What If Grizzly Bears Were Introduced Into The Amazonian Rainforest? 

I think they could *survive* in the Amazon but I don't think they would be very comfortable in that heat. This might be the reason why these bears never wandered that far South in the first place.

The grizzly bear would not be top dog in the Amazonian rainforest at first, but give it about half an hour and it would the undisputed king of the jungle.

This environment would create a different kind of Grizzly Bear. Shorter fur, stronger nose, better eyesight, leaner body and muscle tone, and more aquatic in nature. It would probably become more aborial as well; especially younger bears evading predators. I don't think that there would be an embalance at all. In fact, a grizzley bear would be a rich addition to such an environment. Especially to other predators and how they would adapt to the bears presence. It would be very interesting to see the adaptations from both angles for sure. 👍

Don't forget Usain Bolt set those records after years of training, running on tracks specifically designed for sprints, with special purpose shoes. He'd hard pressed to approach half that speed in the Tundra with ruts, shrubs, rocks.

I would imagine natural selection would push them to adapt for thinner builds and lighter coats over time.

Grizzly bears would move from the amazon to the andes highlands forest and coexist with spectacled bears, pumas, llamas, guanacos, alpacas, etc. there.

Most smarter top predators like Chimps/Humans, Dolphins/Orcas, and Bears other then the polar bear could basically survive anywhere as long as it has enough prey and plants. Those three general species types basically won the genetic lottery.

The only thing that could legit threaten a grizzly bear in the Amazon is an adult black caiman or maybe some small venomous critters.

I've seen alot of comments saying jaguars would crush a bears skull in an ambush. A grizzlies skull is ~2 ft long and over a 1ft across with 5-7 inches of muscle covering its cranium. It's like a tom cat jumping on a German Shepard

I think even if a Tiger got the drop on one from behind idk if it would be able to dig through all that fur. Once Grizzlie turns to fight that Tigers going for a ride and being put on its back fast.

I think the main problem grizzlies would face in the Amazon rainforest is keeping their cubs alive, given the many potential predators. If a mountain lion can take down a cub, then almost anything on the Amazon predator list could as well. Additionally, there are far more predators, as well as poisonous animals and critters.

I don't think they would make it for some reasons. 1. They would 100% struggle in the heat of the forest, imagine having a thick fur in a hot af place all year. 2. Its a very dense forest and preys are used to run from predators such as jaguars in the woods and into the rivers, I don't think bears would adapt to regularly catching agile sneaky animals in a dense forest. 3. There are tons of different tropical mosquitoes, parasites and diseases they would face.

You give the grizzly bear an hour and a half, they'll be the undisputed king of the Amazon. The only animals that the bear would have to contend with is the black caiman and the Orinoco crocodile 🐊. Jaguars wouldn't have much of a problem against the smaller caiman, but the bigger ones would stand up to a jaguar and bear. Plus, cougars have encountered grizzly, but not even they can take them down unless they're injured. The only way a jaguar could take a grizzly bear out is for the grizzly bear to be severely injured. Other than that, those two crocodiles are capable of keeping a grizzly bear at bay.

The heat and humidity will take the grizzlies out in Amazon. I think they can make it in the CA mountains/maybe the Mexican Sierra Madre but the Amazon? Impossible. Too hot, too dense, and too humid.

Grizzly bears would be staying up during even the winter if they were to appear in the Amazon and would eat everything made of plants and meat. Now what about more animal battles like Grizzly Bear VS Anaconda, Hippopotamus, or even Komodo Dragon?

Although I think that the Amazon climate would be a bit too warm for a grizzly bear to be comfortable in, l think they would immediately become the apex predator of that territory with very little serious competition.

The grizzly I seen in the yukon sunbathing on the road was big enough to whip a car with one paw no problem, you don't realize how big they are until your 50 feet away. The amazon would bend the knee to the grizzly.

Bears hibernate an adaptation to cold climates and food scarcity. I don't think those adaptations work well in a tropical climate and all that weight generates a lot of heat.

There are bears in the Amazon rainforest. These bears are the species called the Andean bear and they are mostly limited to the western portion of the Amazon region which is close to the Andes mountains. The Andean bear is the only bear which is found in South America. A grizzly is not physically adapted to living in a rainforest. It may survive for a while, but it would not prosper. The rainforest would likely be too warm for their body type.

The grizley would just migrate out of the Jungle towards the river mouth on the coast. Then eventually would migrate north towards colder climate. It wouldn't stick around the jungle very long.

Mosquitoes are unbearable, the bullet ants are unmerciful, twenty-foot anacondas prowl around, jaguars, piranhas, tropical diseases, high temperature, black caiman, poisonous snakes, the wondering spiders are the deadliest in the world, it wouldn't work out for the grizzlies.

