Gandalf was an instrumental character in Middle-earth, but much would have been different if he had joined Saruman in his pursuit of the One Ring and power. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about this theory and its premise in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Without Gandalf, because of him becoming Saruman's slave with a broken will it is entirely possible that the King of Rohan's mind would have never been freed from the power of Grima Wormtongue's deceptive influence over him that he had no control over. It is also because of this reason that Rohan possibly could have joined forces with Saruman as well as their ally.

I'm not convinced it would end badly either. Illuvatar demonstrated that even the discord introduced by melkor can be tamed and made to serve the ultimate goal of the great music. In other words the events may have played out differently but the end result would be the same in that it would be be that of illuvatar's will and his will alone.

I don't know if the Valar would have simply sent more Maiar to Middle Earth, since in this scenario, all of the Maiar who had come to its shores had been corrupted or lost. I think they would have called forth Eru Illuvatar, as they did at the end of the Second Age, and the results would have been catastrophic for the world.
@rredd7777

I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on the Blue Wizards, as I don't think I know the fates of the Blue Wizards and you have a talent for weaving some of the most compelling tales of Middle Earth that I've heard since Tolkien himself. I wonder how long Saruman had been corrupted by those dark thoughts and designs of his, if there's a way he could have been given the ring but not have already turned to evil.

If the Maiar “knew the fates of the Blue Wizards and didn’t search for them,” then I think the Maiar, in this hypothetical timeline, would simply know that the Blue Wizards have died because if they died, the spirits of the Blue Wizards would simply go to the Halls of Mandos, thereby notifying the Valar and Maiar of the Blue Wizards’ fate.

I like this thought experiment a lot. It shows that Gandalf really just wouldn't be Gandalf, if he acted this way. Even if Saruman managed to sway Gandalf with clever reasoning, it just wouldn't be right to see The Gray Wizard to lie to his Hobbit friends and manipulate them, even if he had only good intentions with them. As he was always about overcoming unthinkable odds and keeping some hope up to the last moment, this would be really out of character, not from the perspective of reasoning, but rather for the way Gandalf chose to walk, think and be, and he probably learned / chose to be like this long time ago. Really good job in reimagine this differently, thank you for this perspective!

When you have two players seduced by the same forces to work as one , success or no its only a matter of time before they turn on each other. Gandalfs character never gave us a hint of him entertaining nefarious deeds. When we first meet saruman he immediately gives off the untrustworthy vibe. I can't see gandalf going dark not even for a "what if" were given nothing to work on..character wise...unless I'm wrong

@shawn092182
@shawn092182 4 года назад
It's possible for things like that to happen. Even actions with good intentions can turn out badly. That's why in the original, Gandalf refused to take the one ring and use it against Sauron or to bring peace and order. Even Sauron and Saruman had "good" intentions of bringing order to middle earth. It's how they went upon doing it, is what's questionable. Melkor was the only one who wanted to destroy creation.

Always thought Christopher Lee would be the better Gandalf. After all Gandalf is often spoken in negative light by the ignorant and his travels and worries have taken their tolls upon him. Him viewed as an omen of bad news also speaks of this. Saruman should be the kind grandpa in looks, his appealing and venerable appearance complimenting his powers and character.

I think Peter Jackson wanted a more straight forward sinister view of Saruman. Also I can't help but associate Lee's Saruman with Count Dooku in Star Wars. Lee did a great job with both characters and I feel they are similar.

Another great tale, man! Always love these. LOR lore never gets old to me. Thanks for the hard work!! My favorite place in Middle Earth is Valinor in the Undying Lands. It's history and people shaped everything about Arda and I always loved how no one was allowed to visit the West unless specifically allowed to. They would not face any border guards, or terrible, magical weapon, they'd just sail and sail and sail, if the storms didn't wreck them, on into the horizon never finding it. Something very ethereal about that! Peace!!

This was really great. It's hard to say what would have happened without Gandalf's guidance and support. The Valar sent the wizards to assist in the defense of the free peoples. They were sent specifically not to use sheer power or magic to act as saviors of the world. Rather they were sent to inspire, encourage and empower the Children of Iluvatar to defend themselves. The Valar, unlike Melkor and Sauron wanted to subvert the free will of Illuvatar's creations to subservient and banal purposes. If Gandalf were in this scenario to have sided with Saruman in the war of the rings and the Valar decided that another direct intervention was the only way to defeat evil, then Arda itself would most likely have been broken again as it was when Beleriand sundered and fell into the sea. This is what the Valar had always wanted to avoid. And the consequences of them involving themselves in this conflict would certainly have killed many a folk if not drove some of the children of Illuvatar to extinction. Like you said in another recent video, evil ultimately destroys itself. Frodo was not able to destroy the ring at the end of his quest. I wonder if the Valar would truly have "felt guilty" as you said about the failure of Saruman and Gandalf enough to attempt to fix their errors by personally intervening against the Wizards and Sauron. Or, maybe knowing the consequences to Arda after they intervened to finally defeat Melkor that they would instead leave the free peoples to their dreadful fate with the hope that they could redeem their world without the interference of the higher powers. It's a really interesting question. Thank you. This was fun. I love your channel. I know only one other person in the world who has actually read and understood the Silmarillion. So this channel has been a godsend. Keep it up!

Certainly, my favorite place in Middle Earth is The Lonely Mountain, Erebor. The lone mountain standing as a warning against foes from the east that naught but fearsome dwarven warriors dwell within. Of course, the architecture of the Dwarves it to be admired, and the massive hoard of wealth stored within the mountain. It surely would have been a comfort to the nearby men of Dale and Laketown.

Another good video. I'm actually writing out a "script" to the result of the next Theory video (if it's chosen) and can send that to you if you'd like. (What if Golium had truly turned good after pledging Loyalty to Frodo.) My favorite place in Middle Earth. That's a tough one to choose. I'd have the choose the Anduin River. It's the most important body of water written about in All of Tolkien's books. Both the Hobbit, LotR, and the Silmarillion.

Your story telling was so great that I thought this actually happened. Then, halfway through the video, I realized it was just a theory. In terms of where in Middle Earth I'd like to visit, it was a tough choice, but I'm probably going to go with Gondor. I would be able to meet Aragorn and Arwen and live there.

I've been reading a lot about middle-earth lately. Meaning I got introduced to a lot of new places. Although the relaxed life of a hobbit always appealed to me, I'm gonna have to go for a dwarven city. Not gonna choose Moria, the blue mountains or the iron hills for I have to go for Erebor, the lonely mountain. Probably because we got some amazing views of this city due to the hobbit trilogy. Why erebor? Their lifestyle is realy appealing to me, work hard play hard. You work all day and after work you have a nice meal with a lot of meat. (I love my meat, so no elven city) and afterwords you go drinking with all your good friends just to do it again the next day. Thanks for making these video's. They've inspired me to start reading about middle earth instead of just watching the films over and over again. I've been with you for over 2 years and I'll be with you for many more.

It would be really cool if you would consider maybe talking over the topic of what would have happened had Saruman had been genuine (meaning him staying true to his side but still 100% convinced he needed to take the ring and use it) and overcome the corruption of the ring after getting it)
