What if Germany Stayed Neutral during World War One? | Alternate History

In today's alternate history scenario we ask what if Germany never issued the blank check to Austria, and remained neutral while Austria declared war on Serbia? Would Austria be able to fend off a coalition of enemies on all sides? Would Germany be crippled politically without their Austrian ally? Will there be a World War?

@DeanMonsieur
@DeanMonsieur 2 дня назад
@@potato0812 Perhaps I ought to have clarified that Wilhelm was particularly resentful against the English, mostly because of familial issues. It was explained in the video around 18:10 but Wilhelm was subject to traumatic medical experiences at the hands of English doctors, the same doctors who eventually failed to save his father from dying. I didn't mention it in the video since it would go too off topic, but Wilhelm also had a strange relationship with Queen Victoria, constantly seeking her attention and approval. Simultaneously he was resentful of his mother, Victoria, Princess Royal, and was constantly disrespectful to her. At the same time, he completely subverted Queen Victoria whenever she tried to influence his policymaking decisions, and it caused him to become somewhat angered at her, believing her to be 'using' his love for her as a tool to advance British interests. It's complicated, as always, with family. Wilhelm was additionally just generally erratic and impulsive, and he felt overshadowed by George V and his British family members. He had a complicated personal resentment for his English relatives and a lot of that was compounded by the naval arms race before WWI and the colonial situation in East Africa (Tanzania).

alternate history is much more interesting if the topic presented is at least somewhat probable, otherwise it's just complete gibberish. the concept that WW1 would be sparked normally with Germany "just staying neutral" is just so groundless and pointless, rendering the video kinda stupid. here's a couple alternative and much more probable solutions that could yield immensely more interesting results: - what if Franz Joseph died before 1914 and Karl swayed Austro-Hungarian empire into the camp of Entente - what could possibly break out WW1 if Russia didn't guarantee Serbia's independence - what would happen if Italy would fulfill what was expected of her in Schlieffen Plan

why do you keep claiming that Serbia had an alliance with Russia? In reality, the Russians joined the conflict between Serbia and Austria only because they were "Slavic brothers". Plus Germany would never join a regional conflict in the Balkans.

About Wilhelm's opinion of the British. No. Wilhelm hated the British. With his grandmother Queen Victoria, he was relatively close, he did not blame the accident with his hand on the British and, strangely enough, he was quite popular in British society before the war. If you want to do objective history, read both sides of the story. I understand, that history is written by the victors and that is why Wilhelm is still remembered as the tyrant the British media made him out to be during the war, but take a look at his early reign in detail, or his memoirs. The truth is not always what it seems at first glance.

What's worth mentioning is how cautious Austro-Hungarian leadership was over Russia. Sure, they wanted war with Serbia, but they were waiting for German approval first. This can be supported with the fact that Austria-Hungary actually wanted to stop Serbian expansionism during the 1st Balkan War, but Germany said they weren't ready for a war yet in 1912, so Austria-Hungary didn't intervene and was still content with an Albanian buffer state. The Austro-Hungarians also wrongly assumed Germany would support them in their own offensive in August 1914 to encircle whole Poland (where the Austro-Hungarians briefly took Krasnik and Komarow), but Germany simply stayed at the defensive (only pushing the Russians out of East Prussia) and you know what then happened. In conclusion, the Austro-Hungarians knew they couldn't beat Russia alone, they always counted on German support, but that help only arrived after Russia already took Galicia in late 1914.

@steelforge2346 realistically, Germany will still provide other help, send resources and provide volunteers, and I can see both Britain and Germany forcing Russia and Austria to negotiate a white peace when it is clear that Russia as winning as no one wants Russian domination. I can see the polish, ruthenian, serbian and romanian territories being taken but the rest of Austria-Hungary surviving, I can see Italy being forced to stay out of the war too. The end result is a much smaller Austria-Hungary that is much more weaker and dependent on Germany....but to the misfortune of the Hungarians, the fact that there's now fewer minorities means that the Austrian portion of the nation can now be more dominant, allowing for more easier stabilisation. If This new Austria-Hungary collapses, I can see Germany annexing Austria and keeping bohemia and slovakia as a puppet If it stablises and survives, I can see it as a close German aligned ally and a buffer

Not a bad scenario but why make such a big mistake by claiming that Wilhelm II hated Britain? He didn't. His feelings towards the British might be mixed, after all, he saw himself as very close to Britishness, not nearly just out of his deep love for his grandmother Empress Victoria, but he spent much of childhood at the isles, and later visited it often. The naval exercises he witnessed in his childhood had a deep impression on him, and drove him to seek a navy of his own. Even in this, the naval build-up, he sought to be a greater ally to Britain on the sees, saying that "one day Britain will be glad to have such ally on the seas", sadly it was the British who saw it as a threat. It was the British, rather than him, who saw Britain as the enemy of Germany, mostly due to economical dependence and threat of being outpaced and outmatched in trade. Kaiser was frustrated at this, stating in the famous transcript "the British are mad, mad as march hares (...) to see Germany as their enemy!" he also said "I perhaps entirely alone in Germany see Britain as an ally". I suggest you do more research on Kaiser Wilhelm II rather than rely on cliches, tropes and misinformation propaganda.

little correction: the fact that Germany planned for a offensive through Belgium doesnt prove that they knew it would happen, its just that millitaries of evetry country plan for every possibility imaginable. For example im pretty sure the USA has a plan for a war with Canada, even though its highly unlikely to happen. A war with France was way more probable but still.

