If a Wooster or some other light cruiser comes broadside infront of me in my GK, I just aim with HE into his citadel area and score citadels + fires. AP is only going to overpen anyways ;-)
I found the sad truth a while ago too. If you are not a yammy and have more than 6 guns, just shot HE and it will probably work. Because all the HE spam from other ships and the ping from sub, a lot of the time the DCP is on cool down, and this makes HE spam more effective.
"Dont force anything too early".. Well... depends on. Ive seen Flanks where whole lemming train's are backing up against 2 enemy ships.. On the other hand, there are Flanks that freakin Yolo rush in against an overwhelming enemy flank, relieing too much on seccondarys. I always check the enemy lineup first, other than to sit back or push in. If you know your enemy flank, you can take best advantage of the situation. Because there's a difference between "play save"...or "too save",as "pushing in"or "suicide"imoo. Always depends on, because most important thing is..:How can I get the most out of it by supporting the TEAM, keeping DDs alive, take out enemy CVS as quick as possible ..stuff like that
vermont HE should work if your doing 20s HE salvo's front guns and then wit for back gun, every 20s you have 6 guns firing at like 43% fire chance. it be up to you, if you want to try this. reducing reload timer to 35s from 40 might help since it already has like 24km gun range and spotter plane.... that could mean 17.5 to 18s salvo's
I've been using HE/AP at about 40/60 for some time now, 406's with acc mod slot 3 and range mod in slot 6. Expert Loader and Furious on captain. It's really nasty, and it's kinda fun turning the tables on HE spammers in my constantly fire-spammed GK, I must say.
I use GK with the legendary mod and all main battery reload mods and its basically turned that boat into a giant heavy cruiser, 17 sec reloads if im not mistaken. Best game so far is 283k damage using primarily HE.
I think irl during that era they did constantly switch ammo types depending on scenario. So yes spamming he until broadside is accurate regardless of ship type
Salu PQ, I love your videos, you have great analysis. Sometimes you make us see the near future of the game.Just a few years ago, playing HE on BB was heresy: BB is played with APs, nothing else! But let's look at your part. 31 AP at goal, that's 1602 dmg/ shell. 31 Ap+68 HE = 99 shells x 1602 = 158 645 dmg if all ap hit, without overpenn and others. This is higher than the 129,769dmg made with the shells in your game. let's add the fires. of the 9 fires, only 1 was caused by secondaries (the 8th). The other 8 were caused by HE shells. 98386/9=10,943 dmg. Let's add these 10k. In short, a 169k game if it's a AP GK. In the AP, maybe you wouldn't have played it the same way. In the meantime, between 169k and 252k dmg, there's quite a difference. You've just opened the eyes of a good number of players who are watching you. In this day and age, a BB can be played HE without being ridiculous and still make a good game.
Thank you for doing the math, thats eye opening for me👍. PQ is also the ONLY other WoW RU-vidr that actually shares his captain and ship builds in each video (Sailing robin is the other).👍
When accuracy is bugged, fires become OP. Lately ppl are able to make gamer turns in front of enemy BBs without getting deleted, is it the players or is it gunnery bugs?
I remember when the Conqueror came out, people started using HE on other BB lines to see if fire spamming was possible. The results were not good enough for players to drop AP, but that might've been peer pressure in the matches since firing HE from a BB was traditionally a "noob" move.
Once i got Arsonist from Minnesota because a Hannover was just straight up nose in into me and AP was mostly doing 0 damage. Even found the HE spamming technique to be very useful when a nose in Battle against a Yammie in my Kremlin is going on
I know it's really different but I'm a wowsl player and honestly I've been doing this on my bbs for a while. In my head it just makes sense to use the more consistent damage. Of course, using AP when I have a nice broadside but I feel the fire chance is a lot easier to rely on than cit chance
I saw some of your live stream on this and whilst I know it was a 'joke', i was kinda wondering what a bfk, a flamu or yourself (amongst many others) would say if they were on the other side of that, or were even watching a teammate do it. Your disclaimer sort of answers my question.
I sheepishly tried this in Yamato... i got similar results. People were screaming at me to us AP, but Yammy HE is surprisingly good. You may not vaporize broad aides like you do with AP, but any BB bow in, it burns them right up. Got witherer in 3x battles doing this... so yea, PQ doing this in GK just proves even further how silly this works.
considering that 90% of the time that a cruiser sails full broadside and all they eat is 6 overpens. yeah HE is unfortunately the way to go. i know it would require massive rebalancing but some kind of citadel overpen damage needs to come into the game. somehow the best armor in this game is less armor.
my recent Repu experience: shoot ap on angled targets , citadels guarranted, on broadside targets overpens and shatters( even mino, neptune) the aiming bugs are there . that also works for me as well, if i angle , full pens 20k salvos on me, even from tirpitz but when broadside juking tanks alot and far better. what is this game idk at this point
Have always swapped between HE and AP. Since 2016 when I started playing. The newbs are the ones who stay with HE no matter what. It does work best with shorter reloads.