A Grizzly will kill a jaguar, and a lion. That hump on there back makes a Grizzly extremely powerful. Grizzlies have a bad temper. People saying they wouldn't stand a chance, don't know anything about Grizzlies or brown bears.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't survive there, finding the large amounts of food they need in the Amazon is very unlikely. Catching salmon is easy, fish in the Amazon are not, unless they eat piranhas, but they're not very good for the diet anyway. The plant life is also completely different, there are a lot of animals that survive by foraging in the Amazon, which means the plants have developed more complicated methods of defense. I would say the percentage of edible plants in the Amazon is much lower and they're probably much harder to find. Then comes the prey, apart from deer, the prey that bears eat is not very used to being hunted, so they don't need to develop crazy senses. This is completely different in the Amazon, most of the large animals in the Amazon have crazy sense, and they're probably all better swimmers and divers than bears. It's no wonder that jaguars and leopards are the only large land predators in the Amazon. They are smaller, very intelligent, excellent swimmers and much more stealthy than bears (there are videos showing a group of people 1.5 meters away from a jaguar and still not sure if it was an animal, until the animal jumped towards one of them and then ran away). The Amazon in the past also had giant sloths that also fed on animals and plants and had to change completely, reducing their size to absurd levels. The same would be necessary for bears. And reducing size, if they specialize in foraging they are worse than monkeys, and if they go to dry land they are worse than wild boars that are great at finding roots.

There isn’t much food for a grizzly in the Amazon that it could actually catch. Vegetation is much denser and most mammals or birds are small and live in the tree canopies. No caribou, deer, or berry trees to eat. Rivers are far bigger, slower, and deeper, so while there are aquatic mammals bears could eat, they are far better swimmers than bears, so hunting or fishing by the banks or in the rapids of rivers is not really an option. Furthermore insect pests are everywhere in overwhelming numbers and feast on animals that haven’t adapted to them. There is a reason bears native to Latin America (Spectacled Bears) are small and live on the periphery of the rainforest, not within it. A Grizzly would be the apex predator, yes, but would die pretty quickly from hunger and disease.

It'd come down to whether enough were introduced given how long it would take them to evolve for the heat; shorter fur, not hibernating, etc. Similar to the other most successful evolutionary apex predators like crocodilians, big cats, some whales, etc. they probably would manage; species of bears have thrived in almost every climate on earth. As long as there's enough food, there's almost nothing that can stop the most elite apex species.

Well, mother nature didn't put them there. Probably for good reason. I would keep them where they are. Coastal Grizzlies are the largest. They are even more specific to regions.

It could survive the Amazon easily. Plenty of food to eat. Even the huge anaconda would be ripped to ribbons w the Grizzly claws and bite.

A grizzly bear would be absolutely screwed in the amazon. They rome around to careless and would get obliterated by the thousands of venomous snakes, insects and spiders along with the poisonous plants. If thats not bad enough its cubs would routinely fall victim to caiman, jaguars and anaconda

Grizzly bear adults can NOT climb trees. The cubs can, but once they get to a certain size, climbing trees is no longer an option. Black bear adults and cubs can climb trees...not brown bears.

Grizzly will probably definitely change up the scenery for all the prey on land... I don't see anything defeating a grizzly... They eat greens and meat so that would be paradise for them, they are probably able to catch everything they encounter...

I mean, the bear is so fat, and furry, I think they won’t be very comfortable in so much heat. I’ve seen dogs with thick fur having a hard time in summers, while they’re so much more energetic in winters, so I believe that it might suffer some problems with the climate, I mean because it’s not a desert, there’s plenty of shade and water, in the jungle, so it might not suffer from heatstroke, and survive, but it’s not going to be a pleasant experience for it.

I would think after a few thousand or maybe hundred years it would adapt to the environment they would most likely adopt a more slender build maybe something like a larger sun bear in size just for the easier movement but a grizzly bear is just to large for that type of environment but if you don’t consider that then there is not really any predator taking on a healthy adult grizzly there just to big and powerful a jaguar would see it as a unnecessary risk unless it’s a sick or old/young bear and out side the largest Cayman they really wouldn’t try it be like Nile crocs and hippos interactions

i think the only really struggles a bear would have is figuring out what is ok to eat. Theres alot of poisonous frogs and plants they could potentially kill the bear if it eats them. Then theres all the venomous snakes and spiders. The bear might be ok verse the spiders as it has a pretty thick and baggy hide but i think snakes could be a problem. I'd be interested to see a large alligator vs grizzly bear encounter. Feel like the bear would win but if the alligator gets a good bite it might be able to drown the bear.

The jaguar will jump from a tree and sink its fangs into the grizzly's skull. That's the technique he uses to kill tapirs. So not a good starting point for the grizzly.
