Try to simulate this scenario: 1. The Sun will be class M star. 2. Jupiter sized planet orbits it in Goldilocks zone 3. Place a few earth sized planet as moons over this Jupiter- all of them with locked rotation. This scenario would overcome problem of terrestrial planet tidally locked to close class M star. Terrestrial planet(moon) will be tidally locked to gas planet.

It sounds like a proof of concept on how to negate tidal lock that would otherwise occur in direct orbit around an MxV star. Would Earth have a stable orbit around said gas giant?

I think the Moon is too close to Earth to have its own moons. Moons around our Moon would either crash on the Moon or be captured by Earth. I think that's a general problem with moons. They would need to orbit their planet real far, or be real massive, to keep their own moons. That would be an interesting project to see where the Moon would have to be, to have a moon!

I've been waiting forever for this episode! Thanks! Would you do one where Jupiter is where the Earth is now and then find a habitable zone for Earth within Jupiter's orbit?
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 7 лет назад
Between the added heat from the tidal heating and the significant energy input from Jupitershine assuming Jupiter was orbiting the Sun where the Earth is now and Earth at the same 330,000 km distance from Jupiter as in this video Jupiter would illuminate the Earth at ~1.25% the level that Sol itself does with reflected light. Not sure if US2 takes that into account though and while that might not sound like much it's still north of 2 Petawatts or to put that into perspective the equivalent of a 500 kiloton nuclear weapon per second. Or put another way enough energy every second to cover humanity's current energy demands (total primary energy demand that is) for around 3-4 millennia. So yeah kinda makes a difference add to that the fact that the tidal heating was peaking at about double that amount again and yeah I think would need to move Jupiter a few million km further out to stop Earth from experiencing global warming quite a bit faster and more drastic than currently assumed. On the upside totally gotta get me some geothermal energy stocks if this happens.
@Barnardrab
@Barnardrab 7 лет назад
What if Earth was positioned at the edge of Jupiter's hill sphere?
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 7 лет назад
True that would reduce both of those effects pretty significantly then again also come to thing of it I forgot to take into account the fact that Jupiter would eclipse the Sun for hours each orbit too so it might balance out that way.
@Barnardrab
@Barnardrab 7 лет назад
I imagine that it would be best to orbit Jupiter's poles instead of the equator, otherwise we'd sweep through the radiation belt.
@davidroddini1512
@davidroddini1512 7 лет назад
Barnard Rabenold I don't know if earth would be habitable if Jupiter orbited in earth's orbit and earth orbited Jupiter because we would get tremendous tidal forces from Jupiter in addition to the heat from the sun. However, if Jupiter orbited a little further from the sun than earth does (say in a mars orbit) theoretically there would be a sweet spot where the reduction in heat from the sun is exactly offset by heat from increased tidal forces. That would be interesting to see.

I like that idea. Put Jupiter at Earth's distance, then put Earth into Jupiter orbit, but make it a high orbit or inclination to reduce the number of eclipses from happening on every orbit (for climate purposes). Pull Earth's moon in so it continues to orbit Earth.

Jupiter did once orbit closer to Sun within its goldilocks zone, until Sun captured Saturn. Jupiter was attracted to Saturn and moved out, freezing Ganymede. Earth and Mars were tidally locked to Saturn which was a brown dwarf star at that time, considering Earth and Mars closely share Saturn's axial tilt.

This didn’t look at sanario of the expanding sun in the future, where you would want to change the orbit of the earth to prevent it from being absorbed by the sun. That’s where a Jupiter orbit makes sense as at that time the core of earth might not work as well as it used too, and Jupiter’s magnetosphere would act as a shield for the expanding star.

@attarraihannazhif1099
@attarraihannazhif1099 7 лет назад

@seraphina985
@seraphina985 7 лет назад
+rmatt24 Indeed there would be no direct solar illumination at all not even the corona, that said it may not actually be completely pitch black depending where the other moons are they would all be crescents if any illuminated ones were visible at the time but depending how close they were in their orbit several of the larger ones could reflect quite a bit of light despite the lower solar intensity out there. Especially when you bare in mind our moon is really quite dark compared to such as Europa. Jupiter itself would be gargantuan in the sky some 48 times the diameter of the moon or about 2,300 times the visual size while the Sun would be 5 times smaller in diameter or around 25 times smaller in area. Making it some 240 times smaller in diameter than Jupiter or 57,600 times smaller in area. That said even if the Earth were tidally locked to Jupiter the fact that it would eclipse the Sun every day (unless Earths orbit was inclined way outside the plane of most of the orbits in the system) that doesn't mean it would be dark all the time, the Jupitershine would actually be really bright even with the sun being 25 times dimmer, the 2300 times larger size in the sky would still make it about 90 times as bright as the full moon where we are now. Ok sure that would still be more than 20,000 times dimmer than the noon Sun here on current Earth but it's still not dark you could easily walk around with just the Jupitershine and see where you were going and stuff not that you would perhaps want to you know with the whole it's goddamn freezing out there part but heh...

I recall a paperback book in the 1980s whose cover showed Earth in orbit around a gas giant. So maybe a video where Jupiter is following Earth orbit, and put the Earth around Jupiter, but at an inclination, so you get some eclipses but not on every orbit. Also, pull our moon in so it sticks with us, not ripped away.

After watching this I was curious about whether the lack of magnetic field was making the simulation evaporate the water on Titan, so I tried to make Ganymede a moon of Earth. I gave it some water and a similar thing happened. I didn't actually check whether the game gives Ganymede a magnetic field. It would be very annoying if whatever parameter the game uses to decide whether atmospheres are lost is not related to the magnetic field but a random bug, and it certainly seems like a bug. And in any case, I thought Ganymede had an ice layer? I had to give it water in the simulation since it had zero percent by default. I wish it was more realistic.

Re: Asteroid and planetary bombardments in the early Solar System (including the Late Heavy Bombardment and earlier such eras): Perhaps at one point Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest bodies in the Solar System, got into 2:1 orbital resonance, because of which the other Solar System bodies were badly shaken up. If so, that may have caused Neptune and Uranus to change places, so that Uranus, which heretofore had been farthest from the Sun, took up an orbit between Saturn and everything beyond, while Neptune took up an orbit between Uranus and the Kuyper Belt objects.Could you discuss that possibility?

It’s been said the orbit of Jupiter would have decayed as it hoovered up debris from the planetary disc. That begs the question why did Jupiter stay so far out. Why did it not keep moving inwards taking out the asteroids a and rocky planets.