I missed out on the GK when it was in the Tech Tree. For how many people say to not get it for coal, I sure do see a lot of people do fun things with GK's, and its very tempting to get it for my first coal ship haha.
I think it you have 12 guns, etting fires with HE is never a problem. And yeah, HE is consistent. I'd like to see how an Ohio does better with most of its damage done with HE. Ohio has fewer guns, and HE does not overmatch cruisers the way Ohio's AP does.
Well, I do use HE on my Preussen and GK, albeit I run IFHE on them so the secondaries pen the 38mm deck of ships from the american lines as well as the ability to basically citadel any cruiser with exposed citadels, so yeah it's not a bad move for the GERMAN BBs but uh, not sure about that on other ships
Honestly I've started doing the same. With every 2018+ ship line having nonexistant citadels...HE seems to be the way. Congrats WG, you played yourself. Unless you have overmatch, AP has questionable usage with most ship's accuracy. The best part is that halfway into the engagement, people think you're a 40%er and end up showing full broadside letting you to smack em. That said, I am terrible in BBs.
Yeah probably in randoms HE spam could work, but loading AP or having expert loader upgraded by a special commander is very useful, why? Because enemy ships HAVE to bow in into a Battleship to avoid being citadeled, that opportunity cost of a sort of "map control" is often not considered but very important. If not, enemy ships could sail broadside without being punished.
I never do it, but at times it feels like if I don't have the opportunity for a broadside dev strike, it's better to just shoot HE. Do damage and start fires.
Watched this video. Played GK spamming HE. Found another GK spamming HE. Realized we both watched the same video. Proceeded to farm each other the entire game 😂
As hurtful as it would be to my soul.. perhaps an HE Vermont could work if you split your salvos.. I know, I know, that'd make it a 6 gun BB, but that's a Georgia Salvo every 20 seconds right?
first? lets see whats in store totally agree with using HE a bit more. i myself usually use HE for 1st loaded salvo, in case i get a lucky 1st strike fire or breaking torpedo tubes / AA guns / secondary guns. then switch as needed as for the longer reload time on ships like the vermount, i wonder if delaying each shot wouldn't help. give a 3 to 5 second delay between each, see if they DCP any fires right away and, if they do, save the rest of your salvo for after it's timed out. would also like to see an Azuma return, if we're talking HE spamming. if you have the AL version, even better. gorgeous ship design on the AL version
Wait… gk was literally an HE spammer the entire time. Honestly the idea of slinging HE from range before pushing in with secondaries makes a ton of sense given the ships god awful accuracy for ap and tumorous superstructure.
BB HE was the OG way to play back whent the game first came out. i uset HE for the most part. but i was new and a aim noob. so som years later i learn how to play with AP. but after the game have becom long shot sniping. HE might be comming back to stay.
I do think HE needs to be used more by BBs, many just go lazy mode and keep AP in. But... in a secondary ship situation where you are taking IFHE, then of course HE would be a rare to nonexistent choice unless you are shooting at a DD, and BB players please shoot at DDs.
You have your game chat turned off ? Lol bet your getting a lot of hate chat about why your in the back of the maps spamming HE in a GK, LOL ! Love it..I use a lot of HE in my GK and quite good with a hybrid build. HE is the way in this 2024 long range HE spamming meta.
I hate that he is so good. Yes large caliber he should do damage to the superstructure and probably destroy a lot of secondaries and aa but I hate that small caliber he can light so many devastating fires on heavy. Cruiser and especially bbs. And also small dds that have smaller than 6 inch shells can have a very high dps or dpm for such a small ship against such a big ship and lastly dds should really not be effective against heavier ships with its guns because they have no chance of sinking an enemy with them or even dealing much damage. Most it would do it manage a lucky hit in an important part of the superstructure but most important parts are either in the citadel or other armoured parts that should take no damage from even heavy cruiser and maybe bb he. I think it is unbalanced and not fun and unhistorical(yes not important for most players but it is still something if it is bad for the game as well)
After years of creating new mechanics, reworks, adding gazillion of ships and modes, all the money and time investments later - most viable tutorial to the game: HE spam lol xD
8yrs playing and you havent used HE on angled ships.. no way dude!! Always HE on angled ships as its not worth risking ricochets or shatters.. its just planning ahead depending on your reload time.. i always have the changing ammo nature buff on the captains for this reason
