a member of the Big East, and that made sense. As students (or alumni) we could drive to away games in 8 hours or less. Our rivals made sense, especially Pitt and Penn State. Now, every team in our conference is on the other side of the Mississippi...CRAZY! I wish the NCAA would stop being more concerned about money, and focus simply on student/athlete education; but it is all about the money.
@nikonmark37814

It's called greed created by the evil known as corruption! The more money we spend the more we make and the better athletes we can buy, that's what the NCAA has become. The fans are no longer a consideration. I grew up in an era when we had one nationally televised game and one of the local schools were televised. MONEY = EVIL and EVIL = CORRUPTION!
@zubstep
@zubstep Год назад
Hey, I totally echo the sentiment, but PSU was never in the Big East. On Pitt, you are 100% correct; those were conference games. As it happened, the founding of the Big East, to put a long story-short, was as a basketball-first (and keep PSU out) conference steered by some nasty petty politics and off-field animosities b/w the people running the institutions (Syracuse, Pitt and Villanova vis a vis PSU at the time). It's a long, unpleasant and short-sighted story. Due to the money football TV rights would later command, the Big East formula was doomed to fracture at some point under greater financial incentives. As an independent, PSU could and did agree to scheduling WVU more often especially, but this obviously changed once they joined the B1G. Incidentally, super looking forward to the series coming up b/w WVU and PSU next season. Should be great atmospheres and a ton of fun. Always have enjoyed running into WVU alumni, having worked with several, and got some neighbors who went there as well. All the best to your mountaineers!

For Power 6, the Big10 east would be a powerhouse. It would be weird having Iowa State with the Big 10. Also, if we went by location, I think Iowa should be in the "Great Lakes Conference" because Iowa has rivalries with Minnesota and Wisconsin. These rivalries date back up to 100 years.

I feel like if the first map was how the NCAA was originally designed, and was kept permanent, it would likely make some teams that are poorer quality a stronger program today. If a team like Sand Diego State was playing USC and UCLA, or if TCU was always playing Texas they could be a stronger program today. The greats today has to come from somewhere, and obviously size of school is a huge factor, but the strength of a team’s conference was likely one as well. There are plenty of smaller schools that have proven themselves to be tough opponents that can’t just be slept on (Norte Dame has 8,000 students)

I’m sure most think the same way. l would add one other wrinkle to this equation. That there should be a upper tier of teams that average over 30-35k regular home attendance over a prescribed number of years, that they get in (if they choose), or out of the top tier of teams. This again rewards the fans. This will set goals for up and coming programs, and give them a reward for their efforts. It will also punish a few teams who have little fan support, by putting them on notice that they will have to temporarily be dropped to a 2nd tier if they don’t increase attendance. This would rid a team like Alabama or Ohio St from playing in a conference with a school that has a 25k stadium and averages 19k at home.

Hawaii, San Diego State, BYU and UNR belongs in a P6. If you do 16? Those 4 would fit. New Mexico State is unwanted. I could see Northern Arizona in their place. Lamar, Jacksonville State, Youngstown State, South Dakota State, Sacramento State, Eastern Kentucky, Towson, Stony Brook, Missouri State, Illinois State, Indiana State, North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M and the likes are good targets. Tennessee State as well. D2's Midwestern State, West Texas A&M (former FBS independent), Central Oklahoma and CSU-Dominguez Hills (have close to 30,000 seat stadium that is on campus that they share with a pro-soccer team which an NFL team used it temp.) Wichita State, Long Beach State, UTRGV, Fullerton State all looking to restart football. North Florida and FGCU are interesting ones looking at starting football. West Florida and North Alabama could be options as well. With the virus that is going around? The schools at the lower levels may make moves were a lot of the small private schools could close for good. D3 could be gone, the larger schools moving up to D1 and the rest would merged what is left of D2, D3 and NAIA. D1 would be broken into 1A and 1AA for all sports which would mean about 180 schools at the FBS levels.

The reasons we have conferences is grouping schools by stadium size, attendance, fan base and that usually correlates with performance. I would like to see more Independents. I’d like to see teams that can’t compete in the entirety of these conferences be given an offer as an Affiliated Independent where they may retain 3-5 games including their rivals - Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College, Rutgers, Northwestern. Blowup the American and those teams Independents. And the team with the highest ranking plays Notre Dame for the Independent Championship in St. Louis.

If you were going to move the AAC's geographic locale back to the northeast, you should have just renamed it the Big East like it used to be. Also, wouldn't an East/West division setup make more sense for the Northwestern Conference? It wouldn't be perfect either, but there's a clear space between the 7 western schools and 5 eastern ones, as opposed to awkwardly linking Colorado and Wyoming with Iowa and Illinois.

By putting Texas and Oklahoma in different divisions of the same conference you are doing away with a 114 year old rivalry, or forcing them to play the same conference opponent in a non-conference type game each year, or doing that stupid thing the SEC does where you only play certain teams from the other division in your conference. New Mexico State shouldn’t be in the AAC considering how god awful they are

Yeah WVU would have a fit and a half if they ever had to share a conference with us known as "Little Brother" in Marshall.

Why not put Ga. State in the Mid Atlantic and move App State to the Cumberland? That seems to be a closer to your map outline. Other than that, this looks pretty good. Of course, the same 5 or 6 teams would always be in the playoffs.😒

This, but give Missouri and Iowa state back to the Big12, move A&M and UH to the SEC, and Cincinnati to the big 10

rewatching this a year later and I think the Group of 6 and power 6 ways are the best for realignment but with the Playoff committee going from 4 to 12 teams relatively soon I dont think realignment will happen for another 10 years maybe to be completely honest, because it always feels like realignment happens every 10 years to begin with.

Organizing conferences geographically makes sense, but creating 12 conferences doesn't. Create 8 super conferences with 16-18 teams each, with 2, 8-9 team divisions each. The winner of each division within the conferences play for the conference championship. Those 8 conference champions play for the CFP national championship. That format would create more parity in recruiting and would finally allow the CFP championship to be decided on the field instead of by coaches, sportswriters, or computer polls.

Like the second group of six other then I would a 6 more FCS schools. Eastern Kentucky, Sam Houston State, Villanova, VMI, The Citadel and Youngstown State, Missouri State (Maybe) and Delaware (Maybe) been wanting to make the Jump. I think it would be cool to pull the server Academy and bring up VMI and the Citadel and add a couple close fcs School to make a Service Academy Group of Five Coference so the commander-in -chief Trophy is always live and I can See VMI vs Navy become another major Rivalry. Plus there group of Five would be granted the rights to the Armed Forces Bowl, Military Bowl and Independence Bowl and possibly College football Play off. Also the SEC second group might go as the falling. SEC North(River Division) Kentucky (LSU) (Battle for the Burbon Barrel) Louisville (Auburn)(had a fun kick off game when Lamar was a freshman) Memphis (Mississippi State) Missouri (Arkansas) Tennessee (Alabama) Vanderbilt (Old Miss)