I will have to disagree with Italy or Bulgaria joining the war on the Russian/Serbian side as it completely disregards the international political dynamics at the time. Italy was part of the Triple Alliance, a defensive pact between itself, Austria, and Germany, and would not have so easily thrown away its friendship with them for the land they wanted. In our timeline, Italy only joined the Entente because of diplomatic pressure from Britain and France and they basically promised them everything they wanted in the peace deal, only to betray them later. Russia just does not have the political leverage necessary to pull Italy onto their side. If anything, I feel like Austria would promise South Tirol and parts of Istria for help against Serbia/Russia. Bulgaria would likely have offered to join Austria, not Russia, as they still desired North Macedonia and wanted their land back that Romania stole from them after having just recently lost the Second Balkan War.

Poor Austria-Hungary. I know they’re the butt of many jokes, but I like Austria-Hungary. P.S. For anyone interested: Lavader has an excellent series on Kaiser Wilhelm II. P.P.S. Russia maybe wasn’t as industrialized as the West, but it was more industrialized than people think and it was industrializing.

If Germany were to remain neutral, I think there'd have to be a negotiated agreement between Germany and Russia to let the conflict be a regional matter. There might even have been diplomatic pressure to let the all but 2 concessions of Serbia be enough to keep the peace.

This needs a part 2 I wanna see what happens next with Britain, Germany and America. I personally believe the Ottomans and Japan would potentially join this alliance as both of them saw Russia as their greatest threat potentially Italy too. Meanwhile Russia would continue its Alliance with France and the Balkan countries. And China either joins the Russian alliance as they hate Britain and Japan and aren’t particularly fond of America and would likely still want the German colony in their land back. Or they fall apart similarly to our own timeline with Russia, Britain, France, Germany and Japan possibly America too all carving China Up into their own spheres of influence. This needs a part 2 please make it 🙏

What many people don't know is that Wilhelm II. when he saw what Serbia was willing to concede to Austria-Hungary and that this would be a quite easy diplomatic victory without having to use actual force, the Germans rescinded the blanque cheque. But alas, the Austrians decided to go haywall and shell Belgrade whithout 1. informing Germany of the current situation and 2. without having a single army actually ready for a war with Russia (and boy did that show). The Austrian General who defected to Russia and leaked the plans for Austrian mobilization and other top secret documents probably didn't help their cause either.

Russia's real interest in war was to gain control of the Dardanelles in order to gain access to the Mediterranean. Since Austria-Hungary would have collapsed under the onslaught of Russia and its allies alone, the Ottoman Empire would more or less inevitably have been drawn into the war. This in turn would have brought England into the picture.

If Germany were to stay neutral in such a conflict it's under the pretext Bismarck advised. He planned to forge an alliance WITH Russia, so by the end of that "final Balkan war" russia would gain influence over that pan-slavic area while germany would gain influence over that pan-germanic area while being allied that would also come with territorial gains for both russia and Germany. That was Bismarcks wish, that was also the wish of Emperor Friedrich III sadly he ruled only 99 days.

That’s what should have happened as well with France. Neither power had any reason to go to war but chose to honor an alliance, Austria-Hungary, Serbia and Russia were trying to handle problems and war was the only solution the others were just there because they had pledged to help one of them.

i dont think the naval arms race and suspicion would be that much of a barrier in this timeline. One day before WWI, british foriegn ministers said that Germany and Britain were "On good terms" in our timeline, the naval arms race also signifigantly cooled down after 1912. since this balkan war would probably take about half a year or so, their relationship would only improve over that time

@ about 12:50: Map of Chechoslovakia. Once the multi-ethnic Austrian empire would have collapsed, it could well have been, the the German parts of CZ Republik would have been claimed independence/ allignment with the German Empire, as it was forced later in 1938. (The CZ Republic was a multi ethnic state, too: czechs, slovacians (both 8.8mn together), germans (3.1mn), hungarians (0.7mn), ukrainians (0.5), jews (0.2mn; that is what statistics distinguished), others (0.2mn). With the back-up of an un-exhausted German Empire against the other war opponents that could well have happened.
@DeanMonsieur
@DeanMonsieur 15 часов назад
This is a good point, although perhaps the Russians wouldn't necessarily allow this in the postwar treaties.
@peteraffm
@peteraffm 15 часов назад
Well, one side would not allow and the other would have insisted. Germany could have "sent support" (occupying the respective areas), befor the CZ Republik was established. That would have been a swift action. As a consequence, Russia +some assisting countries would have had to start a new war against a prepared, unexhausted German Empire. This isn't promissing either - as long as France could be held at bay!
